[Q] Has anyone gotten Ad-Hoc mode on the Samsung Tab? - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone gotten Ad-hoc mode working on a Tab? I saw http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=854913 but I have seen a few responses saying no.
I am running FROYO 2.2 on the tab. If you have gotten it to work with a different OS, which one?
After I tried using the method above, I can't connect to any wifi networks, it doesn't show any even though there are a few in range. I tried loading the original files on, but there is still there error. Is there a way to reflash the device to the original firmware/where would I get the original firmware? I'm a noob at this, so I am really not sure where to get it.
Thanks,
~404

I used the method above on both froyo(arabic firmware)gingerbread JQ1, and also overcome gold no problems connecting to my nokia phone with joiku hotspot.
Could you please specify what errors you encounter or is it just that the wifi adhoc networks don't appear?

When I go to the wireless and network option, and turn on wifi, No networks are shown, even if there are some. It will then turn off the wifi and say error instead of off or connected.
I forgot to mention that i replaced the wpa_supplicant.config file. They said that there was a network option there that enables ad-hoc networks. I think the setting was changed to 2, but I'm not too sure, my co-worker did that. I believe I did replace it to the original though

Connecting to Home Network Problems. Help Needed Please......Perpetually Connecting

I cannot access any webpages using my tilt I only get the message "cannot connect with current connection settings" no matter what webpage. What exactly am I to change the settings to? I'm using a Linksys Speedboost with WPA2 security. The Tilt is picking up my network so I hit connect. When I look under Settings/Connection/Wifi I see my network but its just says "connecting" all the time. Shouldn't it say "connected"? Then I checked the Wireless LAN I see me network and the signal strength is full. What gives? I've disabled all the ATT data connections with the NoData program. I've also cleared all history and done a soft reset. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I presume you have tried removing from and adding the network to your Kaiser. And I presume you have rebooted your Kaiser and router without any effect?
Were you able to connect to other networks in the past? Have you changed any settings recently that might have caused the problem (by accident)? Have you tried the different power modes?
The problem might not be your Kaiser; it wouldn't be the first time it had something to do with the router itself.
Have you upgraded your router with the latest firmware? Is MAC-filter security enabled?
Just thinking...
Yes I've tried removing and letting the phone find the network again to no avail. I'll try again when I get home. The phone and router have both been rebooted also to no avail. I've never been able to connect. Just got the phone late last week. Not familiar with changing power modes so I haven't tried that. The router does have the latest firmware. I've see a few other networks besides mine listed. Several of them said unavailable and I'm not sure what that means.
Well deleted all the networks to let the phone fin them again. Now it says connected but still will not bring up any web pages.
Sorry to say, but I have no direct solution to your problem. So let's troubleshoot your problem.
Download and run VxUtil. The tool can be found here:
ftp://ftp.cam.com/cambridge/win/vxUtil.zip
Open the .zip file and install "vxUtil.ppc3_arm.CAB" to your Kaiser. Leave the rest of the cabs.
Try to ping your router, other computers on the network and internet sites. See what the results are and if there is a difference between LAN and WAN adresses.
If you own a Tilt, you could also try to remove the hidden proxy. Fix it by installing the folowing .cab found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=71206&d=1203325282
If it wouldn't help, you can restore the proxy here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=71207&d=1203325282
Have you already tried another brower? Like Opera mini? Find it here:
http://www.operamini.com/
Or you could try the 'full' version found here:
http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/
Let's hope you find the solution or at least a lead.

[Q] Wifi not connecting to infrastructure network (802.11x)

Hey guys, so here at PITT, the school runs a 802.11x infrastructure wifi network, and I cannot connect.
I am running HC v4. When I go into WIFI, the Nook will see the network. Then when I put in PEAP, my username, and password, nothing happens. I just hit "connect" and the nook does nothing. It is like it does not remember the settings I just put in.
It connects fine to the adhoc network on my phone (tether). Also, it connected to PITTnet fine before when just rooted, and with nookie froyo.
I tried doing this (with slightly different settings): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=974689&highlight=wifi
But it did not work. It is like the Nook sees the network, but just refuses to do anything with it.
Any ideas? Thanks.
I connect to an 802.11x network here @ work, and my recommendation is to hop on the market on another wifi connection, and download "Wifi ACE" to facilitate editing the config easier. If you can't download from market but have ADB working, you could manually install the .apk from here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-ace/
I will tell you - I've had spotty capability to access this network using HC v4, internal eMMC build v2. I have 100% success using Nookie Froyo and Phiremod, by comparison, using the exact same settings - I manually saved off the wpa_supplicant.conf file between installs. I experience the same symptom you do, I see the network fine, just refuses to connect.
Think we're just stuck till AOSP releases and we get a new version of HC on the NC.
Same as you, any other WiFi network connects with ease. It is just the 802.11x network I have problems with. It worked for me on HC eMMC v1 though, so if you haven't tried that give it a shot.

Got to test it out with my nook today - it worked great!
its not working for me. My buddy doesn't see it on his Evo 4G wifi.
Just tested it out and it worked great. No 4G in my area until October so I was running You Tube, which blocked here at work, over the tether and it it was really smooth. The app was painless to use, no configuration at all just started it and gave it SU access and off I went. My laptop connected right up.
Nice app/find.

im sorry to hear that but as i mentioned i didnt create it soooo ionno lol
I know most phones can't see the tether network for some reason or another

FYI-> I went to tether today and the 4G built-in app expired so i tried my restored wifi tether from my dInc.
it worked.
4g and 3g tested, both working.
not sure why this app didnt work before...
decrapped rom
I believe the reason most phones can't see it is because it creates a Wifi hotspot in Ad-hoc mode and not Infrastructure mode like most Wifi routers do. Android phones cannot connect to an Ad-hoc network, at least I haven't found one that does.
If you connect to this network from a computer you'll usually also see it listed with Ad-hoc mentioned or a different icon of some sort.
I have noticed that Apple's products can connect to an Ad-hoc network. I'm not sure why this limitation exists on Android handsets, it's quite annoying.
Most of the "official" carrier Wifi hotspot's do support Infrastructure mode, so that's why you can connect when using one of those hotspot app's.

