I recently broke my LCD and am currently in the process of either fixing or just flat out replacing my captivate. The question I want to possibly have answered is this:
Is there a way- and if so, how am I able to pull the data off of the phone and transfer it to my PC without being able to utilize the touch screen or even view it for that matter? I am unable to mount the SD to my computer because I have no way of actually doing that with the lack of a functional screen.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
So, to make sure I get this right, there's no functionality of the screen at all? Like you can't see nor interact with it?
Or can you at least touch and get results without having something to look at?

Trying to use the broken screen to navigate to mount it I doubt will yield any results, recovery works because it's navigated with the hardware buttons. Umm idk about stock recovery...but if you have cwm then, if you found a screen shot of it you could count the button presses to mount it that way.
Or wait i believe they send the insurance replacement and then you send in the broken one so you could flash cwm on them both and hold one in each hand, then synchronize button presses using the new phone as a guide. I did this exact thing, when my brother in law decided to chuck his cappy across the damn room. Only I used my captivate instead of the replacement. Worked like a charm. But the replacement did get here before we had to send in the broken one.

That's a key question. If you knew the key presses and screen gestures to get to TV Out, say. Would your phone's menus still browse in response to blind touch?
Simple test for that when fully booted:
press Power button to light screen
fully swipe any edge of the screen to unlock
press the lower left Dock icon (Phone), above and fully left of the Samsung name
an audible click means you loaded the dialer.
This is easy if usb debugging is on.
Adb pull /sdcard

Correct, there is no functionality to the screen. I can neither see nor get a response from touching it. The digitizer and LCD are both BUST. USB Debugging was not set either. Not sure I will be able to recover from this one.
Yes you can. Read my instructions. Even if you didn't have cwm you can use a button combo or a jig to boot into download mode and flash a kernel with it baked in. totally doable.
Look on youtube at mobiletechvideos channel he has a video for just this type of situation. You basically use your pc as your captivates screen.

Hey guys I think I actually did it. I was going to install the JPC Froyo Rom, and somehow booted into recovery in the ROM. Now whenever I turn the phone on it boots into recovery, and none of the button combinations work for putting it into Download mode so I can flash back to stock. On the i9000 thread it says that if you get into this situation you cannot flash back. Any of you guys run into this issue? If not then it looks like I'll be trying to convince an ATT rep to give me a new phone
Try powering off... Then hold vol up and down buttons then plug in usb.... That happened to me... Your not bricked

Nope
Nope sorry guys I know all of what you just said. As for plugging in USB while holding volume buttons, it'll just go to that battery charging screen, and adb doesn't work because it doesn't boot past recovery. Sorry guys but yes it was bricked. It's okay though because I just went to ATT and since they can't identify the problem they just replaced the phone
Thought mine was bricked one night, too. Same scenario. Tried dropping the SIM and SD card out even though I didn't think it would make a difference, but it did. Got to download screen and reflashed with ODIN.
Good luck.

If you pull the battery, then put the battery in. hold both volume buttons buttons, and then plug the phone into the computer, it didn't boot to download?
Im curious if you even tried to use the Odin one click thread
There are 4 or 5 ways in that thread on how to get to download mode. And how exactly does this relate to development...just another curious thought. Well, you are getting a new phone, just hope that ATT or Samsung don't try to figure out the cause of your phone being "bricked".
AGAIN!
Okay after this I swear I won't be messing around with Froyo anymore. Here's the story: I got into download on the replacement captivate. Tried to install JPC froyo, but it never started flashing so I unplugged it from Odin and then tried to turn it back on. It goes to the normal "connect phone to computer" screen. However no attempts to get back into download mode have worked. Holding both volume buttons and power until second black screen doesn't work, booting while holding volume down doesn't work, holding both volume buttons and then inserting USB cable doesn't work. I think I'm stuck in this screen unless there's some incredible way I have yet to try. Anybody have any ideas? I would greatly appreciate feedback from the experienced users (Zilch25, designgears, kaik, reaver117), because I think I'd be pushing it trying to get it replaced a second time in such rapid succession
To flashman2002:
I put it in this section because it's in the development section that most flashing and such occurs so I thought there would be the greatest knowledge base. And yes I've pored over the one click thread and none of the methods mentioned there have any effect!
Jeez, I just scared the **** out of myself. I ran the remove lagfix script and it rebooted my phone but it was just a black screen. So I take the battery out. Bad Idea. It showed the ATT screen but just black after that. I could get it into recovery mode but not download. Then I messed some more and would only show a vague disconnected pic.
Finally I got it into download by doing this: (had odin open before hand)
1. took everything out including sim and usb cable.
2. quickly inserted battery and held volume buttons and very quickly inserted usb.
I'm pretty sure its the speed that matters because I tried about 4 times and only when I did it really fast did it work.

