Sprint ordered me a replacement Hero. On my current old hero, I have everything setup just the way I like it. Can I root my new Hero, then insert my old SD card and restore the backup from the old hero to the new hero? Any adverse effects to this? The phone number will be the same but obviously the serial numbers will be different. Thanks!
Imo just load the same recovery and give it a shot. Worse case you will just have to start fresh. I think you might be good. But I'm not 100% sure.
Just don't forget to make a nand of your stock rom. Hope this helps.

I didn't think about that, I can always nandroid a copy of OEM prior to restoring a backup from another phone. Sounds good I will give that a shot and report back in a few days to let you know how it went. Thanks!
ive transferred my back ups from my computer to my sd card and it worked fine as long as your using the same recovery u should be good. i always keep my back ups backed up on my pc lol.
Nandroid restore (in recovery) is device specific. Not heroc specific either, like, it's THAT device. Now what you could do, and this would be genius. Root and S off your new hero. Open up your nandroid and put the images into a HERCIMG.zip. The images you would want would be boot.img, system.img, data.img (rename to userdata.img), cache.img, and .android_secure.img. Thats all of them, leave out recovery etc. Obviously make a nandroid first of your newly rooted and recovered stock just in case. You would need to also boot into recovery and do other tweaks like fr if you use it, and maybe fix permissions just in case. I am kinda excited to see if this would work.
I know this sounds confusing but I'd love to help, also it would be WAY faster than starting over.
Please please try this and report back. Not only would it work, but to put this out in public forum would pwn.

Ok I'll give this a shot. Just to clarify:
1. I need to select all 5 images: boot.img, system.img, data.img, cache.img, and .android_secure.img and put all 5 images into one folder. Then zip the folder and name it HERCIMG.zip and use bootloader to install it, right? Or do they each have to be done in their own HERCIMG zip and done individually?
2. I need to rename current data.img to userdata.img - why? Just curious.
3. Easiest way to root again? It's been a long time since I rooted this phone. I have an apk called heroroot.apk, still good?

1. No folder, just the 5 images AND a file android-info.txt, zipped together.
2. Thats the way the bootloader reads the data image, recovery reads it different.
3. I've never unrooted. I hear good things about z4 and one click (linked in my thread).
Keep asking if you need, this should be fun. Also if you can't find android-info.txt I can link you one in my db. nvm, here it is http://db.tt/J5IHy5h
Edit: after you root and get a recovery, make sure you nand backup first. I used regaws s off, which is forever btw. You could also s off with darchs, but then I think you'd need to fastboot the images one by one. Or maybe it can hboot flash too?
1. Rooted using one click app in XDA forum
2. Nandroid back up
3. S-Off'ed using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=759955
4. Used old Hero's backup images to make new HERCIMG.zip. Placed on root
5. Rebooted to HBOOT. Recognized the HERCIMG.zip and attempted to load. This is where it gets stuck. Does not prompt me to click action button to install, just reverts back to the HBOOT menu screen to select fastboot, recovery, etc. I packaged the HERCIMG just like stated above... What gives?!
Try them individually ? In order. Boot system data cache android secure. You used the .txt? Wiped first? So you have clockwork too?
Edit: any other member feels comfortable/knowledgeable enough to speak up, please do.

YOU CAN DEFINITELY DO THAT!
I have Two Different Sprint Hero phones and I'm Constantly Restoring one phones Backup to the Next! It'll Definitely Work... The Only thing is, is that Only One of my phones is actually Activated through Sprint! Meaning that although the Backup Does Restore from phone to phone, I'm Not 100% Sure about making phone calls? But I Don't see why it Wouldn't?
Good-Luck!

Try just flashing the same recovery and radio you were using when you made the backup. If you were s-off then load the same method you used when you made the backup. Place the nand you made with your previous phone into your nandroid folder then boot into recovery via power + home, do a full wipe and see how it goes. If you were using firerats then I'd recommend setting it up first before you restore it if not the just give it a shot.

