Do ROM Manager updates clear /data? - Nook Color General

I'm pretty sure I recently read something to that effect, just wanted to verify. This is the first time I've gotten a ROM Manager alert about a new nightly and I'd rather be sure I should continue to do things the "hard way" before I do something stupid and nuke a highly tuned setup.
Rodney

Only if you choose to do so. When flashing a rom from rom manager it will give you an option to wipe cache and data once you choose to flash.

[Q] Rom Manager made bad back up image...HELP PLEASE!!!!

I rooted my hero using the 1 click root from the market. I then used rom manager to make a back up image, then flashed cyanogenmod 7.0.2 on it. There was no Market, my home button didnt work, and a few other quirks so I decided to go back to my original os. I clicked on the manage and restore in rom manager. It went thru the process and said restore complete. when it boots up it has overlayed images, and says "the application Settings(process.com.android.settings)has stopped unexpectedly.FC. As i go thru the set up, many of they options are greyed out and not accessable, then when i get to "finish setup" it FC's and says" the application Setup(process.com.htc.android.htcsetupwizard)has stopped unexpectedly. Then i get a black screen. Just wondering if I can get a good Back up image from someone to put on my sd card, then do a restore? I am pretty noob at all this, so any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!
Mmhmm...first, 1 click bad, second, rom manager...worse in the wrong hands...
Why don't you download the gapps and put it on the root of your sdcard and then flash it after the 7.0.2 and then you'll be ok I'm sure if you take a little time to figure out you may be the only person that can fix your issue. By that, what I mean is in the install steps I'd bet it mentions to install gapps and if it doesn't let me know and I'll get the op to add that step.
As for all your messed up permissions try running fix permissions in rom manager if you can get there.
~maybe I set it too high...
i tried that first but coulnt get it to work, so i downloaded the rom directly from rom manager. The only thing i can do on the phone now is thru clockworkMod recovery
You can do fix permission in cwm also, I think under advanced. Just whatever you do, do NOT format recovery or misc if those options are in your recovery.
If you're in recovery though you're in the right place to flash. It's just
Wipe data /factory reset
Advanced -> wipe dalvik cache
Back
Install zip from sdcard and choose the7.0.2 zip and then thesame thing with gapps.
Reboot system
Edit, you could also just try to restore again from cwm. I'm assuming it holds the backup.
~maybe I set it too high...
ok, im off to bed...i will try this in the morning and post my status, thanks for your help so far
Did you ever wipe between installations and flashes? I always play it safe and wipe boot, cache, data, system and dalvik cache when I am flashing different ROMs and when restoring. Try going back into recovery and wipe what I posted and then restore your backup.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA Premium App
I couldnt wait, I had to try it....YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so very much. I already had Rocksteady and Gapps downloaded on my comp, so i put those on the sd, followed your steps and BAMM! Works great! I can not thank you enough!

[How-To] Upgrade/Downgrade any MATCHING ROMS without losing /Data

Hello
My name is Alvin and I really want to help the people who are new to Android hacking/rooting/flashing/roming<made that up . This post may not be interesting or super helpful, but I want to help people with a question that's not usually mentioned.
Upgrading/Downgrading, that's the Technology world right now. It's important people know how to keep up by upgrading without having to lose all their data.
Upgrading/Downgrading Difficulty Level: 2
(Scale of 1, being Beginners, to 10, being a developer)
To upgrade a ROM without losing data, you must me under these certain circumstances,
The ROMS match. THAT'S IT. Well what do I mean by "Rom Matches"???
The /data has to be compatible with the newer ROM.
The ROMs that are not compatible with the same data.
NC Stock to any other ROMS
THE DATA MUST BE WIPED BOTH GOING FROM STOCK AND GOING BACK TO STOCK. THE DATA IS NOT COMPATIBLE.
The ROMs that ARE Compatible:
CM7<>CM7
CM7<>CM9
CM7<>CM10
Custom ROMs<> Any CM ROM.
Note: Downgrading the Android OS and keeping Data is fine, but some items may be broken or incompatible after being modified in a newer Android Version.
NOW you read all the circumstances and determined that your Nook Color is OK to upgrade+keeping /data partition, here are instructions if you don't already know them.
Open any type of Recovery. CWM or TWRP. SD or Emmc.
Go to Mounts and Storage at the bottom
Carefully select Format /system
Next, select format /cache
Now, we are leaving the /data alone.
Click Back or use the power button to do so.
Click Install Zip from SDCARD.
Find your .zip file that you want to flash to upgrade/downgrade your Nook.
When finished, you may apply GApps which is optional. GApps was formatted with /system. If you need to find gapps, go to: goo.im
Reboot and the New ROM should look like it was used before by you.
Note: The location of these instructions are based on C.W.M. All instructions are same on other recoveries.
If this post helped you, I would appreciate a thanks because it would make my day.
If this post provides any false information, typos or errors, please tell me so because this is a great learning experience for me.
If there are any questions, I will answer them withing 48 hours. Valid till 11/4/12. After that I'll check periodically.
P.S I love smiley faces.