Nope. Unless you can do this with godly speed I dont think it'll work. I just got to the "Connect Phone to Computer" screen again.

Yeah originally. I can get to that screen now by just putting the battery in and holding power button. It seems to behave exactly like it normally would, just can't get out of it.
What screen? The screen you want has a big yellow triangle and says download.

No it's on the phone...!...computer screen. That's what I'm saying, it's been stuck here for a while and none of the methods described on the one click thread work. I've been here before and just holding volume buttons and holding down power for it to boot twice and releasing would do it. Not so anymore. Can't get into download mode doing anything!
Well I read In the SRE thread I think that there are reports of newer phones not responding to any button combos. Bad batch they said not on purpose...
Also for the i9000 apparently you only have to hold the down volume key so since you flashed a i9000 rom try that if you haven't already.
You cant get into recovery right? Just holding volume and power then letting go of power after a bit?

Nope none of it works. I just got it replaced less then 3 hours ago and I already bricked it. I hope somebody finds out something that'll get this fixed. Maybe some way to force download mode through a computer application or something.
Well theres adb like mentioned above but im pretty sure that requires at least recovery mode working.
Like i said before i was stuck on the same screen so maybe theres still hope.
If all else fails someone will figure out how to JTAG these things eventually...

I know it doesn't help you out now, but when you remove the lag fix, just leave it set on the black screen. It's doing its thing. It will reboot when it's done. The home keys should still light up if you press them in this state...
Well thanks for your input anyway guys. Hopefully somebody figures something out. For now I guess I'll keep the SIM in my old iPhone 3G so I at least have a phone. Tomorrow I'll go to another ATT store in my area. Chances are the rep won't know what the hell that screen means and will replace the phone promptly.
Hey Guys I really need your help my N1 won't power on for some reason. I really need to get some things off the phone from certain software that I had in case I have to have it repaired or sent away. I'll try to be brief what happened I was exercising with my phone inside a protective case that covers the whole phone and I went to change the next song while listening to music and when i went to push the power button the screen remained black the whole time and I couldn't see anything at all the screen was black the whole time after numerous attempts at pushing the power button. So I held down the power button to try and reboot it and then the music stopped, so then I hit the power button again to turn it on and it hasn't turned on since yesterday. I even took the battery out and let it chill for a min and still doesn't work. when I plug it in to the charger the orange/green light comes on and as well with the USB connection too, but still can get it to power on.
Anyone have any Idea what it could be? I am assuming it's the power button but I am not for sure. Is there anyway to turn it on again in case i need to recover any files, etc. the reason i want to get it to work is that I don't want to have to go through the hassle of sending it away to be repaired if there is some way I can do it myself. I am trying to avoid sending it away with my carrier and I really need to access certain files on the phone if all else fails. If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it thnx to anyone.
If it's a power button failure, you can put the phone on charge, then remove and reinsert the battery... keep trying, it will turn on eventually...

it worked the first time I did it thank you so much well just in case it ever happens again how can I back up some things on my apps for example I have notes on AK notepad how would I back those up? and if I wanted to move some software to my sd card that doesn't allow it?
Hey thanks again you are a life saver!!!!!!!!
oh darn the X came up when I powered it up but still nothing just a black screen I got all excited for nothing
i got after 5 or so times of taking the battery out thnx again is there a way or software to make the N1 awake or power off with the trackball without rooting it since the power switch is buggy now?
Titanium Backup will backup apps and data to SD card.
Widget Locker has an option for trackball wake.
LockEnabler will let you turn screen off/sleep.
Quick Boot will let you reboot, boot into recovery etc. Be careful booting into recovery or boot loader, because power button is used to navigate (you have to use adb).

thnx again is there anyway to restart/reboot the phone if it is not rooted via trackball or another button?
Reboot is possible with Quick Boot (as noted above), but if you ever turn off then the battery toggle is your only option...

ok so i was looking around the internet for the honeycomb update and i was like ok i found it and download it to the streak 7 and install it, let it do its thing. well it didnt work like i thought so i restarted the tab and now im stuck in clockworkmod recovery version 3.0.2.0. i need help on how to get out of it so i can use the tab again like it was or if its not to complicated, put honeycomb on it. i dont really know what im doing i did root the tablet but am confused on what to do now. any help would be nice, i am a noob lol
well ive searched and tryed to understand what people have done but nothing has helped me yet, please sombody must know something
Be more specific
What instructions did you follow?

