Overclocking Question CM7 Size-agnostic SD Card - Nook Color General

I am running nightly version 102 off an SD card which I set up per verygreens instructions. It works great, but I was thinking overclocking with dalingrin's latest kernel. Here are my questions:
1. While the previous instructions (by verygreen) indicated I should unzip the OC zip file, rename the kernel "uImage", then copy to the 1st partition of my SD card, it seems like what I need to do now is copy the zip file to the 1st partition of the SD card, boot into recovery mode and the kernel will install. Is this correct?
2. What can I do if I want to go back to my original kernel? Do I just reinstall a new CM7 nightly?

1. Correct
2. That or reflash the same one
Rodney

Thanks! I appreciate the quick response.

Assuming you are staying on SD card (as I am), you can copy the OC zip file to the SD card and reboot it. It will install the OC files. I stopped copying the OC files directly to the nightly zip file. I also stopped copying both the nightly AND the OC to the SD card at the same time. I had install troubles doing that. Sure, it might work for some but it didn't for me (at least not consistently.)
I always install the new nightly first, then check that OC in setting is gone (good confirmation the nightly did get installed since they don't show the zip explode on the screen anymore), then copy the OC zip file to the SD card, let that install and then check that 1200MHz OC is available in settings (confirms OC installed.)
If need to go backwards on the nightly, I copy that to SD card, let it explode and it also removed the OC kernel. Then I can decide if I want to add the OC in again (which I usually do.)
It's a few more steps but I have better control if things start to go weird.

Restoring ?

I'm currently running phiremod nook V3 found here(followed the instructions too):

I'm trying to get the OC kernal installed but can't get adb to recognize my nook. I'm guessing this might have to do with me not hooking my nook up to install the correct drivers.
Can I use this guide to get my internal partition back to stock software?

Does your Nook boot at all? Or does it just stay on a black screen?

Go there for help.
Thanks for the quick responses. Im currently still running phiremod. No problems with it yet. Just flashed the app fix.
I more curious if I went by those steps I mentioned above if I could get back to stock.

Yes, they would work, burning an SD card, and copying the 1.0.1 (or whichever version you want to restore to) zip file to the SD card, and flashing that.
As for the OC kernel, Dalingrin has a .zip file that you flash from Clockwork just like how you installed phiremod. You'd want the one that is for CM7.

So I was looking at the right thing. D'OH!
So from my reformatted SD card I'll download this to root of SD with CWR
-Froyo and CM7 Only
DOWNLOADS:
eMMC:
Froyo and CM7 (eMMC installations only) CWM update: http://www.multiupload.com/IJK50K41GG
Power NC on
Install from SD
Select file and install
Remove SD
Reboot?
EDIT: Do I unzip that file or leave it as is?
Many thanks.
Do not unzip. Copy that zip onto your SD card that has CWM burned to it. The actual process of flashing it takes only a few seconds, not as long as flashing the whole ROM takes.
Got it! Thanks again for clearing things up for me. Things are a little different than my dx.

Dalingrin OC mod won't install to CM7

I installed CM7 (RC4) to a SD card following the instructions im http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957 and it works fine. Initially I couldn't get it to install the gapps, but I reinstalled putting both the CM7 and gapps zip files on the boot partition. I later put the Dalingrin OC kernel zip file on the boot partition, but when I reboot, it just ignored that instead of installing it.
Is there another way to upgrade the kernel?
You did exactly this?
OC Kernel installation instructions:
After you have a running CM7 by doing the steps above.
Get CM7 OC kernel from Dalingrin's thread. Unpack the zip file, the result should be a file with the name "kernel" and some other stuff. Rename the kernel file to uImage.
Shutdown your nook and take the uSD card out (make sure the nook is not plugged into USB bus or it'll boot into eMMC then).
Plug the SD Card into the computer, copy uImage file you just created to the first partition (the partition name would be "boot") instead of the existing file with this name (might want to save the original file just in case).
Now you are ready to go again.
You'll need to repeat these steps every time you upgrade to a new nightly build, because they carry their own kernels with them.
Now I am embarrassed! I confused the instructions for adding Google Apps with the instructions for overclocking. Thanks for getting me back on track.

[Q] How to get CM7 after 1.1 Root, directions?

