[Q] link2sd - XPERIA X8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

how do you think about link2sd?
i've been using it for a long time , but i'm thinking about move app to sd card by setting in cm setting.
can someone give me a solution for me?

Many forms, from making a backup of the app's with Titanium or similar, then delete the partition Link2app, and you can retrieve the app's backup.
Another possibility is one to one pass with Link2app app to the phone memory and then App2SD to the card.

Link2Sd is superb..i'm using it on my floyobread v12 from doixanh...& doesnt having any issue

thanks , i'm back to link2sd

I have a question with Link2SD. I have using it when I have EWJet Rom. However, when I flash 2.2 or 2.3 ROM, the ROM seems to read the 2nd partition created for Link2SD, as a results all files (photos and others) will be saved in this 2nd partition and as a results, I am not able to access these files when I connect to my PC as PC only recognized the first partition.
Hence, whenever, I flash 2.2 or 2.3 Rom for testing, I have to removed the 2nd partition so that any files saved would be in the first partition.
Anyone has a better solution?
Thanks.

Well u cant look into ur 2nd partition using PC connection, coz link2sd only partition those apps to this 2nd partition & u can only look into it using titanium BC from ur phone...maybe there's a software outside that can look into this 2nd partition on ur PC...google it & see..

I have tried to google it but can't find any programme. Do you have any in mind? Thanks.

what do you need for link2sd...ext2 or 3?

I think your talking about the difference between apps to ext or froyo's built in apps to fat?
if so:
apps to ext tricks the os into thinking that a special ext partition on your sd card is your data partition. this way all app data goes to the sd card and saves your data partition completely.
pros:
all apps are compatible
no data space used on the data partition
the phone thinks its saving apps internally
Apps are very accessible for backup
cons:
you have to format and partition your sd card (this really isent hard and can be done in recovery)
if the sd card is pulled, mounted to the computer, or dies, you cannot access your apps.
you have to specify an exact amount of space on the sd card dedicated to apps that can no longer be used as storage space(unless you use linux I suppose... but it would be pointless to save stuff there besides apps)
apps rely on the speed of the sd (this usually isn't a problem though)
not all roms support it. (there are usually work arounds though)
Froyo apps to sd puts the bulk of the app onto the regular partition of your sd card (no special formatting required) but still saves data to the data partition.
pros:
saves space on the data partition
no special formatting is needed
is more secure for app developers
because you dont need the extra partition, you'll have more free sd card space.
cons:
still uses some space internally which isn't bad unless you have a crazy amount of apps or some very large data hogs.
if the sd card is pulled, mounted to the computer, or dies, you cannot access your apps.
apps rely on the speed of the sd (this usually isn't a problem though)
only Froyo roms support it
the internal memory is the fastest best place for apps, but if you need more space then by all means try one of the above methods
they both get the job done in their own way.

thanx for the info but how do i partition my sd card so that apps can be transfered
There is an option in recovery to partition sdcard. U will lose everything on it though so save what u want to the computer. Backup your apps with titanium backup or equivalent. And as always do a nandroid backup in recovery and save to your computer as well with titanium backup u made before u repartition. If u need ext 3 or for there are options for that in recovery too.
Edit: put backups back on SD after partitioning so u have your nandroid just in case and can restore apps in titanium

U should get 1.7.0. Just my opinion. U should have an option to partition your SD. Once u start its self explanatory really. Just make sure u do everything I told u before about the backups and saving to your computer so u don't lose anything important as it will completely wipe your card clean. What Tom are u trying to flash afterwards?