well i tried booting into fastboot but it wont do that, when you hold down the volume rocker it just brings me back to the cwm recovery, i didnt download cwm it came on when i installed the update ive tryed to reboot recovery thinking it would fix itself but no matter what you do it comes back to cwm recovery. Im thinking the update deleted the original os or something. ive read the thread " how to restore your ds7" and cant do anything because the files arn't valid anymore. I did what i though was a root of the tablet to get rid of the cell stand by and after i did it unrooted it because it ran bad and wasn't sure why. I can kindof follow the instructions but still dont really understand what to do. i am still under dell warrenty and have had the ds7 for 3 months and more then half ive had problems with the unit, other then this so im gonna see if they can do anything on the unit. I cant even bring it back to where i bought it because they dont sell it anymore. let me know if theres anything that you think i can try doing to get in the right direction
thanks...
It may not work out for you so well to bring the DS7 back - I believe rooting will void your warranty.
Fastboot is a part of the firmware of the device, so you should be able to enter fastboot mode, if you are able to enter recovery.
If you are holding the DS7 in landscape mode, the softkeys (Back, Menu & Home) will be on the right-hand side of the device, in the order I gave, from top to bottom.
On the top of the device, on the right-hand side are the volume rocker and the power button. The left-hand side of the volume rocker is "up" and the right-hand side is "down."
With the DS7 powered off (and charged to at least 60%), unplugged from the charger cable and not connected to a PC, press the Volume rocker DOWN and hold. Then press the power button and hold, making sure not to release the volume rocker. Hold both buttons until a screen appears with red writing on it.
You are now in Fastboot mode and can connect the DS7 to your computer with the USB charger cable.
Good luck with the rest.

Fastboot reboot
Then it would boot
well the lights are stuck on at the moment ill see what happens if i reset it but i think something else got messed up with it anyway, will see what happens with dell id like them to be able to fix it even if i have to pay some but will see, ill try this and go from there thanks..

I am having the EXACT same issue as what he is describing. I just tried what you suggested above and it just goes back into CMR. There seems to be no way at all to get back into the original recovery. I've read multiple posts describing how to reload the original img files, but all of the links they give for the files are dead. Please help!

I am in the exact same place. Did you ever get this fixed?
Have you tried flashing back to froyo then if it still reboots to recovery enter this with adb with ds7 connected to computer
Adb shell
Then typed system/enter-fastboot
Dell then rebooted to fastboot then I typed
Fastboot reboot
well i ended up calling dell and sending it back to them to get fixed. I am still under warrenty, so i figured id give it a shot. I shipped it out on 12/30/11 friday afternoon and it was shipped to houston texas from here in connecticut. it took a day to get there and i got a call on 1/3/12 saying that my package has arrived at fedex for pickup. Wow dell that was really fast, they said 2 to 3 weeks before id see anything. So i opened the box and behold a brand new streak 7. This one works super awesome compared to the other one and better yet i just updated it to honeycomb 3.2 so im very happy with it now. they just threw the old one out and said "screw it give him a new one". I didnt even pay a penny for my new one they covered everything, will see what happens, im going to do a video on youtube now with it. Hope everyone gets there problems straighten out
Hi everyone
I hope you can assist.
I have a stock HTC One X that I have been thinking of installing a custom ROM on but never got around to it.
Two days ago, after I had it plugged into a car charger, it started to act strangely. It would take really long to wake from hibernate. Then after a while the screen would go blank, though the LED on top would still blink. After leaving it charging overnight, it then stopped restarting all together. Now it won't restart even after a hard reset.
When I plug it in via USB, it is detected and I can view the contents of my phone via my computer.
It still will not restart. When I hold down the power key, the three buttons at the bottom flash, the phone vibrates but does not restart.
I can't seem to get into the boot loader either. The screen does not come on, holding down the power and the volume down key does not give me the bootloader menu.
At the moment, my thoughts are:
1. It is possible a hardware problem and the screen is faulty?
2. It is a software problem and re-installing either stock or a custom ROM will fix it.
Please let me know what you think and how best to resolve this.
If I send this to my carrier, I have to wait 4-6 weeks for resolution.
Thanks
Phil

I am not sure. Is there any way to check this?
At the moment, the phone is plugged in, LED is green (I think indicating it is fully charged), bottom 3 buttons are lit.
Other than that, when I hold down the power key, the bottom three lights blink, but no other response.
When I installed ADB and checked using ADB devices, it reported seeing a device.
Right now, when I press the power button, the bottom three lights switch on and off, almost like its waking up. Seems like this could be a screen issue. But I am not sure.

Factory reset and/or reflash firmware with rsd lite
If device is not rooted factory reset should work.
Or
There are some apps like lightflow that may help

I dont know what happened with my phone, i think that in a reboot it entered to safestrap or other option and doesn't boot.
When I press vol keys, my D4 vibrates.

I can't see the device via ADB.
PD: Fortunately, previously I made a backup of memory (8 GB) ... but I wanted made a full backup with safestrap D:

Your LCD or flex cable likely failed, fairly common with slide out droids
both can be replaced
you need to unlock you screen to see data on drives
Likely the Digitizer is still working, just need to guess where the unlock is
