CM7 SD card Users - How do you Backup? - Nook Color General

Guys,
I have been using a micro SD based CM7.0.2 installation for quite a while now using verygreen's size agnostic SD image on a 16Gb card. I'm going to try 7.0.3 and an OC kernel but I want a backup since this uSD has become my main setup.
I figured I could image the disk win32diskimager (which is what I wrote the original image with) but unfortunately that tool seems to have a limit of 4Gb on the image file. So, what tool are 16Gb+ uSD card user using to back up your SD card? I want it to image the entire card with all partitions that way I can just backup the entire OS and all my data in one shot.
Any tips or pointers appreciated!

It ain't free, but it works.

I've used win32diskimager multiple times to do just that with 16GB Sandisk cards. The image file in my case is 4.1G (as most of it is empty space anyway)
Every one of my SDs is archived this way whenever I update a new build/kernel.
I've never had more than 3G of files on any card so I can't speak to what happens if the actual content is 4G or greater.

My SD card is about 13 to 14Gb full.... my image is coming out @ exactly 4.0gb, I figured there might be some compression going on, but > 3 to 1 struck me as a little too good, so I'm not trusting win32diskimager.

What OS/File system are you using? I seem to recall FAT32 having a file size limit of 4GB. That could be what you are running into.

I'll take a look. It's a Windows Vista desktop PC so I'd expect HDDs to be formatted NTFS but I haven't explicitly checked.
EDIT: It's NTFS. So that's not the issue. Chokes on more than one computer.

If you can not back up the whole disk image,
how about backing up just all your data files with the USB connection onto your pc?
It seems that each app has their own directory for their data.
Those directories can be copied directly with the USB connection.
This way you can have a new build anytime and still have all your data available.

I'm not sure I understand the concept of backup. What exactly are we backing up? I was under the impression that you can go from one CM7 release to another without losing anything.

It is true that one can update the system with old data intact.
But somebody may feel better if they have their data saved somewhere so that if something happen to the system, they can have their data available to them.
This is espicially true if you are using one device and if you have all your data on that device.

Or if you want to boot multiple OSes/mods and have a stable fall back point, or if you think a curious kid may pop your card out of your nook and lose it, or if the device is lost/stolen, or the new version of the OS your using is not so good/stable after all (happened to me w/ CM7 nightlies), or there's a hardware failure (SD cards are fragile and have a limited life), etc, etc, etc, etc.
Seriously, if you care about your data even in the slightest only an idiot would rely on everything working perfectly all the time, especially on a removable media, much less one that is tiny, and not ultra durable. Not mention the funky partitioning etc under windows, such that it is only readable when in the device and booted.
Anyway, winimage works but it p*sses me off since it's not free. Still dunno why the other tool chokes, it's gotta be some "32 bit" thing.

I could never get win32diskimager to image my 8gb or 32gb SD card it would die at about 90%...I may go for win image. I understand what you are trying to do. I use my 8gb as a default to boot into cm7 recovery when all else fails. Right now i just use titanium backup for my data.

Sorry to read of your 'possible' loss. There are freeware programs out there that attempt file recovery on flash memory drives but when a similar thing happened to me out of the blue, I couldn't find one that worked well with my Sandisk 6 GB MicroSDHC and all I got were 'bits and pieces' of the files that were once there. Perhaps someone else has had a good experience of recovery software that worked well in this situation?
After you recover what you can of your files, before using the memory card again, I suggest you wipe/zero fill it to completely remove all data from it and then partition/reformat it. Sandisk offer a utility to do this but they expect you to pay for it so having lost my files on their memory card they then add salt to the wound expecting payment for a tool used in the process to get things back to normal again, what a cheek
I complained to them, mentioning that most hard disk drive manufacturers provide such a tool for free but they don't seem keen to do that. Instead I used the free HDD Wipe Tool at hddguru.com and then Win XPs own disk management function to partition and format it back to FAT32.
This is an important lesson for anyone else reading with a TyTN II - if you have anything of importance on your TyTN IIs microSD card, ensure it is backed up because there are now quite a few cases here on xda-dev like this. Personally I use Win XPs own backup utility in conjunction with the USB card reader, once I've put all my music/maps etc on the card. It's quick, simple and most importantly, free. Since I lost some (but not many) of my files on the first occasion, I've even needed to restore from backup once so don't count on your files staying there as they should.
try file scavenger 2.1 it worked well for me
good luck

Why won't my SD card partition?

