[Q] Will the 'Kernel version' containing reference to root invalidate warranty? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Firmware: 2.3.3
Baseband: I9000BWJV2
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9000XWJVH-CL184813 root at DELL101 #2
Build number: GINGERBREAD.XWJVH
I had rooted my Galaxy S I9000 using z4root and applied RyanZA's OCLF lagfix, then removed the lagfix and unrooted in preparation for the official firmware update to Gingerbread through Samsung Kies.
Firmware update went fine, but in Settings > About Phone > Kernel version, there is still a reference to root (see above).
My phone is definitely no longer rooted - none of the apps that require root access have it.
The speaker on my phone is now cutting out intermittently and producing distorted crackly sound, so I want to hand my phone in to an approved Samsung Service Centre for repair.
Will this reference to root in the kernel version give away the fact that I'd rooted prior to the firmware update? Will this invalidate the warranty and mean that they won't repair the phone? Or is this mention of 'root at...' something that appears in the 'About phone' screen of an unrooted stock phone anyway?
I'd rather not mess with flashing kernels via Odin etc if I don't have to, but if that's what it takes to get a component failure sorted through an approved service centre then so be it...
Any advice gratefully received.

It appears also on a unrooted firmware. Its the name of the stock kernel and is not affected by rooting.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

that has nothing to do with if your phone is rooted or not. It is just a reference to the builder of that kernel version.

Flash back the original FW through ODIN v1.3.
Original FW can be found on: http://www.samfirmware.com/
(You'll need to register to download)
Click:
Toolbox >> Firmware >> FW Android >> -Select Device and FW of your device- (ODIN can be found here as well including the instructions how to flash).
After flashing they (Samsung Service Center) can't see that you have ever had your phone rooted.
Good Luck

He already is on stock (update through kies) so he doesnt had to flash with odin

Maybe try doing a factory reset. When I updated from 2.1 to 2.2 using kies the update didn't apply correctly. Once I did a factory reset everything was fine.
It will wipe all of your data and apps though, so if you don't mind losing them then it's no problem.

True, I saw that.
The sollution to reset the kernel is by flashing kernel through ODIN since kernel wasnt updated with the Gingerbread update through Samsung Kies.

Kies Restore gives ROOT? O.O

Hello! Last week I tried many firmwares but I decided to restore the original one using KIES.
To restore the stock firmware I downgraded to JF3, than used Kies's test mode to update.
After having turned the phone on I went in the info section of the settings and I get these data:
2.1-update1
I9000XXJM2
Kernel version 2.6.29 [email protected] #2
ECLAIR.WXJM3
How can be possible that after 2 odin flashes and a kies upgrade I still have root? How can I remove it if I have to send it back for warranty? Thank you very much... have a nice day!
I forgot to say that I used the CSC CSC_I9000HUIHUI that I have found here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7822645&postcount=167)
Where are you from? i didnt think JM3 was available over Kies anyway? try flashing again and check re-partition in Odin.
i used the JM1 from here:
https://www.wuala.com/Samsung Galax...ginal Firmwares/Europe/July/?key=AfzUZSU4SpKU
and it worked fine with no root, make sure u flash CSC, PDA and MODEM
I am Italian... and I updated using Kies_1.5.1.10071_32
you cant have flashed properly, read the steps in the BIG FAQ under app development in this forum. or just do what i said above
I flashed using re-partition, with
s1_odin_20100512.pit
CODE_I9000XXJF3_REV03_LOW.tar
MODEM_I9000XXJF3.tar
CSC_I9000OXAJF3.tar
than I updated via kies
I don't think the "root" in the build details means you have a rooted phone - I believe it's because it was compiled by someone logged in as root on a computer at Samsung. Root on your phone is really just a matter of having the su command and the Superuser Permissions application.
Do you have that application? If you run a terminal emulator and type su, does it work?
I didn't try the su command also because I didn't have the the app in the list. Anyway this is very strange!
I agree this isn't strange at all really, you should only be worrying about this when you actually need to send it in for prepare anyway

What is your kenel version?
Does anybody know how can I change it?
[email protected] #2

is your phone rooted too?
Rooting your phone has nothing to do with that '[email protected]' string. That is from the firmware developers, probably was there on the JF3 firmware you put on, or was given because you used the test mode.
Rooting your phone doesn't change that [email protected] or [email protected], it is absolutely irrelevant. Your phone is not rooted unless you did it yourself.
is that a problem when you send it for warranty?

