[Q] Strange quirks after rooting - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My warranty expired, so I figured why not root... but it's turned out to be quite the ordeal to get things back in working order.
I unlocked my bootloader, flashed amon ra's recovery, and then tried to flash a pre-rooted gingerbread rom from another sub-forum. I got stuck on the "X" after a reboot, and couldn't get past that after several attempts, so I tried flashing CyanogenMod 7.0.3. That worked, but it really wasn't what I wanted.
A little frustrated, I used the passimg.zip method from the wiki to go back to froyo and let it update back to gingerbread. But the gingerbread update kept failing immediately upon trying to download it. I told it to factory reset and format my sd card, which seemed to fix it enough to download and update successfully.
But now I can't seem to add contacts to my phone. It says the contact is saved, but it doesn't get added to the list. If I dial manually, the name I saved shows up like normal during the call, but is still not displayed in the contact list. I tried loading contacts from my SIM card, but same thing, says they are saved, but nothing is displayed in the list. I looked for settings that may hide them, but couldn't find anything.
I've tried several factory resets now, and reflashing amon ra to preform wipes, but it's the same every time. I can add contacts immediately after a reset's first boot and have them display normally, but if I let the screen timeout, new ones fail to display when added afterwards. Rebooting seems to have no effect.
I feel like I'm missing something simple here, but I can't for the life of me figure out what. It worked fine prior to me mucking with it.
Any ideas on what I can do to solve this?

Accounts and settings. Sync contacts.

I really didn't want to do that, but for some reason it worked.
It added my phone contacts that already displayed normally to "my contacts" in my Gmail account, the ones I added later that refused to display on the phone were added to "other contacts".
Since the sync, I can now add numbers to my phone and they display normally... but why did it do this in the first place? I assume it was something I did when setting my phone back up the way I like it, but what?
I really want to avoid doing it again in the future, it's an annoying step go back into gmail and delete my phone book from it when my N1 borks up like this.

[Q] Can't register after flash back to stock? Was I actually successful?

I'm having the same issues as takef0cusin above, arriving in a slightly different way. I was properly registered on 1.0.0 and used auto nooter 2.12.15. That went fine and there were no problems, but I decided to upgrade to 1.0.1 after some Wifi dropping issues. So I decided to flash back the the clean stock ROM.
I did the re-image holding down the power button 8 times, then I did the "three button data reset". Everything seemed to go fine, but it still started with the Logic PD Zoom screen and it never gave me the opportunity to re-register. Owner and Account are listed as unavailable. I then tried again using the "Erase and Deregister Device" method. Same results.
The new icons from the rooting are there, which makes me wonder if I actually had a successful flash back. I tried to register with the Gmail icon. It let me put in my email username and password. I acts like it is going to work, starts to load my conversations, then returns to the NC Home screen. I also tried to go through YouTube, but after registering I get "There was a problem with the network [401]". The Wifi still works, it still gets me the news, but the weather won't load because it says it there's location available.
What do I try next? I'm afraid to do anything because of all the warnings to re-register the NC first thing after any of these upgrades.
Thanks and Happy Holidays, OKMD
I've been through all this twice now. The second time was exactly as you have described and all I did was to redo the 3 button data reset. I was then able to re-register it.
Did it pop up to tell/ask you to register, or did you have to go looking somehow? Mine isn't asking and I don't know how to force it. Thanks.

If memory serves, after clearing data it comes up with screens where you select time zones, state, city, etc and then it asks for your user name and password. All this happens automatically after you do the 3 finger data reset.

[Q]B&N authentication service!!

*2nd EDIT*
Okay now I don't feel so dumb, I renamed the otacerts.zip thing but i am still getting reset
I did find an application that is call BN authentication service. I can't uninstall it from the normal App installer, anyways to get around this? Like ADB
*EDIT*
Ha I feel so dumb, I just needed to reboot, then change the names. So after i changed the names I rebooted again and its all good now
Thanks eyecrispy

I have a rooted nook color with a stock 1.0.1 rom, CWR, and a over clocked kernal. I have only 1 real problem, I guess besides not being able to download from the marketplace - my nook keeps on getting reset by B&N! They don't unroot it, and my recovery is still intact, but it really sucks not being able to connect to their shop. It's not that I would use their shop it's just that I accidentaly press it every now and then and it resets my device. I have to back up my device once everyday to make sure nothing gets deleted because sometimes, even when I don't press the shop button, I don't even have to press anything, it resets the device after its been connected to wi-fi for a while. Like the other day, i just set it down to go to the restroom, I come back to find it at the Android setup or the quick setup selection page. When I select Android setup when I press the little android nothing happens. When I select the B&N quick setup it, i can do that no problem. So now I just turn it off from there and load my back up through CWR.
Anyways, is there anyway to stop it from connecting to the B&N authentication service or something? I have seen people with similar problems, but no one seems to have it happen to them over and over and over again.
Plenty of folks have reported this continuously happening. Have you disabled OTA updates?

