Any way to force google maps/kaiser to use wireless traingulation instead of the GPS

So the internal GPS is one of the primary reasons I wanted the Kaiser, but when it comes down to it, it's the rare occasion that I actually use the GPS for much, especially stuff outside of basic "where am I" and "how do I get there" with gmaps...
Even when using quickgps, sometimes when I need to know where I am in relation to somewhere I'm going, quickly, it can still take way too long to pick up sat signals. I was in the car with a friend the other night (this is a guy that I constantly harass for having an iPhone (and he harasses me for the opposite)) and when we both pulled out our phones with gmaps, he knew right where we were, instantly, while all I could do was sit there and try my hardest to not make excuses about why I wasn't picking up a sat signal quickly.
Unless I'm using other GPS software, for my uses with gmaps, I'd really rather just be able to use the triangulation that non-GPS phones use. I tried turning off the GPS (GPS program port: None) in settings, but gmaps just searches anyway, not finding any hardware and/or sats.
Is what I want to do possible? I'm sure I'll get several responses on how I can speed up my sat signal pickup, which is NOT what I'm looking for. I just want to be able to use gmaps "My Location" without using the internal GPS, thus saving battery as well as getting a quicker pickup on where I am...

Yes, what your asking for is just using "My Location" without GPS. I use "My Location" all the time it does not activate my GPS. Here is an article that confirms "My Location" does not use GPS.

I know that My Location can be used without GPS, I'm just wondering if it's possible on a Kaiser. Assuming you have a Kaiser device, what and how do you have it set up so that gmaps doesn't activate/use GPS, but instead uses the cell towers?

On my device using GoogleMaps 2.0.0.11 the option for My Location works separately from Use GPS. The location (within 1.7KM) is picked up within seconds, GPS does take longer but is accurate to individual rooms within my home. The Cell based locator is obviously dependent on your Carriers Cell towers and I know in the past I have been unable to get a location over HSDPA or 3G but GPRS worked. Now though on TMobile UK at home I can get my cell based location using any non Wifi data connection.

Ah, my apologies. Turns out I was not using the latest version. I've installed v2 with separate GPS/My Location, and My Location without GPS works great!

By default My Location DOES NOT use GPS. You have to enable GPS from the menu.
Yes I have a Kaiser (actually 2at&t Tilts) and use Google Maps (v2.0.0.12)

Yes, I found this out by installing the latest Google Maps (after my last ROM flash, I installed gmaps from a cab I already had on sd, which was apparently not a recent version).
Thank you - I love the fact that I can use gmaps without GPS now for the quick "where am I" without having to wait, but can still use GPS when I feel like it, and also still have it enabled in Settings for use in other GPS programs.

Disable Data and Keep GPS? How do you do it?

I have two questions really..
I live in the Netherlands and have an always-on internet subscription... but when I travel abroad I want to do the following:
1) Turn off all data transfer so I don't get charged for things that want to update or whatever
2) Keep the GPS functioning
Using the connections manager, I turned the data connection off, but this didn't work at all. It would just connect through the phone line anyway. I resorted to deleting all the internet settings from the phone which was a difficult, lengthy and frustrating process, and I ahd to put them all back in when I got home.
Also, after I did that, GPS did not work anymore. I could not find a setting anywhere to turn on or off the GPS by itself... is it linked to the data connection? I couldn't actually turn the data connection on in the connection manager when I deleted the settings... I couldn't access the GPS at all from any program unless I had the data connection on, and working. Is that right, and... isn't that weird?

Yes, it's weird. I faced same problem. Solutions?
To totally prevent data connections, you have 2 choices:
1- remove GPRS/3G configuration from provider
or
2- nodata! That's what I use
About the GPS not working while in fligh mode, I turn on bluetooth and then GPs works

or alternatively rename the access point name...
e.g. mine is "orangeinternet" I stick a character in front "xorangeinternet" and thus it fails to connect if you do accidently start up an app that tries to connect.
I know it works for Orange - cant confirm it with other providers but I suspect it will be the same.
Can anyone else on other provider networks confirm?

Use "Advanced Config 3.2" Available on this site.
Menu->More Settings->Connections
You can disable each network connection. does not affect GPS

To use solely the GPS you need to install a specific GPS enabled stand alone software on your phone, such as TomTom or IGO.
Otherwise you will be using a AGPS data connexion which is expensive abroad.

actually it does... tomtom7 doesn't work if you're in flight mode (no problem with igo8 thou).

Wifi location not accurate

Not really a phone issue, I know that it's with either my router or my modem (not sure how it works exactly). When I disable my GPS and put my phone on Airplane Mode (but leave Wifi on) and go into Maps, my location is incorrect. It is showing me at my old house (a few hundred miles away from where I live now). How do I go about telling whatever tracks where my router is, that it's not there anymore?

You said you turned the gps off? You have to have gps ON..lol. It is probably showing you the last location it was turned off. So turn the gps on and make sure it is receiving a signal from the birds(satellites). You cannot get a gps signal with gps off and it will not show a correct location. Wifi is for downloading the maps to show where your gps location is.

Wifi is also for location. Hence, Wifi Location. Go away until you understand the actual question.

Its not an accurate location tool, GPS is accurate the other is not.
If I turn GPS off I am usually in the middle of a field quite a way from my house, it uses the network, not WiFi (IIRC)

Obviously no one knows what I'm talking about, so nevermind.

