[Q] Does flashing damage the hardware? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
So, I flash MIUI at least twice a week.
is there any impact of this repetitive flashing to the galaxy hardware?
MS

No it does not
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

I cant give a strong statement on this, but if it is like reformatting a hard disk on PC every now and then, then it might harm the phone. What I know for sure is that overclocking reduces the lifetime of the CPU.

In a sense yes, flashing your phone will use the SD card more then it really should be used. It increases the amount of wear leveling on the SD card. So, instead of the SD card being able to work for 99999 write cycles, it may only do 88888. Something like that anyways. Although you'd never notice this in the phones lifetime. So practically it does not

My mobile is getting slow for no reason

Hi everyone,
Guess I need your help...
I have firmware over hundreds of ROM for my own taste and I’m using Energy and Xanny ROMs... and been running for a week then now my mobile is getting useless... Funny things that I removed my memory stick 8GB SDHC and it fast without memory stick... is that possible memory stick make our mobile go slow? Should we after an expensive brand name SD? I’m using Transcend 8GB SDHC which included with Blackstone...
Cheers
Roberto
The memory cards only have a certain amount of write cycles before they give up and die. While they usually last for ages under normal use, if you are a heavy user they can become much slower over a shorter time. There are different "classes" of cards as well which let you access them faster/slower. I think the HD only accepts Class6 max. So maybe it's time for you to try a benchmarking program to see the speed it reads/writes at, and compare it to other people's speeds. Maybe you will need a new one.

What brand name of Micro SD you have?

flashing rom VS running off sd

pros and cons of flashing a rom onto device or run from sd card?
am I asking this question wrong?
I guess this question has been asked several times. It's very easy to flash back to stock and the NC seems to be unbrickable, then I think you can try both to know which one you like best and get your asnwer by yourself.
Regards!
I'm very much a newbie (haven't even USED the NC yet), but:
Pro: SD card approach is extremely clean; you can leave the stock internal "eMMC" ROM alone, UNROOTED, and boot off it again at will, just by removing the SD card.
Pro: You can boot off different Android distributions as easily as swapping SD cards.
Con: Many people find SD card booted operations significantly slower. The sweet spot seems to be using a Class 6 card? (Class 10s are faster but not as many good reports from what I've read.)
I don't think you will realistically see any difference between class 6+ cards. I doubt the Nook itself can perform at true class 6 speeds, so the card isn't the weakest link...

[Q] Recommendations for a new SDcard for XT720

My Korean Motoroli seems to be having big problems with the SDcard recently. Originally I had the factory-issued no-name 8gig class 4 in it and now I have some other no-name brand 16gig class 8 in it, but the problems still remain.
The phone will either "loose" many photos when I use the camera (not writing them to the card) or will even sometimes go to a black screen and then just reboot. Sometimes it even just simply hard-locks the phone requiring me to pull the battery.
What recommended bands/class of sdcard would fix this? Or is the problem something else?

Can I ask which ROM you are using? What sort of modifications youve done to the phone? I myself use the stock class 2 8GB and have never had many problems. Since you have the problem on multiple SDcards, it seems like a hardware problem. Bit if you are using a customROM, maybe somethings messing up there. More information would be helpful.

That´s absolutely true.
Will try ext4 in the next days.
Okay, looks like that's the card I should buy. I found a Korean source for it here: http://item.gmarket.co.kr/detailview/Item.asp?goodscode=216437760
Hopefully It might fix some of my problems...
Well, I got the new SDcard (see above) and it seems to be a little better (slightly more responsive)... but the phone still locks up and and/or reboots when I take a photo sometimes. The chance of it happening seems to be less now, but it's still likely to happen.
Any other ideas? Have any other users had a similar problem to this?
Hey check out this thread (see my post #19). A good conversation about cards and classes. Maybe read before you buy and commit.

Card type and class has much to do with camera quality and also video too.
Surprised there isn't more talk about this issue with all the sdcard issues we have. With HD recording and an 8mpxl camera it seems we need a better class card, I need to get a couple for my phones and I am trying to find the best buy on a samsung. My question for anyone who has experience is if I spend the money on a class 10 samsung, is it going to make a big noticeable difference? Will it stop a lot of the issues or is the issue more related to Android and even more so with XT720? Is there anyone who has upgraded who can answer? Seems it will but I would hate to spend the money and not get much improvement.

I am currently using a Samsung Class 10 16GB card that I ordered somewhere online. My main Issue always was with transferring media and this card tackles the problem with ease, I do not get black screen problems anymore. The camera seemed ok with no major differences that I noticed, but usual camera freezes have reduced. Overall I would suggest an upgrade.

It's the same for me. Since 1 day I replaced my stock 8gb sdcard by a lexar 8gb class 10 and no more problem to transfer (hope it will continue) and video record under cm7.2 is smooth.

No,black screen issues are very rare. But have to admit they tend to happen at times, though negligible.

Hi maruki, does it fix your sd card problem. I am also experiencing sd card problem when taking photographs or any activity that will require writing to sd card. (Downloading, etc) I am also suspecting it is a sd card issue and hoping the problem is not on our device. I also plan to buy new one since I am using the stock mem card that comes with the unit. I want to know if it worked for you.
by the way, setting the camera to lower resolution seems to fix the sd card writing failure in my case.
there is new type of sd card, UHS-1 which seem to to deliver a very high speed and write, topping any current sd card in market now as decribed here: http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/05/samsung-ultra-high-speed-microsd/
maybe when it's available I'll purchased one, also the best thing is that it can be used for swap ram to fix xt720 low ram problem. do you think so?
but I'm also not sure if these uhs-1 cards are compatible with xt 720 or not. If anyone plans to buy one when it's available please review after that i'll also do a review when I get one.

