Internal memory full with Link2SD - Galaxy Ace S5830 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Im using Link2SD to link applications to memory card, and i linked almost all of them (100 apps). I left in internal memory only preinstalled apps and GO launcher. Despite that, my internal memory is almost full. I constantly get that warning and I am unable to instal new apps, so i have to uninstall old ones...
What is using my int. memory if all apps are on sd? How can I free some space?

not only Apps will reside in the internal storage. But also the Contacts, Email and all the SYNC info will be cached in the internal storage.
1. Emails:
Please checked your AUTO sync, Sync only when needed and delete unecessary emails.
2. Contacts (FB contacts,SNS accounts)
will used up also storage, dont sync FB activities. Thousand of contacts means a lot.

i do not sync anything with facebook nor use email/gmail apps... Anything else?

This happened the first time I used Link2SD. If you had any apps linked the FroYo way to the sd card before you took out card and formatted it for link2sd, those apps aren't deleted. I noticed this when I mounted the ext2 partition on my computer and some of the files were "Angry Birds Rio_1", including a "_1" whereas others weren't, eg. "Angry Birds Seasons". The ones with the "_1" were duplicates that the phone wasn't picking up AFAIK.
I just factory restored the phone, reformatted the ext2 partition and started again, setting up Link2sd before installing anything else. I had backed up the apps with Titanium and when I restored them all on the factory restored phone and made sure all were linked, I was only using 50mb of internal storage. If I install Angry Birds and link it, the internal memory is still reduced by ~16mb, even though it is meant to be linked so that could also influence your memory shortage?

Whats your firmware? If 2.3.x then Link2SD won't work at all due to known issues (which seems won't be solved)

Yes, it seems to me to that linking doesnt mean moving whole app to SD. And having 16mb used just by angry birds in internal storage is too much. Is there a way to move whole app?
@mastrone I have Froyo. Is there a way to link apps if i move to GB?

You must set your data(mobile provider) settings, TYPING by hand(they cant be identify by default to all ROM-s, what is 2.3+). If you know your mobile provider settings, then add them(Name can be WHAT EVER YOU WANT). If not just call and ask what the APN must to be and edit it. Save then and you DONE!

In Froyo and Link2sd is working fine to Froyo, if you formatted your SD card correctly(FAT32 and EXT2). Just use MINITOOL to do this. Read this how:http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=SD_card_partitioning

need help with apps2sd on Fresh rom

I just installed the latest version of the fresh Rom. The page for the rom says it will automagically use apps2sd If The card is formatted properly. I use the recovery rom (1.52) to format the card, with a 32mb swap and 512mb ext. But, iapps2sd doesn't seem to be working. I have rbooted, and I have also used the recovery Rom to " move apps and dalv to SD", but the apps are still taking up the phones internal memory.
Is there something I'm missing to activate apps2sd, or move the apps over?
Thanks
http://geekfor.me/faq/apps2sd/
I used the link, and got the response that it working. So why then are the apps still taking up the phone memory? Is this the usual response? What happens when it fills up? Is there anything left for me to do?

Everytime you install or run things, internall memeory is still used for data and other items that are not the APK file. What is the memory amount you show as free? A2SD only moves APK's to the SD. Additionally you can move the dalvik-cache there as well, but internal memory still gets used by app data, widget data, etc.. You might have a bunch of widgets storing lots of data.

Sorry to bring up an old thread...
I gotta say that I think there is something wrong with the version of Apps2SD on the Fresh ROM - or something isn't configured correctly.
I get the same issue (as do many others from the digging I have done) - and I KNOW that the programs I have installed aren't using up THAT much memory.
When I switch to any other ROM using A2SD - with all the same programs installed and no changes in the partitioning - I magically have 140 MB free of internal memory.
Any thoughts?

I highly recommend using CMW for making the partition. I've had some problems making them through my PC. With CMW you just set the amount of size you want it and wait till its done.
Then install S2E.
yea its better to make it by cwm and its very easy....
but make sure you have the backup of you sdcard before partitioning...
Hey ! I just googled about partitioning sd card and found that CWM may brick your phone.. is it true ?

If your phone is rooted, follow these steps -
1) Download root explorer or file manager app from market.
2) Open the app
3) Go to system/app
4) Delete the following files
swype.apk
thinkdroid.apk or thinkfree.apk if you dont use thinkfree office(something like that, i dont remember the exact name)
youtube.apk
fmradio.apk and fmradio.odex
voicesearch.apk
voicerecorder.apk and voicerecorder.odex
etc..
Delete these files only if you dont use all these apps. Don't blame me later on.

