New Google Music App Won't Install - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my Google Music invite and I'm in the process of uploading my library. While I was waiting I tried to install the Google Music app on my N1. It downloads, then tries to install itself and then I get the message Installation unsuccessful. Application cannot be installed in the default install location. My phone is completely stock. Not rooted or anything. It's running 2.3.4 GRJ22 with Launcher Pro. What's going on here?

It probably needs to be installed in /system/apps which is where the original is located. Without it coming to you from Google Ota, I am not sure how to move the file without root.

I wonder why it would be available to download from the market if that was the case.

Just give it a few tries. Mine is installed in /data, and it works fine...

Make sure that your default install location is set to internal or automatic (I think that is an option with stock Gingerbread). I remember reading that this failed if you had it set to install things to external.

I was thinking this was also in a stock install. I guess it is a CyanogenMod only thing. I'd guess this isn't your problem if you don't even have the option to change.

Good. I noticed you found the other post that I had seen about this. (I had the hardest time trying to find that, because I wanted to reference it for this thread.)
But for others, plug your phone into the usb and make sure you have adb set up (this isn't the place for a tutorial, there are lots that can be found through google). And make sure USB Debugging is turned on. Then enter this command on your computer.
Code:
adb shell pm setInstallLocation 0

Thanks Rod3, I was having the same problem not being able to install from the market. As it turns out I had my Installation Location set to "External". After changing the setting to "Internal", Google Music was able to install.
I'm using CM7.

[Q] I stupidly uninstalled gmail, how to get it back?

Long story short, gmail kept freezing on me so I used Titanium to uninstall it and now gmail doesn't show up in the market and the apk's that I download don't give me the option to install them.
Any ideas?
I was able to get the Android email program to sync with gmail, but I still can't figure out how to get the actual gmail program back on.
Sorry, didn't mean to hit "Thanks". Don't know where you got the gmail apks, but try putting one of them in system/app then reboot.
You also might want to try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=937752 but just run the commands for gmail

I assume you're running stock rooted.
Try this,
1. Download the signed Gapps.zip from here forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=642189 its in the second post.
2. Now from the zip file you downloaded. Extract the Gmail.apk and GmailProvider.apk. Using root explorer. Copy those files into system/app
(of course make sure you mount r/w)
4. Reboot your nook and you should have Gmail again.
Make sure you back everything up as always.
It worked for me. Hope it works for you as well.

I'd recommend doing what racks11479 said. But to see the system folder, get Root Explorer. It lets you see the deeper folders. Just don't break anything while you are down there.

You might not have the correct permissions set.
If you are able to ADB to your device. I've modified the honeycomb market install script from "jleecong" @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=937752 for the Eclair Gmail only.
All you gotta do is extract the zip to your adb directory and run (double click) "GmailInstall.cmd" and you should be good to go.
**As always *Use at your own risk* and make sure you've backed up.**
Hope this works for you.

Wondering if the gmail from eclair might be the answer to a similar problem I have. Been rooted since version 1.0 and gmail app would sync nicely. Rooted 1.1 using the nookdev instructions and that is working fine except gmail simply doesn't sync unless I go into accounts, reenter my account data and the sync screen comes up and then it'll sync. The android email app works just fine. Syncs seamlessly. So would replacing things help?
You could always google it

Question about your script.... I have a Nook Color that I have rooted and all set up. I'd like to pass it over to my buddy, but need to change my gmail info for his. Would this essentially allow me to do that without having to unroot, restore, reroot then reregister?
I am looking for a way to completely root a device with my B&N and gMail info, then allow someone else to register/set-up the device with their info. Possible?
If you just go into settings and About Device and do a "Erase and Deregister" you should still have root. And once rebooted they will have the option of registering the device for the first time.
They will have to go through the LogicZoom welcome process as well. So you might want to guide them in that direction if they don't know what needs to be done to get youtube and market working for the first time.
I've just done it myself to see if it works and yes it does.
Please use my suggestions as a guide. All actions you take are "solely your responsibility"
Just make sure you do a backup "just in case" before you try this.

Thanks, I will try this again with them. I wish I could be in person, but this is a phone support situation for me (grrr).
From the way they described to me, the "Erase and Deregister" worked for the B&N part but my gmail account was still there. So it didn't completely remove their stuff. Google Talk and the Calendar are still stuck on my gmail and not theirs.
Will try again though, and if anyone else has input I would appreciate it, thanks!