Anyone else have a Pi that resets with the slightest touch?

I have a Pi model B(ver 1), but its a little frustrating to use because just the absolute slightest touch to the sd card seems to make the filesystem unreadable?
Are the SD slots on the Pi all so frustratingly sensitive and unreliable?
Is there a way to maybe make it less likely to cause crashes? A shim in the slot? A different(fatter) kind of SD card maybe? Or do I need to maybe resolder the socket or something?
Any ideas?

I do not personally own one but I have a buddy that has one and he is having the same issue, so if anyone knows it would be a great help.
Sorry I can't personally help, but my thoughts on it would be to take a close look at it and see if anything seems loose to the touch, then find a way to fix it accordingly.

I'd say switch power supply, don't overclock and switch SD card.
I've got 2 Pis, 2 rev2, one is 256mb RAM and the other is 512mb RAM, non have the problem you're experiencing.

My sd card slot was broken, possible you have the same problem.
This is a fix for this problem:
http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=7751&docid=
Yes! I have had that issue a few times, but I got it to work, by doing "sudo poweroff" and then unplugging it completely.
Im seconding three posts up about no overclocking and swapping sd card and psu
You can also check the voltage on board to if you have a voltmeter but i dont remember if its possible on rev1
and rev 1 was funky to begin with.
My pi with raspbmc and its rev2 with 512 mb ram doesnt have the problem either
It depends on the building you are in. I'm guessing it is quite old? ESD is a *****.

It could be a case your using if you are using one that puts pressure on the card.

Question What did you do with your micro sd card after you upgraded to S21 Ultra?

Coming from the Galaxy Note 10+, I decided to upgrade to S21 Ultra since it supports s pen. And while I'm a power s pen user, I didn't mind the removal of a few s pen features. What I actually did mind is the fact that they removed the micro sd card slot. I was rocking a 400GB micro sd on my old phone but now I don't know what to do with it. I'm also worried that I might fill up the internal 256GB soon as it had happened to me before, it's why I bought the sd card on my Note 10+ in the first place.
Share what you did with your old micro sd cards and maybe I can find a solution with my small ordeal.
I haven't used an SD card in a phone for 5 years now. I also have not lost a single photo or file due to cloud backups being so efficient.
Easy.. Get USB C MicroSD card reader and plug your old card in. Back up photos when needed..
Send it to Samsung, tell them you want to be reimbursed.
I'm using mine in a dashcam for my car. Over time, the microsd cards can wear out, so it's good to keep feeding the dashcam...
Threw it in my Tab S7+

Moaning about in peoples threads is not going to suddenly make Samsung support SD cards. Got a problem with your phone purchase then go argue with a mirror as that's your fault, plenty of phones that due support them.

Nope, won't be trading a horse for a donkey. It cost me an extra $400 to aquire a device with the amount of storage I need because greedy Sammy pulled the plug on MicroSD with their flagship smartphone. For that amount I'm entitled to moan as much as I like!
Put it in my backup s8+. I'm really hoping they come back with microSD support cause like you, I bought a 400gb card. And it's actually nice to have the option of backing up my pictures to card and uploading them through cloud

You bought an expensive phone that doesn't do what you want it to do. The only thing you're "entitled to moan about" is your bad decision making. Like someone moaning the car they bought does not have 2 wheels because they wanted a motorbike

That's your opinion which means nothing to me. I made the right decision, Samsung is the one who blew chunks lowering internal storage capacity and dropping external storage. Most users feel the same, if you don't agree who cares?
Had a 256GB card almost full on my S8 and it's still sitting around.
Don't really care about photos or videos since I can cloud store whatever, but I like to have my music on the phone to listen on the go through a DAC.
Down to 170GB free at the moment on the 512GB phone, but I could probably clean up around 5GB.
You can never have too much backup storage although hdds are preferable over flash. Good for backing up that lame one drive phone
Meh I'm still running my 10+ still on Pie because both Samsung and Gookill dropped the ball multiple times.
No SD card slot, no sale.
Samsung been playing this game for years, lol it's not the end of the SD card slot for Sammy unless they're hell bent on losing a big chunk of their customer base.
As it is now Android 11 is dud. More fail to come with 12 as well? I might just be running 10+'s for a couple more years.
Whatever, I don't care, fk 'em.
The only upgrade I'm doing is going from a 512gb card to a 1tb V30 card
Maybe buy another 10+ or less likely a 20U.
Sammy dearest; actions have consequences...
Save them for the Note 22 Ultra which will have the SD card slot again.

Heh, of all the good suggestion here this is the one I think I'll agree on the most, albeit a bit ridiculous. However, since I just renewed my contract with my network provider this year, I won't be able to get a new phone until 2023, so maybe Note 23? Lol

I hope this is true. If not, I'll have to move on to Sony phones. My 1tb card is sitting in .y drawer waiting to be used again. In the meantime I'm managing the space on my phone all the time to make sure I don't go over. Makes it inconvenient.

Turn it into a backup drive but always back that up redundantly with at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other. No such thing as too much backup.
Since you lost the data drive capacity with the SD card slot frequent internal memory backups are mandatory. A .5tb flash stick is the easiest then verify the data and back it up to the stand alone hdds. Staggering the hdd backups to the hdds helps to prevent possible malware data lose.
Flash memory by it's self is not a good backup plan... use hdds as the primary backup. Keep the backups off the PC OS hdd.
The best setup is always separate OS and data drives... Samsung

Wrong again, guess you didn't notice XDA changed course and decided to post a link for unlocking US Branded devices after myself and others raised objections. Samsung may do the same as they pay close attention to posts in thus forum. Your opinion won't alter my dissent but you might want to apply for a position in Samsung's PR Department, your defense of their brain dead move will likely gain you a fast promotion.