I had my 1.1 NC rooted using the GMPower method (there's also the monster rootpack?). I once tried to install CWM from the market but that caused an infinite reboot into recovery. Since then, a lot of things changed and I'm clueless on how to proceed especially with CM7.
I would like to install CM7 but which method is applicable. I found two:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=960542&page=16
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
My questions are will these work for my 1.1 rooted NC (GMPower method)? What's the difference and which is better? Can the latest CWM be installed onto my NC without causing the infinite reboot?
I appreciate any help.

Second link in your post for installing CM7 on SD card.
I did that, infinite loop. When I install CM from the sd card, it installs fine, but as soon as it reboots, it goes into CM 3.0.0.5 from the internal memory. Should I just wipe /boot?
definitely don't wipe /boot or it won't boot up. So what process are you following exactly? You created a bootable SD card with CM 3.0.10 right? You'll need that for a ext4 system (which CM7 is). That's step #1 in the post nthesame already linked to. Then copy the CM7 .zip (the one for encore final, should be about 90mb) to the SD card and install it using CM recovery (install .zip from location on sd card). If you do this, it will boot into CM7.... make sure to remove your SD card though after installing it, as the default is to boot to SD if it finds any boot files on it.
I used an 8gb image from one of those running 3.0.0.6, not 3.0.0.10, so I'd assume it was good.
It used to be a dual boot, but I removed that and just tried to overwrite stock with no success.
When I tried to install first, I followed the wiki to the tee, nothing.
I just got my nook today, and am about to start the process tonight... but from what i have read so far, your trouble may be that you used CWM 3.0.0.6 vice 3.0.10... seems something was changed to stop the infinate loop...

[Q] Updating to the latest nightly on CM7 SD installation?

So I'm booting from a SD card into CM7 7.0.2 currently. I'm using a custom boot file so I can choose to hold down the home screen button if I want to boot into the stock 1.2 OS instead.
I only have this single 2gb SD card to use atm. What would be the proper process to update to the nightly 69 build from here? I need to make sure that when I update, my current SD card is in there and that's where the install is saved to. I had an issue prior where I booted with an alternate SD card (which I no longer have) and it installed to the eMMC. That wasn't fun as I had to do a complete restore.
Thanks!
I am booting from an SD card.
To update, I put the uSD card in the PC and then just copy the new build zip file to the uSD card.
Then I put the card in the Nook, press the N + power button and when I see the "Touch the Future of Reading", count to 4 and release the buttons. Don't count to slow. I noticed one time the TTFOR disappeared and it booted into the Nook software. I just shut it down and did it again.
The Nook will automatically see the new zip file, expand it and load the new build. Once done, it will delete the zip file from the uSD card.
I noticed the newer builds automatically reboot the unit but if yours doesn't, it will stop at "Flushing Cache" and sit there. Leave it alone until the screen goes dark (a couple of minutes) and then reboot it (N + power button). You should get the Android. and about a minute later the CM7 spinning logo.
You are updated. And you don't lose any apps or data either!
If you are overclocking, I would set it back to 800MHz before you do this as a precaution.
Finally, there is an easy way to add overclocking to a new build. You just need the overclock zip file, the new build and WinRAR 3.80. Let me know if you want that info.
Well that worked as you said, thanks! I did have one problem but I fixed it myself. As I mentioned, I have a modified boot file which loads the Nook OS if I hold the N button. So trying to get into recovery or have the CM7 noticed the .zip file by holding Power+N didn't work. Luckily I still had the original u-boot.bin file and was able to copy it back onto the SD card and then I was able to get the update installed.
As to the OC, I assume I'd just put it back on the same way I did with the original.
I've read your post, and a few others but I'm either not understanding (my money is on this one!!!!) or missing a step.
I'm running Nook Color Stock 1.2 on emmc and CM 7 on the SD card.
I've tried using ROM Manager as well as copying the latest nightly to the /boot partition of the SD card.
If I boot into recovery and update the zip from the SD, I always end up over-writing the emmc of the nook, losing stock and all my apps, instead of the CD card being updated.
What am I doing wrong?? Would like to upgrade to the latest nightly. But I don't want to screw up stock (hate having to restore and redownload all the apps every time).
Thanks
No matter what I do, I always end up over-writing the emmc instead of updated the SD card.