So what happened? What did you do? Please update...
I spent 2 hours that day trying to get it to work by making sure I had the proper files in the HERCIMG.zip. It still never recognized it =(
Restoring another nandroid backup from my old hero DID work though. Everything transferred over fine and works properly. I am more than happy to try the HERCIMG path again, but I can't get it to recognize/load the zip!!
Sweet I didnt know you could do that. No worries on the zip. I know it works, after all, thats what an RUU is anyway, just a rom for hboot. Thanks for trying

I have a Milestone which I rooted last week. I am from Romania.
I have overclocked it and it ran smoothly. Yesterday I was playing with the governors modfying files inside the system.
I renamed the mot_boot_mode file under system/bin in mot_boot_mode.bin and added another mot_boot_mode that had these first lines inside it "#!/system/bin/sh
export PATH=/system/bin:$PATH
#run the original binary
mot_boot_mode.bin"
I rebooted and got stuck into the M loop.
What can I do? Please help me!

If you can't access recovery, then go into fastboot and reflash a sbf.
You likely did not set proper permissions for the new script.
This is not serious trouble, don't worry. If you are rooted I assume you have vulnerable recovery flashed in. Boot in openrecovery and fix the mess over adb or directly from the phone. If you are totally lost, either restore your nandroid backup (you did it right? ). Altternatively reflash the whole SBF as poster above suggested.
i didnt have a vulnerable recovery flashed in...nor a nandroid backup...but i have followed the "back to stock" thread and flashed an original sbf...I set the right permission for the file before rebooting...cant figure out what was wrong... none the less i had a titanium backup done 2 days ago which worked like a charm....
Please advise me guys into doing a nandroid backup and flashing a vulnerable recovery
Sent from my Milestone using XDA App
What advise do you need? There is an in depth instruction on top.
However, it is not very complicated, i can tell since I'm into this about 1 month and succeeded with a minimum or even less amount of knowhow.
The vulnerable recovery is working for all boot loader versions and does allow to access the update.zip.
You'll need either RSD Lite or sb_reflash, depending on your OS. So boot into bootloader mode (holding up the d-pad on start), apply the vulnerable recovery sbf and fire up your update.zip once thee flashing is done. (assuming you have followed the instructions on how to prepare your sdcard for OpenRecovery, eg. the G.O.T distro requires a differnt structure)
If you get a checksumm error, check out the log files and modify the file, or use a script to recalculate the checksum. But this is rarely the case.
Ohh.. and talking about "original sbf", you might want to read the difference between Service and "normal"

Whats the difference?
By the way...I didnt had to prepare the sd card in a special way or something...Nor to format it in a particular way...It was pretty easy the whole process though...
Now I have switched to GOT 2.2.1 Froyo with CM6 mod but I'm very dissapointed on the battery life... Think I'm gonna try other 2.2 Roms with 2.1 kernel...
Thanks for your reply!
Know what I observed in my case? Installing the 2.2.1 firmware with no "got-fix" and no root makes my battery last very long

You get the G.O.T 2.01 OpenRecovery Version along with the Firmware files.
Usually one supposed to boot into recovery and apply some mods, the first one would be fix 2.2.1 issues... and so on.
I was lazy and didn't, but simply flashed the Firmware. And to my surprise the battery was lasting longer.
But you know, I can't tell if it's depending on the Distro or whatever. Hovewer, I'm not that of a version junkie, rather looking for a decent distribution, and luckily i found one. Even if it was 2.0 it would have been cool for me. Now 2.3 resp. 3.0 is around the corner, then the whole race starts again...

Btw... they announced froyo for next week for the milestone in this forum.. so we hopefully will all be fine, if not, we will still have to deal with the fact that Android is very nice, but not yet rock solid

Yes... I never applied those fixes too... Still the battery last very little time...
As an example:
Before I went to sleep last night the battery was fully charged...no apps running...3g disabled...everything disabled...phone idle for 7 hours...and when I woke up and check... I got 60% of the battery...
Thats frustrating...
I must admit I have the Cyanogenmod running...Would this be the issue?
Is there a way to remove your recovery in ADB when youre not rooted?
I did it, but i had to clash CWM 3.0.2.4 and format recovery, then when it rebooted. i did adb reboot recovery, it went to fastboot (which makes sense)
then i entered fastboot erase recovery. which might have been pointless but still did.
But my question is if i can erase my recovery through ADB when im rooted or even unrooted?

