Ok so here's the newb in me. I was trying to get Netflix working on my rooted NC. I made a backup of build.prop by making a copy and renaming it build.prop.bak. I went into build.prop to change the product model and manufacturer. I did that, saved and rebooted but Netflix still did not work...whatever.
I decided to give up for the night, so I went back into /system and renamed build.prop.bak back to build.prop. At this point I had 2 build.prop files. I deleted the modified one to find out that both had been deleted.
i thought a reboot (again newb mistake) would magically restore the build.prop file (hind-sight says obviously it wasn't going to). It reaches the "n" screen and then the screen flashes black.
Is there a way to fix this without reflashing? I know there this thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=949699
I did use Titanium Backup to back up all my "stuff" on the SD card if that means anything. Again, sorry for the dumb questions.
Any help would be appreciated!
Easy method - re-flash your ROM without clearing data. Will also overwrite any other tweaks.
More difficult method. Extract the build.prop from the ROM you are using. Boot into CWM and push the build.prop using ADB.

so for easy method, are you referring to setting up a bootable SD card with Clockwork Mod and reflashing ManualNooter?

My bad. I assumed you were on CM7.
Since you are on stock B&N, your options now are pretty much flash one of the stock images (and lose everything - ie. return to stock) or extract the build.prop from the stock image, boot into CWM, and ADB push the build.prop.

Yeah. This is what I ended up doing...such a PITA. Oh well, at least it can be done this way. Thanks for the help!

Thanks to Mike919 we now have a clockwork recovery backup that you can recover to your phone.
What does this give me? well it gives you a way to restore your phone to its default state but it has already been rooted and deodexed.
If you dont know what root or deodexed are then please search around the forums. I'm sorry but i simply dont have the time to answer a thousand questions.
How do i use this?
Well it's very simple.
Unzip the file
On your sdcard make a folder in sdcard\clockworkmod\backup with todays date on it like \sdcard\clockworkmod\backup\2010-08-23.23.30.41
Extract the contents of This File into that folder. There should be 5 files inside when you are done.
Install Koush's Clockwork recovery (if you haven't already)
Boot into Koush's recovery
Choose restore, then navigate to the folder you created earlier
Choose restore. Then follow the instructions on the screen.
When you reboot you will have a totally clean system, with Froyo 2.2, already rooted. and fully deodexed.
I can this tell you that this does work. I have done it myself. I also know of one other person that has done it with no problems.
Please grab the file while you can, who knows how long this will stay up.
oh, also it has a black bar with transparency. Other versions will follow i'm sure you can always replace your framework-res.apk and services.jar if you don't like it.
again search alldroid if you need help with this.

Awesome thank you Mike
Stupid question but you know its gonna be asked.... you need to be on 2.2 before applying the 2.2 nandroid correct?
Yeah.

are we suppose to wipe or just restore this?
Nice, thanks for the heads up. Worked flawlessly! Teenfaces' black status bar looks gorgeous! =)

@mach330: just restore using provided files. I didn't wipe, was on rooted leaked froyo.
thanks...so it retains all our stuff? aight...gonna try this out in a bit. been having problems with nandroid backup on froyo. didn't wanna go to sbf flash to do this again. i'm hoping this will fix this problem.
NO! It WILL install a fresh froyo build. This will probably come late to you though...
ok thanks...hmm..now i'm debating. you think this will fix my nandroid backup problem?
Do an advanced restore and only redo the system partition not the data and you'll keep your data and get the improved system files

crap...i guess i answered my own question. tried to restore only the system and i get:
E:can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0 (or /dev/block/mmcblkp1)
(Device or resource is busy)
Can't mount /sdcard
Does this mean i gotta do an sbf flash?

Can anyone confirm if this will work or not? So far we've gotten two conflicting answers.
So since I was born yesterday.....
What's the difference between this and the root/2.2 leak I did the other day?. Is this blur free in all ways? Cause that's the only reason I would wipe and go through all those proper steps is to be 100% blur free.

yes, i can confirm. works like a charm.
Hi i'm hoping someone can help, As i cannot find a definitive answer anywhere
I would like to copy the following recovery files back into the system folder on my N1 recovery-from-boot.p and install-recovery.sh using terminal.
admittedly im not adept at using bash, and am having a tough time as when i try to copy the files over, despite having root access i get a message along the lines of cannot cp to /system.
alternatively, would anyone be able to point me to the stock recovery image for 2.2.1 frg83d?
many thanks

Before you can copy files to that partition, you have to mount it as rw, as it is ro.
Or you can download root explorer from the market, which would make things easier.

thanks, i'll give it a shot!
basically what i am trying to do is replace the custom recovery with the stock one. i rooted my phone, flashed amon ra's recovery, and went custom.
to be honest, its not really for me to much hedache in backing up files, and then reinstalling all pps one by one and waiting for everything to sync back. ive flashed my stock rom backup back. but i didnt backup before deleting the two files in system and system/etc that bring the stock recovery back on reboot. im hoping that by replacing them from an earlier backup made i can go back to full stock with stock recovery

Or you can just extract the recovery.img from a stock image found here: http://developer.htc.com and use flash_image to flash it.
**** ****. I was messing around with the options in Titanium Backup Pro and selected an option that said that i can remove a few apps that have been linked to my ROM and free upto 80 MB in memory. It had something to do with Dalvik Cache. The software said that the phone will restart after the process. But the phone gets stuck at the HTC Quietly Brilliant Brilliant" white screen and re-boots. I tired Pulling out the battery, Wiping cache, Factory reset using CWM but the problem continues. What do i do? The phone is hardly 3 weeks old. Its still S-ON, rooted and unlocked at htcdev.com
Can you not restore a nandroid? Or try flashing a rom that doesn't need s-off like CyanogenMod 7.