All you have to do is put the update zip on the boot part' of the sd card and boot up the sd install like normal and it'll see the zip and automatically flash it for you.

If you're booting CM7 off uSD, you can forget about the "ROM Manager".

You are probably using the install zip option. You do not do this. You just put the zip on the boot partition, boot into recovery and the reboot. DO NOT flash anything.
Sent from my LG Optimus V using Tapatalk
Let me try to clarify... when they are saying boot into recovery... they aren NOT meaning Clockwork Recovery... they mean using the boot menu (press "n" button when you see the Cyaonogen logo) and selectin boot from SD card and Recovery. That is the SASD rocovery (install) mode and will install the update zip file from the root of the boot partition.
Thanks for clarifying DizzyDen!!! That's the part that I was screwing up
Like I just screwed up the Stock again...but that's alright...live and learn
Updating the latest right now...then I'll be putting stock back on emmc
Thanks again for the clarification
Updating to the latest nightly on CM7 SD installation?
I'm a newbie so please have some patience. I'm trying to do the same thing, update my cm_encore_full-159.zip to cm_encore_full-177.zip. I boot from a microsd card to Android. When I install it I pushed a button during the early boot process and went to a menu. Changed "boot device" from "emmc" to "SD" and "Normal" to "Alternative". When I turn on the Nook Color after it installs, I do nothing and it boots to Android but if I put a button it goes to the menu where I push the volume down button 3 times and I boot to the stock Nook Color. So, if I copy the cm_encore_full-177.zip to my microsd card, go to the menu, change the "emmc" to "SD" and "Normal" to "Alternative, this should update my 159 to 177 without losing any apps, email, etc.? Thanks

1. in bold text above... select "Recovery" not Alternative...
2. you either move the SD to your computer to put the update on the boot partition of the SD or you have to mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 to a directory (I created /sdcard/boot for this) and push the update to the BOOT partition.
Nook Color How to Update to CM7 Nighthly
Good Day,
What a fantastic website! I am new to the forum. Could you please answer the questions or provide a link to the answers?
1. What utility and procedure would I follow to back up the stock Nook Color partitions in ROM to include the stock Nook Color apps I have installed?
2. What utility and procedure would I follow to back up the apps I have purchased from the Android Market place for CM7 running off the SD card?
3. I have update-cm-7.0.0-encore-signed.zip installed. I want to update to cm_encore_full-177.zip. Do I use win32image to "burn" the new nightly to the SD card? Or, do I drag and drop the new
nightly to the SD card? If yes, on which directory (folder) on the SD card do I place the new nightly build?
Thank you!

Try my best to help.
1. I don't deal with stock, so can't help here.
2. I never intend to run any backup when booting off uSD, can't help.
3. Assuming you're booting off uSD, then just copy the new .zip file (do not rename, do not unzip) into the boot partition (root folder) of the card. Insert it into the NC, boot it into Recovery. When it's in recovery mode, it'll fully automatically do the update then deletes the .zip file, you don't have to do anything, just wait until it shuts itself down then you power it up.
I am running the following - CM7 - nightly build 08022011 on SD - Dalingrin's OC kernel 2.6.32.9 @ 1200MHz NOOKcolor
I am trying to update to a newer nightly build. I have the file downloaded on the SD card but can't get it to update.
Where does the file have to go?
I tried to reboot into recovery mode and that didn't do anything.
Any help would be great.

Booting CM 7 from SD - can I add OC kernel?

Hello all,
Quick question. I created a CM 7 ROM for my SD card and love it. However, I did not add a OC kernel when I created it. My question is can I add a kernel to the SD card now without having to recreate the card?
Thanks
Nevermind! Found the answer after a little digging.
what was the solution?
Yes you can!
Download an ext 4 kernel like the 4-24 1.3ghz one for example
Open the file and delete the meta folder-
then rename the uimage to "kernel"
Done!
Now just take the whole .zip file which you original downloaded and modded and just drop it on the SD card and pop it in the nook. Make sure to reboot into recovery and it will install.
Hope that helps
Actually it was a little different. I downloaded dalingrin 04011 zip and there was already a uimage in the zip and I just replaced the uimage that was in my boot directory on the card. Now I have the option up 1100Mhz in CM7. Not too hard at all.