I renamed my the stock Gmail.apk to Gmail.apk.old and the same for the stock GmailProvider.apk.
Then I did as you suggested through Root Explorer. Now I have no Gmail at all in my apps list after a reboot.
I tried to launch it directly from Root Explorer but it says "There was an error parsing the package."
I renamed the new files Gmail.apk.new and GmailProvider.apk.new and renamed old files back to their original. I rebooted and Gmail popped up again in my apps list.
Why did your method for the new Gmail files work for someone else but not for me? What went wrong?

[Q] Apps not showing in market but will install from .apk

I have stock 2.2.2 WiFi that I have rooted with GingerBreak. When I search for items in the market it doesn't show them. If I search on the PC version of the market it shows them as incompatible with my device. However if I download the apk and install it works fine. For example Lookout incompatible, installed and working correctly. Is this an issue with my Streak, my market account or is it just tha the Streak can't run these apps?

The market checks for HW or SW compatibility. LookOut most likely can place phone calls and send SMS, neither of which the Streak can do.
But you're right, if you can otherwise get the apk they work fine.
The good news? Look forward to more of this in the future, the new market (the Windows Phone 7 looking crap) filters even more.
Thanks that explains a lot. Can I just copy the apk from by ZTE Blade or even Titanium Backup and install that. Also once it is installled does that mean it will never update either so each time I get an update on my phone I'll have to copy the apk over to the Streak.

Yeah, you should be able to sideload it, and yes, sideload updates. Very annoying.
Only thing Developers can do here is remove permissions to call number or SMS, maybe make them a "plugin" for their app..
What I don't get is some apps, like Android Agenda Widget. The free version shows in the market, but the Pro doesn't. No permissions differences between the two that I see! And it's only on my other tablet, Nook Color. DS7 it's fine. Go figure.
Still having problems. Having copied the apk over and installed it, it doesn't show up in My Apps on the store. If I use AppBrain it shows all the apps and that I have updates to do but as soon as I try to install the updates it goes to the market and they are not available. Current updates are Voice Search and Facebook.
Is there anything I can change on the Streak so that the market thinks it is a 3G streak so I can see all the other apps. Latest is I can't see any Gameloft games now. I tried upgrading to the new Market App but seemed to make no difference.
Googled it but there seems to be no way to reset my Market account without creating new logon and resetting phone which I would sooner not do but may be my only option.

I have been able to transfer "unsupported device" apps from one device to another (true all my devices are Tegra2 devices).I went into titanium backup and backed up the app, then copied it over to an extenal SD card and copied it to another device (to the titanium backup folder in that device) then went into TB and did an app refresh then restored the app (ONLY - not the data) then cleared the cache and rebooted the device. So far each time I have done this it has worked without any trouble.
I have not tried to update any of these apps on the " unsupported devices" yet (current revision) so I don't know if it can be done or not (sure I will find out soon enough) its worth a try,but true if you have to do this all the time it would be a PITA.
So good luck
A first step is to check your market filter settings..often a simple solution...

[Q] Installing an apk w/out market

In the ongoing battle to not have the market crash on launch (rooted stock 1.3 running 4.6.16 and I fixed permissions with ROM manager) I've noticed that titanium backup seems to be a start for a few potential fixes. That said - I have to actually install the bloody thing and w/out market access that's proving tough.
I d'loaded the apk via. the built-in browser. It's on my SD card. But I can't seem to find any way for the built-in app-laucher to....well, launch. When I run the apk's from the browser I get 2 options:
Complete action (running apk) using:
* App Installer (which when clicked says it's unable to install and that I should archive then unarchive the app and try again)
* Package installer (which says there's a prob. parsing the package).
I've got what I assume to be non-market app's checked off in NC Tools (it's the blank box in NC Tools with nothing next to it that people talk about).
Any suggestions to get the bloody apk working?
Sounds like a badly packaged .apk. It also has that error whenever I try to install Honeycomb specific apps.

