Modify hosts file? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Currently I am using firefly 2.9 and I have been trying to remove stats.wordpress from the blocked list so that I can receive stats on my wordpress site. I modified the file and copied it to the system/ect folder but it won't replace the old file.
I've tried deleting the old version and copying the new modified version in its place, but the old file keeps coming back! I've tried to match the permissions of the new file to the original but the settings don't stick.
Anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk

Try doing it through adb:
copy the hosts file to your sd card, do whatever modifications you want on it, then do:
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/stl9 /system
cp /sdcard/hosts /system/etc
sync
reboot
or optionally, you can push it through clockwork as an update.zip

Clockwork sounds like the way I'd like to go... Do I just zip the file and call it update.zip? Or is there more to it than that? (i would assume)
I would do the adb method, but I have had bad luck with that in the past.
Thanks

There's more to it than that; it has to have a specific structure and an update script. Here's a guide:
http://www.robmcghee.com/android/creating-an-android-update-zip-package/
You don't need to sign it, so you can skip that step.

Okay thanks! I'll try to mess with it tomorrow.
Thanks again!

if youre installing into the /system folder then its required to make the directory r/w or you won't be able to copy the apk to the system directory. for market apps this process isn't required.

I know you got your answer, but if you had spent some time reading the Andromeda threads in Q&A (a sticky) and Dev you would have gotten your answer easily. This should have been posted in the sticky. That's what it is here for. Please use it before starting a new thread in the future.

What does the zip file do?
Flashable zip?
*edit* nevermind I just peeked inside the zip.
For post above me, you flash through clockwork, and it flashes the calibration tool needed.
And btw its no included at all in gb, hence the need for this to be flashed

I would think you could just download a rom open it up with winrar and copy it out and post it with credits and permission of coarse, just to be safe
Well the reason i mentioned the 3 files, is that sensorcalibutil_yamaha was the only file that's flashed in this fix. Hence why it might not work? Again, i know nothing of fixes and development on Android, but from a programming perspective, i would say they're dependent files...
Who knows... If anyone feels like taking the time to re-create this fix with the files listed, it just may work. =\

S-Voice on IncS ?

Got S-Voice to work on our phones.
check post below ;D
got it to work see attached photos
HOW DO YOU INSTALL?
1. Download files on link below(Extract on your desktop). If you download to phone directly, you still need to extract to a normal folder.
2. Contained within is 2 files.(voicetalk.apk & libsvoxtts.so)
3. Place voicetalk.apk in system/app with "Root Explorer" or like(Use Mount R/W and set permissions by holding voicetalk.apk to see sub-menu). Make sure to make permissions as "rw-r--r--".
4. Now place libsvoxtts.so on /system/lib.
5. Reboot IT WILL INSTALL ON REBOOT. NO NEED TO CHANGE build.prop such as with others.
6. ENJOY, then ask funny questions to it.

I do have root and i also know how to chnage permissions. I was having a stupid moment as the gf is asking me ridiculous questions about her new phone, .....she wont let me go near it for if i root it LOL
Why do we have to chnage it to RW-R-R, as opposed to the automatic RW-RW-RW

I tell it to set an alarm for 5.30am, it says here is your alarm..............But it doesnt actually set an alarm? If i go into the clock app theres no alarm set?

[MOD] [ICS] [9/9/12] Tube TV Shut Down Animation [v1.0]

This is a shut down animation for your HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity (obviously xD). You have to root your device to be able to install it and have ES File Explorer or whatever you use.. download the downanimation.zip DO NOT UNZIP IT!! Open up ES File Explorer, hit menu, scroll down to root settings, and check everything in there. Ok, after that you're going to wanna copy/cut the downanimation.zip from wherever you downloaded it and navigate to system/customize/resource and paste it there, OVERWRITING THE OLD DOWNANIMATION.ZIP!!
In AOSP ROMs its in system/media or data/local
Credits:
