Battery usage with GPS navigation - LG Optimus 2x

Hi,
Went on a drive last weekend with Copilot installed and GPS active offcause.
Plugged in and charging through the cars cigarette lighter plugin and found that despite that, the phone lost power and got VERY hot..
Is that normal? I mean, if thats to be expected, the iphone is pretty much useless on long drives as navigation device...

It depends what adapter do you use. There are ones that can only provide the phone 0.5 A while you want to have 1A output. Then you'll have no problems

Using the default original LG adapter that came with my car cradle, the LG SCS-410.
Disappointing that it can't supply enough Amps...
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA Premium App

I'm using the official one, aswell, and with Navigon (GPS navigation with offline maps) and maxed-out brightness the display still gets charged with around 140mA surplus or something around that value.

Does it take an app to check how much mA the battery is charging?
I just had a look at the standard charger that came with the cradle and it's 0,7A..
Copilot uses offline maps as well, and brightness was at middle strenght, so not even fully lid.

Extended batteries?

Are there any yet for the Galaxy Tab?
having batt life issues? its been a champ so far for me.
Isn't 4Ah enough ??
PS: yes, the iPad has twice the battery capacity, but its display is twice the size, it's twice the weight, and there's twice as much room inside the device to throw-in a few more mAh
Getting the tab apart for battery access is quite a trick. I dont belive its something the average user is goong to be interested in. Peraonaly, i have been on this for as much of the 72 hrs ive had it and cant complain about the batt. One bit. Even on the rare occasion it gets lower then i feel comfortable with a few minutes on a/c brings it up nicely. I would like a longer cord though.
Galaxy Tabs.....Worth every penny!!
I'm looking for one at the moment so I can get an additional 5 hours out of the tab, more if possible as I'm going on a very long haul flight at christmas. So far I've not had much luck. If anyone can recommend one I would be grateful.

My MiniGorilla external battery pack seems to be able to charge my Tab, though since it is rated at only 1A output it would likely charge quite slowly. It might be enough to keep it going for an extended plane journey though.

Dave
Thanks for the tip, ill get right on that and take a look at it!

I've found one which seems to be rated at 5v providing 2 amps via usb from zagg.com the product is the zaggsparq 2.0. I'm going to order one to test out since they ship to the uk and will let you know if its any good.

Middle of the page.
Watch the reviews on the zaggsparq... Seems like it may be apretty shoddy product. Looked awesome to me too, reviews gave me pause.
Sent from my SCH-I800 using XDA App
Well i've been using the Zagg today and it does work with the galaxy tab but I had to use the general usb port as the optimized port for some reason is treated like a pc usb port and you get the no charge symbol over the battery.
So far I'm impressed had it plugged in charged my tab from 70% to 100% and still the zagg is showing 3 led lights out of 4.
Takes a bit of fiddling I have to plug it in turn the display off on the tab. Leave it for a minute and when I turn the display back on it shows the charging symbol and actually starts charging while I'm using it.
I can't recommend it yet as I've only used it for a couple of hours so I'm waiting for my trip at christmas (27 hours of flying) before I make any judgements either way.

Extra battery for the Galaxy Tab

Hi,
Do you have an external battery for the Galaxy Tab? I was thinking of getting this one:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=219600407&pf_rd_i=468294
What do you guys think?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
It looks good and the price is attractive
I bought a similar battery 6-8 months ago for my laptop and it can also charge my psp, phones, pretty much everything
However, only buy it if you have a real use for it, such as travelling a lot ^^
Just keep in mind that at 750mA output, it won't charge the Tab while the Tab is in use. It'll spread the drain a bit, you will get more time out of the device, but it's not ideal.
Which one do you think would be a good solution? Is 1A output enough? Or maybe there is someone that could recommend a specific battery..?
I wil have to tavel a lot the next few months with lots of time spent in the airport waiting for connecting flights.

It doesn't *need* 2A output - it just charges so much faster with it.
My MiniGorilla battery can charge my Tab, but does so very slowly and indeed works better if the Tab is off.

But does the battery handle the running tab? I mean does the battery of the tab discharge when it is on and used, while connected to the battery?

This one doesn't look half-bad, specs wise:

1.5A output is nice. Sadly, doesn't look like it comes with a car charger adapter for itself as well.

Ok, this morning my Tab had around 34% battery left.
I decided to watch some video streamed from my Tab to my PC via AllShare, and decided to try this whilst connected to my MiniGorilla rather than the mains.
I watched in total around 40 minutes of video, but it was off and on as I was doing other things at the time, including popping out to the shops for a while.
In total it took me two hours to finish, and in that time the Tab went from 34% to 54% charged.
Of course, this was screen off, so later on I'll try playing a video directly on the Tab and see how that affects the charging from my MiniGorilla. In the meantime, I'll set my Tab to keep the screen on for an hour and stream some music from Spotify and see how that affects it.
Regards,
Dave

Ok, so I tried this and the battery did drain around 5% in an hour with the screen on (auto brightness), and streaming Spotify through the internal speakers.
This would give the Tab around 20 hours worth of continuous use before draining completely.
So at this load, the MiniGorilla doesn't provide enough current to charge the Tab, but does considerably slow the rate of discharge. In addition, since the MiniGorilla is rated at 9000mAh, I'd imagine it would still have some charge in it at the point the Tab fully discharged.
This would definitely keep me going on a long haul flight, so I'm happy with it.
Regards,
Dave

EDIT: nevermind my previous post - I can confirm that the Energizer XPAL XP8000 with the Energizer PC007 ipad charge adapter DOES charge the Galaxy Tab (it's rated at [email protected]).
The Tab will think it's connected to a PC, and the battery status will say "Not Charging", but Circular Battery Indicator widget went from 58% -> 60% over 20mins approx, so it is in fact charging.

