Thank you all! - Nook Color General

I've been lurking for a while gathering all of the info i need, so i can be prepared.
I was able to get a nook on ebay for 170 with a nice leather case, and a pack of screen protectors. basically brand new. got a 8 gig, class 4 sandisk card, and flashed CM7 stable, gapps, and the overclock module flawlessly. everything works like a charm. Nexflix works great, and pretty much any app ive put on it. some apps show small like for a phone, but otherwise its great. Just a big thanks to everyone who contributes.

Oh man, that did it! thank you! im pretty much set now.

Stumbled upon this by accident...thanks for the tip!

i am still on Manual Nooter after a couple of weeks...
I am a bit afraid to move at the moment to CM, as everything works pretty well.
In addition i dont find some instructions so clear (for an accountant!) so i am stepping back for the moment.
Of course it might be very easy to update to CM, by just putting a zip file in the update folder, but i am not risking it at the moment!

That thread is all you need to know to get CM7 running. Only takes a half hour or so.

2nd the thank you.
I second the thank you. I certainly appreciate the work done and the information provided.

I agree.
I was looking at getting a NC WAY back when people were first rooting it but luckily a techie guy I know told me to wait for CM7. So once that came out and people were raving about it I went ahead and bought one. Honestly the CM install process was a little confusing to me so I just paid someone to do it for me. But I've gotten a little more comfortable with it now since I bricked it a couple of times trying to install kernels but was able to restore through CM Recovery.
Between playing games, downloading apps, surfing the internet and reading books, I'm on my NC for probably 3 hours a day or so. I love this thing. I know I'm not even scratching the surface of what this thing can do but it works great for me.
I even donated to XDA today. Where's my star?!?!

I read the comments of the people in you tube, and now i am even more afraid to do it! So many people have problems!
Sent from my NOOKcolor using Tapatalk

I understand that feeling but keep in mind......the comments are usually from the minority of problems encountered. The vast majority of attempts were successful but you usually don't see/hear those comments! (Most problems I have had in the past rooting/modding the two NCs of mine were my own fault. Read carefully and have at it!)

Don't worry about messing up your nook, it is nearly impossible to brick, and if it does not boot then, you get the pleasure of learning how to use cwm.

Thank You All
I took the plunge this morning and decided to jump in with both feet, and am now running the custom rom Cyanogen 6.0 RC-1 recommended here. This is a blast, and nowhere as difficult as what I thought it would be (believe me though..I was sweating bullets when I hit enter )
Without all the good information here I don't think I would have ever been able to do this myself.
I don't know what to do next, but it seems like everything, including my [email protected]& red haze on my camera is gone too...I am real happy camper now
OK guys..what to do next now. What should I download and install on here since it's a clean slate.

Glad we could help -- that's why we're here
Well, don't feel like you NEED to do anything next. But I'll offer a couple general suggestions.
1) Browse around the Themes and Apps section. There are lots of cool themes, apps, mods, etc. that you could add that provide even further customization and additional functionality. Also consider browsing around the Development forum to see if you might like to try any of the other ROMs out for a bit.
2) Think of what else do YOU want your phone to be able to do? Think of some things you'd like to see out of your phone. Then start searching around here, or in the Market, and see if such an app/mod already exists or if someone here is working on it.
Basically, you don't NEED to do anything next, but just know that you can do plenty of exploring here for all kinds of stuff, and you now have the ability to customize further.

Thanks..appreciate the advise.
I did manage to download the gapps and flashed that (starting to feel pretty good ) and will check out what you suggested as well. I can't get over how much faster this phone is now and love the os typewriter over the stock one. I only made 20 mistakes with it first time typing on it instead of 200 I usually do with the stock one
I can't wait to show this puppy off tonight at work to the Evo boys...I'm going to have a nice laugh back at them when they see it now, since a bunch of them were putting my "putzy" little Hero down last night. That really was one hell of a motivating factor for me to do this BTW I would love to get that matrix type start up screen on this today...if I can keep me eyes open long enough..(graveyard shift) especially if it will work right, that aught to blow their little minds ehh..

Couple easy things would be to download a new ADW Launcher theme (just type that into the market search box) and then you can look at other themes. BlackMod and Dark envy are my favorites.

Well..since it was my very first time doing any of this, about 1-1/2 -2 hours actually doing it...but about a week of reading and trying to understand it
I still don't have it down pat and am not 100% comfortable doing any of it,but if your wanting to try it sooner or later your going to have to jump in and get your feet wet too..
Yes..the Blue tooth works with my older Platronic's headset very well. That's as much as I have done with it. I don't have any of the external speakers or use it through any radio in the car..sorry.

