My lock/power broke off and no way of fixing it. I'm running miui and very pleased with it so I'm not going to be flashing anything as I can't haha but I was wondering if I can map the volume buttons make my screen turn on so I can slide unlock. I can lock it through my phone but I can't make the screen turn on to unlock without plugging it in, getting a call/message or have it never sleep. So I'm just looking for a way to make my screen to turn on to the lockscreen.
Update: I couldn't figure out how to remap the lock/power button so I went with an easier solution. Widgetlocker has an option to where any hardware buttons can wake the device. Just thought I would post my solution for those who have the same problem.

i'm not sure if this answers you question, but usually i push my home button to wake up my phone then slide the screen to unlock it, just like how i do with my iphone previously, no settings is done with my phone
Yeah, same, I always unlock my SGS with the Home-button..
Oh. Did not know that. I don't have the phone yet. Was just reading some people's thoughts about the phone and they were annoyed about the Power button being used to wake the phone. Guess, I should've researched it some more. lol. Thanks for the info.
Either way, I think I figured it out on how to enable/disable the other buttons waking up the phone if I wanted to in that thread I posted. Should be able to wake it up using the other buttons as well instead of being limited to the power button and the home button. Just gotta have root and edit the keyboard layout then push back.
the menu and back keys are capacitative keys, not really ideal for waking with if the phone is carried in your pocket or something
is there any possible way to be able to touch the screen and return its from the timed out backlight insted of the power button then the actual unlocking....
Not sure about touching screen, but there's an app called NoLock that will make it so there's no lockscreen and hitting the power button unlocks it. Eats battery though.

Is there any way? Probably. Is it a good idea? Probably not. Just having the screen up to your thigh in your pocket would be enough to turn the screen on and thus drain your battery.
Not just drain your battery, but imagine calling people unexpectedly, random texting, somehow enabling options and selecting factory reset . There's a reason why there's a lock/unlock button.
Being a lefty, I wish you could turn the screen on using the volume buttons instead.

I can. Hold them for a second and the screen should turn on when you release them. If it doesn't let me know I'd like to investigate further.

Nope, not working. It turns it on using NoLock but then that just changes the volume too.
Im running Darkys 7 btw.

Holding the volume button does not turn on the screen, you probably touched the power button with you middle finger which holding the volume button with your thumb.
Widget Locker
Try the app WidgetLocker--it's a couple bucks but lets you turn on the screen with the volume buttons if you want (any hardware button). It will also let you customize your lockscreen with widgets and unlock the screen using the soft keys at the bottom if you so desire.
Mentioned this app in previous threads, should really start getting a cut from the developer.

You really should believe people when they say something works. Just because your rom works one way doesn't mean anything about everyone else.
Now if someone would give me a link to the roms which don't unlock due to the volume buttons, I might be able to fix that.
lmao love the music

I am not using a custom ROM. Maybe some custom ROM has that feature added but it definitely does not work on stock AT&T ROM.
Works on stock 2.2 Froyo leak ROM

That's not a stock ROM by any means.
I wish the volume buttons were lower on the case. I have a tendency to squeeze them with my finger when pressing the power button one-handed.
Hi, everyone!
Recently, I installed CyanogenMod 7 which is probably the reason of damaged Power button. I've been keeping it pressed for a long time with X/camera/volume up etc. Anyways, I've been using it for nearly a year now, so.. I still have warranty, but it's not the case. Since I don't want to send it back yet, I come up with this question.
How to power on my Milestone WITHOUT using power button whatsoever? Even entering bootloader mode requires me to press it. Any ideas?
Even impractical ones, I don't turn it off very often, but I need to know that in case of emergency..
tried plugging it into a wall charger while its off? it always boots up my droid automatically

Oh, thank you. As far as I remember, it happened to me several times, but mosstly - there is just waving battery icon.. thanks for response though!
Additionally, how to lock screen without using Power button?-.- or access sound/flight mode/turn off menu?
cm7 has status bar toggles for all of that, if you still have it installed. dont know if theres any way to access the regular phone options menu without using the power button though, sorry

Well, I turned on status bar widgets and Locking widget too, but.. it apparently disables auto-locking screen, instead of locking on demand..
The go to sleep status bar widget in cm7 interface settings. That's the one that shuts off the screen and locks the phone. Tried it myself before posting.

Geez.
I apologize for caused confusion, I didn't notice it at first... I set my volume up/down as waking buttons and widget for going to sleep
Awesome support, splashattack, thank you very much!
I am having same problem.
I connect my cell to my laptop and it starts. I am using custom ROM.
I want to rollback to stock, so that I can avail warranty on it.
Any idea how to enter bootloader mode without power button
I tried terminal emulator

But it reboots to OR not to bootloader.
Any solution for bootloader ? or any command?
EDIT
Its solved. I have assigned volume rocker for screen unlock,
I rebooted it using terminal emulator, Pressed and hold volume rocker + Dpad - up and I entered bootloader.
i am always thinking that a button at the front would have been great in order to unlock the phone easier....
try button remapper
First off: I tried searching. It returned dozens and dozens of posts about how to WAKE the phone with the trackball
Like many, I have a nexus one with a broken power button. I'm running Cyanogen so I can easily wake the phone with the trackball. I also have a widget to lock it from the home screen.
I would however really like a way to lock the phone with a hardware button somehow. Long press on trackball or volume buttons would be awesome. I never use the volume buttons anyways so I'd give them up if I had to.
Is there any way to do this? If so how deep would the integration have to be? New kernel? Kernel patch? Root access app?
Thanks, and sorry if this has been posted before. I swear I tried searching
It's a great idea actually. I can't see why Trackball Wake couldn't also be Trackball Sleep. I would love to see this implemented!
Perhaps someone would like to take up the challenge?
Screen off and lock
There is an application called Screen Off and Lock.
You can turn off the screen by long-pressing search button.
- Trackball Wake
- Long-pressing Search button sleep (screen-off)
This way I don't use power button at all.
That's pretty awesome! Thanks
A bit sad to lose the usage of my voice search though. But I'll sacrifice that over the hardware locking method!
I have a Galaxy S i896 (Rogers captivate model), been running CM9 on it for quite some time now and I never had a problem with it.
Until recently, my lock button stopped working. Thankfully, CM9 allows me to use the volume buttons to turn on the screen, and I can lock the device from the notification bar. However, I sometimes get that screen that pops up when you long press the power button (airplane mode, screen shot, reboot etc...) but I don't know how. Also, whenever I remove and re-insert my battery, the phone turns on by itself! So it would seem that the button is stuck somehow, and once the phone is turned on, it is being ignored.
I read somewhere that this is sometimes caused by rooting the phone, however I wasn't completely sure about how true this information was, and therefore my question is: does anybody know what causes this, and how can I fix it!
Thanks!

I also have this problem with a stock ROM. The power button doesn't work and i cant even flash another ROM in recovery because of that. It only turns on when putting the charger on or replacing the battery (turns on by itself).
It seems that your power button is busted. I had the same problem, though I manage to have a way to make things alright. If youre on a CM9/C10 youre good. Download button remapper at remap the capacitive search button and make it act as a power button. So, if you're waking up the phone you will use the volume rockers and if you want to sleep and lock, use the search soft key.
