App to make apps widgets? - Xoom Themes and Apps

Now that I have had my xoom a while I was wondering if there was any way to run apps on your home screen like a widget. I have a few apps that show up small when ran, like dice bag, and it would be great to run it.as a widget.

It's not possible without modifying the Android framework extensively.
Even then, converting everything to a RemoteView would be... prohibitively complex.

Well that figures, thanks for the help.

something like desktop visualizer would do what your looking for I think.

Not quite, I am looking for something that would actually run the whole app as a widget.

LIke a windowed OS I guess? I would be very interested in the same thing, I just don't think it's possible with 3.1 atm.

Market Pipe

I love it. Can get rid of unwanted publishers from your list. Just wish I knew how to get rid of more than one publisher
Add a pipe character ("Alt+S" on the G1, or "?123" + "ALT" + "|" on the default virtual keyboard. You should have something like this: "IndiaNIC|Netmite" (without the quotes).
Thanks! No more top sexy lady apps, themes or dictionary apps for me
Now if only it was a regular application and not a crappy widget.
Wow, pretty harsh...
It's a damn good widget. If you want a application for this then just use the market. Honestly, there is a difference between being a complete **** and constructive criticism.

I think their point was why have an app running all the time when you only need to have it running when you are accessing the market.

Correct me if i'm wrong but isn't it truly just running when we set it to update the widget? Or is it constantly running in the background even if it isn't accessing any data and using up precious battery life? I have alot of widgets installed and it doesn't slow my phone down or drain my battery any faster so I was under the impression it didn't always use up resources. Maybe i'm wrong

Every app or widget that is running is using up some resources how much depends on what the function of the app/widget and how well programmed it is and any limitations because of being coded in Java.
At the very least it'll be using up ram since most people don't have swap files, nor should they for various reasons.

Thanks for the clarification
This widget does not use any resources other than some of your memory just like any other app. When you have it set up as an active widget, it uses resources when it checks for new apps. This is no different than any other app that polls for updates. As soon as it finishes fetching data, it shuts itself down. The bulk of the work is done by on the server so really the widget really does very little to use the phones resources. If you have it set to update every 5 minutes and get 100 apps, you might drain your battery pretty quickly.

Yea I think it was pulled. It wasn't working yesterday, so maybe that was why. I wiped my phone and I couldn't re-download the app. Guess it's gone.

what is the widget really missing ? (your ideas needed !)

Hello,
After 'Pure calendar' and 'Weather forecast', I am ready to create a new widget.
But I don't have any idea of 'WHAT'.
What widget really miss you ?
Conditions :
- it should NOT exist on market.
- I should be able to sell it on the market (can't sell small widget, like memory, or pictures)
- it will be free during beta testing, paid after
- winning idea will have widget for free
Winning ideas :
+++ messaging widget (gmail + SMS + email)
+++ bookmark widget with sync with mobile browser & xmarks
Remaing ideas :
++ task widget
+ dock to put more app icons into one cell
+ dialer widget
+ photo galery with flicker integration
+ power control widget
+ stock market
Ideas not developed :
- email/SMS/MMS widget >>> problem, there is no gmail API ! >>> solution found !!!!!!!!
Some kind of system montior widget would be great. ie, something that would show: CPU frequency, CPU load, swap usage, battery level, disk usage on fat + ext...
I don't know about other people, but I normally check this stuff from the terminal, so it would be nice to have a widget.

super social net widget
I would suggest an integrated Twitter/Facebook/GTalk(Jabber)/SMS-MMS widget where you can see everything in one location (maybe tab based or mixed with a label of some sort).
If tabbed, the number of new messages could be part of the tab label or added to the notification bar.
If everything shows in same window, then touching a message could either allow the user to respond or open the appropriate app.
Could be enhanced later with LinkedIn, Plaxo, etc. based on what people want.
Hummmm ... good idea an email widget.
Does it exist only on Hero now ?

Main problem with this are API.
Most API have restrictions for commercial uses... so, to use thoses API, you have to create your software as 'free'... This is not my goal.
I believe it does as I can't see it anywhere else
well it's not really a widget i'm missing. but a program to auto end and auto-start other programs at specific times would be great
so one could auto-end k-9 at 23:00, have a good night's sleep and have it autostart at 7:00 to read all the new mails...

I cant really think of anything that isnt in the market. but i know of a few things that i think are in the market, but can be done better...
personally, i liked the WM 6.2 screen where you had a scrolling "widget" that you could use to place direct call shortcuts... id love to see a android version of that...
the ones out there are ok, but they arent as clean looking as the WM take on it... from what ive seen of your work, you are the person that i think could create something like what im thinking of...
the one on the hero is fine, but, i even think its a bit clunky...

