Tell me please what rom you have on your phone now and what is better in it then in others?
I use CyanogenMod 7 latest nightlies with glitch kernel, whitch allows you to overclock up to 1.6Ghz. Anyway, I have most of the time my phone overclocked to 1.2Ghz. It's really fast even without overclock. I would recommend you replacing the default launcher (ADW) either with ADW EX or Launcher Pro or anything else, because the ADW App Drawer lags (unlike everything else). I didn't like the default camera app, so I downloaded and installed the MIUI one, which BTW supports touch to focus. Also the rom is highly customizable.
Ok, I heard good things about this rom, but i tried it and it wasn't that good, I think that MIUI is better, but I want to hear more opinions
i am using miui!
for me it feels smoother and faster than samsung roms. i rarly have fcs and it feel very different from any other galaxy rom! just try it and judge for yourself, i did try many roms!
I watched some MIUI videos, but for me it looks too iPhone-like. Maybe I'll give it a try some day. BTW MIUI is based on CyanogenMod, so if you experienced some bug, it will be most likely present in MIUI too. Only think I don't like on CM7 is that the button on stock headset doesn't work (AFAIK it did somewhere around build #12), so I have to always put my phone out my pocket, every time I wanna pause the music
Sorry for my bad English
I use SUPERAOSP AW-8.2. OC 1.4GHz very stable & very fast.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
im using MIUI MCGv6, so far one of the best eyecandy for me. If you want great battery life and performance go for Darkyy's rom
Thank you, Im using MIUI right now, but I dont like it look, it fast and stable most of the time but the it looks too much like an iphone, I didn't tried superaosp, is it that good? or it sometimes unstable?
now using superAOSP, nice and fast, but I am trying to figure out why it drains the battery. I was on JUWE 4.3.1, fast and battery friendly.
And what about juwe's rom?
CM7, hands down. Idk why anyone uses Samsung ROMs. Yeah there may be a few bugs with CM7 but they get fixed every fews days.
I use Bezke's ROM. He is a Hungarian guy and his ROM's are fantasic and very stable. Absolutely recommended, helpful ROM maker.
What about juwe's rom?
i am currently using miui mcgv5.3. it is highly customizable rom and you can easly switch between themes. also it performs good. bettery life is acceptable has no lag issues.
but if want a rom that is best in everything then you can try darkyrom v10. it is really fast and also very stable.
SuperAOSP. Really fast! But I also like CM7, Miui and GalaxySense... no more samsung pleaaase

Hey everyone
I Recently upgraded from my crappy old Motorola milestone to Optimus black,
Now from what i have noticed so far, the only available costume ROMs are CM7 (unofficial) and Nova 1, is that right?
From my experience with the milestone, those costume ROMs had bugs and the battery life was really lame comparing to stock,
So i'd like to know what are the benefits and downsides of switching to CM7 or Nova 1 comparing to stock, and if i should just wait for the official gingerbread release that from what i understand is suppose to be release this month.
Thanks!
Hi!
i am using Nova 2.2 v8 based on froyo with heuxxx mod and i am quiet happy about it.
you can see a huge difference in battery life when you change some settings like underclocking, i/o schedulers and governor. (and ofcourse how you use of your smartphone)
however if you use it all day on 3g and playing games then it wont last 12 hours on either stock rom or stock nova rom, soo yeah its like every other smartphone.
i prefer Nova over stock because its not as glitchy as the stock rom, imo.
my choice would be Nova because CM is still in development.
and yes i am also waiting to see what gingerbread has to offer.
Nova ROM is simply wonderful... i have used for a month and all run perfectly, there are no comparisons respect stock rom:nova rom is more fast e smooth and don't drain battery (you can set governor).
Unfortunately his development is been stopped and i have decided to pass to CM7 nightly, this have also some little bugs but with knzo kernel (the developer of Nova ROM) or Huexxx's kernel i think that is better and more fast and very customizable.
I have resisted with stock rom 3 days... i suggest to try this wonderful ROM
I don't want to be an ass but my personal expirience with nova2.2v8 wasn't that good I could even say that stock worked better [this is only in my case and usage]
So instead of going back to stock, I flashed cm7n13 w/knzo kernel v1 and is just beauty, fantastic, greater than ever... the only known bug is recording video... apart from that it's pretty stable, fast, smooth, battery is way better improved
Nova ROM sounds pretty good, i'll look into it, thanks!
Hi Guys,
I am currently running the CM7 ROM (7.1.0.6 Milestone-KANG) on my Milestone. While the ROM is much better and faster than the stock ROM it still gets slow and laggy sometimes (Overclocked to 800 MHz).
Please let me know which the are fastest Gingerbread based ROMs out there and is there anything else that can be done to increase the responsiveness of the device.
Cheers...
Chander
Try HO!NO 7.1.1. It is build from kabaldan source, Android 2.3.7 and I love it
Zatapatalkowane z MotoStone'a
Ultimate Milestone (formerly Ice and Fire) is the fastest ROM i've used.
i used ultimate mod (ice and fire) but switchted to HO!NO! then.
i had trouble with minfree settings (check thread) that it killed my apps...
HO!NO! is even faster, more beautiful (i love this ICS design and transitions) and reliable (not killing any app). i only had to adjust permissions in OR once.
I must disagree with you guys. Ho!NO! ROM is very RAM consuming.
OK it looks nice but the phone is slow and lags a lot.
Stock froyo ROM with setcpu works faster, you must admit it.
I flashed my milestone with HO!NO! after reading this thread but i`m dissapointed.
I think I`ll give a try with a vanilla cyanogenmod
@up, apply Supercharger from zeppelinrox with best settings that fits for you and then try