It is because in Ad-Hoc mode there is no server assigning it an IP Address like you get with the infrastructure mode found in routers and other devices. You have to make sure that all the devices are configure with matching IP addresses (addresses in the same subnet and class), gateways, and subnets. Ad-hoc is generally a manually configured network where you configure each device. It is what we used to call peer to peer in the old days.
The app listed in this thread works great. Just to check ppl are turning on the wireless radio first? I know its a simple thing but you would be surprised how many times ppl forget that step.
I've been fighting with this app since I got it. I know the problem is with my laptop, but when I had the Inc. i could connect with no problems at all. I see the signal from the phone in my wireless list, just as an adhoc connection. I just can't get my computer to ever connect to it.
I know the error lies somewhere between the keyboard and chair, but if anyone has any ideas on what I should try, plz let me know.
Running. Win7 Ultimate 64bit
Thanks all!
it works!
The first WiFi device I tried to connect was my wife's phone (Samsung Captivate) but her phone would not find WiFi Tether signal.
But my rooted Nook Color did and it works fine.

Interestingly enough, I was able to use this quite well on my Nook Color running CM7 when they had 4g turned on in my area (for one day). After they switched it back off, I have been able to connect, but the data doesn't seem to go.
I don't get the correlation, because I was even able to tether it at work where I only had 3g, but the second they turned 4g off, it wouldn't tether from 3g. Frustrating.
I just want to note I am using it on a 3G connection. They have not activated 4G in my area.
I figured out what was wrong. The problem was that I was authorizing my nook exclusively, and while this works, it doesn't appear to be a permanent solution. You have to redo it occasionally when you reconnect.

having issues with this app, laptop connects and some sites work, speak easy speed test reports very nice speeds, but for whatever reason several sites will only partial load and then timeout. Forum based websites work fine and it seems youtube works also. Not sure why others won't.
I am trying to connect my laptop running Windows Vista Home to my LG revo. I can see the AndroidTether ssid and it is ad hoc. But when trying to connect it just sits there trying then has a message that "connection is taking longer than usual" then it gives a timeout. I can get a connection with my desktop running Vista Ultimate. Anybody know what setting in my Windows laptop that may have to be changed? I setup my wireless adhoc device props to match the LG revo settings. I found a new driver for the wireless network card and it connected just fine...DOH!
Just to mention for some people
If you still can't connect try checking if u made a static ip for your network adapter....just putting this out there
Sent from my VS910 4G using XDA App
OK. So we need a static IP address? And for the other poster.. how did you match the settings to the Revolution? I have been fighting this wireless tether since I rooted. All help and comment are awesome! Thanks guys.

Problem w/wifi tethering after install Gingerbread

Hi Forum,
I cannot get my Sprint tab to see my phone after installing Gingerbread. My computer can see the phone and connect it, but the tab won't. Before Gingerbread, I was able to scan and connect to my phone and tether just fine. I tried diff. wifi tethering app. Currently use Barnacle. My tab is not rooted, but that should not be a problem.

I'd have to say, untie your WIFE.. and then worry about wifi..
thanks!
I was in a hurry! Fixing the wife issue is going to be a lots more difficult.
my galaxy tab brick after falsh
which version of GB do you have installed? Is it the stock sprint update? Have you tried the WPA supplicant fix for it yet?
I using Sprint OTA Gingerbread, 2.3.4. Build number EF17. I have not tried the WPA supplicant fix. I did not have problem with this issue on Froyo. I will research on this. I would like some tips if you got them. Thank you !
I found a link on the issue, but require root. I am reluctant to take this step. It is not that I don't know how to use Odin, but removing root is a pain.
Here is the link to WPA supplicant if any interested.

from everything i've read, you won't be able to connect to ad-hoc mode wireless (most wifi tether apps) without the wpa supplicant patch. you might look into a wifi tether app that will do infrastructure mode to get that working again.
@ pvtjoker42,
Thank you for the tip. I did some further research and the Wifi Tether app works in infrastructure mode too. If any one interested, here is how you do it. Choose device profile- I chose Samsung Galaxy S. I also tested Samsung Galaxy Indulge. Under Setup-Method, choose Softap ( master). Now your Samsung Tab will see the phone. This app drains battery like no tomorrow, much more than Barnacle.

cannot get NC to connect to EVO 4g wirelessly

whether i am using the wireless hotspot that is on the phone or trying to tether it will not connect.
it goes as far as Obtaining IP Address from my phone via the tether. but it never goes further.
both devices are rooted...
anyone have any suggestions on how to get my nook color to connect to my phone...
Well I havent tried hotspot from my EVO yet, but I just tried tether from my phone to my nook and it worked. I am using tether version 3.1-pre108. I cant remember where I got this version from, but I think sprint is blocking tether apks from the market now, so I found it in a thread in the EVO section.
Here are my settings within wifi:
device profile auto
setup method auto
wifi encryption unchecked
change ssid AndroidTether
hide ssid unchecked
change channel 01
dont disable bluetooth unchecked
wifi driver reload checked
Nothing else is checked throughout settings except for disable wake-lock under miscellaneous, that is checked. I can also connect to my latop as well. I hope this helps.
i got it to work, but it looks like it only works when i have 4g. can i not connect to my phone via 3g?
Mine was connected 3g......I dont have 4g in my area.
cool, thanks. i think i figured it out.
appreciate it.