It thinks it is a PC, and according to the battery icon it isn't charging, though in reality it is.
I suggest that your XPal is probably charging it too - leave it connected a couple of hours with the Tab asleep and you should see that the battery charge goes up.

[Q] Does the One discharge faster than charge?

After seeing how slow the One charges in Anandtech's review especially because fast charge is disabled, I have to ask this question, does it charge (AC not USB) if you are for example, browsing the web on it?
Definitely yes. I've only found one moment where it's discharged while charging.
That was when I was playing music as well as playing Shadowgun Deadzone at the same time. It was still charging more though because when the game was at a menu (i.e. not as much game activity) it would charge as normal.

Well that's great news as web browsing is as heavy as I ever go on my device, never play games.
I've noticed that while charging in the car and using GPS it discharges slightly faster than it charges so possibly on a very long trip you may eventually run out of power especially if you don't start off with a full battery.
With my iPhone 5 the phone would always charge when using it as a GPS and would get to 100% very quickly.

The battery on mine does seem to go down pretty quickly, if you game youre looking at a few charges a day. At least that's how it's been for me.
Maybe my units a bit dodgy
Strange, on my evo shift (old phone if you've never heard of it), the battery will continue to charge even when running intensive activities such as playing 3D games and such
It also depends on the adapter...Battery Monitor Widget by 3c lets you see the input mAh

Cyanogenmod with Zerolemon Battery 9300 (inquiry)

Just curious how many days your getting out of the battery for those running Cyanogenmod which seems to already have a very good battery. I'm a sucker for things that can keep me going, and I've pretty much made the decision to grab the battery with the nice case offered.
I have tried already searching Google and the long Zerolemon battery thread but couldn't find anything relevant.
Been using this 9300 battery for a few weeks. I do use my Bluetooth to a small speaker at work for about 9 hours a day and I am still getting 2 full days. That is as long as I fully charge it. If I unplug as soon as my indicator says 100% then it drains pretty fast. Without using the Bluetooth for that time period I am curious how many days it will go. I either use cyanogenMod or aosb probam

I'm using the same... full charge time 28-30 hrs.. use 3 stock batteries in between. Battery lasts 2-5 days depending on use. Will last for weeks if hibernating and just using occationally for phone calls/ texting.
I ignore almost all app permissions, disable wifi, gps, bluetooth, google aps, and only enable when needed. Stop almost everything from running in the background except phone/messaging/alarm (settings, keyboard). No sync, email notifications etc. etc
Using a quick charge 2.0 wall and car charger when I need a fast charge or just plug in while using battery draining apps like gaming, internet, movies.
*Go into Shift Tools and bump the usb charging input all the way up! Turn the phone off and super quick charge! Not recomended by the manufacturer. I do it all the time with no problems yet. Must have a usb charging cable with shortened pins, not a data cable.

"
Shift Tools" comes with the Cyanide L Rom and Shift Kernel by Brett Rogers (rogersb11).
For a SUPER FAST charge use 2.0 car or wall charger and usb charging cable (not a data cable).
Open system settings, scroll down to shift tools, open shift tools, swipe over to "charge control", go down the list turning everyrhing all the way up make sure you scroll to the very bottom and turn on " ignore 100mA safety margin and "ignore unstable power detection!!
Then turn display brightness all the way down, put phone into airplane mode or turn off phone.
I only use this when I need a quick charge and do not leave this charging past 100%... enjoy.

Slow USB charging?

Anyone notice this? It actually loses charge, faster than it can charge. Using same computer ports as when I had my note 3.
Use the wall plug. A computer does not put out enough
NOTE 4
Using any 2 amp charger I find it charges surprisingly fast. Computer ports usually give you only .5 amps. If you were using a USB 3.0 port and cable with the Note 3 you might have been getting much more juice out of the same port.
Yeah, my computer has USB 2.0 and 3.0. Like I mentioned earlier, my note 3 didn't have any issue. Strange.

Gps and navigation software use a lot processing power and the screen stays on all the time, so shouldn't be a surprise that battery goes down fast. In order to keep up with discharging rate you need 2A or more battery charger usb port is not sufficient.

Thanks for the info. I was surprised by this because it never was an issue on my Win mobile phones or iphones. I bought a Qi wireless charger that uses the lighter for power and it seems to be able to keep the phone charged while in use.