where i find vanilla cm rom to milestone?
Ultimate Milestone (formerly Ice and Fire), is my best. Only complaint was camera (as with any CM7 based), then downloaded MIUI Camera and I'm done!
If you are open to something else.... the FASTEST rom out there is by far TelusLite (eclair and no longer developed) but if you want brute speed... that is the way to go.

i used CM6 from milaq 6.3.x - 6.3.4).... very fast and "low" RAM usage
then switched to CM7... it works well too but i feel the RAM usage when opening apps like MAPS to navigate or want to play some games. navigation browser and apps may close without warning...
then tried again milaqs CM6 (6.3.6)... it was ok but RAM usage is not good as the versions before...
i recommend milaqs 6.3.3 or 6.3.4... these two are ok, fast and you can use the most apps withouts errors.... and with supercharger you can get 60-70MB free RAM
IMHO, HO!NO! is the fastest ROM with moderate amount of RAM. I've tried all other ROMs like CM7, Ultimate Milestone, CM6, Cronos, MIUI... but they couldn't meet my need as HO!NO! does.
Ok it was like 2.3 works pretty smooth on the outside but gets really lag when you actully use any apps. 2.2 roms are much better but there's always a hard choice on which 2.2 is better since now most developers are focusing on 2.3

This is true! i try all and HO!NO! is the best!
Regards,
I am currently using CM9 RC0 (built from source myself) and must say, despite the very early status I like it even better than the excellent CM7.1! It still has a few issues (e.g. keyboard backlight and camera don't work, though I think there is a fix for the former), however, overall, it feels much smoother to me. As always with our old Milestones, the biggest issue is memory... When limiting background apps to two, I have very little issues with that anymore.
Keep in mind though that this ROM is not intended for daily use, so you need to be as crazy as I am (remember, no camera)
can i use the HO!NO! in my Motorola Droid A855?
i recommend HO!NO! for milestone.. it works smooth and fast.. of course it comes with a great battery life

Not unless he's made a Droid version as well. Milestone and Droid ROMS are not interchangeable.
Thanks Guys!!!
Thanks a lot guys for your suggestions. i tried most of the ROMs but found Ho! No! to be the fastest. Even at 600 MHz the ROM is quite fast and smooth.
In fact I have been having a small problem with Ho! No! ROM. I am in India on AIRTEL 3G. Whenever I switch to 2G Network I tend to loose signal and after sometime the signal gets completely lost. If I remain in 3G only everything works fine but battery usage is obviously more. Moreover, recently after HO! NO! CM 7.1.3 I am not getting 3G speeds while internet browsing while being on 3G network.
Do I need to change my radio according to India (where to find the same and how to do it?)
I didn't have any such problems on CM 7!!!

It's definitely better then CM7, and probably better then many other roms out there. At least try it out.

