Windows 7 Repair - Off-topic

Hey guys. I'm pretty good with computers, and I'm stumped, I was hoping some of you XDA geniuses could help me out.
I recently tried to download the Duke Nukem Forever demo, which turned out to be virus-ridden. I was so excited to play that I didn't run a virus scan on it (I know, noob mistake) before trying to install. Within 10 seconds, AVG was like "o****", and I was greeted with the splash screen of my motherboard.
Windows Startup Repair didn't help me (go figure), and I would be that guy that doesn't make recovery images for his PC.
My question to all of you is, is there a way to make an actual legit repair dvd for Windows? I'm not talking about Microsoft's Windows Repair disk (which just launches the same things that Windows does when **** hits the fan). I'm looking for a way to take my Windows installation disk, and overwrite Windows with a fresh install like one would if upgrading from Vista to 7 by using the DVD (except from the Windows boot menu/DVD, since I am unable to enter Windows at all.
I just want to be able to get into my drive and backup my bookmarks and save games (all my other stuff is on a separate partition).
My only other option is to hook up a spare HDD and use my drive as a slave, virus scan it, and move my files from there, but I'd like to avoid ripping my PC apart for the moment.
Please, no "you should have installed Mac/Linux/whatever comments". Thank you for your help.

If you have a CD that you use to install Windows 7 you can boot from CD using the boot menu and do a completely new installation from there. I may be reading what you are asking incorrectly but that's what I did when I accidently screwed up my computer and couldn't boot any OS.
-Remember, Android hell is a real place and you will be sent there at the first sign of defiance-

Yeah, that's not what I'm asking haha. I'm looking for a way to overwrite my current copy of Windows (to fix the corrupted files and save the files on my C: drive so I can extract my important files) without reformatting and installing a completely fresh copy of Windows. And I need to be able to do this without having to go into Windows (because I can't lol).
Sent from my Synergized Evo.

If you make a new installation there will be a folder called windows old, or something like that. All your files will be in there.
-Remember, Android hell is a real place and you will be sent there at the first sign of defiance-

Oh, really? Are you certain? And can anyone else verify this (Not saying you're unreliable man, just wanna be certain lol)?

You can do a 'Repair' install from the Recovery menu. Just boot from your Win 7 disk to select it. If you have System restore turned on you might want to try that first, from the same menu.

I don't see repair, only startup repair.

Repair may not be the best option anyway as it'll only fix system files, perhaps leaving the malware intact. System Restore is the better option. Failing that, grab yourself a copy of malwarebytes from another PC, put it on a memory stick and run it from safe mode on the infected PC.
Microsoft have also released a malware scanner that can be run off a memory stick. You'd need another PC and a spare memory stick to use it. It's basically a copy of security essentials but the process makes the memory stick bootable so it can be run on an infected machine outside of the Windows environment.
Hang on, i'll find a link...
https://connect.microsoft.com/systemsweeper
There you go.
For future reference you can create a repair disc for Win 7 by simply typing 'system repair disc' in the start menu.

Try Hirens boot CD. Live CD with mini XP and antivirus apps and many things more. Its really handy live CD for repair.
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA Premium App

You can nearly extract everything out of an old windows installation. Bookmarks are in json files if i remember correctly, and you can also open the old registry file (google a bit).
I think its not worth go through all the trouble to make your system start again, i would rather try to just install new and get everything i need from the old files.

So basically most of you agree I should install windows without reformatting do I can get my files from the C: drive lol
Sent from my Synergized Evo.

try using hirens boot disc
it has an live windows xp so you can check for viruses from there, also you can run several other tools.

Will do. Right now I'm trying the Microsoft System Sweeper.
Sent from my Synergized Evo.

Another one for Hiren's Boot CD. YOu get the Mini XP, which just boots up into a watered down version of XP, but when you go into My Computer, all your files will be there. Also I know it has some tools running from MiniXP, but you can a lot of stuff when booting into the liveCD.

