Galaxy tab update question - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Verizon tab. When i left verizon i cancelled the data service on it and just either tether to my phone or use wifi at home. I guess the update for gingerbread will probably be OTA for these devices. Since i have no real connection to the verizon network how am i able to do this? Sorry for the noob question.

If you had searched or read any other topics before creating this one you would already know that Gingerbread is not available anywhere yet except Italy.
Also you can just download Samsung Kies, You have no need to update OTA. IMO it would be much better to update your device with a custom rom rather then stock and you can do that now instead of waiting.
BTW, Please ask "Questions" in the "Questions" forum, that why its called "Q&A" and has a subtitle of "For all of your questions..."

You know.. in all the forums I've been to - I've seen so many wasting their time with 'if you had just searched' and you guess what - it won't change anything. Who cares if this person wants to start a discussion about an update...
To answer the OP's question - You need not receive the update via OTA. If/When one emerges, you'll be able to find it online.
I've got a Sprint Tab and I to use it as a WiFi only device. However, I was able to receive two OTA updates when I first got it. (It was out of date when I bought it).
So it's more than likely that you'll still be able to receive them. If not, again, don't worry - you'll be able to find an update.zip file for it when and if one becomes available.

I knew the update was only available in italy at the moment. I searched for my question that was toward the updates with no 3g connection that i could not find. I cant use kies with my device so i guess ill see what happens in the next few months. thanks

New Market

T-mobile has released an update that includes carrier billing in the market. Can we get the new market in cyanogen or other donut roms?
according to http://androidandme.com/2009/12/car...payment-options-for-android-market-purchases/
"serjical 12/10/09 at 3:35 pm Rank 0 I already have the update and I have rooted phone running cyanogen mod 4.2.7.1 so yes it works on rooted phones too and if you would like screen shoots drop me a line at my email and I will send them to you"
perhaps us root users will get the update automatically (fingers crossed)

im wondering if someone who has it can post it and perhaps we can try pushing it into various roms
Can anybody that gets it let us know if you're forced to use the carrier billing, or if you can just keep it set to Google Checkout? Personally, I love the fact that it comes out of my checking account immediately and that I can see the transaction online. I'm also concerned how this will impact the 24 hour refunds.

According to Tmo and reports from users who have it, yes, Google Checkout remains an option. You can use whatever one you want. And the 24-hour refund policy is still in place.
That said... this thread has nothing to do with development, or the Dream hardware (specifically). It needs to be moved to the Android apps forum.
Can we pull the new market off a device that has the update it and push it to our devices. If so, does anyone have the new market?

as stated prior .. this should be a dead thread .. it is not specific to the dream dev .. from everything i have seen and read concerning any and all changes to Market it is device specific and controlled by your firmware version .. therefore those using v1.6 may not be able to use the new Market .. it is not simply a matter of loading a new file on your phone
that said .. anyone can feel free to correct my statement .. but please refrain from adding new threads for such things and direct these kinds of statements and/or questions to the appropriate (already existing) thread
have any of you even checked to see if you have it? i have it....check manage applications to make sure its a version greater than 1660...

How about this.....

I know. It's annoying, having something get off subject because a bunch of people post off-topic, isn't it? Which is why threads started in the wrong section (especially DEVELOPMENT, where real work goes on) get flamed. So, uh, "klowns" need to post where they should. If you don't, don't complain when people post off-topic in your off-topic thread.
Edit: This thread isn't another stupid "Tried this moto klick app now my fone says t-mobiel g1 help! plz" one, it genuinely has something to offer, and it was a simple misunderstanding posting it here, instead of in apps. Which is why a few members here mentioned that it was in the wrong section, but nobody was rude towards the OP for it, and why the thread should probably just be moved, instead of locked. We can all still be nice. Yes?

On Friday, I received a silent upgrade from 1.620 to 1.660; I still do not have the option to bill to my carrier, and yes, I am a US TMO subscriber.
At any rate, here is the 1.660 Vending.apk from my phone (in sig). Remember to rename it to .apk from .zip.

Want to root finally

I've had my G1 since Christmas of 08 and I finally decided to root. I jailbroke my ipod touch, and I heard rooting is similar to that, so i'm up for the task. I have firmware 1.6 and build number DMD64.
What exactly do I need to do, and what is the best rom to date that is good to use?

Did you search or anything?
You won't get anyone here that's going to hold your hand or do it for you because in the twenty or so minutes that you waiting for the answer to be handed to you you could have found it for yourself by reading the above link and/or searching. So you are in actually just wasting your time posting your question. By the way since you are obviously new to XDA here's a fair warning. There are three types of people on here... those that help, those that are idle (just read but don't post) and those that need everything done for them. What kind do you think your first impression made and what kind of people do you think get flammed by the Senior Members that spend hours every week helping people like yourself by answering the same questions over and over again even after it's already been answered. And you're probably thinking "Instead of writing out this whole damn thing, why didn't he just tell me the answer?" Well because if you don't learn this way you're only going to rely on us from here on out if you are spoon fed. Again, I'm not trying to be a d!ck but if you want to make it here on XDA you have to play by the rules. Happy rooting!