[Q] new to cyanogenmod + Titanium Backup + Link2SD

Hey,
I have decided to give CyanogenMod a go for the first time.
I've been rooted for some time now - running a stock Gingerbread 2.3.4 rooted.
I've heard so many good things about CyanogenMod and I have had an itch for a bit of a change, that I decided now is a good time to give it a try.
I was hoping you guys might be able to help me clarify a few things first though.
I have Link2SD installed and setup. I have linked a couple of apps using and I was wondering if anyone knows how it works with Titanium Backup?
What I was hoping to be able to do was:
Code:
1)
Make a back up of some of my apps + their data using Titanium Backup - Some of these apps have been moved using Link2SD
2)
Install ClockworkMod Recovery and make a full nandroid backup.
3)
Make a backup of all the contents on my SD card - from the fat32 partition primarily.
4)
Install CyanongenMod using ROM Manager
5)
Redo the ext2 partition on my SD card and reinstall Link2SD once CyanogenMod has been installed
6)
Reinstall Titanium Backup and restore all the apps I backed up.
I was hoping that by doing the above I could hang onto all the custom settings I have in some of the apps.
For the apps that have been linked using Link2SD, will Titanium backup restore them properly as long as that ext2 partition on the SD card is there?? Or am I going to run into issues?
I have done some searching on these forums but there seems to be no clear cut answer.
Any help or advice would greatly be appreciated!
Thank you
You'll be fine - just make a full Titanium backup and a nandroid (just in case).
Do a full wipe, install CM with gapps, install your apps2sd, then restore your Titanium backup...
Titanium Backup will just restore the apps to the /data partition (or the ext if you have app2sdext enabled), but since link2sd is setting up individual symlinks for each app, those probably won't be carried over when you restore with Titanium Backup. You will have to redo those apps. But this may be time to look into a full app2sdext option. It is much simpler than link2sd and there aren't any noticeable performance hits (unless you do data2sd).
Good catch bass - I missed the Link2SD detail!
@danger-rat @bassmadrigal
Thank you guys for giving me some advice.. it is much appreciated!
So the app2sdext option can be done using dark tremor?
I was looking at dark tremor previously when I was trying to decide what method to use to relink apps.
Do you guys know of a good tutorial to go about setting it up? Is it done pre install of Cyanogen? Or post install?
My other concern about moving apps to the SD card using methods like link2sd and dark tremor is recently I had a situation where my ext2 partitions filesystem actually became corrupted. I ended up having to a 'fsck' on it to repair it ( I am pretty sure I got lucky with that ). Using the app2sdext do I still have the options to decide what I move to my SD card?
You can use Darktremor or S2E as the popular methods. S2E is a bit more intuitive (its an app in the market, with a front end GUI).
Install after you've installed CM.
As far as corrupt cards, just make sure you backup from time to time. Titanium or nandroid should do the trick. The advantage of having an ext partition is that once you have the partition, you can reformat it without losing your regular SD partition...
i would also recommend S2E, recently went from dt to
s2e and its working great.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
I remember seeing you mention s2e once before! At the time though I couldn't use it since I wasn't running CyanogenMod
That sounds like a good plan.
What do you think of this
Code:
1)
Do a Titanium Backup of my apps+their data
(including ones that have been moved using link2sd)
2)
When I install CyanogenMod, setup and install s2e
3)
Install Titanium Backup and start recovering my apps.
Since Titanium Backup should restore apps linked via
link2sd back to the default /data directory, I should just
be able to relink them using the s2e method?
I was wondering something else to actually.
@danger-rat you have mentioned in the past that you do not like the most recent version of the ClockworkMod recovery due to stability and reliability issues (I have seen a few other people say this as well). If this is still the case, can you recommend a version to install? From Rom Manager itself, can you choose a different version of ClockworkMod recovery to install?
Sorry for all the questions!
EDIT ------------------------------------------------
Just after I posted this I noticed there is an option in Rom Manager "All ClockworkMod Recoveries" - It looks like this option will allow me to install older version of ClockworkMod?
I use CWM 2.5.1.4 and install via ROM Manager, just as you suggested...
Thank you sir for suggesting a version and confirming I can do it via ROM manager.
Hopefully I can try this in the next couple days. Will report back success/epic failures!
Thank you baseballfanz as well!

