[Q] Some questions before instalyng CM7 - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am seriously thinking about instalying cm7 nightly on my phone. But before i do i have some and i was thinking maybe you can help me out.
1)I was readying that everything works exept for the radio. Is that true? and how does the gps work as good as in gingerbread?
2)How is the battery life compared to the stock gingerbread rom?
3)Is it stable enough for every day use?(i don't mind if i have to "adjust" something here and there i just don't want to miss my cals amd sms).
Thnx in advance.

hi.
1) everything except radio is working. Radio is even semi working on the latest builds.
GPS is sometimes stable and sometimes not. Can't day it was better when I was on stock ROM.
2) there are some battery issues, but I can make it last a day with moderate use
3) wouldn't say so. It is still in nightly build and no stable release is available yet.
I'm using it as my daily driver, but I don't mind some bugs here and there since the ROM is blazing fast.
My 2 cents on the matter
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App

I had it installed for about a week. Didn't try the radio but everything else seemed to work.
Was a bit unstable at times but I could live with it. I couldn't live with the battery life though so reflashed samsung firmware.

To answer all three questions ...
1) FM radio works in the most recent builds. As GPS is about the same as on stock roms. The hardware is the hardware after all.
2) battery life is just? Like on the stock rom ...it depends on a lot of factors. If you are one of those people who claims to get three days on a charge, then you will disappointed. Most users get between a day and a day and a half of normal use per charge with much greater performance than on stock roms.
3) I feel it is ready for daily use if you are the sort who enjoys regular updates and tinkering . However ymmv so the only way to know how you will like it is to flash it and see.

what he said ^^
battery life was fine for me and i last used CM about 2 months ago !!! so it must be even better now
its the same as MIUI except from the layout, and i been on MIUI since CM7 - 2 months. and it is definitely stable enough for day to day use.
everything works for me and fm radio does too !! but if it acts up, i just switch data on and listen to radio online, so thats no issue for me.
I would HIGHLY recommend you try it, the speed is well worth the little bugs. it will blow you away compared to stock / samsung based ROMs.
and if you like CM7 soooo much, take 10 mins to switch to MIUI and you will be even more amazed
and if you dont like it, just go back to stock. at least you can say you have tried it

Big thankyou for everybody that answer my questions.

True.
I will try it first thing in the morning. since i have to recharge my phone.
rschenck @ i am going to fallow your tutorial, but i noticed you sad that you need a froyo bootloader, why is that?
And 1 more thing: If i want to update cm7 do i allways need to reinstal all the apps or i can update the phone without wipeing all the data?

you can update without losing your apps, thats not a problem
and as for the froyo bootloader, you need this for sd card reasons mainly, amongst other things.
sometimes people cannot use internal nor external sd card, because of not having a froyo bootloader, thus resulting in most apps not working, camera not working and so on.

I was just like you... and i have decided to flash CM7 two days ago:
Really surprise, it's fast and stable.
No problem with call/sms.
Gps and battery life is ok like samsung rom.
Heavy 3D games like Dungeon Defenders work well.
But no TV-out, it's my only problem with this rom...

well i don't use the tv-out feature so i think it is ok.

Is CyanogenMod 7 Stable on Captivate

Is CyanogenMod 7 Stable enough to use every day on The Captivate. Thanks
Short answer: Yes.
Remember though that this is still in Beta. There's also a dedicated Q&A for CM7, and also a dedicated thread in the Dev forum as well. I suggest you to check for the list of current bugs and changelogs here: http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/...7-for-samsung-galaxy-s-phones-build-20110303/
I've been using it for about 10 days, and i find it to be one of the most stable 'roms' ive used. There are a couple of features that are not here yet, or not working properly, but nothing that stops me from using the phone day to day. Its fast, it looks good, and is the android experience I've been looking for.

The people who say it is stable enough for everyday use are not utilizing all of the phone's functions or are willing to live without certain features.

Agreed! It is stable enough, but you will loose some features, such as the camera is buggy and others, just check the CM7 thread for known issues. I suppose if u can live w/o those working property, then sure. For me, was not ready for a daily driver rom yet!
It is very stable. I would recommend using TheEscapist's kernel, which lets you OC and UV. By UVing I actually get better battery life out of it than I did the 2.2 roms.
adb not working
I tried this ROM for couple of weeks .
I am uninstalling because I was not able to get ADB working with this room. Device was not getting listed in my computer.
I was using it for a couple of weeks and today I switched back to serendipity only because of the external sd card mounting issues as well as a few other glitches, once they get the little things sorted out I will switch back in a heartbeat, its a great rom with many awesome features.