There's nothing to really do next because everything is all user preference. I would suggest you download Titanium Backup from the market and backup all your apps+data so you don't lose anything if something goes wrong. Also, do nandroid backups prior to make modifications to your phone. What I did when I first started was just read, read, and read. There's so much to do and the members of XDA are very supportive. Welcome to our world. LOL
Step by step?
So for a newbie, can you post the step-by-step things you did to root and update your phone?
Like people say do nandroid, and I have not a clue where to get that.
Thanks,
Jim

The search feature and Google are really a good tools to use here and on the web.You will be pleasantly surprised at all of the information you can come up with.
Now..a step by step guide to rooting my phone..No..like I said..I am still not 100% comfortable doing this yet,and I just don't feel I am qualified enough to explain the process to you..sorry
I will give you some good advise though..RESEARCH RESEARCH..and then RESEARCH what you are wanting to do to your phone..before you do anything at all. I spent a whole bunch of hours reading everything from here and elsewhere just trying to get a good idea of what to do before doing anything..and you should too.
1) Figure out what exactly you want from your phone and decide then before you do anything.
2) Take a look at all of the different Rom's that are available and what each offer you, and while your looking at them and reading about them you should be looking at all of the issues each have and decide if you can live with them before you do anything.
3) Use the search feature here and Google. You'll have hundreds of hours of reading at your finger tips to digest. Sure..you'll have more questions then answers right off the bat,but keeping researching and you will most likely find enough stuff to help you understand the process enough to jump in eventually.
It really isn't difficult to root you phone anymore nor is it difficult to do a nandroid back up but you need to put forth some effort to have a basic understanding of what you are wanting to do and what all the terminology means.. Sorry if this sounds condescending to you, I'm not trying to be in any way, but this is just some friendly advise from one newbie to another.
4) Once you got a good idea of what you would like to try,and a basic idea of what the terminology means, then get comfortable hooking your phone up to the computer and see what happens on it.Look up here or elsewhere what it means to do a nandroid back up..and also backing up a sd card to your computer..Look at what it means to wipe the data and making a partition on your sd card. Once your familiar with all of this...then go look at the universal 1 click method to root your phone and then also look at the guide to rooting your phone via the a terminal that is posted on this forum and what has been said about both of them. See what your comfortable with. Now once you done all of this.. go look the instructions each of the chef's give with their Roms, and see if it starts making sense to you or not. You will need to follow these instructions word for word to make it work right the first time you try this....same for using the long way to root via a terminal too..
If you do your homework and still can't figure out what it all means..then in all reality you really shouldn't try it..at least not till you at least understand it..This is how I did it..and my suggestion to you is to do the same. I know the terminology is strange and it may seem overwhelming at first..but if you spend enough time researching it,it will help you in the long run.

I was just like you...sweating over taking the plunge. But once I put my toes in the water, it was all in all the way!
I started with CM6 RC1...after a couple weeks, I flashed CM nightly 9/7 and saw improvement. Just yesterday I flashed Darc's #14 kernel. AWESOME... more speed....more zippiness. I LOVE my Hero
Don't load up a bunch of crap. You don't need task killers and such. I did pop #2 for SetCPU and run my Hero very nicely at 729mhz. Can you say "zing"?

[SOLVED] Black GTALK

Hello everybody ...
Cud someone please give me a stepwise breakdown on if/how I could get gtalk to have a black theme
(or give me a link to a black gtalk apk that I could use to replace the stock one ) ?
I did search before posting this thread.. and found this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821214
but that OP's just stating tht the gtalk app inside another ROM is black in color.
I'm sure this has been asked / done before, and if it has, please don't hammer me...
It's just that I am new to android, and some of the google results i got for 'black gtalk app' said some scary sounding things like deodexed (?)
And - I haven't rooted my Nexus S yet (yes, i know.. i'm a bit scared still.. )
Help please?
All you had to do is go to the second page.
On the second page of that thread posted by Jack_R1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821214&page=2
(Unsure if it works on Gingerbread)
And you'll most likely need Root for this to work since google talk is a .apk within /system/app/
/system/app/ cannot be modified unless you're rooted.
Rooting is relatively simple on Nexus S, don't be scared

Haha okay. But if you don't want to wait for your "friend" to do it for you, here's a guide here to get you started towards rooting.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545
It's relatively simple
Yes- thanx again! I've read through those a few times and all the positive responses from 'first timers' have been tempting me a lot.
I'm actually waiting for the phone to launch officially in Dubai (rumored to happen in the week after next), and then I think I'll become a bit more brave to fiddle with it..
but if i muster enough courage before that, I'll definitely follow that guide ..
(psst: please be on standby with some emergency XDA paramedics, in case you hear me yelping, after a not so successful rooting attempt )

You have any idea if it's going to be a I9020 or I9023? There's reports of I9023 rooting of not completely working. Something about cache partition, I'm sure it'll get fixed.