Why posting a question in general section???
Thread moved.
hey sorry I wanted to ask one more question...
Since I plan on implementing s2e I will have to reformat my ext2 partition to ext3 or 4 (I think it said ext4..)
My question is, what should I do with my fat32 partition?
After I backup all the data on it, should I reformat it as well? Then after I get CyanogenMod installed, move back only what is important - Titanium backup directory for example? Or copy everything that was on it. There will probably be a lot of useless/old files on there that aren't really useful.
EDIT ---------------------
Sorry Mr.Clown for posting in wrong section.. I'll post correctly next time!
i went from dt a2sd to s2e with no need to redo anything on my sd card. i had ext4 already.
if you use amon ra you can change ext 2 to ext 3 or ext 4.
Sorry, I was gone all day and away from a computer. Glad others chimed in. But to start, S2E and DarkTremor's a2sd both are not selective on which apps are installed to the sdcard. It is an all or nothing approach. That is the difference between app2sdext and link2sd. With S2E, you just install it and open the app. Select the checkboxes to move apps to the sdcard and then I recommend moving the dalvik cache as well (as it takes a lot of space). Reboot, and any apps you install/restore will be automagically put on the sdext partition.
And to answer your last question, if you already have an ext partition on your card, there is no reason to change it. It may say ext 3 or 4 is needed, but I am running ext2 on mine without any issues (I have been too lazy to take the time to change it). Just make sure the ext partition is wiped (which can be done in recovery under Mounts and Storage). The fat32 can be wiped, but it isn't necessary. Although, if it has been awhile, you may want to consider it, just to get rid of some of the stupid folders that devs can't figure out how to keep them out of the root of the card.
@bassmadrigal
thanks for the response man!
All or nothing eh? I will give it a try and hope for the best! At least then I will have more flexibility in the amount of apps that I can have!
I think I will just reformat the entire card since it has been a while. There is so much stuff on the card now I don't really know what is what anymore. I will keep a back up of it though juuuust in case.
I think the ext2 partition might have some files left over from link2sd so I think I might wipe it out as well and start again.
I have since removed all the apps I moved using link2sd just to calm my nerves a little bit (ha!).
I am currently trying to purchase titanium backup but it looks like maybe the market is having issues. It is stuck on "Authorizing purchase..." seems like a few people have had this.
In the mean time I will install the recovery image and do a nandroid backup!
Just as an FYI, if you redo your partitions (ie repartitioning your sdcard through the recovery), that will erase and format both partitions. I think by default, clockworkmod will do an ext2 partition, whereas Amon_RA gives you the option between ext3 and ext4. One thing to keep in mind, in the past, with ClockworkMod v3.x, it had been known to cause issues with partitioning cards. I don't know if that has been fixed in the v5.x, but I know it doesn't exist in v2.x and it also works properly in Amon_RA.
All or nothing really isn't a bad approach. I have a class 4 32GB Sandisk, and I don't seem to have any speed problems. Then, with some of the apps that have a large amount of data, I will move those individually with Titanium Backup. Two big ones are Google Earth (16MB of frickin data), and Firefox (I don't remember how much, but it is still a large amount). But I had to move those because I was running out of room in my internal memory (I have a lot of apps installed).
I was actually just about to update this thread!
I have been busy since my last post!
I have since installed clockworkmod recovery, done my backups, installed cyanogenmod, and am just in the process of going through it.
I FINALLY got titanium backup pro key to install.. I think there must have been something wrong between google and the titanium backup app, but after like 2 hours of trying it finally went through!
I think I am okay with the "All or nothing approach" as well. I know now that I need to start to take backups WAY more serious! So if I ever run into a situation where my ext partition dies, I won't be devastated!
I think what I will end up doing is reformatting it all tomorrow at work. I will turn the phone off, remove SD card, format using a Linux system at work, place card back in and go from there.
To restore my ROM Manager backup and my Titanium Backups I just have to copy those folders back to the SD card (after the format) from the backup I made of the SD card prior to formatting it (sorry if I am sounding repetitive, I can't tell if what I am saying will make sense to anyone other then myself lol + plus I am EXHAUSTED!)
That's awesome though its working for you. I have a class 10 8 gig kingston SDcard and so far its been great!
So when I setup s2e (I have it installed, but not configured!) I should select the check boxes "Applications, Private apps, and Dalvic Cache"?
You mentioned that you use Titanium Backup to move certain apps like Google Earth... I was just wondering in what direction you were moving them? From the phone to the SDcard, or from the SDcard to the phone? Sorry for probably another really stupid question I just wanted to make sure I was following you correctly!
Thank you again for all your help though. Things have gone smoothly so far
In S2E move applications, private apps, dalvik cache and optional too download cache.
As for moving data to sd card individually by Titanium, you are moving the data from internal memory to sd card
Yes, all you need to do is copy those folders back, but if you restore any of your nandroid backups, you will reset everything in your system back to the time before you installed S2E. So, I would only do that as a last resort. But, Titanium Backup does not have that limitation. It is just restoring the data to whatever the system is setup to do.
Once you do get everything up and running properly, it would be beneficial to do a nandroid. But as far as a lot of backups, you can set TB to run on a schedule to back up your phone every so often while you are asleep. And then, I just make sure I do a nandroid before I flash ANYTHING.
And ditto for what baseballfanz said. I never bothered with the download cache, as that is stored on a different partition within the phone (the /cache partition). Unless you resize all your partitions, it is probably pointless to move it. And yes, I am moving the data (ie the saved games/settings etc) for the app to the sdext partition with Titanium Backup, but you probably won't need to do this for a while (I have 213 user apps installed according to TB).
@bassmadrigal and @baseballfanz
Thanks guys for all your advice!
Sorry for the million's of question, I'm learning a lot from you guys though!
So.. Cheers!
Nandroid is similar to Acronis (imaging software) for PC so I definitely follow you when you say that restoring an Nandroid backup will erase anything I have done since doing that particular backup.
Good to know that moving those folders back onto the SDcard is all I have to do so now reformatting the card isn't as scary! Oh and I have to make sure I grab the Titanium Backup License file - Sorry I just read this is the old method!
I will definitely take your advice and produce a Nandroid backup once everything is up and running just in case! I have been thinking about it and I figured I could automate a backup of the Titanium Backup folder and the clockworkmod folder by using the rSync app. I could just copy everything to my NAS during the night, which would ensure I have two physical copies just incase my SD card decides to dead.
thanks for clarifying the direction of the data being moved using titanium backup. I figured it was that but wanted to be sure. I still have a lot of learning to do with that app to get fully familiar with it!
I'll be setting up my two new partition today and hopefully I can start restoring apps later this afternoon. Will report back my status.
Thanks again for the help!
cheers