I believe you have to install the nexus s usb drivers to get that to work. I think it's mentioned in the faq.
Overall, the rom is stable in the sense that you can make phone calls, text, gps, wifi, and doesn't crash. Battery life isn't quite optimal and there will be some things that don't work or are buggy. When people say it isn't stable, it's more that it isn't fully featured or bug free. It works fine for doing phone tasks but may not meet your smart phone tasks.
I am currently on cm7.
The rom does have bugs but every rom out there has some sort of bug. So I think its pretty even. And I get decent battery life too..

Not even close to even. Many roms out there have no repeatable bugs.
No one is saying that CM7 is crap. It is what it is and hopefully will get better. If you can deal with bad battery life, several bugs, don't use all your phones features, and can trouble shoot problems, yes CM7 might be fun as a daily driver. If you answer no to any of the above, use one of the MANY 2.2 or 2.2.1 roms out there that are proven to work fantastically until CM7 goes RC.
The missing features argument is often over stated. I can only think of two, can't mount external sd, camera is not as good. Otherwise everything works

I agree 100%. I've been using it since it was first posted and it performs great for me...16+ hour on my battery. External SD not mounting is not an issue for me and as for the camera I use Vignette and it takes great pictures. It has been and will be my daily driver since the day it was released.
I don't use my phone for work our anything important, just communication, media, web, and entertainment. I can't imagine having to go back to 2.2 for any reason.

[Q] Which Rom is the stablest and smoothest ...

Hi ....
Perhaps you can help me and say which rom is the stablest and smoothest and fastest for the LG Optimus 2X P990 ... i have tried a lot of roms but they all have bugs ...
The fastest and stablest for me was this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032419 and then the 1.5 a version i think but the new version should be fine.
CM7 is also good since it uses less battery but there are some bugs in it still.
I'm a bit of a newbie to the O2X but I've tried a few roms and I've found that the modaco fr15 fear edition is pretty much like stock with a few nice tweaks so it's very stable from what I've seen so far, they've stripped pretty much everything out that you don't need so it's pretty quick too (well very quick).
I've put the over clocking kernel on too and with it over clocked to 1.4 ghz I've got 3976 on Quadrant. But after a while I started to get a few fc's so I put it back down to stock and everything was fine again.
I'm not saying this is what you should do, but I'm just letting you know my experiences with what I've tried so far.....
Also new to this forum. Anyway, I am using Fear r15 and have no problems at all. Very smooth, although I am missing some of my favorite LG Widgets ( Memo and Calendar ) , it is the stability without lags that made me switch to Fear ROM.
I'm on Modaco FR16(beta 4), and it's fast & smooth, and kind to your battery. My only problem is that my Exchange account keeps on disappearing, but it could be my Exchange server.

I'm thinking of going onto this rom cos I have noticed the fast battery drain on fr15... But i have only had the phone for a couple of days and i didn't really get a chance to see what it was like on stock, so I don't know whether its normal.
One thing I did notice was the fact the the music app is constantly running and even my task killer wont stop it. I know I probably dont need a task killer but its habit since I had my G1 many moons ago...
I'm using the CM7 nightlies and am very pleased with them. There are a few bugs and issues to be worked out (eg: no 801.2x support for WiFi), but for the most part, I'm very satisfied.
I only lost 5% in 10 hours with GMail push on .

I'm running CM7 nightly as well. The battery drain is basically non-existence and everything running smoothly. It also has quite a nice collection of customization options. If you can live with a few bugs then it's the rom to go!

Install Battery Calibration, charge to full then calibrate battery
You can also do the same by charging to full then wipe battery stats in recovery.
CM has a full list of APNs if there are some which aren't in use delete them off.
Flash your Radio to 0218, seem to work better than 0405 regarding battery issues. This will be at the expense of some call quality, to me it is worth it.
I am using CM7 at the moment and I have no intention of switching back.
Ive been using CM7 build 20 for some days and there was several things that was missing. It was stabel, but was using a great deal of battery.
So I switched over til BlazingDragon v1.7. This one is working wherey nice. Its based on the stock LG ROM so its only Android 2.2.2. CM7 is ver. 2.3.4.
Now i see that Modaco fr17 is out, but there is so many custom ROM out there so now Im not sure what to.
CM7 is getting better for every built they give out, but its not that good yeat, but Im sure it will be great when RC versjon is ready.
how about WGSPOELSTRA?
Im very happy with the latest madaco. CM is still way to unstable.