Alright lol. Sounds good. Still running Microsoft System Sweeper, but when that's done I'll try it.

Windows Directory

Is there any way to view/edit the contents of the Windows directory on my AT&T Tilt from a PC? I want to customize the shortcuts/folders/startup programs and the only way to even see the Windows directory is on the phone itself, which is extremely tedious. The Windows directory does not show up in Windows Explorer, ActiveSync or other 3rd party software I have tried that contain file browsers. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks!
I must be misunderstanding what your asking because...
If you are using Activesync, you most certainly can browes files on your phone as you would the files on your desktop. Two ways to get there. Either by:
My Computer \ Mobile Device
Or through the Activesync program and clicking on the Explore icon.
You also may want to make sure you have your view settings to where hidden files can be seen.
I can see all folders/files except for the Windows Directory from my PC. Nothing is set to hidden.

I'm guessing that you're using Vista....you need to go to your folder options in Vista (Organize->Folder and Search Options->View) and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Tried on another machine (both running XP) and it's fine. Settings are the same on both. Could it be something with permissions? Thank for your replies.
With active synch up, click explore
Now click My Window Mobile-Based Device
Windows folder should be there along with your storage card
If it isn't, your device is probably possessed by the devil and you should consider an exorcism
Yep - works that way on one machine but not the other.
Oh, and your mother sucks c**ks in Hell, Karras, you faithless slime...
Found the problem. Had contracted a root kit virus some time ago on my other machine. Was able to clean everyhing, but one of the wonderful features of this virus was to delete the
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden" key.
Sneaky bastards...
I restored it from the good machine and everything is all good now.
Thanks again for everyone's time.
I guess Smuook was right, possessed by the devil.

installing unbutu on my laptop ?

If I install unbuto on my computer will I still have access to files allready on hard drive? Is is able to use my wifi etc.?
wifi should work, with jaunty. as for the files i believe anything but what is in itunes u can import. good luck!
I have a sneaking suspicion that you might want to first learn how to spell your chosen distro's name before attempting to make the leap from Windows to Linux.

What does this have to do with the HTC Dream/TMobile G1 devices?
I have to agree that on first look, it does appear that the G1 is unrelated to ubuntu and linux...
However...after getting a G1 with it's open source OS and no longer needing the horrible mess that is activesync, I too have moved to open source on my desktop (well, laptop...) - I tried ubuntu but switched to Mint (which is based on ubuntu but I prefer it).
Android is so easy going that it'll work with any operating system and is one of the first phones I've had where it is an easy fit. I've even managed to sort out music syncing similar to itunes or Winamp for android and I'm well happy.
I very rarely boot into my windows partition any more and that is thanks to android.
As regards the question about accessing your files, yes, most of them will be compatible with linux equivalents but back everything up before you install it - in most cases, putting it on will require at the least, some messing with partitions on your disk which is inherently risky, and at worst, a total re-format.
I keep my windows around for games (C&C!!!) and very little else nowadays and am more than happy with linux.
So's my phone ;-)
if youre on vista it is a b*ich to partition since it takes up space it is not even using, but yea you should be able to keep youre files

[Q] Htc Hd7 as a USB drive.... Now What?

I managed to follow the instructions found at knowyourcell.com about turning your HD7 into a USB drive... It will open and read as a drive, but I can't transfer or read anything... Help would be appreciated. I am a noob so please take it easy on me.... What now? How can I open it up?
Instructions:
1. Open Windows Registry Editor by typing regedit in your start menu
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB
3. Perform a search for ZuneDriver
1. The search should yield a result similar to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\VID_045E&PID_04EC&MI_00\6&27ffd631&0&0000\Device Parameters\WUDF
4. Click up one level to the Device Parameters key
5. Change ShowInShell from 0 to 1
6. Change PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell from 1 to 0
7. Change EnableLegacySupport from 0 to 1
8. Change EnableDefaultAutoPlaySupport
Thats what i saw in my Explorer.
Tried to cpy a mp3 file into Music, that did not work.
After a restart of hd7 i came only to the level Storage - no sub folders are visable any more now.
And even with my first attempt i had now folder for movies. May be as i do not have any movie in devices storage?
Now everything works fine.
It did'nt work, as there was a filtransfer by zune on his way to the phone. And even killing zune on pc blocked the storage card.
-So edit the registry as mentioned above
-connect your hd7 via usb to pc
-zune starts now
-kill all zune transfer processes
-kill zune
-go to your windows explorer
-you can copy and past media files now.
unfortunaly the office hub is not visable by this procedure.
But i think we are not far away do find out in very near future.
nice! thanks for this. it works.
Sweet!! Got it to work!! Thanks for the help HUMS... Now what? Is there any way to mod up a Ringtone folder? I tried putting in a WMA ringtone and added the folder but no dice... Any suggestions?
great. it works... thanx!

