I'm looking for an app of some kind that will automatically arrange apps in the app drawer in alphabetical order.
I KNOW I can do this myself by dragging them around multiple screens, but its difficult and tedious when you have many apps and have to do it when you install something new.
Can it be that complex to write an app that does this?
A lot of other launchers have this by default, eg Launcher Pro, Go Launcher, so I recommend you try one of them.
Yes, I've been told this too. But I am not really looking to install something that will change the entire appearance of the phone, I just want this one simple feature, and I am happy with the appdrawer otherwise.

Why can't the GSM versions of the Galaxy S line turn off the Touch Wiz UI, just like the CDMA versions as noted on BriefMobile.com? Anyone else notice this?
"turn off"? Install another launcher/homescreen maybe? The homescreen is the only part of touchwiz I dislike, I find the enhancements to the contacts and notification bar quite useful.

This is just a question, but isn't it still there if you put something on top of it? Is that different from disabling it in settings for CDMA versions and does that effect app lag and UI response?
The app lag is largely due to poor I/O performance on the /data partition. There are numerous other foxes for this, but removing TouchWiz will have little impact.

In my experience, even with the lagfix, TouchWiz was very sluggish (I run a minimal amount of apps in the background so I know I'm not overloading my phone). Using LauncherPro though, I don't experience any lag at all.

That's what I'm trying to understand, say you use LauncherPro on a Captivate. Your not able to disable TWLauncher (like you can on an Epic), your only laying something over it, but it"s still there or am I looking at it the wrong way? Sorry for so many questions.

No Launcher Pro will run if you set it as the default and Touchwiz will not..It is still there but not active so it will not take any resources..

Thanks, that what I was trying to understand.
I tried removing the TWLauncher on my Captivate(after making a nandroid backup). I was sucessfull at removing it but the first time I rebooted my phone the android.process.acore service kept FC'ing every 15 seconds or so. So I eneded up restoring my backup. Be nice to figure out how to remove it w/out screwing the phone up. Nothing else seemed to have a problem with me removing it other than that service.

100% agree
You know..with me being new at anything dealing with a Android phone, can sometimes be a real PITA...
I had a problem with starting Launcher Pro. I did everything I could to use it but no matter what I did I couldn't access it. I was pretty sure I had to change the defaults to do this, but everything was grayed out so I couldn't. I PM'd the Impaler747 who has helped me and others like me out several times ( Thanks Bro ) and he confirmed the defaults had to be cleared..and suggested the normal approach to doing so,which was
OK, do this. Go into settings, applications, manage applications, and then scroll down until you find launcher pro. If it's not there, then you don't actually have it installed, which would be the problem. However if launcher pro is there, then select it. Scroll close to the bottom, and select "clear defaults"
After you confirm that you'd like to clear the defaults, hit your home button. A dialogue should come up and ask which program you'd like to complete the action with. Check the "use as default" box, and then select launcher pro, not ADW.

so I knew I was on the right track..but still couldn't clear the defaults..I knew I had it loaded..hell I even downloaded it to my PC then copied it to my SD..but I just couldn't change the defaults in ADWLauncher nor could I access the LP settings..
So..I headed to the LP forum and started researching as I should have first before bugging folks with NooB questions ..and low in behold a few others had similar issues..The problem was the given answer "Use Home Switcher" which will allow you to clear the defaults and go back to being able to switch between ADWLauncher and LauncherPro doesn't work with Froyo 2.2...So..figuring I had to find something else to work with CyanogenMod-6 V6.0.0-RC1 which is 2.2, I headed to the Apps market and listed right below HomeSwitcher was the answer to my needs..ClearDefaultHome..this little free app does 1 thing and 1 thing only and that is to allow you to clear the defaults and switch..No more problem
So..I guess many of the old timers here are probably thinking.."what a dumbass" ..and that's ok..cause I'm still on the bottom of the learning curve, like a whole bunch of folks about these..but I just thought I would pass this on just in-case some other newbie like myself was having similar issues..
So..to all the Newbies like myself..when things go wrong..Don't Panic..most all of the answers are available..just think it through..and go look for folks having similar problems..and what they did to fix them..Most of the time..along with a dash of common sense will get you through..

Go back into manage applications and depending on what launchers you have you need to find the one you are currently using; sense, launcher, adw and then clear default. Or you can do a search on xda for home selector and download and install on your phone. Once done open the app and choose which launcher you want.

HaHa!!!
See what happens when I don't read the entire post. I was using the app you mentioned, but think I found another one that is like Home Selector which lets you choose your default launcher. Does cleardefaulthome do that or just clear the default launcher until you press the home key?

The most effective way to change your default launcher is to physically uninstall ADWLauncher and push the Launcherpro.apk into your /system/app/ directory via adb. Firerat posted a very clean and effective method of doing this on the Cyanogenmod forum boards. If someone happens to have a link please post it. Remember as always nandroid first before screwing around with your system files.

While this may truly be a effective way of doing this,it isn't for the majority of folks like myself that have never or rarely ever use any type of command line prompt in a terminal window.
While I do understand the need to learn how to do this when working with these phones, especially while changing things around on them, for some of us finding a easier solution without a steep learning curve is really the fastest way of effecting the changes we need. Hence..the reason of my post to give a easy solution to those needing one.
Here is a posted review I found today of what I used to fix my problem..