I'm inclined to think it'll be the Super Clear LCD one .. because the Dubai/UAE market seems to be like a Singapore-market follower .. and the SLCD version has just been announced there..
The SAMOLED is partly why I'm happy that I went through some bit of trouble (and a LOT of worrying) to get my NexS delivered safely from Austin..
But boy am I in love with it!
I dont think anyone's been able to pry it out of my hands since it landed (touchwood)
And, like you said... I'm sure the i9023 would get rooted soon enough by folks here
[maybe Google could just officially link to the XDA as their main 'user support forum' .. ]
I was able to push the gtalk and the google voice to the Nexus S. I have it installed on the nightly cm7 #26. The google voice is working but the gtalk is failing to connect to the server.
i was able to install but it hangs on a black screen where my contacts should be but nothing displays. theres also the refresh circle in the top right that keeps going. then if i selct anything via menu button push and go back it force closes on me.
Can someone tell me why is it marked as SOLVED when it does not work on the nexus S? I want this feature badly, if anyone has any idea pls share.

I'm running CM7 (Tablet tweaks was merged to CM7 not long ago) on Emmc along with 1.2 on the dual-boot partition. I think it's the best of both worlds. The only real negative being that it's a little more complicated to update the dual boot partition ROM. You need a modified .zip for the dual boot partition so you don't end up overwriting your primary boot by accident. By putting the stock 1.2 on the dual boot partition, I am now able to flash any ROM update when I feel like it without hunting for a modified dual boot .zip. I would recommend this setup.
As for instructions, look in the development section for the dual boot thread. The original post should be what you're looking for.
Thanks, but why do you want to dual-boot? Is there something not working or missing in the CM7 version that you need to have the other for?
Also, does Bluetooth work these days? I've read here where its only good for 6", or so, which is useless, but that it works for 30' for tethering. I want to use BT headphones. This is an important part of my decision to either stay with the Nook or trade up to something like the new Samsungs coming out.
Personally, I'd like to try the painful process of unrooting, loading 1.2, re-rooting, and loading CM7 into the emmc - not as a dual partition, though. And then put all my stuff back on. I'm looking for good directions on that, but it's tough to find, or at least it was last I looked. I was thinking of waiting for an autonooter to show up, but it's taking longer than I htought it would. The manual way looks iffy to me. Lots of variables.
Thanks again!

Goodbye Nooksters!

I've had a lot of fun with my Nook, and have made all my friends envious. But the thing that dampened my enthusiasm is the poor battery life. I am running CM7 off of a micro SD card, and I swear, I have to fully charge this thing every other day ... and that's with minimal usage.
I also found the screen size kind of tiring for any lengthy forays to the Internet, and was constantly hitting the wrong links on pages because the text type is so small (yes, I did frequently zoom in when I had to).
Well, I've been sitting on the fence about buying a 10-inch Honeycomb tablet, and doing a lot of research in the meanwhile.
But today I got the push I needed when I opened up my email and received a $100-off coupon for any tablet at Staples. So, I hopped in my car and picked myself up a shiny new Samsung Galaxy 10.1. Have only played with it for a few minutes and it's a lot different than my Nook, so I've got some learning to do.
Meanwhile, my girlfriend is going to be pretty excited when she finds out I am giving her my NC. She's been bugging me for one ever since I got mine. But I may take the SD card out and let her use it stock. She's still have Internet and email access, but the battery life should be a lot better.
Thanks to everyone on these boards who have helped me with my questions.
Everyone has their own preference on screen size (7" is perfect for my needs, 10.1" would annoy the hell out of me), but if you expect better battery life with another device...well, good luck with that. =)
Rodney
1. compare the Galaxy to the NC is apple to pineapple.
2. 10" is bigger than 7" for sure but the trade off is the weight. Can't use it to read when laying out bed
3. Imaging if the NC has $100 off, B&N will burn their stockroom quick.
Anyway, enjoy your Honeycomb tablet.
Oh, btw, I personally think you g/f will jump up/down asking you to give her the Galaxy
You had a good run. Good luck! Personally, 7" is about right for me for something I commute with. Battery life has been fine but I have CM7 on the eMMC so perhaps that makes a difference.
You've probably heard it before, but if you're still using the last stable version, cm 7.0.3, update (for your gf ) to the 7.1 RC1 or Nightly 136. With deep sleep fixed, I've gotten as much as six days of light use out of my NC.
If you're using verygreen's SD image, you'll need an update for that, too, toward the bottom of his OP in that thread.
I'll never understand the point of people that put up threads saying they've decided to with another product.
Fine, the Nook didn't work out for you and you found something better for your tablet needs. But honestly why do I care? I just don't get it.