I have no idea if you can adb remove recovery.img or not, you probably could though. You would have to have r/w access to it's mtdblock. Even so, it sounds like you got it. You can always RUU which removes recovery as well. If you are really "unrooted" you wouldn't have a recovery to remove fyi. Also, most adb codes only work with r/w access to your /system partition, so unrooted would likely kill off adb, for what it's intended to do anyway. I am curious though, why do you ask/want to do this?

Well here was my story, i wanted to go to Sprint to get a new hero cause my hardware was a little bit sticky/not working right, like the volume rocker and call button. So i unrooted with z4 (thats how i rooted). I double checked to see if i had root or busybox. through root checker in the Market. So i made my marry way over there, and these guys have all there phones rooted so they know what they are doing and if it might be rooted. he couldnt find the # or busybox, but he found my recovery img, by going into it manually. AND I WAS SCREWED. haha. so apparently z4 doesnt remove the recovery. To my knowledge thats the only way he found out i had prior root, and it took him bout 20 min to figure that out, so i thought i did a good job, except for having the recovery img

So what you really needed to do was run the Rom Update Utility to get back to the stock recovery image, not erase the recovery image.

Hi there, I've read most of the posts on how to root and then install a custom rom on it, but I truly can't get my head around the whole thing and get confused with stuff. I'd appreciate if someone could help me out with a little guide on how to do it, one of the things I can't wrap my head around that much and the reason why I'm making this thread is because I do not know how to make a system backup (whatever it's called) in case I want to go back to stock, I also read that I need a modem and that I should keep a backup of my stock original modem but don't know how to do such thing, I know some ROMs come with a preloaded modem but if such modem were not to work with my phone I read I could just flash a new modem but I also don't know how to do that. I apologize for the noob question, and hope this thread doesn't get deleted without any help, thanks.

2. There's a sticky in this forum with EVERYTHING you need to know. Backups can be made with Titainium Backup or a custom recovery. To use Titanium Backup, you need to root your phone, which there are several threads detailing such. If you don't have access to the USB data function on your phone, there's another way to root without a computer that's currently being tested.

Thanks! do you happen to know how to back up things such as the modem? I've tried searching for such thing here or google to no help.
you can use root explorer or xplorer to copy the files and folders to your sd card. If you copy them back to restore them, you should do a chmod 755 on the files to make sure they are accessible, executable. xplorer lets you do that.
you want to copy, at least,
/efs
/radio
the radio folder contains modem

Thanks a lot! and sorry ust a few more questions.
-do I need to backup anything else so that I could go back to stock if needed?
-is this the way to go back to stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1300843 ?
-if the modem that comes with the ROM doesn't work for me, could I use the backup original stock modem on the rom?
-and basically to go through with the whole process 1-root 2-flash 3-install rom? if this is correct please let me know if I've got the right links for them:

-to go back to stock, you don't need anything backed up. Simply need Odin.
-yes, in the 3rd post (by 4-2ndtwin). Odin KK4 without bootloaders.
-there's a modem thread if the one that comes with the ROM doesn't work but changes are pretty low that it won't.
-follow this guide to a T and everything should go well: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350266
1-no, refer to the link I posted.

Appreciate it, this is really helpful and will give it a shot right after I get back from college. I'm going to root before I do the flash guide because I want to do a back up first though.
Just as a heads up, in the link Bwolf56 posted,
9. Click PDA button in Odin and find your kernel.tar file (speedmod kernel (this kernel isn't too important as it will be replaced by custom rom's kernel, but speedmod kernel understands both froyo (amend) scripting and gingerbread (edify) scripting so is great for this purpose to install any rom cwm zip file next.)

You won't be able to boot the phone after this step until you install a new rom. Since for some reason my cappy won't read the external SD card in CWM, I got kinda screwed (my USB doesn't work so I couldn't put the zip on the internal memory [which it does see]).
Shouldn't be a problem for you, but I would copy it over to the internal memory as well before flashing, just in case
Never hurts to be too careful!

