Hello folks;
A quick question...
I have the latest SpeedMod, and in a lot of threads in the forum people recommend flashing an i-9000 modem with the kernel, with the concern of compatibility issues where you would have the i-9000 kernel with an 896/897 modem.
I haven't had any problems with the stock Rogers Froyo modem(uxlj1) and SpeedMod. Should I flash a new modem anyway? What will the benefit be? Am I just not noticing real problems that are there, or is there something to the Rogers Froyo Modem that works with SpeedMod without the need to flash a compatible modem?
Also, what could go wrong if I do? Seems some people have trouble with data and bluetooth after flashing a new modem.
If you have working bluetooth I believe there would be no need to flash another modem
Thanks for that.
Whenever I flashed Speedmod without changing over to an I9000 modem with it, I had horrible voice call issues where it would sound like I had my vocal cords removed and talked through one of those voice boxes.
Hey,
I skimmed through the forums and saw various posts about people asking what ROMS were safe for the i9000m but haven't seen anything about sbl.bin
As most of you probably know, the i9000m was plagued with sd card corruptions pre JL2. Then, that miracle FW introduced a new sbl.bin that solved some stuff and the sd card corruption went WAY down. Now, with the arrival of Gingerbread and new bootloaders, i was wondering if it was safe to use these new bootloaders on our i9000m devices and still benefit from that miracle cure that the JL2 bootloaders provided. Its pretty much the only concern i have thats stopping me from going to Gingerbread.
Thanks

I'd also second this question but add on to it the following:
boot.bin
sbl.bin
Both safe?
In addition:
Can we go back to eclair/froyo if we want, in order to reflash official from kies in Canada?
Can we use our own CSC?
Does this support the 850 band, or do I need to flash the KC1 modem?
Will the phone die?
We thank you all for your time
1. yes
2. no
3. yes if you use the method here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12156313&postcount=438 or just keep using JL2 or KC1 modem
4. mine hasn't yet, been on gingerbread for about a week or so now
moved to gingerbread and can't see why you would want to go back to an earlier firmware.
custom rom and especially a custom kernel transform the phone completely: much faster, much better functionality and better battery life
you can still connect to kies, but why? odin and cwm provide a much better means to upgrade and change firmware and open source development is much better than anything Bell will ship
things to realize: (1) the sgs is incredibly resilient and robust, most "bricks" are not bricks at all but recoverable with download mode and reflash (2) there's lots of expertise to see you through every situation and every rom chef and kernel developer has its loyal fan base, so try for yourself and find the combination that works best for you
do we need to update the bootloader if we come from KC1 and we want to upgrade to JVH?
not to use kc1 modem with JVK rom no: but if you are coming from 2.2 froyo rom to 2.3.3 gingerbread JVK rom, you need bootloaders to move from the 2.2 rom to the 2.3 rom
the sequence is:
1.change rom from 2.2 to 2.3 stock JVK with GB bootloaders (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1047924)
2. change stock JVK rom to custom JVK rom (deodexed, zipaligned and rooted) using cwm sd card zip method
3. if desired, flash compatible performance JVK kernel (using odin or cwm) note: many roms include kernel, check features list -- this step is only to replace the included kernel that got you rooted or to swap it out for one that has different performance features (speed, battery life etc)
4. activate 850 mode in JVK modem or reinstall KC1 modem (flash in odin or use cwm sd card zip).
5. go into cwm recovery, perform backup and then add custom modded theme if desired -- do the backup of the full functioning system before doing theme changes, that way if anything goes wrong you are starting from the completed install and don't have to repeat everything!
5. load titanium backup and restore apps: use market to update and then set up your launcher
6. do another backup!
Seems more complicated than it is. Along the way if anything hangs step 1 is always pull the battery and reboot. If that doesn't do the trick, step 2 is pull the battery and use the 3 button control to go into recovery mode, reflash and reboot, and if that doesn't work, use the 3 button control to go into download mode and reflash the part that hung, and if that fails, go into download, connect to odin and start at the beginning!
shamelessly stolen from all the good guides that dot the xda landscape and a surfeit of trial and error!
Here is what I did. At first I was on KC1 (updated trough kies). Later I flashed a 2.2.1 JS8 based ROM, without modem or boot loader (so these two were still KC1)
I wanted to try gingerbread. So I flashed the gingerbread starter through heimdall (boot loader and kernel)
I booted in recovery and installed my custom JVH ROM (took the rooted deodexed JVH ROM, removed a few stuff, edited gps.conf for north-america and replaced Swype with a fr-CA enabled-one), upgrading the kernel (to default JVH) but not the modem.
So my modem is still KC1 (850 MHz working out of the box) and JVH works fine.