Probably. You have installed an experimental beta firmware. But again, it always depends on the guy at the shop.

[Q] Resetting Back to Stock

Really sorry to post something which im sure has been done before but from what i've found here I can't properly interpret the details of what is to be done.
Basically I upgraded to Android 2.2 on my Galaxy S 19000 in December using a guide online (forget where sorry) but I want to revert back to my stock ROM as to enable Samsung Kies updating. Im in Australia. I have no mods or anything installed.
Sorry for being so vague, if I need to post certain details about my phone then i'l be happy to, just unsure of what you might need from me.
Also i've been trying to follow the guide here "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751639&page=19" but I can't follow it properly as i'm a bit thick.
The rom that will update is the one that came with the phone . Kies will look for the phones product code hardware ID etc then update .
If you do not have the original Kies cannot update .
You are left to try the stock rom from samsungfirmware.com but its stock Samsung not the one that came with the phone .
jje
That is incorrect. You do not need the rom that the phone was shipped with.
I've flashed from custom roms and back to stock numerous times. Choose one of the 2.1 stick roms from samfirmwares.com. Flash using odin using a 512 pit file and repartition ticked if using the 3 file flashing option. kies will then quite happily upgrade to the latest rom.
There are flashing instructions and all software and firmware on samfirmware.com

But thats not the rom that came with the phone thats the stock Samsung rom BEFORE its handed to the network/phone provider .
AS I SAID

but does it matter?
you can say you made a kies-update. -ther's nothin illegal with it.
OP said he wanted to revert back .
My phones warranty is invalid as i do not have the firmware supplied by the provider of the phone and i suspect that is true for all branded models .
Its up to the warranty provider where the phone was bought to accept non standard firmware on the phone or not . Mine refused point blank and even showed the instructions from Samsung reference warranty claims with non standard firmware and the tech went as far as to say that his company who are the seller of the phone and responsible for warranty will not repair any phone that does not have their branded firmware on it .
Thats what i always presume when answering >> i want to go back to stock >.that the OP requires to return to the firmware that came with the phone to safeguard warranty .As they also have no backup of the original firmware .
jje
But by flashing 2.1 you are able to then flash to the most current stock firmware as released by your provider. That's the whole point

+ yes if its accepted by Kies and for a number of users it has not and thats why Kies Registry patcher was used .
Stock samsung eclair rom failed to be accepted by Kies when i did exactly as you are suggesting . It required a spoofed Kies registry etc to get the update .
That is something i understand no longer works .
jje
Sorry but most of what you say just isn't true. If you flash to fw that predates your original fw and had the correct region code you can quite happily then use kies to upgrade to the current fw for your region. This is not detectable and cannot invalidate you warranty. So flash to ANY early fw, then let kies legally upgrade you - simple. Please don't peddle supposition as fact. And yes I've done this numerous times, and yes my phone had been back for an unrelated repair without warranty problems
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Lets get a few things straight:
If its about warranty, most shops/centers want the firmware selected by kies, I know examples of people with kies software via a registry hack that where denied because it wasn't the right region.
Kies is still considered to be safer than Odin, although I never had trouble with Odin.
Again if you want if it for warranty just update your firmware with kies, alternatively you can check the latest version for you country/operator and download and flash the right firmware from sammiefirmware.
@stitch
exactly
Just use SpoofFW and flash normaly with kies...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959806
The registry hack doesn't work with kies2.0.

[Q] Help me please. 2.2

Okey, first of all, I'm a complete noob when it comes to this, so I need some help.
After long browsing I was able to root my Samsung Galaxy.
Now I want to update my Galaxy from 2.2 to Gingerbread.
Since I rooted my Galaxy it won't connect to Kies anymore, so I guess Kies won't work.
I have an Samsung Galaxy S I9000,
FROXO.XWJPA,
Kernel Version 2.6.32.9
Is it possible to update, if yes, how?
Thanks
anyone? :l

Download a FW from Samfirmware, the latest is I9000XXJVR (Its 2.3.4), then via Odin you flash a 3 file's, its CODE, MODEM and CSC, and pit file and tick re-partition
Xooley,
I'm new on the forums so cant post any links but if you search for "how to use Odin" then it's really not that difficult.
The biggest decision you have is whether to stick with a "stock" copy of firmware i.e released by the manufacturer or install one of the modded versions from the hard working developers on XDA.
if you have a rooted phone then this wouldn't normally prevent KIES from working, so it might be that your carrier (orange?) hasn't release a Gingerbread version yet.
You can get most stock roms from samfirmwares as stated above. If you've never installed a rom before, make sure you read about it (checked youtube) to see if there are any problems with the one that you have chosen.
best of luck