You can't flash a kernel.tar in recovery - it has to be a .zip. Therefor, having it on your sd won't change much.
When flashing Speedmod, your phone should be able to fully boot up but you don't need it to. You simply want to get in recovery to flash the ROM you want to use.
*As a alternative to Speedmod, you can flash Corn Kernel which is made specifically for GB (while Speedmod was made for Froyo). Both works though.

Not what I meant, I was referring to having the .zip on your internal as well. I was going about it a different way anyways, since my USB doesn't work. Had to root on the device, then used mobile odin. But like I said, I forgot to copy the .zip ROM onto the internal.
EDIT: Didn't mean the kernel, was talking about the ROM. Kernel installed fine, but like I say below it just hangs at the Samsung screen after the AT&T Logo. Sorry, I'm at work and not feeling the best right now.
I've never been able to fully boot up since, it just hangs on the Samsung IGH-897 or w/e screen. Tried wipe data etc as well. Still refuses to boot past that screen.

Ah now that makes more sense. Yes, go ahead and have the ROM's .zip on your sd as well as their respective Gapps. That will save you some hassle afterwards.

On a side note, I'd rather not steal the OP's thread with another issue but pm me if you need further help with your phone. I think I remember 4-2ndtwin trying to help you but I guess it didn't work?

Yes, sorry about the thread hijack . I appreciate it, thank you . He did but I'm still not having any luck. Worst comes to worst, I figure buying a new one (since mine had some other issues anyway), and using the one I currently have for spare parts.
Again, sorry about the thread hijack OP!
I appreciate both of your input, and don't worry about the thread hijack, I hope BWolf is able to help you out Xone.
So should I go through with the guide you posted BWolf or should I do that plus keep the ROM on my SD before hand?

Thank you. Unfortunately I couldn't even go through with the root, that SuperOneClick thing did not work for me, already tried some solutions from here http://theunlockr.com/2010/10/11/how-to-root-your-android-phone-superoneclick-method/ including going as far as doing this solution http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/06/how-to-set-up-adb-usb-drivers-for-android-devices/ and it didn't work, still get stuck on Shell rooting device Step#7 wait for device.
Is there a different program that actually works or method that I could use to do the root?
Edit: nvm rooted with this guide http://androidforums.com/captivate-all-things-root/483646-guide-root-official-2-3-5-guide.html

So, vol up+vol down+power button doesn't get you in recovery?
Also, did you flash it twice? First time it needs to repartition, so 2 flashes are needed.

Edit: phone is not working, how can I put back the stock modem to make it work?
I could really use your help guys. I'm trying to get back to stock so I can get the updates being pushed by HTC/Rogers. There are a couple bugs that are really annoying me. So, before i tell you what I need, here's what I have.
M7_ul
Locked Bootloader - was relocked after unlocking a while ago
Rooted
CWM recovery
Stock HTC ROM
S-OFF
Baseband 4a.14.3250.14
Main 1.29.631.4
Modelid: PN0712000
CID: Roger001
Now, what I need is either the RUU or the stock recovery files and some sort of guide on how to install them. I've tried downloading from here: http://www.htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads/P60 but i can't flash it via CWM. I've also tried downloading and RUU from here: http://bugsylawson.com/files/file/1...5013-1033115001-release-312087-signed-2-4zip/ but when i unzip i get corrupt files and i can't move it to the phone.
I'm at a complete loss here. I would really appreciate any guidance you guys can provide. Any idea where I can get the proper RUU and how I can install it? Or if it's easier to just get the stock recovery, any idea where I can get it and how to install it using CWM or another method such as terminal emulator?
no need to relock bootloader is s-off'd
easiest way, IF there is an ruu or ruu zip for the rogers variant (you would need the ruu files that match 1.29.631.4) floating around i suggest this...back up sd card contents, boot into recovery...wipe the system, reboot into bootloader connect device via fastboot, run the ruu..one it boots except the ota
done
but how do i run the RUU and how do I know which exactly is the right RUU for me? I've heard RUUs are exe files but i haven't found any that are. The one I think is right for me is a zip and it seems to be corrupt though I dled the 1gb file twice. So i'm a bit confused.