[POLL] Is CM7 SK3 ready for daily ROM?

Just wondering about your opinions.
If not, can you point out why?
i don't even install it but my answer is no.
people reporting some tiny but annoying bugs. i can understand and accept battery darining but not working p and backspace letter at the keyboard is another thing.
i'm waiting one or two more revisions.
no
from what i read have to many bugs
I voted for no only for the lag and some conflicts with 3gwatchdog but besides that it workes well for a daily use considering the fact that is a early release and it's a long buggy road 'till nightlyes.
Still unstable as what I see in the moment. And yeah, one or two more revisions, then we have to see. But I'm using it as my daily. Not always taking video, I have HTC_IME KB, not fond of using data access and so on..
My answer would be no, it's not. A good ROM for me is a stable one, a smooth looking one and performance... CM7 for Optimus Black has none of this so far.
And also I like using the web browser on my phone, this is nearly impossible with this ROM, but your Nova ROM was just perfect for my needs.
i´ve got a few problems with video calling in gtalk.
and some apps arnt working as they should (eg torch).
also my rear speaker is fu**ed up, but atm i dont know whether it depends on cm7.
things like battery drain and dead touch spots probably result from the fact that CM is just a ported software, so no optimizations are done especially for OB unlike on Nova.
so, for now, "no" to daily ROM
It is like driving a car, it has to be stable otherwise you will be stay on the road for whole day fixing stuff. I say so because I don't have a spare phone - but love to try the new thing and report bugs to you guys.
I am using it!
I think that can be used as daily (anyhow keep your back up close just in case)
I do not understand how some of the respondant can you say that something have a bad taste when you addmit that you never taste it?!

I say No. Is very stable and usable, but have some bad bugs, that do not allow daily use for many people. I use this ROM normally, but for identifying problems, bugs and help make this ROM better. Now i don't have any battery drain (5% per 8 hours - awesome), don't have lags.
can live with it, but I us it only for 1 day. I'm in the configuration phase for the moment.

+1, I'm waiting for the stable one..
Very usable, indeed... and I'm already using it as my daily since my main purpose for the OB is only for SMS, phone calls, taking pictures and web browsing (through WiFi)... That's it. Everything else is like novelty to me.
Though as the saying goes-- 'It's better to have it and not need it, than to not have it and need it.' -- There are features that has to be there, that needs to be stable, so as the need arises we'll have something up our sleeves. That's the reason why I still voted NO.

[Q] Which ICS ROM is the most mature to use on a daily basis?

I know that a lot here don't appreciate the "what's the Best ROM" threads but mine raises some important points and genuine questions that I believe the devs here need to take in consideration.
I've went through so many ICS ROMs and found that most don't even include a bugs list to know what works and what doesn't. So I'm directing these questions to you and hope to hear your opinion based on your experience as well as your knowledge of ROMs:
Which ICS based ROM is the most mature among the currently stable ones? Please post any bugs or point to what's not working if you refer to a ROM as a response.
Is it easy to get back to a Gingerbread ROM after flashing an ICS based ROM? Are there any caveats that i should know about before flashing any ICS ROM?
Thank you for your time and I appreciate your help and your opinions about this.

I've been using Team Rocket 1.5 and find it surprisingly stable (although, of course, there are problems. Just for a heads up, I would NEVER go back to Gingerbread. The girlfriend has Gingerbread on it and it's just so much snappier, not to mention the compatibility with ICS Applications (like Photoshop!). I'll name the few I have:
1. Toggle wifi via the 15 toggle addon and it will just kind of freeze, can't turn it on or off for a little while
2. Sometimes apps just kind of hang, when that happens just let it sort itself out and usually the phone will respond in about 15 seconds. No biggie to me.
3. I've had a SOD (Sleep of death) where the phone screen won't turn on and you end up powering down the phone; but honestly it only happened when I left Sync on in the background. Whether a coincidence or not. Haven't had it happen since turning that off during the day.
4. When trying to restore a backup I've had to restore the boot of the stock GB rom, then restore the ICS backup. Otherwise you really can't flash anything as the system isn't writable I don't believe.
Coming from the AT&T SGSII ICS ROM, this is BEYOND daily use. I just ordered this device off of Amazon and pretty much opened the package, rooted, and flashed this rom. It's fast, nearly everything works. Just have to deal with a few bugs. I'll let you decide whether or not to try it out, but I'm positive when I say I would NEVER go back. Good luck man!
None yet but for minimal bug disturbance, I'd say team rocket 1.5 is quite usable for daily use.