Hey -- I'm just about to try these steps. It seems really self-explanatory to me, I'm more than a beginner but not quite at developer. I'd say I'm like a 6 or 7 in your list.
However, the one thing I haven't tried yet is upgrading to a newer ROM. I flashed Nameless v2.0.2 for the HTC Desire C and now they're at version 5. I just did a FULL backup using CWM Touch for the Desire, and I'm about to do what you suggest. I have a custom lockring, battery icon and boot animation, I guess I'll just have to push those three things back on afterward? I think everything will go smoothly, I even have a separate SD card to flash from ^^
Anyway, I guess that's not really a question... I just want to make sure these steps apply to any ROM... but logically it seems like it would.

Hey, if i downgrade my rom (Android N) with only remove the system, and install the lower rom (Android M) is it will delete the installed application and the data too?

[Q] Daft CWM / LightJB question

I'm not allowed to ask this in the dev forum as I'm not up to my 10 posts quota, so sorry for posting this here!
In the LightJB instructions instruction 3 is "wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik-cache, wipe system"
I've got CWM installed (LQ4 and CoCore 6.0) and the options in the CWM recovery menu are "wipe data/factory reset" and "wipe cache partition".
Am I right in assuming that I should choose to do both of those two options, and then also in the "advanced" menu do the "wipe dalvik cache" option too? Just checking! Once I've done this once, I'll become a natural at it...
Cheers!
Matt
I guess you're right... But why don't you just flash a CoCore E kernel with TWRP.. Wouldn't that be much easier?
Its way more user friendly than CWM....
And yes, do have a backup of everything as Factory Resetting and wiping data is going to erase all your apps, etc.

I guess I'd just heard more about CWM than TWRP. I might be a noob here, but I'm not put off by command line-type stuff. I can still remember how to join multiple uuencoded text files together to get lovely pictures of Winona Ryder appearing on my screen in 1993, before I'd even heard of a graphical browser.... happy days!
Cheers for the pointer!

Matt,
Read my thread with CWM guide (see my signature) and i think you will be fine.
Do a Nandroid Backup before start to flash a new ROM.
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Advanced -> Wipe Dalvik cache
1. Download the ROM from the link given in the article featuring that ROM. It should be a zip file.
2. Connect your phone to your computer via USB and mount its storage card.
3. Copy the downloaded ROM to the root of the storage card.
4. Power your phone off and reboot it into recovery. This will involve using a combination of your device’s hardware keys. Once in recovery, you can navigate its menu using the volume up and volume down hardware keys or your phone’s trackball / optical track pad if it comes equipped with one.
5. Use the ‘backup and restore’ feature of recovery to backup your existing ROM installation, software and data. This step is known as performing a nandroid backup. ALWAYS perform a backup before flashing a custom ROM, UNLESS you can afford to lose everything that’s on your phone at the moment.
Note: ALWAYS choose to perform the following steps 6, 7 and 8 UNLESS the ROM you are attempting to flash is an updated version of the same ROM that you are currently using, and is compatible with the current installation’s data. It is usually mentioned with the update whether you can install it over a previous version without wiping its data or not.
6. Get back to the main recovery menu and use the option ‘wipe data/factory reset’. You will be prompted to confirm this action. Select “Yes – Delete all user data”.
7. From the main recovery menu, select ‘wipe cache partition’. You will be prompted to confirm this action. Select ‘Yes – Wipe Cache’.
8. From the main recovery menu, enter the ‘advanced’ menu. From this menu, select ‘Wipe Dalvik Cache’. You will be prompted to confirm this action. Select ‘Yes – Format/System’.
9. From the main recovery menu, enter the ‘Mounts and Storage’ menu. From this menu, select ‘Format/System’. You will be prompted to confirm this action. Select ‘Yes – Wipe Dalvik Cache’.
10. Go back to the main recovery menu by pressing the back button and select the ‘Install zip from SD card’ option.
11. Select ‘choose zip from sdcard’ to get a list of the files and folders on your SD card. Scroll to the ROM’s file that you copied there in step 3, and select it. You will be prompted to confirm this action. Select ‘Yes – Install file_name.zip’ where file_name.zip is the name of the zip file that you are trying to install.
12. Wait patiently while the ROM is flashed to your phone via recovery.
13. Once the installation is complete, head back to the main recovery menu if you aren’t there, and select ‘reboot system now’. Your phone will now boot into the newly installed ROM.