Ugh. Thanks cue_32. I had just downloaded that file when I saw your post, so I was very hopeful this would work. Pushed it to my phone, tried installing via CWM but almost immediately it said installation aborted. I have no idea what's going on. Nothing seems to be installable. WTF? And the link you posted for the stock recovery doesn't seem to lead to anywhere that has a recovery file for DL. So, I'm totally stuck now. UGH. Been on this for almost 2 days now. Haven't run into this much trouble with any of my previous phones, despite trying out almost a dozen different ROMs. Here, I'm just trying to revert to stock recovery and RUU and can't even do that. Sigh. I just don't get why none of the RUUs are installable.

There's no RUU available yet for Rogers so I personally wouldn't try any other RUU.
So you downloaded the Nandroid backup from Whamboush (or whatever the name was), you extracted and moved the EXTRACTED FOLDER to the proper location (Clockwork>Backup) and updated the permissions correct? I used Root Browser to do this, the permission should be exactly like your other CWM backups. If I recall correctly there are 3 columns with 3 rows, all are X'd except for the last box on the 2nd column\3rd Row. (middle\bottom)
example:
X _ X
From there I just did the restore using the original clock work mod (non-touch cause I'm old skool)
After it successfully flashes, before it prompts you to reboot you'll be prompted to re-root from within CWM itself. Select No.
After it reboots, test to make sure everything is ok.
Then enter fastboot mode (adb reboot bootloader), from fastboot mode you can then flash the recovery.
You're welcome

Flash, unroot (if necessary) and flash stock recovery, which is what the instructions I provided, and optional lock the boot loader
So, I tried changing the permissions, which I hadn't done before, using Root Explorer but it says that some files can't be modified. So I can't set the permissions and CWM won't see those files at all, so that's not an option it seems. So I decided to just flash the recovery but when i do i get an error in adb Failed (remote: not allowed). So, that's not working either. Hehe. Every time I think i got it, something stands in the way. Will definitely feel like an accomplishment when i get this thing done finally, just not sure how or when it'll happen.

Just to be sure, the EXTRACTED FOLDER I'm referring to is the last folder before you see ALL the files of the 'ROM' like boot.img, cache.ext4.tar, recovery.img, etc...This folder is the one you want to make the permission changes to.
I had the exact same problem before and tried on ES File explorer, Astro File explorer, and Root browser (not root explorer although Im sure it works too). (I've never had to have this many installed at once) but basically this was the problem because after I extracted and updated the permission using Root browser, it worked on 1st try.
What I had done as well is make sure I was moving the extracted folder to the proper location by doing a nandroid back up first. From there I located the backup I just created and moved the extracted folder there. Once the extracted folder is in the right place, I went and used root browser and updated the permissions.
This totally worked Cue. Thank you so much. Finally managed to get the nandroid back up flashed, but then when I went to flash the recovery, i got an error: Failed (remote: not allowed). Ugh. So baby steps, but still in the right direction. So now my status is, Locked bootloader, s-off, flashed nandroid backup, but still have CWM recovery which I apparently can't seem to shake. Anyone know where I can maybe find a .zip recovery that I can try flashing via CWM? Not sure whether that's even possible, as CWM would essentially be overwriting itself but not sure what other options i have. From the research I've done so far though, it seems i can't flash a recovery with a locked bootloader. It does feel like i'm going around in circles here.

Do i really have to go through the entire unlock bootloader process to flash stock recovery? Ugh. I honestly don't get why this is so complicated. My previous phones were SOOO much simpler in comparison. This just feels like way too much trouble. I originally just wanted a rooted phone to get rid of bloatware and other small tweaks. I had no idea it would have such annoying consequences. Now, I'm just trying to get the stock ROM updated with HTC's latest bug fixes and software upgrade before i try and custom roms. I suspect it's not going to get easier though. I think once i get this finally done, i'm just going to leave the phone as is, completely stock at least until the 4.2.2 upgrade. Then after that I'll root it again. I used to love this process of rooting, installing custom roms, etc. Was fun, but this is just tedious as all hell. Hehe. Anyway, enough ranting. Ya, if anyone can tell me what my next step is, I'd be grateful.
So I just successfully rooted my lovely HTC One from Sprint. I've got TWRP 2.6.0.1 on it and all.
I'd REALLY like to get rid of all this garbage on my phone that I'm never going to use, however I also would like to keep it as close to stock as possible. I really enjoy Sense for the most part (minus quirks that I'm willing to live with, and BlinkFeed). I know how/can find out how to load a custom rom - I had CM7 on my HTC EVO 4G (1st Gen) and loved it. But I really don't want to be without Sense.
Can anyone make any suggestions as to what I should do/which rom I should use?