You can use this procedure (as stated before) and use the latest modem with 850hz support
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12156313&postcount=438
I got JVH running with a full flash and 850hz
What exactly does the 850 band give us? I've never switched anything on or off in regards to bands/modem and my phone has always given me a signal and a data connection. What exactly do you get when you enable the 850 band? Also how do you know if it is enabled or not?
Some places in Canada have poor or no 1900 MHz coverage. In this case you will want 850 MHz.
I noticed my phone used 850 MHz mostly indoor and in rural areas. To check you need to go in service mode (I don't remember the code by heart but it starts with #*#*)
@t1mman
Thanks I know but I think it's easier to say on KC1 as I have no problems with this modem.
no problems
been on jvb for a week with zero problems, this phone was previously sent in for repair prior to 2.2 jl2 release... so things seem to be good... i flashed ugkc1 modem for 850 band
Ok so here's the deal.
I flashed JVK 2.3 (Darky's Rom v10 rc6 DarkyCore Kernel 2.2) and so the baseband is JVK i'm assuming
I'm having issues regarding the 850 band.
Q: what's the best modem for Bell users ?
Q: am I able to JUST flash a modem ? if so, how ? (through ODIN or CWM?)
Q: Do I just put the modem file into the modem thing in odin and hit flash? can I flash a Froyo 2.2 (JL2) modem onto my Gingerbread (2.3) ROM ? If not, what's the best Modem to use ?
I'm also having issues regarding downloading MP3's -- they all fail like those mp3 finder apps. But I can preview. WTF?
also my GPS isn't working - does a modem fix this ?

I am running KC1 - I have tried JL2, JL2 with JM9 GPS fix, JK4 but KC1 is the best to date and gives me best GPS performance to date. If you use non "native Bell" modem ie new Gingerbread modems there are steps to take to ensure 850MHz still works. You will need to review this forum I think. I have not tried such modems to date. You can use Froyo or GingerBread modems - no issue.

Yes, CWM is best. I have many modems in the SDCARD root, quick and easy to change.

Use CWM - get the modem files from Perka's File stash - look for the 850MHz section

Se above. But you should search this forum under GPS. If GPS has never worked you may have to do some hardware work. ie the contact from the PCB to the GPS antenna is pretty crappy and you may have to disassemble the SGS, stretch the contact spring a bit then re-assemble.

If using Odin(Definitely easier to use CWM as Jim said) you put the file(make sure it is for odin and not CWM) into the "Phone" section. And if on Gingerbread you're probably using CWM3 so if flashing it via CWM make sure it's a CWM3 version of the modem zip
I have a 7" tab that was given to me by work, for work. I use is mostly for the 3g hotspot, but I've noticed that the internet lags pretty badly. It constantly hangs, and freezes up. I have a samsung fascinate that I'm running miui on, and when tethered to it the internet runs great. I'm wondering if this is a radio issue on the tab, or if I maybe need to flash another kernel to fix the lag that I am experiencing with the stock software. I don't want to flash any roms, as I don't really use the tab for anything other than as a 3g hotspot. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Ok, I see that there is an EC011 modem available. Is that compatible with the stock froyo, or is the stock froyo the issue? I'm starting to think that the modem isn't the issue, and I'm going to need to flash GB or a custom froyo rom to fix the issue. Anybody else have this issue besides me?
So.....I've decided to flash the 2.3.4 leak. It's my first time using heimdall, so I want to make sure I have the method straight and have all of the items i need. I just need to unzip the file, then select the appropriate files. Then, I need to select a modem and recovery. Do I use the zImage for the kernel and the recovery, and is the EC011 modem compatible with the gb leak? Any help before I mess something up would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
the modem (which you call a radio) should have little to no impact on the rom itself.
most kernels should have the recovery built into the zImage file, so only put it in the zimage slot in heimdall. Only put something in recovery if there is an actual recovery file in the tar you have extracted.