sorry m8 - no idea.
For the moment only copy and paste available for media data.
As every program has its own hub.
Hi all, I'm getting a little frustrated with my HTC HD7. I installed Zune, but it wouldn't recognize my phone (it keeps saying "connect device") and I changed the registry as mentioned above also but whenever I plug the phone in, nothing happens and it changed all the registry values back to what it was before. Also the computer keeps failing to install the phone. Anyone with any helpful info help please? thanks.

Yes I have; I have 6 USB ports and tried all of them. My wife's iphone and my HTC HD2 connects perfectly to the computer. When I plug in the HD7 however, it takes a charge, and windows will try to install it, then says "installation failed" and thats it. I wonder if its problem with vista, with everyone that is successful at connecting their devices, anyone on vista?

OK. Lets split it to two issues:
1. you want to copy media files (Music, video, photos) to and from your phone
Use mouse and drag and drop what you want to sync with your phone. Its so simple.
2. you want to copy any other types of files to and from your phone
Its pointless, because files will NOT be vissible to WP7 and if you want to move files from A to B, than use what is more appropriate and designed for this purpose, like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_flash_drive#Uses

I wanted to try this method because zune was in no way connecting to my hd7. I found the problem though. its my operating system. i plugged it into my laptop running windows 7 and it connected perfectly.
Did the required registry edits but unable to view any folders inside the Storage device on the computer, both computer & zune detects the phone though. Need to transfer a .cab file for installation of Satguide.
Would be great, except for the fact that wp7 doesn't use .cab files, only .xap files.

Transfering .pdf files over to the HD7

I've been tearing my hair out wondering how the heck am i gonna do this. Syncing via bluetooth through my laptop doesn't work (says hd7 wont accept file transfers) I tried uploading to gigasize.com, no luck, and I've tried emailing, but there's n email system big enough.
Anyone have ANY idea how i can transfer random files over for the HTC HD7?
SkyDrive is an option. Cloud-based storage free with your Live account (hotmail, msn, live)
This link will help with that.
http://social.answers.microsoft.com...7/thread/56adcec6-08ce-4d86-aa67-27dda1433fa0
thank you, I will give it a try! much appreciated
didn't end up working, the file i have is 100MB, the limited space on skydrive is 50MB =[ close but no dice, are there any other altenatives? can i bluetooth from one phone to the other?
My SkyDrive Account has 25 gigs?
I pay no money.
Ahhh. Individual file limit of 50megs.
yeah..... i MIGHT MIGHT have to truncate my class textbook into two halves =[
Okay I figured it out halfway if anyone is interested, I've used the site http://www.bonpoo.com/ ..... there you can upload it and email the link to your hotmail for your HD7.... then you can download it via browser, i just don't know how to KEEP it on the HD7 =[
This works on HTC HD7 have not tried on other devices
What we want to do
Read .pdf files on WP7 Device, without emailing them to yourself.
What you will Need
- Chevron Unlocked Hd7
If its not check this or the ultimate solution that worked for me this last Entry on this page quoted by me. At the same time make sure you Apply this to prevent it from relocking
- TouchExplorer installed on the Device.
If you don't have it get it from here
- Registry key on your Desktop to Enable Mass Storage.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/11/29/how-to-enable-usb-storage-on-windows-phone-7/
- Zune installed on Desktop
- .pdf files which you want to read on WP7
How to do it
1. Connect your Phone to Desktop using USB Cable.
2. Zune Starts and Sync Completes.
3. Close Zune.
4. Copy your .pdf files to the root of Storage (MyComputer\HD7\Storage)
5. Disconnect Phone from Desktop.
6. Start TouchExplorer on Device.
7. Go to "My Device/My Documents/Zune/Content/0400/01 or 02"
8. Here you will find your .pdf files with the name of 8.z or something .z extension.
9. Rename them to YourFileName.pdf.
10. Now Copy them to "My Device/Applications/Data/BC4F319A-____-____-____-____________/Data/IsolatedStorage.
11. Exit TouchExplorer.
12. Run Adobe Reader, and find your Pdfs listed there.
Hope it helps everyone here. Best of Luck and let me know if you face any issue.