Yeah i tried doing that. But get this error message in CWM:
Code:
Couldn't open directory.
No files found.
The Backup is in a folder "2012-02-12.06.04.17" and this folder is in the sd-card root. Do i have to copy the files in this folder to the root as well??
Edit: I forgot to mention that the above nandroid backup folder was saved in my computer and the sd card on which i had made the backup initially was involved in multiple formats during my futile attempts to gain S-OFF ..

You shouldn't have to. Was the backup created in cwm? Have you checked that the files are in the folder? What option were you using to restore your backup?
Another option would be to installed a custom ROM.
I guess if you are using CWM, the folder will not be on root.
As far as I remember, it use to be in some folder named CWM or ClockWorkMod something like that.
I guess the folder "2012-02-12.06.04.17" should be under "\clockworkmod\backup\" folder.
Not quite sure as I am using Ext4 recovery now.
But guess someone around here should tell you the correct folder structure.
And, I guess if you could try to mount card on your computer you will be able to see and modify the folder and put it in right place with correct backup directory.
I think i have to create a few folders since the path that CWM is looking for the recovery doesn't exist. Can you tell me the correct path so that i can create an identical location to copy the backup to??
It'd literally take you 5 mins to install a custom rom? And then in theory your fine will work perfectly. Then just set it up and create a nandroid.
When I had problems I formatted the SD card and only left the CWM files on. Then it restored/worked fine.

way2shree was correct in his post about the file structure. I think you need to do a bit of research before you do any serious damage to your phone.

Like i said the SD card on which CWM made the backup was formatted many times. Completely. So i had copied the folder with the backup to the computer.[Newb mistake. I realized the hard way]. And no the path is not \clockworkmod\backup\. Thanks anyway shree. Also i think CM7 is the only 1 that can be flashed with a S-on phone. so ill keep that as a final option since i still like sense.

I am looking for a way to flash complete stock rom witch is no where to be found? I deleted system apps thinking that will do the 8 boot fail thing and actually it didn't work like it did before? I need a flashable stock rom if it's possible? Any ideas?
Edit:
I also did a factory reset in cwm and that did not work either.
If you'd like to restore your device to factory default, you're need to do the "8-boot-loop-fail". This is not an automatic process, and you must do it manually.
Turn off your device.
Turn on your device.
Once you see the text "Nook" on your screen (before your Nook boots up), hold the power button down until the screen goes blank (turns off).
Repeat from step 2, seven more times (totalling to 8 failed boot attempts).
Do this eight (8) times, and your Nook will restore to factory defaults on the ninth boot. On the ninth boot, do not turn it off, let it do it's thing. It will take a while, and will restore the device back to stock; erasing all data on Internal Storage.
When performing the 8 boot-loop, I'd note down somewhere the amount of times you've turned your Nook off, as you can easily lose count.

I haven't messed around with the nook.. but before I was able to delete a system app and it restored itself after a reboot?
Anyways.. Your guide did work. Thank you!
So my question now is are we able to edit stock files without it rebooting?

Look at my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature. I have a factory rom zip that can be flashed with my bootable CWM card. See item 9 and read the show content for the links and instructions.
The reason you are not back to where you were before you reset is because you were probably on a different version of stock ROM before it reset. The one stored on the device is usually older than what you had on it since it probably had updated itself a few times.
When you flash my plain stock (2.0.0) it will update itself to the latest version (currently 2.0.6) when you register.

Glad to hear you've got it sorted.
I'm unsure which stock/system app would cause the reboot, as I haven't looked too deeply into it, sorry. Regarding editing stock files; yes, you can edit to your hearts content to what is visible. However once rooted, you can then edit additional files. You may get away with editing certain files, however, if you edit anything within the "/system/" directory, that will force a system reboot, and will erase all your content.
So in basic terms, you cannot edit within the "/system/" directory on the stock ROM. There maybe other files too which are outside this directory, but I haven't tested them either, sorry. But I can tell you that anything in system is a no-go.
All the best.

That is what I was messing with. The "/system" files. I deleted some stock apps and it did not restored itself after a reboot? I am really shocked that it did not reboot itself back to its default. Last time i deleted an app from the /system it restored back to default. I used the latest Es File Explorer.

It could be that ES File Explorer did not really delete them. You have to set /system to r/w before deleting works.

I did R/W to the entire system. I deleted voice recording and then i forget the other apps, but it was all the system. I rebooted and it was completely out of the system. I am going to try to make google apps to work with stock rooted without it restoring itself after a reboot?
Edit:
I was on 2.0.6 Firmware if that means anything?
Edit:
You can edit /system/app but not anything else.
I install gapps and rebooted just fine and it kept all my stuff without it restoring itself..
Thanks

Hello,
I am not exactly sure how, but somehow in moboot I see :
- CWM
- ClockWorkMod
CWM works, the other does not.
How do I remove the 2nd one then?
I have been searching online, but all I can find is that installing CWM would remove the previous recovery but it does not work for me....
Thanks!
The only correct way to do it is start back to square one. You'll have to do an acmeunimstaller to get that off I believe. If anyone else knows correct me if I'm wrong. But do that then reinstall android with only the 4 zips

Yours is the SAFE way, but if you're adventurous and knowledgeable, you can use a root browser to navigate to /boot. Look for a file named uImage.ClockWorkMod; copy it to the sdcard (just to be safe in case you screw up); and then delete it in /boot. Make sure you also have a file named uImage.CWM, which should be the working recovery image. Reboot and the offending recovery should be gone. If you screw up, you should still be able to boot into the ROM and either restore the file you deleted or reinstall CWM.