Really? All th threads I have read people say it happened once but after a reboot it was fine. Maybe I just missed it. If you could please tell me how to disable OTA updates that would be a big help. Thanks
*EDIT*
Found what you meant, I am trying to use Root Explorer but am having no luck. I gave it superuser permissions yet it still wont let me changes any system files

[Q] Big crash today, all contacts, settings, unprovoked.

So this morning when i got up to get to work, i looked at my SGS, checked the gold prices app, stuck it in my pocket, then went to work.
at about 3pm i took out my phone to fiddle with it for a bit, and it was at the initial setup screen, the series of promts you get when you first switch on the phone after unboxing it... i skipped through and found that all my settings were gone, and all my contacts were gone, except for the stock crap that comes with the simcard.. my history was gone, but some of my SMS's had survived.
None of the applications were gone however the menus had been re-arranged, and several of the apps froze immidiately when they were opened; it seems all settings within the applications have been erased as well.
The applications that did not open, i deleted then re-installed from the market, and the fresh downloads seem to work.
I have managed to scrape ~15 contacts from the few sms's that are in the history, but this is well short of the ~400 i have lost. I would be able to get more back if i could sync it with facebook, which isnt working (says "sync is down"). I stupidly dont have anything backed up on my computer, and an old (januaryish) backup of my contacts on my dads computer i couldnt find the file for.. (probably deleted). The reason i didnt do a backup is because i didnt expect this to happen, i dont mod the phone or do any dodgey downloading that would cause such a crash.
I have no definate idea what could have caused this, as the phone was running totally without issue for ages, and had no major setting changes or application installs for weeks before today. I know it happened today, because in the morning i checked the goldprices app, which worked fine, and after the crash that was one of the applications that didnt work. Meaning it happened between 9am and 3pm. During this whole time the phone was in my pocket, it had no impacts, and i was not near any machinery that might emit strong heat/magnetic fields all day. My only suspiction, is that i was given an iphone for the day, which i stuck in the same pocket.. and maybe the added magnetic field / radio signal could have stuffed the SGS up.
This really is a bad thing for me, so if anyone has any ideas on how i could get my contacts back i would definately appreciate it.. I thought about putting in a complaint to samsung but ive known for a while that they dont care about their own customers..
hey bro which rom where u using??
they should automatically sync with google, unless you unchecked the option.
check under settings options in contacts and see if there is a way to restore them, i know there is but its been so long since i have been on a stock samsung rom i cant remember...
Hi mate, i flashed a kernel to it weeks ago and thats about it, thisi s what it says in settings/about phone
firmware version: 2.2
baseband version: i9000DTJP3
kernel version: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #22
build number: FROYO.DTJP5
cheers
I need to bump this up because this has happened to me AGAIN
This time there was no iphone, the phone coincodentally was sitting in front of me and i watched it reset itself, when it booted up it was in the initial setup screen, after which i got force close errors for facebook and gmail.
It appears this time that my contacts and messages and apps, and data, and settings... did not get lost, however MOST of the applications, including the stock ones and autostart ones, give Force close errors, including the force close errors i get on startup from the stock gmail app and the facebook for android app.
last time i did not remedy this, i scavenged what data i could, and deleted/re-downloaded the applications that didnt work, note; this didnt work for all of them.
I cant however delete the stock gmail app and i would rather treat the source of this issue than its symptoms.
Have already tried: factory reset/data wipe from CWM recovery boot
cache partition wipe
fix permissions
went to attatch it to kies to see if updating the firmware would work, but clicking 'update' i get a strange error in a non-english language, and the update does not perform.
Although now i cant even get it to connect to kies..

[Problem] My phone has "remembering" problems

I suspect my issue is a problem of the phone not remembering some settings. I am using the latest CM7 nightly as of this morning (155), but this has been an issue for quite a while.
If I am having only one problem, it manifests itself in a several ways...
1) My facebook contacts won't STAY in sync. Every time i turn my phone on, I have to re-sync my facebook contacts if I want to see them.
2) The first time I send a text from outside the SMS program (sending a text via Vlingo for example) after a reboot, the system asks me which SMS program I want to use. It remembers that choice until the next reboot - when I have to chose again.
3) The first time I tap an internet shortcut, the system asks me which browser I want to use. It remembers that choice until the next reboot - when I have to chose again.
4) I have to re-sign into Twitter the first time I open it after every reboot.
There are other similar issues - none major, but annoying nonetheless.
What am I missing? I've gone through all my settings and can't find one for "Remember all my $hit" . I've run the phone with sync on, and I've run it with sync off - still the same results.
Any help would be appreciated.
I had something similar happen at one point about 6 months ago. I ended up (after much trial & error) just reflashing the whole danged thing....my sd card, recovery, and rom. No issues since.
Not sure what happened, although that was the time I was really flashing lots of different ROMs.

