First time Galaxy S custom ROMing - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a SGS running the stock Android 2.2 ROM and want to install Gingerbread!
I'm a total newbie to this and need help. Can someone help me out with this, please?

If GB is all you want, update with Kies... It's officially out!

Please do some reading first. There are so many posts talking about this

1) familiarize yourself with the forum layout and rules
2) read ALL the faq's
3) do not do anything until you are completely comfortable with what you are doing
5) don't be afraid to ask for help, but don't expect to be nursed, you must take responsibility for what you do, and make the effort to learn
6) don't panic if it all goes wrong, the galaxy s is very hard to kill
7) enjoy!

This will sure help you. It's very easy I updated to Gingerbread. Only thing I lost is 'Ask on connection' option in 'USB Settings'.

You should ALWAYS ask before using someone else's base work. For this rom in particular, the original dev states in his OP that he does not want anyone using and reposting any of his work. I would recommend getting his permission asap to avoid him popping over here and possibly causing an issue. Not saying that will happen, but C.Y.A.
Remember too, it states in the forum rules you must get permission before using anybody's work, and its just good ethics to ask.

[Q] Rooting Optimus Black V20T

Can anyone tell me how to root a P970 V20T? I have searched the forums and can't find a guide for anything beyond the V20S. Either a step by step guide, or a link to a post that is already in place would be great. I have tried following some of the guides for the earlier versions without success.
If it helps the phone was bought network free for use in the UK.

Look into my noob how to. You have to patch the bin/fls files. Assuming you have a kdz file, first extract it, patch with cwm, flash via smartflashtool, in recovery flash superuser.zip, reboot, done

Nice reply - not - and I asked as I am not psychic. Your Gingerbread (v20x) link goes to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1480392
You then have a list of instructions which end with 'Dont exactly kno, what it does, but as far as I get it, it roots the device and installs CWM touch. Credits go to poster, if it is successful. '
I would hardly describe this as 'your work', you hadn't even bothered to verify it before stealing it without having the courtesy of naming the original poster, so perhaps you should also take care about who you label lazy.
Another point is that there are 2 options on the list, namely the link above and the following link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1456274
The first points to v20x and the second points to v20* which to me would essentially be the same thing, hence asking which I should follow. That is being sensible - shame someone who happily takes credit for other peoples work is so shallow as to be unaware of how poorly they have laid out the links they have ripped off.

Hey if you feel like writting your own how to... just go ahead. I just tried to be nice to newcomers like you and put together mist of the necessary information in one place. If you think, you can write a better, nicer, more complete one, I surely wont be the one person, that stoos you from doing so. I know how many hours I ve spent on writting it. If you dont like what you see... try to turn your head in another direction maybe.

1) if u have downloaded a file from first link, it's enough. the guide also has a link, but it's older JB firmware.
2) just extract the contents into a directory and set the pda as the md5 file.

There is no such thing as "best rom". It is all personal. Try them and see which one suits YOU best. In case of any troubles just flash back to stock as already mentioned (or get cocore cwm/twrp and create memory snapshot before any kind of modification - so you can revert your phone to that working state). Think windows restoration point that actually works.
