How to edit system files? - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Perhaps noob question, but i want to take a look at system files (button-backlight for instance) and play/edit them. But I don't have a clue how to do that.
I'm using root explorer and super manager.
I'm having root and am able to get adb shell (learned myself some adb commands
Thanks!

Updating to stock froyo.

My mom has a captivate running stock android 2.1.
I only enabled lagfix on her phone and nothing else.
After the official froyo came out I was thinking about updating it.
I have a few questions about it. Please answer as many as you can...
1. Will all apps disappear?
2. If yes for #1 do I need to get titanium backup?
3. Do I disable lagfix?
Please help.. thank you

Here's your answer, search the forums. You will find it.
1. All apps will dissapear! Be warned
2. You should use titanium backup thats a good idea but the kb1 must be rooted and sideloading enable to get them all back (use super one click) also put the titanium backup folder on external sd or on computer just in case
3. YES DISABLE THE LAGFIX VERY IMPORTANT

Thanks for the reply!. Would have caused a great trouble if I didn't question this...
Anyway just wondering, if I just had the captivate and did not know anything about root/flash/etc I would have just updated and gotten everything deleted right?
Did Samsung mention the fact that all my apps would have disappeared?. I just think its unfair to some people....

With normal android devices this would not have been an issue as the apps reinstall when you light into your Google account but that feature is missing from the Galaxy line

Yea, you should take all the important folders off your internal sd card like the titanium backup folder and put them spmewhere on you computer, that's what I did and once I updated I got all my files back, I still needed to root/enable sideloading to get my apps from TiBu back
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yes, it would have gotten deleted even if you hadn't upgraded to the ji6 build of froyo

Is that true? Now it makes sense why nothing seems to happen when I go to a new rom.
No clue... Probably a comp or browser

TW Launcher (default) reinstall

Hello fellow xda members. I had a problem the other day. I installed sgs tools and tried downloading a different launcher. It loaded the launcher fine but I wasn't satisfied. I tried restoring it but it gives the error "folder not found." I was wondering if anybody knows how to reinstall the built in default tw launcher and if I can possibly restore the layout.

I'm sure you could find the apk with a search.
Are you running a custom rom?
No, I'm runnin default android 2.2 froyo. Rooted, but nand backup doesn't work either. A few months ago, I tried backing up with rom manager, but after rebooting, their still wasn't any backups availible to restore. When I boot into system recovery, it doesn't even open cyogenmod reovery.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
CM revovery? Stock 2.2? I'm confused.
I tried. Google doesn't show any, only custom launchers and I don't want that.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Bump...
Did you manually check the sgs tools folder for the backup of your stock launcher?
I've been using the gingerbread launcher from the market and I really like it. Just putting it out there to think about it.
Sorry I meant clockwork recovery mod. THAT didn't work or I wouldn't be asking for a way to reinstall default tw launcher. Thanks for all the current ideas

If you still need it, I attached it for you. Just drop it in the system/app folder. Good luck.
Never mind.someone else got it.

The one from the market is super easy. And if you accidentally delete it, it's there to reinstall
This is the one from my phone. Dont know if it is what you are looking for as i am currently running Continuum, but good luck.
I think you might need the .odex file as well since I recall seeing that you are running stock 2.2. Did you delete that file?
I'm not sure. How do I check?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
You can use Root explorer or a similar app and navigate to system/app. See if there are .odex files for the corresponding apk's. If the one for the launcher is missing than that would cause the issue. What happens when you try to run the launcher? does it just force close?
edit: I was able to find the apk and .odex file from a stock 2.2 build. Just drop it in hopefully this works. Just unzip and extract the files manually.
I can't find it. All there is is the .odex for the tw launcher wallpaper

^ I was editing my post while you posted, in case you missed it, I added the files you need.

Manually installing system apps

Hi there. After deleting the clock app from my note I have been sent the apk again to reinstall. However aftrr pushing file into system/app i cannot get it to install and it does not show up in app drawer. I have permissions set at RW R R but still nothing.
Am I doing something wrong? All help appreciated.

Bit more info on this. I am on LQ2 with Root and standard kernel.
Only thing i havent done that I can think of is to simply reload LQ2 and start again but this seems a bit much for the sake of an alarm clock. I have installed a basic clock from market but i much predfered the stock clock.

Haven't you got a backup which includes the clock? Always do backups with titanium backup before removing system apps.
In case you got titanium backup pm me your email address and I will send you my backup of the clock. I think this is the simplest way.

Yeah i realise now that i should have done a back up but i deleted the wrong app whilst i was cleaning up and didnt realise till later.

Did you reboot after pushing the apk and setting permissions? It has to be done for changes to take effect.
Yeah rebooted and cleared davlik cache as well.
I think the problem might be that there is still parts of the alarm or clock app left in the the registry or system/app folder but I cant find them. For time being i downloaded a copy of the Clock app from tge Nexus and it works fine.

Sending you titanium backup of clock, place it to titanium backup folder and restore it.
Check PM after some time.

I did exactly the same. Sent it to him by email. No response yet whether it worked or not.

Ok so tried to do a backup and titanium says its reinstalling app but just stays at that sort of buffering circle for as long as i care to leave the phone to run. In titanium the backup shows being available for backup with the smiley face etc. I can see titanium getting su access etc as well but just not reinstalling.
Might need to admit defeat lol.

Really it wud be very easy to reflash ROM.
Dr Ketan your totally right i just didnt want to. Now though i have spent that long messing about i would have been as well doing it to start with.

[Q] Galaxy S Messaging app missing

I was using Titanium Backup Pro and was integrating updates into system apps and i lost my messaging app. Titanium backup says it is still installed but i cant open it and i cant uninstall it either.
I'm currently getting by with Handcent but i want my stock app back.
Can anyone help me get my messaging app back or do i have to stick with Handcent?
Any help is appreciated.
I'm using a Rooted Samsung Galaxy S GT-I1900M
Android Version 2.2
Rooted with Superuser
(hope all this stuff helps)
Only thing I think of is flash a new rom or reflash the one your using and your messaging app should show up

I would have tried that but i'm scared ill brick my phone. i have bad luck when it comes to doing things like this. i pink screened my iPod once.
Download a custom ROM, download "File Manager HD" from Market, enable root access in the settings and push Mms.apk from Custom ROM Zip into system/app
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
If i do that will I lose any of the data on the internal SD? I was thinking of doing factory reset but I'd lose all the stuff on my internal SD
Sent from my GT-I9000M using xda app-developers app
Factory reset only deletes the apps, system and accounts. If you are still on Froyo, I'd recommend you to flash a Gingerbread ROM, or even an ICS one. You can backup your apps with some file managers too, but you'll lose all user data from them.
But as long as you don't wipe "sdcard" you'll keep all your music, photos and documents stores on your internal memory, even after dozens of flashes.

Do you think you could help me through the flashing process? Or send me a link to a guide I could use