Sorry, I'm overwhelmed at the wealth of knowledge here. Is there a link to the specific one you're talking about? Search didn't do me a ton of good. Though I suppose I could send the guy a message and inquire about his ROM.
Thank you for all your help guys!
Okay so I've decided that I want to try the OMJ ROM. Now here's where I am unsure of exactly how to do it. I see that certain ROMs require different methods. I can't just copy the ZIP to my internal storage and use TWRP to flash it, right? It has to be more complicated than that...
Also, I just went past the return window for the phone so I really cannot afford to brick it. I assume that there's next to no chance of the aforementioned tragedy befalling me providing I stick with the mainstream ROMs?
Most roms are in a flashable format i use the CM 10.2 nightly myself. from what i can tell as long as you can get into the bootloader your safe. I wiped my whole phone SD card and everything accidentally with TWRP one time. Ended up having to use sideload to get a CM rom installed again but i was never in danger of bricking. When flashing roms always remember to do a factory reset to wipe the cache and do an advanced wipe of the data and system. after the rom is installed it will ask you to wipe the cache again which is always nice to do.

Awesome! So what was I hearing about having to plug the phone into the computer to flash the boot.IMG file? Sorry, I'm just really overwhelmed with the new ways of doing things.

No worries, I am new to the unlocking scene too with this device . Those flashable zips will normally have the boot.img files included and when installing twrp will take care of it via the script inside the zip. if you open the zip file with winzip or something you should see that file on the root. TWRP or ClockworkMod recoveries make it really easy to install and backup roms.
flashing the boot.img i guess is for recovery purposes say if the system is in a boot loop. Or maybe if you upgrade the system only and didnt change boot img between two different roms. I personally never had to do this. After unlocking the device i used fastboot to replace the recovery and just do everything else inside the recovery.

Alright, so I've got OMJ's rom running no problem. Love the new feel but what I'm wondering is...is there still a way to delete apps like Stocks and other crap I won't use? I can disable some but not all, and none am I able to uninstall completely.
Would it be something as simple as going into the OMJ ZIP file and removing the unwanted apk files and then re-flashing to that version?

I suppose that could be one way of doing it, but i dont think its necessary. if you are already rooted or can install root easy i would just install a Root file explorer. Browse to the /system/app folder i think it is and delete the APKs from there.

Yeah I tried that with ES explorer AND Root File Manager. ES would have an error, and Root File Manager would simply say it was deleted but it was never actually deleted. I think it has something to do with the security. I'm not really sure, haha! I'm used to being able to just openly delete apps from within Settings>Apps like the old days of my EVO 1st gen.
hmm interesting as long as the /system is mounted as r/w permissions you should be able to delete. well if you are planning on reflashing using the modify zip method im curious to know if that works.

use Root explorer, and set it at r/w
also Titanium Backup will delete it for you too.
If I remember correctly there are a few apps in the play store that are specifically for getting rid of "bloatware".....maybe search bloatware removal, our uninstall bloatware something like that. Hopefully this helps!

Well for whatever reason neither of those two suggestions worked. So I installed Root Browser and was finally able to get rid of some things.
Scratch that. Rebooted phone and the apps are back.

Thanks! I'm working on it now. I did not see an app called "ROM Cleaner" or "ROMCleaner" but I did find something called Rom Toolbox Lite that I'm going to attempt to use.
Will post back. I may look for the ROMCleaner on the net and just install it manually.
Edit: So I guess I showed my ignorance there. It appears ROM Cleaner is something offered through the forum. I'm unsure of how to use it so I'll take a look around.

It's very doubtful you will have success with Romtoolbox either once you reboot all the apps will return