Try tOnecosmic's ICS Port!!!
It is amazing, good battery life, very smooth, works great as my daily Rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1398223
I DON'T recommend going to ICS just yet (unless you want to beta test), builds are still too early, they are unreliable for everyday use and it'll be a while until we get a stable and good performing rom, CM7 is much better right now, but it may change in the future though.
ICS launcher FC a lot, gallery app and browser are laggy, and if you use live wallpapers everything slows down a lot, also there are many app incompatibilities now. I tried to like ICS but it's still in alpha stages (don't believe all those RC1 or beta labels, it's really not ready)
CM7 is great but yes, it's a battery hog. You could use a samsung rom (a custom ODEXED rom or stock are fine) and a custom kernel, I use semaphore with thunderbolt and it's very good performing, it can't touch CM7 in RAM management (isn't as good in multitasking), but videos, games play nice and samsung has a few good apps (it's dialer has smart dialing and its a looker, it can play almost all videos even h264 720p 60fps, music app uses very little battery since it's HW accelerated and its browser is as smooth as the iphone's, it can't be touched by CM7's), and you can delete all other samsung bloatware.

Thanks for your reply !! , i used to be on almost every new ROM lately but i couldn't handle the Lag even with using Thunderbolt and stuff , it was veryyy laggy and not responsive , iam now on CM7.1 and i have to say it is waaaaaay faster than the sammy build roms , too bad i get some force closes often and i HATE how low the music is , the music player sucks alot of battery though
my best Samsung experience was on Hybrid roms , stable , fast.
btw not all CM9 builds are bad ! you can try search for the AndroidSoul's review of cm9 , it looks veryyyyy smooth !
any recommendations for now ?

Thanks so much man ! i have seen some videos for the onecosmic's port and it is veryy fast indeed !!!!
i wonder how long do you last with heavy usage / medium usage ?
what about standby ?? , iam so going to try this soon !
With heavy usage I can use my Phone one day, but this was the same with Gingerbread.
When I only have low or medium usage, the battery lasts 1 1/2 - 2 Days, very good for a non final release. But most i charge my phone every night.

I didn't watch any videos, I flashed both versions myself and ICS isn't ready yet, got too many FC, lags heavily on some occasions and isn't as fast as CM7 (we're talking about the version for the i9000 right? )
It'll reach great performance levels in the future I'm sure, but saying that it's perfect for daily use or better than CM7 is just going a little too far.
And have you tried a high LMK for sammy roms? Like 80MB or higher, you won't be able to multitask much, but performance will be very good for games or heavy apps

I guess iam going to skip flashing CM9 then ! , iam an average-heavy user
- well , i have never tried messing up with memory but i assure you i have had troubles multitasking , and very very very bad response time on almost any sammy rom , even with overclocking i don't really feel any difference
all what i used to flash on sammy roms was base rom + custom rom on top of it + some tweaks like thunderbolt script , overclocking wasn't even noticed
i also used to tweak the colors
Hi Folks, I'm currently running JW4 on Semaphore 2.7.4bmfr, bloatware removed, custom theme, UOT icons and effects, various hacks. This Rom is very fast (no lags), fast accurate GPS, I can multitask due to lots of free memory, everything simply works, it never, ever has SOD's or FC's. It looks good and has great battery life.
I'm been considering upgrading to ICS and have been reviewing all of the ROM's. I've discovered that all ICS Roms all seem to have many issues, and to get to this hassled state, requires lots of flashing, wipes and rewipes.
Hmmmm, my (genuine) question is, why should I upgrade to ICS? What does ICS provide over my current fast, stable, long lasting ROM?
It has to be something more than the way it looks (I mean the OS only exists to run your applications) Guess you might say, just try it and you'll see (which means you have no solid reply, it also means I have to spend hours and hours flashing one or more ICS Rom's before deciding, Damn! I need to go back to JW4 as ICS is too slow/buggy/dodgy battery etc. Hence the reason for this question.
Very good question, i've been wondering the same myself as i'm still running cm7.

You should stay on GB . To be honest, I only stay on ICS, because my titanium backups don't work on GB. But I think the difference isn't big.

I guess it strongly depends on your favors and focus. I'm using ICS since the first days of onecosmics and teamhacksungs ICS roms. ICS has a bunch of goodies and gimmicks but nothing for that you'd say: You can't use a smartphone without it!.
You're not wrong by still using GB, definetly not!

I get at least 24 hours usage with ICS. Switching isn't too much hassle, backup with titanium, do a nandroid in CWM, wipe, install ics rom, boot, restore titanium backups.
If anything goes wrong or you want to go back: flash stock JW5, flash kernel with recovery, restore nandroid.

