I've read flashing to odin (2.1) can cause problems if your phone came with stock 2.2.
I am wondering what all I need to know to (as safely as possible) flash a phone that comes with stock 2.2 or if there is any increased danger in flashing with the stock 2.2 phones.
I've done a few quick checks.. haven't come up with a lot of data to say "yay or nay" on the subject as to any of the major differences if there are any.
I had a replacement Captivate come stock with 2.2 and have had no problems. If you flash custom ROMS from 2.2 though you need to read about 3e recovery with no signatures. But if you ODIN back to 2.1 you shouldn't have a problem.
If you are new to all this my advice is to READ AS MUCH AS YOU CAN before you do anything to so you can keep from harming your phone.

I'm not incredibly new to rooting/flashing.
I am however, experienced enough to double check and make sure of things before I jump in head first.
I am running CM7 on my own phone and just want to make sure nothing goes horribly wrong when flashing my girlfriends.
I had heard about losing 3 button combo and that was one of my major concerns.. I'll check out 3e recovery before I jump in.

Good evening,
I usually use Windows Mobile devices so very new to Android, but my girlfriend has recently purchased a Galaxy S from Three. I have tried looking in the FAQ's but there is that much information I am feeling a little confused and dont want to go bricking a £380 phone.
Anyway, the phone has Three's customisation on it and it's not good to put it simply and I am wanting to return the phone to stock ROM or possibly a custom ROM.
The phone is currently running Android 2.2 as it updated when we first got it using the Samsung Klies.
Please can some of you offer advise on where to start with this as I presume I will need a backup of the ROM currently installed.
I've tested the 3 button download mode and that works fine.

Well with the 3br you can pretty much do anything I would probably flash different kernel which has 2e recovery either speedmod or cf root then install rom manager and from within that app install cwm this enables you to flash custom roms preferably jpy 2.2.1 or just use odin to flash roms that are available from samfirmware again id recommend jpy.
It is worth reading everything you can before you start rather than posting in panic if it goes wrong. You can also break the three button as many have discovered lately to their loss. It is always a risk. So make sure you know wha your doing before you start and remember her warranty will probably be voided by doing any flash.
So just got back my phone from samsung. I hard bricked it after messing with GB bootloaders. My bad. Anyway, they said to fix it they had to replace the PBA? Anyone help me on what this is? Also, how do i know if this still has GB boots on it? I'm thinking they completely cleared this thing out. It's running 2.2, with 3e recovery. Pretty sure everything GB is gone from this phone, just trying to be sure. I plan on keeping it simple with this phone and rooting and flashing a 2.2 rom w/o bootloaders, so I know that won't be a prob, I just want to make sure that if I do mess with boots, I'll know what's currently running so I won't brick again. Btw, don't really want to mess with oneclick, cuz it's a 1010 build and I know that is causing some issues with oneclick.
Does it say galaxy s when you boot?

Yeah, it does all the original annoying galaxy s swooshing crap. Like I said I'm pretty sure this thing is stock 2.2 froyo, just need that assurance that i won't have bootloader issues. Kinda timid after the first brick. At least Samsung fixed it under warranty.
If it has the GB bootloaders the key combos are different. Power off, hold volume down and power, if you get download mode it's GB bootloaders.

PBA = Printed Board Assembly. It's the main circuit board in the phone.
The GB bootloaders are almost certainly gone. You should be able to tell by booting into recovery.
So I hate my Samsung Galaxy S i9000 but only because it doesn't work. IF it was working I would love it a lot. The phone is rooted and I am running Vodafone's standard version of Froyo if such a thing even exists (no custom rom).
Now I have read about Odin and different firmwares but I am still VERY lost. I don't even know if any custom firmware would do me any good.
So here are my problems:
My Galaxy S is laggy as hell even tough I have installed lag fix.
GPS doesn't work AT ALL. I have installed pretty much every silly GPS app I could find on forums and in the market. I also entered a bunch of silly numbers yet the GPS is wrong by like 500 metres. Sometimes it gets VERY accurate if I run GPS Aids but google map instantly "fixes" it in just 1 second and screws up badly again >:C
If I take pictures with the front camera they will get displayed once I reboot the phone
and so on. it's completly buggered and I don't know why.

So will a custom rom fix this kind of stuff? will i get working gps with a custom rom or are those gps apps supposed to fix my GPS which they don't at all?
Do custom roms force a loader on me? I like TouchWiz.
Can I still use Gmail and other google apps with a custom rom?
Seriously I am pretty confused and don't know what to do since September 2010 but I never brought up the curage to ask / thought I might figure it out by studying forums but I am still terribly lost.
If your phone is playing up that much I'd think a custom or different stock rom would be the your best bet. I remember when I got my phone it was horrible in terms of stability and lag etc etc, since I've started flashing different roms I haven't looked back, of course you lose your warranty though. I think most of your problems are probably software related, though they could be hardware(gps /camera). To pick a rom your either looking at Froyo or Gingerbread, then do you want a stock(many newer stock Samsung roms are fairly good in stability and performance) or custom(modified stock roms), then you can go picking from there. Read up lots before you flash on what things are(Kernels, modems, clockworkmod, download mode, odin etc) and then if you are confident go for it. Don't hesitate to ask anything
Reading and learning are the key, as stated, my recommendation is to explore the ezbase roms and easy Odin as a great and easy start to rom flashing, and dont be afraid to ask,

If I set my phone back to factory reset will it jump back to 2.1 - the OS the phone came with or will it STAY at 2.2?
to be honest I personally believe the rom won't get touched if you do a factory reset so I will be stuck at 2.2. i have called samsung and they said it would jump back to 2.1. now i don't believe a single word samsung says.
IF I can always go back to 2.1 I could try Samsung's 2.3 - see if that does me any good and if that doesn't work I will jump back to 2.1 and root it again and use a custom ROM. I have already rooted it and used a one click solution which exists for 2.1 and 2.2 (i forgot the name of it but it was some orange icon with some arrow in it).