I highly recommend using CMW for making the partition. I've had some problems making them through my PC. With CMW you just set the amount of size you want it and wait till its done.
Then install S2E.
yea its better to make it by cwm and its very easy....
but make sure you have the backup of you sdcard before partitioning...
Hey ! I just googled about partitioning sd card and found that CWM may brick your phone.. is it true ?

If your phone is rooted, follow these steps -
1) Download root explorer or file manager app from market.
2) Open the app
3) Go to system/app
4) Delete the following files

Apps disappearing from EXT4 partition
Hi everyone. Since I see that at least part of this thread seems to be talking about Link2SD, I wondered whether anyone might be able to offer some insight into the problem I am experiencing.
Before that however, let me explain that I started off with an 8GB micro SD card with a 500MB EXT4 partition. I had been fast running out of space in the internal phone memory, and my SD drive itself was also filling up fast. When I installed Link2SD I managed to regain a considerable amount of free space on the internal memory.
The problem is though that once I had linked the majority of my apps to the EXT4 partition and backed up the device in that condition with CWM, once I rebooted the system all the apps that were linked had disappeared. However there are still some 244MB of files on the EXT4 partition that Link2SD says are in use, and I cannot delete them.
I then purchased a 16GB micro SD card from Samsung, and tried to restore the CWM backup to that card....my apps were missing apart from the few that remained on the FAT32 partition and in the phone memory....I should mention that this also happened before I installed the CM7.1 ROM.
Now things have really become problematic. I decided to remove quite a few apps, then download the latest version of Link2SD from the apps Market. But although there is now plenty of space on all partitions I keep getting the 'insufficient storage available' message, and I cannot install anything. I also did a CWM restore on the original 8GB SD card with the same result. This is why I cannot lay the blame fully on Link2SD, as there has to be a glitch somewhere in my installation.
FreeSpace [Root] shows the following on the 8GB based system:
Cache free space 20.7MB
Data free 16.6MB
Ext free 265.0MB
SD-card free 959.1MB
System free 48.2MB
So what gives? I really don't understand what's going on. I am running the latest CM7.1-RC1 Cooper-Grif ROM build number GWK74, with Kernel version 2.6.35.7-CL-562111 [email protected]#1 with all updates necessary. This is costing me more time than I can afford to lose on this, and I really need to find a solution once and for all, preferable without having to reinstall everything again from scratch, which is what I intend doing once the official Cyanogen Mod becomes available finally.
Thanks in advance, and apologies for the long post.