In the NC tools I do have what is supposed to be the non-market installs checked off (but with it being a blank box of text next to it, I'm not positive).
I guess it might be a bad apk, but I got it from the TB site directly. I tried ES File Explorer too. It would seem all apk's I'ev tried give the same error. I'm not sure if maybe B&N somehow hobbled the ability to install apk's with their 1.3 update.

I had CM7 on for a few days, but with the market not working well on it (market determined that the nook wasn't compatible with any of the apps, even with the LCD resize), and with a subscription to PC mag via. B&N I went back to stock rooted 1.3.
Any other suggestions? I was thinknig of trying MIUI if things in CM7 or the Nootered stock don't resolve themselves.

MIUI is just a themed outdated cm7. I don't see how that would help.
Can you get any .apks to install?

I just finished the Android SDK/Java route to push apk's to the NC. I've successfully installed Titanium, ES File explorer, Opera Mobile and SwiFTP to my NC via the SDK route. While I don't have market access, I guess it will be ok for now....I sure wish the Market worked properly though....nice 'n convenient. Ah well.
[EDIT] One thing I did try to get the market to work was uninstall Flash 10.3. I put on 10.2 & reset permissions. No dice for what it's worth....if somebody's keeping a list of things that don't work.

Interestingly, if I try to use the default browser to install appbrain (www.appbrain.com/install), or even Opera mobile to install it, .... it results in a flash screen (rotating flash dots in the middle) that crashes after a second....just like when I (attempt to) launch the Market.

[Q] I can't install Amazon app store

I just rooted again after boot looping. 1.3 and using Manual Nooter per instructions in that thread, fixed permissions in RM, USB debugging is checked. I'm up and running just fine, however I can't install Amazon App Store. I click on the .apk in the downloads of my browser and I get two choices to use, " App Installer", and "Package Installer". I try App Installer and I get "The application was not able to install onto your device. Please "Archive" and then "UnArchive" the application to try again. How do I "Archive" and then UrArchive" the application?
I try Package Installer and I get "There is a problem parsing the package".
I've reset and rooted numerous times because of boot loops issue, which I'm pretty sure I've solved, but every previous time I was able to install Amazon App Store.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Well I am not an expert by any means but it sort of sounds like a bad file have you tried deleting it and re-DLing it? You can DL it right onto the nook via email for example, Amazon will email you the link. If it's any problem other than that then it's way out of my league. Hope that works!
I've downloaded the .apk numerous times with stock browser and Opera Mini, and tried downloading it from the email amazon sent me with the download link. Same issues with all attempts.
Have you tried opening it with a file browser like Astro? Also try downloading the apk to your PC and then copy it to your Nook via USB, the Download on your Nook could be getting screwed up.
Also if you have ADB setup you can try running the command "adb install [insert apk filename here]" to try to install the Amazon Store.

For what it does it is cheap for $4. We need to pay for apps or else developers will quit building them.

Please Help - This doesn't solve my problem
Just rooted 1.3 again with both manual nooters. Everything is working fine now but I want to download Amazon App Store from The web.
It downloads fine but wont install - gives me a "your phone is protected" warning box saying that I should go to Settngs/Application and check the box to allow for outside downloads.
I DON'T HAVE AN APPLICATIONS OPTION UNDER SETTINGS. I had one when I was running cm7 - but not for a simple 1.3 manual nooter.
I have looked everywhere I can think of - can anyone help or have a work-around?

[Q] Installing .apk

Okay this feels really dumb, but I'm trying to install an .apk
Easy enough, right? I find the apk via a file explorer and click to install. Android prompts me to allow apks to be installed, I allow them. Then the installation starts. Its going well, but suddenly the Note 3 restarts and the apk isn't installed.
I've factory reset it a few times and tried multiple times. I'm running stock. build number JSS15J.N900AUCUBMJ5 and the apk I'm trying to install is from the humble bundle. (particularly Ravensword 2, Star command, but even trying to install other apps via apks cause my note 3 to reboot)

Make sure that allow mock locations in checked in developer options and unkown sources is checked in security settings. If those are both checked and it still doesn't work you can push the app into the system manually, I use ES file explorer. Retrieve your apk from downloads, long press and copy it, go into device/system/app and paste, change apps permission to rw-r-r. To change the permissions long press the app, then click more on the bottom right then properties/change the permission to rw-r-r. you must be rooted to do it the manual way.