Apps disappearing from EXT4 partition
Hi everyone. Since I see that at least part of this thread seems to be talking about Link2SD, I wondered whether anyone might be able to offer some insight into the problem I am experiencing.
Before that however, let me explain that I started off with an 8GB micro SD card with a 500MB EXT4 partition. I had been fast running out of space in the internal phone memory, and my SD drive itself was also filling up fast. When I installed Link2SD I managed to regain a considerable amount of free space on the internal memory.
The problem is though that once I had linked the majority of my apps to the EXT4 partition and backed up the device in that condition with CWM, once I rebooted the system all the apps that were linked had disappeared. However there are still some 244MB of files on the EXT4 partition that Link2SD says are in use, and I cannot delete them.
I then purchased a 16GB micro SD card from Samsung, and tried to restore the CWM backup to that card....my apps were missing apart from the few that remained on the FAT32 partition and in the phone memory....I should mention that this also happened before I installed the CM7.1 ROM.
Now things have really become problematic. I decided to remove quite a few apps, then download the latest version of Link2SD from the apps Market. But although there is now plenty of space on all partitions I keep getting the 'insufficient storage available' message, and I cannot install anything. I also did a CWM restore on the original 8GB SD card with the same result. This is why I cannot lay the blame fully on Link2SD, as there has to be a glitch somewhere in my installation.
FreeSpace [Root] shows the following on the 8GB based system:
Cache free space 20.7MB
Data free 16.6MB
Ext free 265.0MB
SD-card free 959.1MB
System free 48.2MB
So what gives? I really don't understand what's going on. I am running the latest CM7.1-RC1 Cooper-Grif ROM build number GWK74, with Kernel version 2.6.35.7-CL-562111 [email protected]#1 with all updates necessary. This is costing me more time than I can afford to lose on this, and I really need to find a solution once and for all, preferable without having to reinstall everything again from scratch, which is what I intend doing once the official Cyanogen Mod becomes available finally.
Thanks in advance, and apologies for the long post.

•ƒγяύs ργяσ™•
I got some problems doing this. This is what I did:
I had many apps installed and moved to SD (8gb class 4), so I made a backup of the SD content.
I formatted it, and created 2 partitions (6.8gb and 515mb) using Minitool Partition Wizard. Both are primary and FAT32 (if I create the 2nd partition as EXT2 the phone says SD is damaged).
Moved my backup content again to the 6.8gb partition and rebooted the phone.
Looks like everything is right but Link2SD says "second partition not found".
What IM doing wrong?
Would Link2SD detect that 2nd partition if I flash my phone and I start installing apps now that my SD has 2 partitions?
IMHO from what I've experience, Link2sd does not accept fat partitions. I had the same problem.
Are you looking for the correct type of partition?
Start Link2sd>menu>More>recreate mount scripts and choose FAT32/FAT16

Rooted my phone, moved apps to sd card, dumped dalvik cache, but still full memory...

Hey every one,
Yesterday i rooted my phone using superoneclick (running android 2.2.1) because i was getting sick of the fact that my memory was running full.
After that i did this:
Deleted facebook to make space for link2sd (have no seccond partition)
Installed link2sd,
Moved apps to sd.
Installed facebook on sd,
Go with my root file manager into /data/dalvik-cache/ and deleted everything inside there (50 mb) but after rebooting my phone the memory starts filling itself again and my dalvik cache was full again.
What can i do to make my memory free? Im havin 12 mb free now, but thats not enoug....
And also, is it safe to move apps like calander to sd?
Thanks, domini99

as you are saying you have root then download a2sd froyo root open the app select the data storage as external then you can move almost all apps to external memory but it will also not leave many storage for you I will recommend you to first upgrade to gingerbread then partition your sdcard and use link2sd
First a question: can i go furder from herr or do i have to close this topic? Thanks!

...?!? you have deleted all dalvik-cache?!? First: the data of apps are in system/data/data then you not must touch the dalvik-cache, second: use install manager for move the apps on sdcard and not link2sd, install manager is better, third: you can move only the apps (apk) on sdcard but the data remain on internal memory then also if you install all in sdcard the internal memory it lowers, the only way for move all (apk+data) on sdcard is do a partition, without the partition you not can move also the data but only the apk, then for you now the only way for get more free memory is uninstall all useless apps.

Ooh. Eeerm.... Yeaaah... Well, see. Im not the smartest here...
Oke, i looked into data/data and therr was a lot of junk in from apps i already uninstalled, almost 10 mb! I deleted that and deleted dalvik, than rebooted and now 154 mb free!!!
I installed install manager, but.. What do i need to do with it? Link 2 sd i used to set install location and moved some apps. That did a lot for me. I always wanted a game, but that was 50 mb, and that will never fitt on the internel memory, but it only could on internel, now its on sd, and working great
Thanks for reply, im already helped that far to know how to take care of my memory.
But its still fine if someone can give me some tips, im brand new to root and i understand only 10% of everything....
Thanks

Titanium Backup FTW!!!
So, I used titanium backup to move some things from the internal memory to the sd card. It worked fine as now I have about 20-30 mb free on internal. and this is good.
Also, a 2 Gb sd card is ok, but a larger one would be perfect . I have a 2 Gb now and I'll need a larger one soon ).
Also I uninstalled all useless apps like: Facebook, Twitter etc ) All useless social apps, the park is much better also the school.
That's all I know. Hope it helps u somehow.
I have also internal memory so full (about 20mb free)

you must create ext3 or ext4 primary partition on your sdcard. to create partition, install mini tool partition wizard to your pc. then you can use link2sd to link dalvik caches to your sdcard. or, if you use cm7 as your rom, you can install s2e. to remove system apps, use link2sd