A rooted phone is timeless, you can have any version of Android, whenever you want it. Therefore, it makes sense that an old thread is just as good as a new thread that has the same exact information other than the rom you flash.
Ok, I finished rooting my G1 and got to the HTC v.1.5.2 screen, now i'm going to install a rom
Thanks to all of the guides and youtube videos, I now have Manup456 Eclair 2.1 V1.5 on my G1! Just going back to put back in my ringtones and files. It's like I have a brand new phone!

"Seen" well then you were only looking for about 2 seconds then. Google it.
wow, seriously? noone can get any help any more. everyone is just such a **** these days.
anyways, you need a data plan to root ur phone. you personally don't need it, but get a friend that has a data plan and use his SIM card for the procedure. and i'm sure there are some apps that force all data to be stopped and only allow wifi. i know my hero rom has an option to disable all data except for wifi built right in. i used hero_over. but i'm sure all hero roms have that option.

Your method is probably the most "common-sense" idea. We're not being dicks, we're just sick and tired of people not searching before posting, there's about millions of pages on google on the topic but they insist on coming here anyways. He can register through wifi with adb which most people do, so this pretty much contradicts the word "need" in your first statement. I won't carry on because I don't need to because I'd be a "****".

in anycase you're wrong, I haven't seen a question asking if you can root a phone without a data plan and a data block put on your phone.. keyword: DATA BLOCK... yes I am not an idiot.. I do search, why do alot of you seniors post on Q&A with "search please" ... just to get your post count up? Seems pretty regressive on helping people in a questions section.
Thanks to the other poster XD, but isn't there an option to get around it by entering in wifi to supplement the loss of a data plan and the addition of a data block?

But when you really think about it, what's the point of having a Dream if you don't have a data plan? The majority of what the phone does involves intensive data plan usage, and I don't know about anybody else, but I actually use my device other than sitting at my computer.
Just my two cents.

[Q] how to stop/disable ota firmware update notification

Well if its asking you to update to 2.3.3, then lots of people here are waiting for the files so they can manually update, as Google haven't put them on their developers site to anyones knowledge. Plus people can then get cooking with the files you provide.
So be a dear, upload the files. Please!

You've got to give him some credit... I've never seen some one pretend to get an OTA, that everyone wants, in such a clever way. Normally it's more like this, "YAYY!!!!! I gotz dA OTAs!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111one!!!!11ONE!!!" and then you never hear from them again. If he didn't have over 700 posts I'd almost believe him.
I can give some credit for that
It is better than the guy who posts on twitter, and once revealed that he was making it up, is threatened by many.

sooo a guy with over 700 posts here doesn't realize that this isn't the g2 forum, somehow gets a g2 update, when I'm almost positive there are none being released currently (or ever for the g2) on the day that the n1 happens to have announced that is coming out and people are foaming at the mouths to get it?
and I'm supposed to feel bad for him reanimating a year old thread from the dead, with a vague non working solution to a problem he prior didn't have?
I'll stick with my thoughts on the matter, thanks though.

Were is Gingerbread ?

Now i no this may have been covered in other posts But !
I no there versions of 2.3.3 kicking around but i look after a company's 15 mobile phones and they only update via kies.
I no in the UK the roll out has been pulled, and service centres have been told not to put the firmware on, i also no that Android (Google) Told Samsung to stop the update this was weeks ago all my contacts have been told to say nothing
All the new stuff coming out eg Google talk the company i'm looking after they want but i'm not putting firmware on that is not meant for the phone.
The phone is very capable to run 2.3.4 as the phone is the same spec as the Nexus S, They have already asked if they should of got this phone.
I to have had doubts as to weather i should of got this phone, and gone for a Nexus S
Any one no what is going on with Samsung and android will XEU customers get any form of Gingerbread?????
If you "no" that the subject has been covered in lots of other threads, why the need to post this?
The info is on here time and time again. "no" one "no's" any more than you can see.
lol
And yes, I am sure obliquely threatening that Samsung will use 15 customers on a website that is not owned, operated or likely even closely watched by Samsung, will spur Samsung to drop their stalling and release Gingerbread before the version is ready.
I also think that that readers without English as their first language might have difficulty in reading the OP. lol.

To go to WIFI direct go to Settings, Tap on WIFI - not on on/off button. And on buttom right you will have it. You will need device with same thing, and WIFI router or switch I think. Never tried it.
Edit: Seems that I was wrong about need of an host (router, switch),
Look.
Wi-Fi Direct, previously known as Wi-Fi P2P, is a standard that allows Wi-Fi devices to connect to each other without the need for a wireless access point.[2] This allows Wi-Fi Direct devices to directly transfer data between each other with greatly reduced setup