Yeah...I was at work, and got my terms mixed up. I ended up flashing the stock gb leak with heimdall, then flashed the modem.....soft bricked it somehow, then reflashed the rom. All came up well, but the 3g hotspot was still slow and buggy. I decided to try barnacle wifi, which I use on my phone, and that solved all of my issues i was having. I'm guessing the 3g hotspot verizon app is just flawed. After installing barnacle, I ran a few speed tests. I consistently hit 2.5mbps down with almost a meg up. With the 3g hotspot app I hit 300-400k down, and 500-600k up.
I have T-Mobile Galaxy Tab 7.
After using Overcome for a day, I think I prefer Froyo. Could anyone guide me as to how I can go back to Froyo 2.2? Also, in the process of upgrading to Overcome, I upgrade the tab to 2.3.6 gingerbread. Is it possible to just uninstall the Overcome and use gingerbread? Please guide me thanks.
yes, just follow overcome guide again to restock.
That is by using Odin to install the GB-Stock-Safe from overcome site.
With that you will get GB samsung stock, without anything overcome at all.
You will get the dialer, so in theory you can make phone call with the right modem.
Unless you really prefer Froyo stock from T-mobile that doesn't have dialer, you can get download the firmware and flash it. (if you can find your firmware version)

So all I need to do is install GB-STock-Safe with odin and I'm back to gingerbread? If that's the case, I would like that, I like gingerbread. Also, after I installed overcome, I did get the dialer but when I installed my AT&T sim card, it wouldn't detect it at all. I then used Galaxy S unlock tool from the market to unlock. I was able to unlock it and then the Tab was able to recognize the AT&T sim but when I dialed a number, it would automatically hang up. How do I fix that? Is there something I need to install to get the phone working? thanks a lot!
have flashed a different modem before?
T-mobile has a different frequency. You may be able to flash AT&T modem or other modem via CWM recovery.
There is a modem thread in the dev section.

Could you give me the exact directions please? I'm new to this. thanks
you have managed to flash overcome 4.1, you can't be that new.
First go to your setting, About, and note down your phone Baseband
that is actually your modem version.
Now, if you restock back to GB Safe stock, you will not be able to do what I said below, because this is based on CWM recovery, which is included in Overcome Kernel.
The good thing is, once the right modem gives you all the functions (call, sms, data) you can then restock to GB stock safe and the modem won't change.
Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1069727
and download a few of the modems. Maybe a JPZ, a KM2, an AT&T modem, and T-Mobile modem.
Put them in your sdcard like when you flash overcome rom.
reboot to recovery
choose to install from sd card
locate the modem zip file and install it.
reboot and try out your data, sms, and phone calls.
If no good, reboot again to recovery and try different modem.
It is a hit and miss for some people.
If you already restocked and has no CWM recovery, you can still use Odin to flash just the modem.
wow it's working! i downloaded JPZ modem and did installed from internal sd and now i can finally make phone calls!!1 thank you so much! btw, can I now go back to stock froyo or gingerbread and still keep the voice? also, if I were to just use odin to flash the modem on a stock foryo galaxy tab, i should be able to make phone calls right? again thank you so much!!!
yes, that is right. The modem should stick, if you downgrade to GB stock safe.
Having said that, if you downgrade to Froyo and the package contains a modem.bin, then it will get overwritten. Then you need Odin to flash the modem again.
What network are you in? As long as you are not in T-Mobile network, you should be fine. I myself own a T-Mobile galaxy tab, using JPZ modem in Australian Optus network. I can make calls and have 3G/HSDPA data connection.
I'm using it on AT&T... i don't have a data plan, but if I were to get a data plan, would it work with the JPZ model or do i need to use anothe rmodel? thank.s
Hard for me to say. I don't know much about AT&T
It seems like HSDPA in AT&T is 1900 MHz
I am pretty sure most networks are on 2100 MHz (Europe, Australia, Asia)
Can you get a data plan SIM and try it out, and try the AT&T modem in the modem thread as well?

I tried AT&T modem but I lose voice communication.
weird,
this external link
http://www.talkandroid.com/21900-sa...ers-bell-hacked-for-voice-calls/#.TzDI56fnitI
implies that modem_bell_i9000.zip lets you make voice call using euro rom, and has data as well.
Hey, I was trying to install ICS after downgrading back to gingerbread from overcome.
So, after get the CM9 and gapps from humberos website, I put them along with the overcome kernel in the root of internal sd and reboot in recovery however, after flashing the CM9 zip, I cannot see the overcome kernel anywhere. So i proceed without flashing that and after rebooting i get stuck at galaxy tab logo. can you help? thanks
You wasted quite a lot of effort.
You should go straight to ics from overcome.
try flash overcome kernel using odin (the tar version of the kernel)
Then boot to cwm and flash cm9 rom again followed by humberos cm9 kernel for P1000.
But if you have patience, wait a day or two. Humberos will have newer rom+kernel that fixed slow wifi and quite a bit.
Meanwhile you can flash stock safe again while waiting.