Done, thanks!
My last question - when i've rebooted, I'm prompted to sign into my Google Account and re-install my apps from the google backup. Is this the "best" way to do it, or is it better to use alternative sch as Titanium? I'm not bothered about lost data, the only data I care about is in my gmail account anyway.
Cheers!
Matt
Reinstall your apps with that app you make backups. If you do it with Titanium, then go for it, and restore with Titanium.

Thanks. Its that sort of common sense stuff which I've found missing from many of the guides - they tell you how to root / flash etc, but leave nagging other questions unanswered - perhaps because the answers are so obvious to the authors that they are just second nature.
As it happens, I didn't bother with a Titanium backup as I wanted a clean phone - I've been trying to resolve a strange issue where my wifi goes really slow and stuttery after the phone has been on for a few hours. No-one else seems to have the issue, so I suspect it is down to at least one of my apps causing some chaos. With that in mind, a fresh install with no baggage seemed to be the best way to go.
(I used to suspect the Facebook apps (particularly Pages Manager) but I don't think they are the cause)
Thanks for all the help!

For me cwm is more user friendly and more straight forward compared to twrp. I once tried twrp and after I mount system suddenly it said there's no os installed and I can't boot my phone. Luckily I can still enter download mode to flash back fw with odin. I don't understand how twrp works..haha :silly:

It was my pleasure, Matt. :highfive:
Well, for no other reason than that I wanted to tweak a few things before I started to live with LightJB, I chose to restore my phone using the CWM nandroid restore.
Bad move!
It all seemed to work fine, but on restoring I get the message that "Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped". Mildly worrying, but moving on...
Then I came to try to reply to a sms message from my wife. Pressing in the reply box didn't bring up a keyboard. Odd.
I went into other apps and found I couldn't type there either.
Went into settings, and neither the samsung keyboard nor the swype keyboard appear to have been re-stored via the backup / restore.
Any hints?
Matt

[Q] What's NOT getting wiped when I flash?

I have successfully flashed @shinobisoft's latest CM11 build and it runs fine. However, I wanted to do a "clean" install. I used philz recovery to install the new ROM. Prior to install, i used the clean up for new ROM install option and let it run through. To be sure everyhthing was "clean", I also wiped dalvik, cache, and even user media. I also formatted everything EXCEPT external SD, as that is where the .zips are located for install.
I installed ROM and gapps "modular" as well a chrome add-on, and rebooted phone.
When ROM loaded, I was greeted by the "choose language" screen, which is what i expected to see. I let it "settle" (Galaxy S2 experience) for about 15 minutes or so before I touched anything. When I went to complete setup, my wifi was already connected and the phone was linked to my account. It was using Apex launcher and the settings I used prior to updating.
What am I NOT wiping/formatting prior to installation?

Sounds like /data isn't getting wiped or formatted.

One other thing... Have you set up Google to track your installed apps/etc? If so, Google will automatically restore them.

I did a full wipe for the initial install. But for the newest build i wiped system only and flashed on top of the previous build. I can do a full wipe again and reinstall the newest build to see if it corrects my issues. But i can assure you i wiped everything when i installed the previous build.

Umm... I'm seen a bunch of references in your posted log that refer to the old sdcard path ( as in stock, /storage/external_SD. New path is : /storage/sdcard1 ). This is telling me that you did NOT format your /system and or /data partition when you installed CM for the first time. Obviously the only way to remedy this is to do a fresh installation following the instructions I posted in the OP.

I changed the "auto restore" setting so it won't automatically install my apps and tried another "clean" install with the same results. It's almost like I'm restoring from a previous back up! I made sure to wipe and format everything twice just to be certain. Installed only CM and gapps zips, wiping dalvik and cache before booting system. My result was the same as previous..... Choose language.... WiFi connects, and my settings restore.... I am NEVER asked to login to my Google or Cyanogen account(s)......
I'm about to back up and wipe everything, use fastboot to format the partitions? Ideas? Thoughts? Suggestions?
Perhaps restore my "rooted factory ROM" from TWRP back up and start from there? Or restore from .kdz?
Maybe try a factory reset from Settings after installing? Kind of a long shot but that's what I had to do after flashing back to stock when nothing seemed to have changed ...