+1 I've been only on Rocket ROM v1.5, fast, stable and like ranger said, this is beyond daily use... really... no going back to GB as well...
It's so stable that I'm so reluctant to test anything else... no SOD, actually got it once and found out setcpu profile is causing it, uninstall and never had it for the past 5 days....
One thing that is bugging me is that the battery drain for the chinese ICS leak is unpredictable as the kernel is not so "refined" yet, you know what i mean
Now awaiting rocket v1,6 or midnote 2.1 if ever maxicet can get the N7000 kernel leak to work properly...
Should be getting my note tomorrow.
First thing I do is flash ICS after rooting etc...been running it on my nexus s since December and its beautiful.
Just got it on my transformer last week as well and its equally as good.
Any of you guys used midnote 2.0? I seen some vids on YouTube. It seems quite stable.
Any opinions in comparison to other ICS roms out?

I think its the criskelo ics v2 its very smooth without much fc! And telephoning and smsing work!
I have been using Midnote and I love it. I flashed all of the other ICS and they had too much battery drain for my tastes.
Midnote is perfect imo. It flashed perfectly, everything worked from the very start. The battery is amazing. Heavy usage and i charge only overnight. I wiped everything during each part of the process of flashing AND wiped after i let it boot the first time. No sod.no freezing.no nothing but smoothness. It is perfect to me.

Though I have had the odd freeze which lasts about 15 seconds then all works well again. Maybe once a day.
Ummm...
I'm using Midnote for 4 or 5 days
working good, charging it overnight, very view FC's.
Check the time on battery (attached)
* "Viber" doesn't work on it (free calls application), other than this everything is perfect
Also using Midnote and it's working fine. My SMS notifications sound sometimes doesn't work but other than that no complaints. Battery life is amazing and I haven't had any major problems. I had Rocket Rom 1.5 on it but that was giving me a lot of issues. To each his own I suppose might try out some other ones as well still praying that ICS comes out soon

[Q] [IMP!] Briefly.. My issues with all ROMs

Hello all
So basically, I've never been settled on a ROM, why? Because all of them gotta have one or more bugs that can't help but abandon it.
In general, I just hate how 80% of all cooked ROMs DO NOT support Video Calling via CDMA
in here are some details:
CM7/7.2 is awesome but it drains battery pretty fast and Video Recording doesn't work for me "it glitches" so i ditched it.
CM9/10 briefly.. They AREN'T stable. How? It might suddenly turn off and show you a bootloop or maybe a kernel get wrecked! that happens every week for me so I ditched this one.
AOKPs the're cool and amazingly fast, battery's life is great! and I just love em but for example. the best AOKP imo is XI9000 ROM but too bad that the Google Play Store is kinda retarded in this ROM "unable to find Facebook, YouTube, Thumb.. etc..in an inside search" I dunno if that applies to all AOKPs. Plus it might wreck when battery runs out xD
Gingerbreads! are just not suitable for a 2012 use! and STOCK ones are majorly slow on my device
So i'm gonna sum this all up by asking some couple of questions:
1- How to keep your ROM stability!, and how to avoid getting it wrecked?!

Hello all
So basically, I've never been settled on a ROM, why?

It's really weird that you're having issues with any ROM.
Using JB atm I flashed a stock 2.3.6, CM9 (TeamHacksung's build 16) twice and Mackay ROM afterwards and it's really stable for me. I don't see how your phone would just turn off or some other stuff.
Do you modify it much (undervolting, etc)?

What do u mean by the underlined sentence? I don't flash more than ONE zip file at a time!
He means two times in a row. Some recommend it, and sometimes it's necessary when flashing a rom with a different partition layout.
I think your issues either come from not flashing properly, or not spending enough time to learn about how processes work.
No offense intended, really, but this is a developer forum, and while most of us cannot ornament ourselves with that title, it is expected of us to read up on how everything works and spend some time working out basic issues ourselves.
For example, if you experience lag, fc or other unexplainable issues with a rom where few have the same problems, you should take the time and start flashing jvu with Odin and going down that road until you've got a clean install. Most people will just pass judgements and decide that the rom is buggy.
Not saying that you do this or that, but from your op it seems like you spend more time annoying yourself than trying to fix the issues