I would really like to have a dialer widget. I hate the default behavior that the green call button brings up the call log instead of the dialer. In fact, I would be quite happy if the built-in dialer could be made into a widget. I imagine it would take up an entire home screen but I'm fine with that.

fluent scrolling is impossible with current SDK. You have to simulate scrolling with buttons ... not very fun.

It is the real one. Just version 2.0 not 2.0.1, but if you play with the .lockbot folder on the sd you can do some neat stuff.
i mean't it'sn ot the real one cause it doesn't spin all the way, and whatnot. but i GUESSS i'll see what's good with this 1 until i get a real answer to this thread

luma alock is that the one?
What makes it so different from the last one mentioned?
lockbot is sweet, it actually spins. spin one way to unlock and spin the ohter way to silent/vibrate, just like eclair lockscreen. i like it. plus a lot of customizable options you can do like rearrange stuff, change out icons, etc all within the app itself. much better than lock2.0.
I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but popups from Handcent and SMS Popup no longer work while Lockbot is enabled.
It is pretty customizable. I did the lockscreen in my sig with it..

i have handcent and popups still works fine for me with lockbot enabled.
I guess it didn't work for me, because I have the popups set to be restricted. Once I put it on always allow, it works again. I actually went back to the Stericson Locksceen though and created a Metamorph to change the background whenever I want. Less problems and I don't have to have popups set to always allow (kind of annoying when I'm working on something).

These features cannot be added to Android?

Hello,
i am using lately MIUI, and i am impressed basically with 2 features that i wished it would 've been in Android. Is it so difficult to implement these on Android?
1. Seeing the drawer with all apps, being able to create and put apps in folders and knowing which apps are not in folders.
Is it so difficult for this to be implemented in the drawer? And if you have a folder in the drawer just to drag it onto the desktop? So many times i am frustrated because i've created over 50 times folders, and they have been deleted (by mistake or intentionally). But if they are always in the drawer, i would just drag them on the desktop.
2. Dragging icons on the dock.
Again is this something so difficult to implement?

it's a question to your launcher developers. stock does not have that. Other might. No big deal though unless you spend your whole day dragging icons to the dock.
If you think these are essential components of the os then write it and send the changes to google. If they think it's important they will add your patch to the next update. But don't hope lot cause as I know they accepted only a few patches in the last years

I am definitely sure that it might be applied to Android 2.5 or 5.1 or 9.3, that at some point people would have the ability to create folders in the app drawer in order to have their programs a bit more tide up, thus why delaying things?
And about the dragging, why not simplifying the things and use dragging, rather than clicking on it, then waiting for another menu to come up then clicking to go in another menu, until you find hte app you want...
MIUI for the moment rocks, i even tried with Launcher Pro as home app and is super fast!

Sense 6 - missing HTC Live Wallpaper (multiple pictures)

Hi all I have just upgraded to Sense 6 and it seems HTC have removed the live wallpaper that lets you select multiple pictures from the gallery. I loved that wallpaper, is anyone else seeing the same or could someone upload the wallpaper I am referring to?
Thanks.
Yes, it's not there. I still have the old 5.5 ROM backup tough (I used it to restore old Notification sounds) so if you can tell me the name, I can upload it for you.

It is called HTCImageWallpaper.apk - unfortunately it does not work with Sense 6. Probably missing some other resources, so it needs porting.
But just in case, there is the .apk - it can not be installed, bust be placed manually to /system/priv-app

What features did the HTC one have that put it in such high favor? I've been looking for a good slideshow WP app for a while. These are the best I've found:
Landscape Wallpaper - Good settings. Separate WP for lockscreen. Offers wallpaper scrolling, if desired (good when launcher doesn't support.) Can't choose to update on wake (only time limit), however seems to update on wake after timespan has elapsed.
Wallpaper Changer - Best options for gallery selection. Let's you choose and save custom albums, mixed of folders and individual pics. Can't modify albums. Seems quirky.
MultiPicture Live Wallpaper - Simple, works great. Can set to update with screen awake or even double tap. Supports web albums.

What I liked was the slow pan across each wallpaper before it faded to the next one.
I had a set of wallpapers with the same colours but different designs and it would switch to one, pan across, then fade to the next and pan across... I think the choice of panning left or right was random. It was just a nice behaviour that wasn't distracting but added a little interest, and the fade meant there was no jarring switch from one wallpaper to the next. Also it seemed to have no effect on battery usage,