Make partition in cwm yet easy but...it will format your sd...on minitool is better if u have lots of thing on your sd...
regards,
•ƒγяύs ργяσ™•
I got some problems doing this. This is what I did:
I had many apps installed and moved to SD (8gb class 4), so I made a backup of the SD content.
I formatted it, and created 2 partitions (6.8gb and 515mb) using Minitool Partition Wizard. Both are primary and FAT32 (if I create the 2nd partition as EXT2 the phone says SD is damaged).
Moved my backup content again to the 6.8gb partition and rebooted the phone.
Looks like everything is right but Link2SD says "second partition not found".
What IM doing wrong?
Would Link2SD detect that 2nd partition if I flash my phone and I start installing apps now that my SD has 2 partitions?
IMHO from what I've experience, Link2sd does not accept fat partitions. I had the same problem.
Are you looking for the correct type of partition?
Start Link2sd>menu>More>recreate mount scripts and choose FAT32/FAT16

So what gives? I really don't understand what's going on. I am running the latest CM7.1-RC1 Cooper-Grif ROM build number GWK74, with Kernel version 2.6.35.7-CL-562111 [email protected]#1 with all updates necessary. This is costing me more time than I can afford to lose on this, and I really need to find a solution once and for all, preferable without having to reinstall everything again from scratch, which is what I intend doing once the official Cyanogen Mod becomes available finally.
Thanks in advance, and apologies for the long post.

[Q] move file to the REAL EXTERNAL SD

peple, i can't believe is so hard to find information about this big problem.
HOW CAN I MOVE INSTALLED APPS TO MY EXTERNAL SD??
I tried all "App2SD" in google play, but looks like Optimus 2x mount its SD in a different way, so what these apps does is move apps to/from internal memory (it is not the same as internal sd??? why 2?) and internal sd.
So i boght a 32GB sd for just videos and mp3???
I googled and found a link talking about "Mod Install Location".
Well, this "Mod Install" doesn't work too. I can't install news apps in external sd nor can i move installed apps.
No one bottered with this situation too???? Is impossible to move installed files in Optimus 2x do the external SD?

What exactly that does?
But i want to try another ROMs. There is not another way?
Another question about this SD problem: looks like that after flash roms and firwares the internal sd will be totally wiped. Well, so Titanium Backup is useless for Optimus 2x, as it doens't let choose directory for backups. Solution?

+1 on CM7. That ROM will render your internal SD useless as EVERYTHING can be thrown to the external SD.
I have Titanium Backup Pro and there's an option to choose the backup location in preferences. I'm pretty sure it's also present in the free version.
(TB is very useful for me. Enough for me to purchase it.)
If you are using app2sd from market to move your application to sdcard, meaning you can do it manually from your application manager, each and every app you click will have a button to move to sd. App2sd market app just simplifies this process. Please note that this method only moves some app files to the sdcard not all of it, it will still leave app dalvik and app user data on the internal memory.
The real app2sd/app2sd+/data2sd that creates a link from your internal phone data partition and relocate your data folder to external sd are script based, and you have to make a ext3/4 partition on your external sdcard in addition to your fat32 partition. This is what you need If you want to totally move all data to external sdcard.
I have not seen ppl making tutorials using this script in o2x forum, because the 1.5gb app space is good for most people, unless if you have alot of games in your phone. For what I know the app2sd+ script is universal for all phones, you may just need to make some modifications to the script to make it work on every specific phone type/model.
About the flashing firmware wiping internal sd, I have not encountered such issue. For what reason do you flash a firmware? I havent tried flashing rom the official way since you can just use cwm to flash rom, but I flash baseband alot of times, no internal sd wipes, but it does wipe data partition.
TB doesn't let you change the backup folder like that. You have to copy the "TitaniumBackup" folder with a few backup files to where ever you want and then the app scans for folders with backups.

But i will lost the 8 GB of this "internal SD" or i can still use it?
You have games installed in the external SD? They run as faster as in the internal?
Thanks

After flashing a ROM or firware i just open TB and it will recognize the old backups? I just install TB and then overwrite with the old folder?
Thanks

If i use the external sd with ext3/4 using the entire space, i will able to send file using usb, bluetooth, etc? I mean, there is any colateral?
Moving all data to MicroSD make the apps run slowly?
2 big games are enough to almost fill the entire internal memory.