Are you linking the apk, dex and lib files or just installing (moving) apps to sd? You should create link to free up your internal space.
Take it from my experience. I used stocklite for almost 5 months with link2sd. Linked all apps except for those with widgets or that i needed at boot left on internal. 80 apps, 50 mb free on internal.
If you change to cyanogenmod you won't have more internal space, same space, different rom. When you do the required wipes with cwm (which you should to install cyano roms) it will format and erase the partition. You'll still have your partitioned sd card, but all info in that partition will be gone.

I installed Cyno Mod 7 ROM and it works just fine and i have partitioned again and everything is fine now..but i backuped my stocklite and i dont have the original ROM which i used even before rooting how to get that 'the real one which i had when i bought the phone?' if i have that one ..i can change it to anytime when i want..
Carrier specific roms are harder to find than free roms. Go to sammobile and check if they have the rom that came with your phone.
The stock roms are all installed through your computer with odin and your phone in download mode.

[Q] How do you live with only 4GB of storage ?

Hello,
I am a new owner of a S3 mini. I tried many differents tweaks to move my apps to sd card (including Link2SD) but none worked.
So I am now stuck with only 4Gb of Storage, my device is already full (some updates cannot be done).
So I was wondering how you guys deal with this storage limitation ?
Thanks
I have only 1 GB in use (100 apps)

Same here. 3.5gb free. All I've done is to use foldermount to mount my navigon maps to external sd.
No games installed. I use my PS3 for that

Thanks a lot, I'll check foldermount.
482 mb free
I have 482mb free on my internal storage , and I use ex. card but it's obly 2gb so I'm planing to buy bigger one
Finally I tested Foldermount : this is the only app I could use with success to move apps to the SD card ...
So thanks a lot for this information !
But I have one question : I could not find any tutorial about Foldermount, the only way I know how to move apps is to select the app folder and the destination app. This is not very friendly ... The S3 mini is for my girlfriend, I need something as simple as possible (she's not a geek ...).
On Foldermount there is a menu which displays all your apps, but when I select one, the buttons (source or destination) remain grey (unusable) and there is an error message saying something like this app may already be linked to sdcard ...
Is there a tutorial about foldermount ?
Is there a way to use it without the need of selecting each app folder to move ?
Is there a way to just select the app and ask to move it to sd card ?
Thanks

Foldermount doesnt move apps to external sd, but link folders from internal sd to external sd.
I still find it very usefull to link download folder and other things like GPS maps. You can also link those game obb files that get stored in your sd (Android/obb) and free up alot of space if you play games.
You can read the original thread here.

To my point of view, it does move the app to external SD as it moves files to external SD and then create a link in the internal memory to external SD.
If it wouldn't move data to external SD card, this application would have no interest.
The only problem for me with this app is that to use it, you need to know in which folder of your internal memory the app has been installed. It's not very easy for everyone. It would be better if when Foldermount shows the list of your apps, you could just select it and then move it to SD.
This feature seems to be existing but does not work for now. Maybe in a later release ...
Anyway, this is the only "move to SD" app I tried which is working fine with the S3 mini.

Thanks but I already tried this, it does not work : the S3 mini does answer correctly to the ADB commands, it says it's now configured for external storage (2) but when I install an app it still does it on the internal storage ...
Really, I tried many different methods, only Foldermount worked.
DirectoryBind with only one link: /sdcard/Android to /storage/extSdCard/Android
Device should be rooted.
Also, in DirectoryBind preferences you need to enable Bind on boot and Alternate dbase mgmt.
That's all you need. All apps data will be stored on external sdcard including cache of games.

The same can be done with foldermount, and it's still maintained with updates which dirictorybind isn't.

For what you need an updates of DirectoryBind? It does not need any update because it smooth and fully working. Atleast, on 4.1.2.
For 4.2.2 we need to switch to FolderMount or manually add mount to init.d
With FolderMount you cannot mount sdcard/Android, you need to mount each cache folder separately.
Maybe it is fixed already in latest version, dunno. If yes, then I will switch to FolderMount too =)
With "destination folder check" unticked in settings it works fine. Maybe it's a pro feature.
Sent through time and space from my s3mini/CM10.

Thanks a lot for this great information ! I was linking the apps directories one by one ... Now I understand you can link the whole apps directory just once ... Great !

Finally I tried to link sdcard0 to sdcard1 : it seems to work if I look at Foldermount status, but in reality it does not copy anything to the SD card ... This is strange ... Plus after having linked sdcard0 to sdcard1, I cannot remove this link : it says a copy is running and I cannot stop it. In reality nothing is copying, so I need to uninstall Foldermount to remove the link ...