Phone's unlocked and everything's working.... I ran into one problem though, when I transfer files over, it says "cannot copy (file name) "the device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected"
any way you can help me figure this out?

Hi!
Try to set you screen lock to never:
Settings -> lock & wallpaper -> Screen time-out: never
Than try again the steps described in post #9.
After finished set back screen lock time-out to original value to preserve battery power.
Regards,
Cina.
Doesn't seem to work, but thank you for the insight =] I really appreciate everyone's help but i think i've come to terms with just simply giving up.... I'm reinstalling windows 7 and XP so i might jump back up and try it once more
You can try to e-mail the files to yourself or you can try other online storage services
Although the methods previously suggested might work, and they do with several limitations, I wouldn't advise them as they will either leave your files lost in the middle of hundreds of e-mails or pile your office hub in a completely unorganized fashion.
My solution is much better; simply create OneNote notebooks, organized anyway you see fit, insert your files and sync them to SkyDrive.
When you sync them with your WP phone you will have your pdf files organized and always available.
Never tried this method with any file larger than 50Mb but with smaller ones works like a charm
Cheers

Okayyyy, I have used Linux Mint for a while now on my personal laptop, but, i went ahead and set up my desktop (which my grandparents also use) to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu on two seperate HDDs, but since my grandparents use it, I need the OS choice screen to have Windows 7 at the top so in a certain amount of seconds it automatically boots that so my grandparents don't get their panties in a bunce when it automatically boots Ubuntu, lmao, how exactly would i go about doing this? thank you

and also, on the connection icon, there is a black bar? and input? (i included the screenie)
to me win 7 is the 1st choice when i boot up. if i press down it selects ubuntu. i'm not sure if it's the same with you.
Found it in Google in like 2 seconds...
I can't imagine why you'd ever want to do such a thing, but if you must, edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst:
Code:
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
and change the order of the entries at the bottom of the file. The topmost entry is the default boot.

Pressing the Esc-key at the BIOS Logo-screen on my Eee PC netbook. will halt the boot from the primary boot disk and opening a screen for selecting a another boot drive (be it a CD-rom, HDD, USB-stick or a memory card).
My video player, a Nettop from ASUS with a Atom/ION motherboard pressing the F8-key (also when the boot screen is shown) will give you the same choices.
There might also be some helpful BIOS settings, in the BIOS Boot section.
Check your computer's/Motherboard's manual (There should be at least a downloadable PDF)
i know it's not in the BIOS, lol, it's just a little nit pick for me, i know it is possible to edit it in the grub, but i do not know how =[ lol

However, if you are using a cracked windows, this will affect your crack and make windows "not genuine".

if you read carfully, this will make the pc boot into ubuntu and the windows boot menu (which is usless).
I used this method when I was sick of the bootloader editor f***ing my crack *whistle*, but if you want to boot from the boot menu you need to remove ubuntu from the boot loader, disconnect the windows harddisk and install ubuntu on the other hard disk.
Did I write that??