Thanks for the tip.

Help rooting/enabling adb on bootloader & google locked Marshmallow

I bought a Moto X (2014) with a broken/damaged screen for super cheap. When I bought it, it vibrated and made sounds so I knew it was functional. The next day, the alarm woke me up so I turned it off. The day after it happened again, so I just let it ring under a pillow until the phone died. Yesterday, the screen replacement finally arrived and I performed the switch myself.
When I tested the screen before closing it back up, the phone wouldn't boot, but the screen itself appeared to be functional so I closed it back up. The infamous green light issue was occurring, no doubt due to the fact that I let the battery drain completely then left it in a drawer for about a month, in addition to God knows what the previous owner had done to it.
After several hours of hooking it up to various chargers and cables and computers and performing a seemingly infinite number and duration of button combinations, it finally booted up, and started to charge normally.
Only then I realized it was still protected by the pattern code from the previous owner. Due to fear of FRP, I kept trying to crack the pattern code to no avail. Eventually I said frick it and went into bootloader mode to try and unlock the bootloader, but it turns out that adb is not enabled, and neither is the "allow bootloader unlock". So I said frick it and hit factory to reset the phone, but the phone simply rebooted. Odd. Alright, so I hooked it up to a computer in bootloader mode and performed fastboot erase userdata. Upon reboot, FRP had kicked in.
Hours of searching yielded various methods of bypassing this, none of which worked. However due to the blessing/curse (more on that later) that it's on Marshmallow, I was able to use a Google Assistant loophole to access pretty much the entire device (minus Google apps, including the play store). This included the settings app. To my dismay, I'm unable to activate dev options and the reset button is greyed out, no doubt due to a group policy preventing these functions until the owner's Google account is entered.
I came across a method that showed a lot of promise. Through the use of an app called Quick Shortcut Manager, it allows you to log into any Google account and once you reboot afterwards, FRP is no longer an issue. However in my case, since I seem to be exceptionally lucky, during the sign in process, the phone reboots unexpectedly. How very odd. Retried several times under various conditions, including Force Stopping all Google apps (which returns the navbar buttons, without function, and also the notification tray but not quick settings).
Alright. I installed Telegram via apk and logged in. As soon as I logged in, the phone reboots unexpectedly again, which leads me to believe that this random reboot occurs whenever ANY account is added to the device (because Telegram accounts are saved under Settings > Accounts).
Knowing I'm stuck with a locked bootloader and no way of unlocking it without accessing dev options which I'm unable to do, I decided to try flashing an earlier build. I downloaded 4.4.4 and 5.0.1 factory images and proceeded to try flashing 4.4.4, to no avail, since apparently downgrading is also impossible with a locked bootloader. Most commands returned a "remote failure" response. I continued anyway and upon reboot I discover that nothing has changed. I've tried this with both system images.
I tried RSD Lite as well but it won't even detect the phone in fastboot/bootloader mode (on Windows 10 Insider Preview). Tried with admin privileges. The "fastboot flash" option in the Config menu was greyed out for some reason.
I've hit a roadblock. I'm so ready to just toss this phone out the window but I decided to come here and ask for help first. Please, XDA. Do not fail me.
P.S. I've lost contact with the owner because I bought the phone on a local equivalent of Craigslist so neither the ad nor my communication with him still exists. And even if by some miracle I managed to find one, it would do me no favors if he would remove the account via Google Device Manager because I've already reset it. The only thing he can do for me is log into the phone using his email and password and then reset it, which would require going somewhere with WiFi that is also public all the while making sure he doesn't try to steal the phone back now that it's fixed.
Edit 2: Ever since I added the Telegram account, the phone is no longer usable, since it reboots unexpectedly as soon as it connects to WiFi and discovers that an account has been added to the device. I'm going to reset it again so I can continue using it with these limitations.
I remember once on a Samsung device I found a pre-rooted IMAGE file and flashed it via fastboot and that fixed everything. I can't seem to find anything of the sort for this phone though.
I've found instructions on how to convert a ZIP ROM into a system image, but those instructions are only for Linux.