[Q] Update i9000 from Stock 2.3.3 to Latest Gingerbread

Hi friends,
i was an iPhone user since 2007 but now i bought Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000, it has "Movistar" logo on its back,
i m completely noob on Android so please guide me.
when i bought my phone it was on 2.0 Eclair then i connected my phone with my laptop with data cable and Samsung Kies.
After connecting:
Samsung KIES showed me Gingerbread Updates
So First KIES updated my phone to 2.2 Froyo
And then it updated it to 2.3.3 Gingerbread.
"""i have read many posts here and as far as i know i think i m on Stock firmware and i updated my phone using Official updates from Samsung KIES and one more thing i want to clear here is before updating my phone my SIM CARD was working perfect no issues and after updating my phone still my SIM CARD is working absolutely fine so i think my phone is fully Unlocked (Please Clarify if i m wrong)"""
So after that long time has been passed i am waiting for Official updates for my phone of Gingerbread 2.3.4 or above but did not find any.
i used 2.3.4 on my friend's phone it works much smoother and faster than 2.3.3 thats why i want to upgrade it unofficially because i cant update it officially.
Can you Please tell me the procedure to update my phone to the latest Gingerbread Stock version unofficially?
Here is what written in "About Phone"
Model Number: GT-I9000
Firmware Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: I9000BGJV1
Kernal Version: 2.6.35.7-I9000BGJV5-CL307695 [email protected]#2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.BGJV5
I updated my sgs to 2.3.4 JVR which works great for me, and I used a guide on the website androidsoul.com to go step by step how to do it with odin, and if you search around a little there are plenty if guides here on xda as well

Which firmware should i go for there are so many
XXJVP = 2.3.4
XXJVR = 2.3.4
XXJVS = 2.3.5
and many more
And what is the difference between firmware with boot loader and firmware without boot loader ?
Sorry for so many questions i m new to Android.
you should go for XXJVS, or for XXJVT, i use a JVT ROM, and its pretty cool.
well, you always have a boot-loader... BUT, you should not flash a boot-loader, because that is one of the rare ways to really "brick" your phone.
the things you need, are odin, the .tar files you want to flash (you should find jvt or jvs here to download, as well as odin)
and just google for flash guide odin, or sth like that, after a few minutes you wil know what to do.
read carefully! and if some points aren't clear for you, don't bother asking.
(The reason why we don't write a full "how-to" is, because it is really done quite often and should not be hard to find)
I have flashed XXJVS Successfully and its working faster and stable than 2.3.3 its amazing. Thank you All for your Support

if you really mess up and brick your phone its mostly the same as if an update via kies fail and brick it

what does it means? and why Kies don't let me update via kies?

I heard 4.1.2 official Samsung update is rolling out.
I connected my N7000 to the computer and opened KIES after a long time i didn;t opened Kies. It said that a firmware is available, and also said a new version of KIES is available.
I thought I should update Kies first, so I did.
After Kies updated I connected the G Note again, and this time Kies said:
"Your device's current firmware version is not supported to update firmware via Kies"
Current firmware version: PDA:LPY/PHONE:LPT/CSC:LPY(KOR)
my device information is:
4.0.3
N7000XXLPT
kernel version: 3.0.15-N7000XXLPY-CL474507
Build: IML74K.XXLPY
Does anyone can tell me why KIES doesn't let update firmware via KIES?
I bought my phone few month ago from somebody and he said that the phone can get official updates.
Is the phone info and firmware/build etc. is an official firmware?
I don't want to put non official ROM or 4.1.2.
Thanks for any help!
Probably because you have a non-stock kernel. Flash the stock kernel that goes with your stock rom and try again.
It's because you probably have a German rom and the csc is set to Korea. Dial *#272*IMEI# and choose DBT.
Doing this will wipe your phone. So make sure you are on a safe kernel and backup your important data.

How do I find the device IMEI?
and what do you mean by " make sure you are on a safe kernel"?
thanks again!
all the data is backed....
You are on ICS stock. But i dont know what kernel you are on and what info about the kernel you have mentioned, seems to be stock. Stock ICS kernels are not safe to do a reset.. so to be safe you need to install a safe kernel ... I would recommend flashing Philz kernel LRT zip from stock recovery..
IMEI is either by daialing *#06# or its in about device > status section