I think I see what the issue was. You were trying to use launcher pro, right? If I read that right, you were. Clearing the defaults in the app you were trying to use would do no good, even if you could. You needed to clear the defaults in ADW, not launcher pro. Then mash home to get the dialog box.

I couldn't clear the defaults from either unfortunately. In ADW the clear default button was grayed out...and even though I had LP loaded..I couldn't open the program..even when I completely un-installed it from the phone and re down loaded it and re-installed it. That what was freaking me out I pulled the battery..re-booted several times...and was just about ready to start from scratch.. Luckily it didn't get that far and found the right app to fix the problem..

I'm working on my wife's and mother-in-law's NCs for Christmas. I don't want to replace the stock nook launcher, because both will be doing a lot of reading on the devices, and LauncherPro might make it a bit harder to use for the mother-in-law.
Is there an app that can launch just the app drawer from the notification tray? Since the stock nook launcher doesn't update new apps until you reboot, I thought that something sitting in the tray that could open all the apps on the device would be handy.
I've been looking all morning and was hoping that somebody here knows of something like that. Thanks!
Found something: in case anybody else has a need similar to mine, here is a two-app solution that I figured out.
App 1: Appicker. This app is sort of like an app drawer, it has some better features but it works just fine for launching apps.
App 2: Quick Launch. Quick launch is what makes the magic happen. It lets you set an app to launch with certain button presses. I went into the settings of this app and set Appicker to launch when I double click the home button.
Note: Appicker could be replaced by any other app launching app that you find that's better. I saw some others, like TaskOS, and I'm going to compare them all.
Let us know if you find a better solution. I'm outfitting a NC for a Christmas gift myself.
I went with adw launcher and configured it to open the app drawer with an upswipe.
Between that and the library tab being in the middle of the launcher I think my 80 yr old mom has it figured
Galaxy Tabs.....Worth every penny!!
the best way is to install soft keys...press the 'n' and have home set to soft keys.
then install your fav launcher and have the 'n' to always open that launcher.
wen you press the 'n' it will take you to the downloaded launcher but wen u press the soft keys home button it will take you to the original nook color home
this is wut I did for my moms nook color

SoftKeys is free, it works great. If you have some other need that it can't serve, post what it is. HTH.
With the atk app there is a widget you can place on the home screen that when pressed, instantly kills the active apps. The problem is, its kind of small and looks out of place with my theme, but I cant seem to find a way to change it. I'd like to be able to use a custom icon with desktop visualizer or something to be able to activate the widget's functions, but I can't figure it out.
ps, I don't want this to turn into a debate about whether or not to use a task killer, try to stay on topic.

You really don't need an app..... joking.
I've REALLY been wanting to know this as well. Likewise, it does not fit my theme or icons at all. It's the only out of place icon throughout all my homescreens.
I am also trying to do this, so I should probably add to the list of people and hopefully someone has a solution.
I'm using ADW and tried the custom shortcut but I can't find the activity that carries out what the widget does.
Any of the task manager activities just bring me into the app, rather than a direct autokill.
Also, I don't know if there is an android system activity for it, because I can't seem to find that either.
That's all I can contribute from my efforts anyway..
you'd have to do an adb decomile or winrar whatever then change the icon for the widget and resign the file. there are already versions floating around where people have done this already do some looking around...
Really? I've searched and came up with nothing, just back to here really, or other people asking the same thing..
If you had a link then that'd be handy, if not then thanks for the hint on a starting point..
I can change the icon for any application!

Yes,man!I already did different icons for widget actions!
I've done this before. All you need to do is rename the .apk to .zip and open it in your PC. Navigate to the icon image, replace with yours, rename the zip to apk push it to /system/app, fix permissions... dunsky.

I never thought of that, I'll do that now..
And while you're here, you might know..
since you can't put a widget in a dock bar, is there way to assign the same widget function to a desktop shortcut?
Similar to the activities in adw launcher..

Hey,
I see lots of people has been asking about google now in there launcher and many people knows that how to solve it without magisk.
There is workaround which i want to share may be it helps somebody.
First you need to install nova launcher prime which you can get like from anywhere just google it and then install a small app called google now companion app which is only supported by nova.
there is also a magisk version available of companion app but it is for those who just dont have root and magisk so by this you can have google now without having google now launcher and you will get google now integrated to the best launcher.
Thank you.
And sorry for bad english.

you just double tap the screen and it goes into google now or you go into settings and put it on a different gesture. as standard swipe down opens evie launcher but i switched that to expand notifications so now it works like the built in launcher, swipe down anywhere to open notifications. you may also want to switch off launch assisstant on home button or use it for something else if you are using gesture navigation as the last thing you need is more ways to launch assisstant lol. you could put the google now on that though then you can swipe up for home and swipe up again for google now.
Exactly. The most valuable real estate on a phone is the home screen because you can go directly to an app with one touch. The second most valuable real estate is the screen to either side of home and if you have a paged dock, the dock to either side. By using a swipe to the feed you wipe out an entire screen of the second most valuable real estate on the phone just to access one app when you can get to that same app by simply tapping a 1X1 icon, using a gesture, etc. I never have figured out why people like the swipe to feed, it wasn't done for us, it was done because Google has research that showed most people will not venture further than one screen left or right of home. Make one of those the feed and they knew they would up their take. In terms of user interfaces it's a straight up loss for users who in no way benefit from the loss of that screen for one app. But whatever.
Lots of launchers have a feed swipe BTW, if you absolutely insist on making your phone less efficient by wasting that screen you don't have to limit yourself to Nova.