Tried everything I could imagine. ROM Manager...Amon Ra's, Windows and used a Partition software. It always hangs (because it never get's past a certain point). Amon Ra just keeps going and going and going and never stops (left it for over 8 hours one time). ROM Manager says that it did it...but it didn't. Windows software also just keeps going and going and going.
I'm out of ideas. Why won't my SD card partition? It's a 16GB ADATA class 6 card. When I interrupt the partition process...I can see that it has partially partitioned the card...but not to the full capacity I requested.
It's weird because when I first got the card...I was able to partition without problems...only took a couple minutes or so with Amon Ra recovery. Now, nothing... I'm clueless...
Can anybody help me out?

did you format your sd after you interrupted the partition? maybe that will help?
I suggest you to copy all files to PC and then delete the current partition with a partition manager (do not resize it). Then, create the partitions you need again. It may be better to create them with ROM Manager.
And if that fails, you may do a surface test of your card, since it may have bad clusters. In this case I would not use that card.

Okay...so I'm going to delete the partition...then go straight into ROM Manager and see if that works.
Thanks for the replies!

[Q]Nook Color hangs on boot to HC04

I just wrote Honeycomb 04.img to my 32Gb SDHC card and put it in my Nook Color. It starts to boot successfully until it gets to the "android_" screen, then just hangs forever. Is using a 32gb card OK? I partitioned it using MiniTools Partition manager, but it only allowed me to set up the first part which I designated as 5gb. The rest of the unallocated space it refused to deal with even though it correctly saw the size. I can't see how that might affect the NC from reading the boot part, but I thought it worth checking with you guys. Or is it more likely that a file was not written correctly, and I should do it all over again? Has anyone had the same problem that could give me some advice? Thanks in advance.
My $0.02: don't use honeycomb. It is buggy, has tons of missing drivers and, many compatibility issues. Safe yourself headaches and use CM7.

If this post helped you don't forget to say thanks!
1. What brand of uSD you have?
2. Re-create the bootable uSD again.
Get it to boot first.
No need to use MiniTool or the a-like now, no need to worry about left-over space for now.
Its an unbranded SD, but all seems OK. Unfortunately my computer is 6 yrs old and doesn't recognize more than 4gb or SDHC cards, so I have to up and drive to a friend's house to do any operations on it. But I will try to reformat it and forget about wasted space for now. If it does eventually work, can I use MiniTools to create a partition that the Nook will be able to use as storage? Thanks for your help.
Theoretically, you don't have to use MiniTools, it should be ready for you to use, at least for CM7. My last try of HC was months ago and I still do believe that I am right on this.
Let's get yours up and running first.

Help, several NOOB questions

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP! I'm dead new with android and just got a Nook HD+ 32gb (groupon deal $130)
anyway, I've done a ton of reading on here and watched a bunch of youtube vids- i don't know if people use overlapping terminology that means the same things or what.. and also seems like theres a lot of opinions in the forums.
I want basically the full android experience and root access- like i said, never used any android, but i like toying around with these things. BUT i also really want a fully stable platform- don't want constant crashing or it reseting on me.
questions i have-
1)the CWM is the "program" (don't know the correct terminology) that basically gives me the access to back up and install new roms, root, etc? TWRP does the same thing- but i understand you don't use that?
2)If i have a BRAND NEW nook HD+ do i need to back it up before messing with it OR are the "stock rom" zips you provided just that?
2) with the SD card image, do i need to put a specific image on the specified sd card. i.e. 4gb SD gets a 4gb image? or is the image universal to whatever size SD card i get?
2a) What problems am i going to run into using my mac to make the SD card, if any? what program do i need to use?
4) when you back up through CWM where does it save it? to the SD card?
4a) this is where i was confused about the image, reading into some of the posts it led me to think the image file took up the entirety of the
SD card.
4b)So in the future i could just boot from the SD card and would have the option to flash the stock rom back on the HD+ if desired? and/or
go back to CM?
5) what is DUALBOOTING? and NANDROID? how do they tie into CWM and CM10. very confused about this.
6) any disadvantage to flashing the EMMC vs booting from SD card every time? I THINK i want to flash the emmc, i don't want to be tied to booting from the SD card everytime- if I'm understanding that correctly.
7)what is this "trim" lag problem? couldn't really figure out what people were talking about.
thanks a ton for any help you can give me- I'm sure you receive a lot of questions!

