So, for me, the LG keyboard on this phone was pretty annoying from time to time, ignoring keystrokes, the auto-correct was terrible, words not in the dictionary needed to be added from the settings, and I just wasn't used to it. Installed gIMpSTa's HTC_IME mod and could not be happier!

You can pretty much make the kb whatever colors you like, add your own background, just make this phone more "you" Not sure if people know about it or not, but definitely worth checkin' out.
I used v27-froyo high res.
Thanks I like this keyboard much better
Also, through the settings, u cn set the volume keys to scroll left/right while entering/editing text which I find awesome and extremely useful on this phone never thought I would miss the trackpad on the incredible but I do. Haha

I just use Swype.
I agree that the stock keyboard sucks. I like swift Key X beta, but have tried Gingerbread Keyboard, but really like Go Keyboard.
I paid for Perfect Keyboard after trying basically everything out there, and have stuck with it. I ran with Hacker's Keyboard for a long time (it's AMAZING), but the landscape mode in Hacker's Keyboard I couldn't deal with any more. I wanted a regular keyboard in landscape mode and Hacker's keyboard in portrait mode. I couldn't achieve that with Hacker's, tried basically everything in the market, found Perfect and it does the job (for me). Might not be your thing, but give it a go. I'd HIGHLY recommend Hacker's Keyboard (especially if you do a lot of ssh'ing from the phone) and I think its free too

Ditto. I bought Better KB way back and really like it too.
I never understand why reviews make such a big deal about the stock KB. It's seriously the easiest thing to customize on your phone aside from maybe the background.

I really miss the previous On-Screen Keyboards as used in the Hermes Black Roms or Schaps, the ones with numeric keys along the top.
I searched for a OS Keyboard cab, found the perfect "skins" in Schaps thread but it killed the keyboard function entirely. I had to un-install and cold reset to restore it.
I was able to install JJ's Black Shadow Dialer cabs onto my Kaiser which work fine. (I'm using the std Non-Video dialer as I don't have video calling here).
I figure that if the dialer can be replaced with a cab that it should be even easier to have a replacement On-Screen Keyboard Cab.
Is this possible? Man I wish I was a programmer!
I put resco keyboard pro on mine and it works fine. You're right, that keyboard they have one there now sux, especially if you use it to write SMS's or anything else that you would use both text and numbers in.
To get numbers at the top just go to options and change keys from large to small
Oh Man what a knuckle head! One little setting, Thanks ID64! and you too xeno1, I'll check out keyboard pro as well.
I love this place!
if you like some skins for the keyboard, try thses, I have signed them, and they work on my Kaiser very well

Yeah. As a noob I quite appreciate the free flow of info and help here.
I had seen the 'Large' and 'Small' options but had misinterpreted them as if the tiny little boxes for keys would get even tinier.
Thanks. That is so much better than constantly switching back and forth from numbers to letters!!
If you want an extremely impressive alternative, then try this: http://www.pocketcm.com/keyboard.php
It's in beta/trial at the moment, but it's a million times better for one-handed thumb-typing while you're on the move...
It's great, I asked for a black keyboard, now I have several skins, Resco's Pro, and PocketCM which is completely awesome.
Add-on Sleuth's app "Sipchange" to be able to pick your normal default keyboard choice and have it stick thru resets and life is GOOD!

I really like the new keyboard as keys are bigger. Much easier to use your bare hand to type. No need for a stylus anymore...
Sure that the numeric keypad is on another keyboard is sometime annoying but overall, th ability to use your finger is heaps better.

Hey guys,
I was wondering if anyone else really liked the new stock IME included in Froyo.
I tried swype, SwiftKeys and the Htc IME, but I just keep coming back to the stock froyo keyboard.
With the new two rows of pop-up keys and the ease of switching languages, I find it to be the easiest to use. Definitely more intelligent than the iPhone keyboard.
Only problem I have when compared to typing on the iPhone is that it will miss keys if I type too fast, but all the ime I've tried do that. It's likely more of a touchscreen issue there.
Just curious if other people were enjoying it as well.
The one problem I have is the fact that it doesn't support the Canadian French keyboard layout. Typing in azerty is just terrible! Lots of bug reports in to Google on that point, but no movement yet.
if swype didn't cut it I really don't know what will, smart keyboard is really good and fast try it if you haven't already.
and to answer your question, I honestly loath it. but you see that's the beauty of android, if you don't like anything just change it lol.
I keep coming back to it also, does exactly what I want it too and is easy to use, used swype on my old windows mobile phone but see no need for it here. the text predicition means I rarely type near the full word.
In portrait mode I use swype, while in landscape mode I use the stock keyboard. Does anyone know any light half-qwerty keyboard for portrait use? I tried HTC_IME but it had that little bug that wouldn't register the word "IF". I wonder if it still exists in the latest version. Also is there an original HTC_IME lying around somewhere? I want something light and not as heavy as the modded one.
Tried Swype once.. not for me.
Been on stock ever since coz it's allright...
I can't get away from the HTC IME keyboard cause it has T9 standard keypad, and I'm just so much faster typing on that.
Tried Swype a while ago. But since FroYo I've been very happy with stock...Especially in landscape.