GPS still terrible on 2.3.4 sprint tab

First of all, yes I searched the forum, and google, and tho I might have missed something, I think I've tried most of the reccommendations out there (short of a custom rom because those are in short demand for the sprint tab.)
I did a wipe / odin to 24, updated to 28, then 2.3.4. Gps still sucked, so I flashed rooted 2.3.4 and tried 3 or 4 gps "fix" apps for this thing, none of which have made any difference. I can get gps but it takes FOREVER, usually around 5 minutes. Often it will find 6 or more satellites too, but just sit there and not lock on or whatever to any, then randomly it works. I've tried every combo of toggling gps, soft reset, and hard reset.
In texas I had the same problem on froyo, now I'm in Costa Rica... I'm assuming since gps stands for GLOBAL positioning sys that where I am shouldn't affect it. But its just SO darn slow ilby the time it starts working its useless.
and I test it outside on sunny days with open sky, so I know that's not the culprit. Nor ia it in a case when I try
Any thoughts or ideas at all would be MUCH appriciated as I really need to start using my tab for mapping.

I think you're doing it wrong son. Try these settings. In wireless and network, mobile networks, uncheck 3g data. In location and security, check both use wireless networks and use GPS satellites. I assume you are using wireless tether from phone to give tab internet. Turn wifi on obviously. You do have the modded wpa_supplicant file for ad hoc for the tab right? I tried timing myself after doing all those settings I said and how long with GPS tools app and Google maps to get a lock and it was immediate. This is coming from never have using the GPS since the complete back to stock with ea24 all the way up to rooted gb.
People are saying to put the tab into airplane mode. If you want to use the GPS or things like weather bug or radar now, you at least need to have location from network enabled for it to assist in finding your location. You're not pulling data from the tower, the tower is helping the apply to locate where you're at, along with the GPS. GPS alone and wifi didn't work for me. When I enabled the settings I told you about, the GPS apps immediately came to life and worked great.

I'm in costa rica with a cdma sprint tab, so 3g is always disabled, and because there is no service I disabled network location because I figured it couldn't get that data with no signal, and my location kept going to some random location around the world. And when I need gps I'm out far away from wifi hotspots too, so not worried about that setting I don't think.
Wifi hotspots only, no tethering, and I don't have the wpa supplicant file, but again no tethering so I'm assuming that is not nessicary.
And in Airplane mode it never gets a lock. At least on froyo it never would. I would turn airplane on then activate gps and it never ever found a satellite. I researched it and I thought in airplane the gps couldn't function until airplane mode was disabled again, even if gps toggled...
I appriciate your input, but I don't think its going to work given my circumstances.

Localization in 4.4.2

Anyone could pls explain how localization now works on 4.4.2?
In 4.3 I could have localization thru 3g on and gps off, then I'd turn gos on with a switch when using maps on nav app, and ogff again when finished.
Now all I have is a switch that enables/disables localization and an option with 3 way of working: 1. gps + 3g + wifi, 2. Gps + wifi or 3. gps only.
I am lost... If I choose option 1 than is my gps always on sucking battery? If I choose 2 how can I easily enable gps when in nav app? And if I choose 3 how can I still have google localize me thru wifi when localization is off?
This is so stupid, they should have kept 3g and gps localization separate...

Apparently the options are practically the same as in 4.3 and just a little bit changed on 4.4.
High accuracy = Should enable both AGPS & onboard GPS Sensor to fetch your location.
Battery saving = Should only use AGPS.
Device only = Should only use the onboard GPS Sensor.
where
AGPS = uses an internet connection(3g and/or WiFi) to get your location.
GPS = uses the built in GPS chip inside your device and connects to GPS satellites to fetch your location.
So in your question.
High accuracy mode in android 4.3 is just like checking both "GPS Satellites" & "Google's Location Service" option at the same time.
Battery saving mode in android 4.3 is just like checking only "Google's Location Service" option.
Device only mode in android 4.3 is just like checking only "GPS Satellites" option.
You could just switch to high accuracy mode when you want to use maps with GPS on and switch back to battery saving mode when you're done using it.

Anyhow, before I could leave 3g localization on all the time and enable/disable gps with a switch, now I have to go into the option to do this

There really isn't a need to keep GPS off while not using a location app. Your phone will only turn on the GPS receiver when an app asks for your location. It doesn't just constantly stay connected to satellites while the phone is in your pocket. I always have GPS enabled and there is no effect on battery life.

Actually aGPS still uses satellites. It just uses your data connection to do one or both of the following:
1. Download satellite reference data to know the position of satellites more quickly for a faster fix
2. Uploads your GPS signals your phone gets from the satellites to an external server which can calculate your location more accurately using things like atmospheric conditions and weather
aGPS is why a phone can get a GPS fix in seconds while a dedicated GPS device might take much longer bc it has to download the reference data from the satellites itself.
What you are referring to is a network estimated location, which isn't the same as aGPS. In fact your phone will always have aGPS enabled if you have GPS enabled.

Well if that's the case with AGPS care to explain how Nokia Maps were able to pinpoint my location years ago when I am using my good old n80? It has assisted GPS but no onboard GPS and as far as I can tell nokia map works on that phone.

Not sure if there's any widgets for the new GPS settings of google. TBH though for every upgrade of android eversince jellybean I'm starting to get turned off from android. They're like taking out the features of android 1 by 1.

Got to say i hate the new GPS switch layout, was wondering what the hell they'd done when i first saw it.
Someone will create a switch for it somewhere along the lines, in the mean time just leave it on battery saver mode and switch to high accuracy when you need to drive or something similar which requires full use of GPS.
If the community (us and everyone else) makes enough noise about it they may bring it back.

well as @301stSpartan says, even if in high battery mode, it seems the gps is fired only if an app is requesting, so at this point i wouldn't mind and leave it always in high mode

Yea you could but the amount of apps that fire up the GPS is quite a lot, and if youre inside then it's going to try to communicate with satellites and it won't be able to, it'll hit battery, i've no doubt about that.