CWM (ClockworkMod) is a recovery program that allows you to do just what you said. TWRP is also a recovery, but uses the touch screen instead of hardware keys to control it.

You can either use the CWM backup tool to return your device to stock (including any data you have already created, like registration) or the plain stock zips I have will also return you to stock, but the way it was when you got it new before registering.
3) with the SD card image, do i need to put a specific image on the specified sd card. i.e. 4gb SD gets a 4gb image? or is the image universal to whatever size SD card i get?

Since you have a Mac, the best way to do it is the new procedure without burning an image. Since I don't have a Mac, I don't know the exact programs to use. I think SDFormatter comes in a Mac version. And I know there are lots of mac partitioning programs to set the first partition active. And using the procedure does use all of the SD, so it is best to use a relatively small one, 2-4GB.

It saves it either to the SD card or internal memory, you choose.
Yes it uses all of the SD if you use the new procedure. But you need that if you choose to backup to SD. A backup takes about 1.5GB.
And yes, save the SD for future use, like restoring backups or installing new ROMs.
5) what is DUALBOOTING? and NANDROID? how do they tie into CWM and CM10. very confused about this.
Click to collapse
Dual booting means having one operating system on internal memory (also called emmc for Embedded MultiMedia Card) and one installed to a bootable SD. Most people that dual boot have stock on internal and CM on SD. They are separate and independent from each other.
Nandroid just means internal memory. So a nandroid backup means backing up whatever you have on internal memory.
6) any disadvantage to flashing the EMMC vs booting from SD card every time? I THINK i want to flash the emmc, i don't want to be tied to booting from the SD card everytime- if I'm understanding that correctly.

The only advantage to booting to CM on SD is it leaves internal memory untouched for warranty reasons. The disadvantage is it runs slower and is less stable.
7)what is this "trim" lag problem? couldn't really figure out what people were talking about.

LAG is a complex issue to explain. If you are used to hard drives getting fragmented and slowing down your system, LAG is similar but a different mechanism with solid state flash drives. TRIM is a process to undo what causes LAG. But some of the solid state chips in these devices have a bug and when TRIM is run, it bricks the chip, making it unusable.

Help please! Xt1068 cm13 erased sd card

Hi everybody, this is my first post.
Please guys help me with this issue.
I've recently upgraded my moto g Xt1068 to cm13 Marshmallow and I'm pretty happy about the result.
Now let's go straight to the pain.
Small introduction:
in lollipop I used to keep a small partition (8gb of 64 total size of the SD card) as ext4 used by folderMount to store whatsapp media.
During the configuration of marshmallow the system asked me to use the SD card as Internal memory.
As there where two partitions marshmallow asked me separately for both of them to format them as Internal memory.
I tried to backup all of the data on my sd before doing everything, but for some bad coincidence I had no sd port my MacBook and marshmallow didn't seem to be willing to show any sd card partition when connected via USB.
So, in a moment of extreme silliness and confidence, I decided to apply the transformation to Internal memory to the small partition, trying to convince myself that marshmallow was evolved at the point that would be able to manage the two separated partitions.
I think you've already know how the story ends up.
After rebooting I realized my excess of confidence, and tried to restore the content of the SD with all of the recovery software I found in the Web.
No success.
The strange part is that usually it's so hard to permanently delete something from any memory support, and it usually takes very long time to do it.
In this situation my small and slow smartphone has been able to completely erase over 40gb of content in the time of a system reboot: and it sounds very strange to me.
Actually the slower and more stubborn recovery tool took about 24 hrs to complete the scan, and for the majority of the sectors (like 99% of them) it said they were unaccessible.
So maybe there is something that u guys know and I don't that the internalizing process does to prevent future access to the SD sectors, and, who knows, maybe that process can be undone or somehow bypassed.
Really need to restore the content of that bloody sd card: it contains 1 year of photos and videos of my one year old son :-/

I think you can use the app DISK DIGGER PRO. it can restore many type of files.
actually I would like to know from some developer what does he think about all this: what does the system do when you tell him to internalize an sd? does he actually destroy the whole content of the sd?
Yeah it does
The Phone reformat all the sd and because it changes the format all data is gone
So no app will be able to restore any of the data contained in the sd card?