I like it. I use HTC ime too but I use stock alot. The reason you're more accurate on iPhone is probably because of its genius unseen system whereby it predicts the next letter you're going to type and resizes all of the keys' pressable areas based on the odds they will be selected. The greater the odds the bigger the pressing area. If the stock android KB implemented that it would be perfect. Thick keys is similar but not very good so I'm guessing there might not be a copyright issue. I know android indicated its awareness that the android kb needs a lot of work so maybe gingerbread will bring some enhancements...
Hiho, i've searched already if i can find a thread like this, but i didn't.
So for my and maybe your interest, which Keyboard do you use?
Samsung, Gingerbread, Swype?
Thanks
p.s. the version depends on the choseable keyboards, because on below 2.3 you dont have Gingerbread Keyboard...
SlideIT on 2.3.3
Since getting my SGS, always used Swype. Tried using the GB keyboard but just keep going back to Swype.
I don't use any of the above mentioned keyboards. I use Better Keyboard 8.
I use the Samsung keyboard that's enough for me
Gingerbread keyboard is available for 2.2

I also vote for swype.
I like the suggestions from the gingerbread keyboard though, the swype suggestions dialog is really obstrusive, that's the only thing I've got against it.
But I keep going back to swype since it predicts what I want to write with great accuracy and I end up writing a lot faster with it.
BTW my main language is spanish, and it works like a charm with it.
Swype all the way. Haven't even tried any other keyboard yet.
It's so convinient
Swype 2.3+ , i get annoyed when i flash roms and the samsung kb is there.
can't beat swype i reckon, using a normal touch keyboard to press every single button is so tedious now and swype is way faster once u get used to it
Smart Keyboard Pro with personnal skin
I'm in love with swype, it's the best keyboard I've ever used. One thing I didn't like with it, it saves every entry I tap, other than this I'm so happy with it

i thought samsung keyboard is really fast but ill test swype now too... this popup often bothered me in typing very quick, but maybe after learning many words it'll be quick
thx to all =)
I use swype. Nothing quite as satisfying as swyping out your whole email address in less than a second
It's also great for making sure nosy people can't peak at your passwords when you have trail off.
Hey Guys,
Can anyone tell me how can I get the swype to work on the X8, i've installed it and it runs, i select to use the keyboard BUT when it shows up and I swipe it seems to be off by a lot on the swype, like if the keys werent calibrated and adjusted to the screen swypes. Any idea on how i can get this wonderfull app running on the X8, since I had it on my Nokia 5800 this was the fastest way to text, now I can't handle the keyboard either htc nor android live up to the swyping technique!
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for the advice, I downloaded and tried this one BUT after I restarted the phone and I select the typing area the keyboard won't come up, I have to select the Android or HTC one again, I un-installed it and installed again but the keyboard swiping doesn't really work quite the same as SWYPE because it kinda releases the motion in the middle of a slide. I will try GO keyboard now just cause I rather swyping than typing.
I've used HTC IME for ages on my phones and haven't found a keyboard I like better. But I can't get it to work properly on my Nook Color. I tried both the high and low resolution version, but both are too small and don't fill up the side to side when you use it in portrait mode.
Anybody that knows how to get HTC IME to work properly on the nook?
HTC IME

I too liked the HTC IME until I tried, well, several different keyboards.... It's really not that good, just better than stock 2.1.
Each keyboard I tried was incrementally better. Swiftkey X is my current favourite keyboard, been using it for about 6 months now.
For tap type keyboards I can't really grow to like any but the HTC keyboard on my EVO, but I'm a Swype person. For my Nook I chose to use Thumb Keyboard because I can choose how best to use all this screen real estate.
Sorry I don't have an actual solution to your issue.
edit: I just happened to discover the HTC keyboard that comes with 3.5 has a Swype like function I am perfectly ok with this.

I'm actually using swiftkey now, and I was surprised how similar it is to to HTC IME. But I still miss how you could customize HTC IME however you wanted. On swiftkey for example, it annoys me to no end that you can't use landscape without ending up in a fullscreen window(you don't see the UI of the browser of whatever app you're in, but just a white screen). In HTC IME you could change that setting.

I never had a HTC phone, but if the keyboards are as good as HTC IME(I guess it's based on some HTC keyboard...) then they must be good. Thumb keyboard looked interesting.
Although there is a similar setting in swiftkey if you have the tablet version.