Well, maybe is my enlglish that is horrible, but that is what i understand reading this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26191714&postcount=3
"Installing this file WILL fully wipe your device, including the Internal SD. Back up!"
So:
1 Changing the ROm will wipe the internal sd?
2 Changing the firware (firmware and baseband are the same thing, correct) will?

If you use app2sd+ script method, everything will function normally. A class 6 or 10 sdcard can perform as fast as your internal phone storage. You may wear your sdcard faster though since it is being regularly used and accessed.
The only problem is to fine the script itself that is specifically customised for o2x, I myself do not know how to do it, although I used it before for my HTC Desire phone, but that was long time ago and the script was integrated in custom roms since htc desire only has 150mb app space.

Yes, all threads will say that, its just cautionary purposes. I just recently reflashed my baseband to v20c a a month ago using smartflash, it did wipe my rom data, but not my internal sd. But just incase, make a backup of everything, it doesn't hurt to do that.

but to use apps2sd +script i need to have a partition ext3 or ext4, right? This partition in ext3 will work with usb, bluetooth, etc?
It is a good option to have the enitre microsd in ext3 instead 1 partition in ext3 and 1 in fat32?
Thanks

The ext partition will always be mounted for android system, so you cannot access via pc. You need a fat32+ext3/4 partitions combo.
First you need to know how much storage do you need for apps, please note that I think the internal 1.5gb app storage will be left unused if you decide to link your data (which will fool android system thinking it is phone memory) folder to your external sd.
We have talk too much on this topic but I myself is unsure whether you can find the script to run on o2x. Maybe its time for you to take some time on how to actually find and modify one so it works for o2x. I cannot help you on that at all. Keep us posted if you have any progress.

But can i alternatively make a backup of big games in the sd so i don't need to download 700 MB every time i want to install it again? As already said Titanium Backup will not do that. I could cut and paste only the backup of the game i want to sd, but Titanium show the name of backups in a way wich is dificult to read among many files. Plus i am not sure TB will backup all data of the game.

Re-flashing a ROM Question

I just have a quick question. I have a Samsung Galaxy Exhibit T599n and running Beanstalk 4.4+ rom. I am having a few issues with the rom after a few month, such as random reboots, issues with PC connection (Phone only runs in Charge only mode, and phone does not pop up the option to use charge only, camera, or media mass storage modes when I connect to PC) and also no longer connects to Kies.
My question is, if I re-flash the SAME version of the rom that I have installed (I have the most recent version) over the current version I have installed, will I lose my apps and settings? Just want to know what to prepare for if I reflash. Should I do that and get to keep my apps and settings? Or is a factory reset necessary to fix my errors?
Do a factory reset that should do it .. if not it might be hardware problem.
EDIT: You can use Titanium Backup if you have root acess to backup all your apps.

Excellent, thank you.
One other question, I had a problem with this last time I did a factory reset. I have my SD card partitioned to install my apps on there (Phone only came with 1GB internal, and would only hold a couple apps) so my SD card is 32GB, with 8GB partitioned to install my apps on. I remember having trouble with them last time I tried to flash a new rom and ended up having to reinstall Beanstalk from scratch and completely wipe the app partition as well.
Ok soo if i understood , you rom that you gona flash on your 32 gb sd card and flash from that also you can get app link2sd i think its called which let you transfer apps to sd card, correct me if i am wrong.
Code:
I already have it set up that way. I have the rom installed, I have the 2nd partition on my SD card, and have the apps linked to it with Link2SD. But, I last time I tried backing up roms that were installed on that partition, I have a bounty of issues. When I went to reinstall the apps, the files were still on that 2nd partition, there were dormant files left over everywhere, so when I'd try to restore the apps from backup, I got a plethora of errors and the rom began crashing. Just wondering if there's any way to backup and use roms that are installed on that 2nd partition using Link2SD?

I see, well since you have only 1 gb of internal storage for use i dont think i can help you with that.. because backup itself take a lot of space and not sure if you can make it to backup on your 2nd partition.
Or you can try transfer your backup files to your PC/laptop and delete everything then ty doing it and transfer back to phone after.