Question installing TEKXodus.

So I rooted my phone and flashedTWRP. What's my next step to flashing TEKXodus?
I'm confused about steps on the guide on XDA.
Do I just go into recovery and install the whole .zip file? Or do I install individuals mods?
Thank you.
Make sure you download the correct version depending on if you have 910T or 910T3.
Follow the steps in this thread for rooting and installing TWRP:
910T:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...sy-steps-stock-odin-n910tuvu1anih-cf-t2903733
910T3:

MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR CURRENT STOCK ROM WITH ROOT!!! Can not stress this enough. If you need to go back to stock, and you download an Odin file from a shady site, you have no idea what you're putting on your phone. It's sooo much easier to just backup your stock. Make sure ALL options are checked under backup. Save this file on your PC or external SD card just to be safe. I always keep a backup copy on my PC.
Put the ROM zip file on your phone, either internal or external SD card. Some recommend internal SD only, but I have had 0 issues flashing from an external SD card. I guess if you use a cheap card you may have issues, but if you have a name brand class 10 you should be fine.
Do a full wipe.... When you are in TWRP, choose wipe, then factory reset. Then goto advanced and check system and data and wipe again.
In TWRP choose install then navigate to the folder that has the ROM zip file... and install.
Do another factory reset wipe (do not wipe system this time, just goto the wipe screen, and default swipe is factory reset.
Boot your phone, and LEAVE IT ALONE. First boot will take a LONG time. 10 to 15 minutes sometimes. Once you get to the setup screen... LET IT SIT for another 5 or 1 0 minutes.
Complete your setup process as you normally would do. There will be a popup saying it needs to reboot to complete some actions. Go ahead and reboot.
Once everything is installed and working as it should you can continue on.
Keep in mind there are some mods that come pre-attached to the TEKXodus rom. To flash these, boot into recovery, goto Mount -> check SYSTEM. Goto Install, select "Up a folder" to get to the root folder, then goto System then Mods. There you can play around with different mods. The Note 5 screen off memo.apk will just need to be installed like you would a normal downloaded APK and is not flashed. You only flash the .zip files.
BEFORE YOU START MESSING WITH DPI settings (if that's your thing) make sure you do a backup first. Some DPI settings will cause force close on touchwiz, and you'll be stuck unless you use another launcher. Basically before you install Xposed, any Xposed module, or play around with the build.prop file make a backup first. Can NOT stress this enough. I'm constantly tweaking things, and will make a backup every 3 days just out of habit. Delete your previous backup after creating a new one as the files are quite large (5GB+ depending on what you have installed). ALWAYS keep your stock backup that you originally made.
I do not recommend using the TEKXodus Rom's Tweaks for changing DPI settings. This basically just edits the build.prop and makes a global DPI change. There are SEVERAL samsung apps that need to be changed back to 640 DPI (the stock setting) or they will force close. It is MUCH better to install the Xposed framework, and then install the "App Settings" module and change the DPI on a per app basis. Personally I changed "System UI" only (not android system) to 420DPI. This will give you a smaller notification bar but not mess with alot of the other apps. You can then change the DPI settings using App Settings on a per apk basis. Some I like at 420, some at 480, some even in the 300s. After changing a setting you will have to reboot to see the change. You used to be able to just kill the app and then re-open but that doesn't seem to work anymore.
If you DO decide to change the global DPI setting, MAKE SURE you install xposed and App Settings first, then read this thread to change all the nescessary apps back to 640 stock DPI or you will have issues.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...anging-note-4-dpi-settings-to-change-t2923408
If you need anything clarified let me know, typed this up in a bit of a rush at work.
Don't forget to hit that Thanks button if I helped
So I followed the instructions above, however, after the flash I just hit reboot instead of doing another factory reset wipe and the phone never booted after the reboot. So I went back into TWRP and restored.
What did I do wrong? Was it just the fact that I didn't do the factory reset after installing the new ROM?
More than likely yes that's what caused the error.
Do this just to be safe.
Boot into TWRP.
Do a FULL wipe (advanced wipe) and wipe System, Data, Cache, Dalvik, etc)
Re-Install TEKXodus
Do a "Factory Reset Wipe" BEFORE booting. Literally as soon as it gets done flashing, goto TWRP wipe, and just do the default factory reset (do not wipe system this time)
Then you can reboot.
The error I end up with was the kernal is not seandroid error. I'm guessing I picked the wrong ROM install?