2.2 or whatever the current rom is .
suggest one update to Froyo 2.2.1 its the best . 2.1 is very laggy
no custom rom can fix a broken gps if it is broken
remove lagfix before flashing any rom .
Possible best fix would be to wipe phone via factory reset losing all data
Via Odin install Froyo 2.2.1 with pit 512 and repartition checked .
GPS hardware thread fix may help .

so
1) the samsung dude told sh*t when he said it would jump to the firmware the phone came with (just as i had assumed)
2) froyo 2.2.1 is more stable and better than any build of gingerbread? i thought gingerbread was a great battery saver and overall really nice
3) so with the gps problems i have stated it sounds more like broken hardware instead of software? i could still give the phone back but from everything i have read on the net GPS is just buggered on the galaxy s.
like i have said with GPS aids it will work fine (gps aids will give me a PERFECT location) but once I jump to google maps - google maps will automatically "correct" the positing which will be way off.
4) sorry for that stupid question but i don't really understand "Via Odin install Froyo 2.2.1 with pit 512 and repartition checked". What exactly is "pit 512" and what does "repartition checked" mean?

Go to ezbase thread and there you will get instructions with screenshots of how to use it, and all the stuff you need to download, and you can then flash either a slim rooted 2.2.1 or 2.3.3.

Ok I got a quick question and the searching I've done really hasn't turned up anything definitive. I've got andromeda 3 right now and a back up from rom manager from when my cappy was stock running 2.2 and just rooted running either possibly onix or speed mod kernel that I made before I went with andromeda and, I also have a stock kernel backup from sgs kernel flasher.... I know I was very paranoid before my first rom flash. My question is if I wanted to go back to stock at some point should I just use clockwork to restore the nandroid I made with rom manager and flash the kernel after with sgs kernel flasher or should I do an odin 1 click to get to stock 2.1 then use mini kies to go back to 2.2. I guess it wasnt too short, really I just wanna know is one way 'safer' than the other to go back to stock if I decided too.

There is a cwm flashable stock image in dev somewhere, I don't have it bookmarked sorry. I always use ODIN to go stock. Doing a nandroid backup wasn't backing up all the files like it should back in the day. Not sure if it is now, but I never relied on it. I haven't used kies in months, no need to do a stock update. But, really, the only reason you would want stock is if you're selling it, warranting it, or something where you need stock on it. AdamOutler is working on heimdal. I think there is stock version of it. But as far as bootloaders go, you're on 2.2, now. ODIN brick is ok. I've had a few. Jig will solve it.

I guess, to answer your question, ODIN is fine going from any 2.2 rom to stock 2.1. The trouble is going from 2.3 to 2.2 or 2.1. Then the bootloaders change. If something messes up in the process, you're screwed.
Ok thanks that's what I've been trying to figure out, and yeah I have no reason to wanna go stock but its just for future reference, wanted to sell *gasp* or need to have it repaired. Who knows maybe i'll throw my back up at it at some point just to see what happens and see if it really was a full back up and I'll search for what you mentioned. Kies has worked the one time I used it so maybe I'll try that for fun and see if it goes alright again. Really I'm just looking for the fastest way to go back which if it goes alright should be my rom manager back up. Thanks for mentioning the deal with 2.3 roms from the forum threads I've read it seemed kinda risky to make the jump so I've stuck with 2.2 roms so far.

Alright, I have been reading the forums, wikis, Q&As and stickies for a few days and I am getting ready to start playing with my cappy. I have a few unresolved questions which, for a non-noob will take a snap.
I am currently running 2.2 i897uckb1 on the Samsung-SGH-I897. It is rooted and unlocked. I purchased the phone in this state. The only major modification that I have made is the One Click Lag Fix (which worked awesomely). Here are my noobish questions:
1) I am running 2.2 and so I must have the bootloaders for 2.2 installed, is this correct?
2) The only reason to ever change the bootloaders, or flash with a rom that includes bootloaders, is to go from a 2.2 rom to a 2.3 rom. Is that correct?
3) What is the REAL advantage of moving to 2.3 roms? Will this change my life or am I likely to see just as neat stuff on the 2.2 roms?
4) Should I undo the One Click Lag Fix before monkeying with roms?
5) People always recommend flashing to stock before flashing to a custom rom. This is one of those things that seems to be taken for granted, what stock is. I can only assume that stock is the vanilla 2.1 rom that came with the phone when shipped. Is this correct and is this step really neccessary, as it seems a bit tedious to do before trying out a bunch of roms?

1) Not necessary, but no way to know till you flash a GB and see if it works (I recommend just flash them t be sure).
2) In your case yes. People with older phones changed to GB bootloaders for the 3 button fix. Keep in mind that GB bootloaders are backwards compatible with froyo and eclair, they also work on AOSP.
3) Its just the next thing. I saw way better battery life on GB than I ever did on froyo (but thats a matter of opinion). Only negative is on gingerbread I saw little bit of a drop on fps. IMO if you are willing to take the risk of flashing bootloaders give it a go and try it, else you can go back to froyo.
4) Yes remove lag fix if you ever flash anything.
5)This is a so so thing. If you have ClockworkMod then most of the times doing a factory reset+ cache clear+ Dalvik cache wipe will do the same thing as flash to stock. In the off chance it doesn't "flash to stock" can be achieved by flashing any "stock" or leak "stock" in the site. You should always prefer ones with out bootloaders to be safe.