Im comparing Slim ICS with Darky 10.4.2
With ICS you get better UI experiences.. Smooth and fast..
Browsing is much, much better..
Easy customizable toggles
Easy screenshot
What I dont like:
Camera sucks(less features), cant silent
Battery drains faster
1 lockscreen
Cant join contacts
When ppl call in, picture gets truncated
Default Gallery cant play my AVI files
I will try other ICS roms and decide whether to stick with ICS..
Sure you can join contacts use contapps! I find it the best to sync and join contacts.
+ it has free sms to other contapps users

You don't know what you are saying.
I already used several releases of ICS (AOKP, AOSP, DK, MIUI) and the camera is great and you can silent. About drains, it happen, but depend the type of use. Why you need a different lockscreen? You can join contacts, i already done that. About contact pic, there is another method to override that, it calls HaxSync, by default google don't store high-res pic in contacts.
I'll stay on stock XXJW4.. Satisfies my needs and camera is awesome xD. And I can play several HD games that won't run on ICS

Both have qualities and lacks... with GB and its roms come a superb battery-life, ICS lets you reach evening with a (not much) strong use, but nothing more.
I upgraded to ICS for curiosity, and the only thing i miss is ofc that feature. Wouldn't ever return to GB though: the rest is better on ICS, from UI to browsing
I could never think of going back to a GB rom...
First, with ICS, I finally have that feeling of maturity that the OS wasn't able to provide with previous release.
Second, hardware acceleration alone is worth the switch IMHO.
Third, RFS on Samsung's roms... can't stand it's performance degradation over time and lagfixes are just like Band-aid on an open fracture.
Fourth, kernel devs have pretty much all moved to developping ICS versions of their kernel leaving GB versions to lag behind.
Yes there are a few glitches here and there, but nothing that can prevent me from doing whatever I used to do on Eclair/Froyo/Gingerbread.
The biggest issue with ICS is with deep idle and that's only if you use your phone to listen to music... which is not my case. But then again, if you take some time to read carefully, it is possible to make work quite easilly.
As for the camera thing... you need to compare apples to apples!
As far as I can tell, the camera app used in each and every ICS builds out there is the AOSP camera whereas the camera app in Eclair/Froyo/Gingerbread roms is the one developped by Samsung... not the AOSP one.
Finally, with respect to battery life, i'm using team ICSSGS RC4.2 with Semaphore 1.0.0s kernel and, really, I can't really see any difference. I get the usual 24-30h of battery life I always had before.
There is a lot of truth in many of the posts for and against GB/ICS. I was extremely happy with Darky's ROM, but after seeing the amount of devs playing with ICS I finally took the plunge. ICS I have to say has not been smooth. Many things work well as has been mentioned already e.g. smooth UI etc. But for me few of the many ICS variants work 100% compared to the stabilty of DRom 10.4.2 or JW4 with Semaphore.
My vote for the best ICS variants are Slim ICS as it is stripped down and works and EXTRAOrdinary ICS which is an AOSP. However even with these, the battery life is not as good I have found with GB. Also using a bluetooth car receiver somehow keeps on FC ICS.
I believe the Semaphore Kernel is still the best although I am now trying Icy Glitch.

Hi Guys,
I tried a lot of roms for the I9000. CM10, MiUI ... etc etc. I love both of them and i really appreciate the smoothness of JB.
However I have a big issue: Random Reboots !.
I constantly get these reboots (twice a day at least). Then I'm forced to unlock my pin and usally my battery indicator goes nuts like from 90% before to 6%..
It drives me mad, because most of the time I don't notice my phone rebooting in my pocket. This time I'm not reachable and my phone is useless to me.
Can someone recommend a more stable ROM ? Should i go back to Samsung Stock ? Oh my I hate lag and old Android OS.

Depends on what you prefer GB, MIUI, CM
I like GB and using Saurom v2, v3 is on the way soon as is really stable and can tweak it
Can't be helped. Even budget grade phones nowadays have duo core CPUs. If you want your phone to be completely smooth, you are stuck with GB. Ficeto Base Roms are pretty stable, but lag features that you would normally find in custom roms (it's called a base rom for a reason). Darky Roms are quite stable too, but it can lag heavily in 3D games during explosion scenes.
You don't have to use GB. I'm on SlimBean 3.1, it's stable, smooth and the performance is great. (Live OC 114, I/0 = Noop, Smooth UI)
Mackay 1.6.3 is fine in regard of smoothness and battery consumption. Try it out