2. 10" is bigger than 7" for sure but the trade off is the weight. Can't use it to read when laying out bed
3. Imaging if the NC has $100 off, B&N will burn their stockroom quick.
Anyway, enjoy your Honeycomb tablet.

Thank you, I hope to. Yes, I understand that no tablet is going to be all things to all people. I'm sure my gf will love the NC.

You had a good run. Good luck! Personally, 7" is about right for me for something I commute with. Battery life has been fine but I have CM7 on the eMMC so perhaps that makes a difference.

Thank you. My days with the NC are not over ... I'm sure my gf will be asking for my assistance on a regular basis.

If you'll be sticking with CM7, do her a favor and put the latest nightly on it. Dalingrin's OC kernel is included now and deep sleep has been fixed since the last stable release.
Nook's size is perfect for me. Battery life hasn't been a problem. The only thing missing for me (and I really mean the only thing, since I'm not looking for a tablet as a laptop replacement) is a means to make Skype calls. We're close with the partially functioning usb, but not there yet.

I also found the screen size kind of tiring for any lengthy forays to the Internet, and was constantly hitting the wrong links on pages because the text type is so small (yes, I did frequently zoom in when I had to)

Bumping up the resolution to 200 or 220 will fix these problems. I'd do this before giving a Nook to anyone. There is a free app in the Market called LCD Density that will do this temporarily. To change the resolution permanently is only a small modification of the build.prop file. EX File Explorer, also free in the Market, will allow you to do that. There are many threads on XDA that will tell you how.

Dalingrin's OC kernel was rolled in as of n132 - all subsequent builds have it, including n138.
FWIW, my battery life is every bit as good with the latest nightlies as stock, if not better.

Wait, why wouldn't the people who put out the various roms already account for that? MIUI 1.7.15.1 is set to 240.

you should have waited few months and spend same money for quad core ICS with higher res screen. or at least wait couple months for honeycomb dual core omap 44xx like archos g9. in any event overclock the tegra2 and you're probably going to find battery life not much better than cm7 nook color. good luck to you.

Because it's a matter of preference? I have no problem with the NC's default density.
ETA: and a lot of people like a density right around 187, which makes everything a bit bigger without screwing up the status bar, widgets, layouts etc.

[Q] Stable ROM for everyday use (cam+sound+vid.accel.+wi-fi(+bluetooth))

Hello
because my Touchpad, running CM9, got slower and slower I decided to clean it and put an Update on it.
I need a stable (as possible) ROM with working camera, wi-fi, sound and video acceleration. Bluetooth would be nice but not necessary.
I don't need new apps from newer versions, etc.
It's a 32 GB Version.
Which ROM would you suggest me and where to get it+gapps?
Thanks in advance!
With kind regards
Cosy
The I would suggest that you view the development thread where you will see the different roms for this device and links to gapps or whatever else you may need will be available in the Opening Post what people want or need is down to the user. There you will be able to read individual comments about what does or doesn't work and be able to make your own informed decision.
There are numerous development threads and I don't know which to read.
In addition I can't read a thread holding 250 pages of posts just to pick a ROM.
A little hint would be nice.

Here's a hint I'm using Milaq's KK Rom and you don't need to read 250 pages just the op and the last few or more if you feel like it.
But it comes down to you making an informed decision.

I would need the same, and I dont see a reason why you guys that tried all the roms could simple write down a version thats stable and functional, I dont care if its NAdroid 4.2, or 4.3. or 4.4, I just need a functional tablet that has a functional Skype, Netflix and wifi.
Is that a big problem to write, I dont have hours and hours of time to searc (which is useless) to figure out which rom. A small baby at home, work I have everyday, and really not spare time to waste on research.
I apologize in advance if someone gets ofended, but at the time when I was a kid I would spend hours messing online, now I dont have that anymore.
On topic - my biggest issue that the tablet is draining battery like crazy, and is totally glitchy, slows down, all though everything works, but slow and battery is ridiculous.

Well if you read my post which you have quoted you'll see that I did make a recommendation but if you you're after someone to wipe your bottom and put a cookie in your mouth it won't be me. It's the arrogance of people like yourself that makes me wonder why I or anybody else bothers to try and be helpful.
Have a nice weekend I know you've p***ed me of.

No check it yourself or ask someone that you haven't insulted.
And I would be obliged if you can stop quoting me. I really don't want anything to do with you especially as you are still taking the p***.
