[Q] Can't install themes through CWM (JVB) - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Recently I went back to a stock looking android ROM.
For now I've chosen Improvement v5 ultralite + Dark Core Kernel v 2.7.3.
Everything with the ROM works just fine, but the stock theme still bothers me.
I've downloaded 3 different themes for JVB. Everytime I try to install the .zip through CWM (v3.0.2.whatever) it tells me E:/*path* couldnt be opened (bad). installation aborted... (or something similar).
Tried to install some apps through CWM (>gtalk 1.3b) and it worked just like it should. Flashing other ROMs also worked out fine with that new version of CWM.
Does anyone know whats wrong?!
btw I used a MIUI ROM before...
Thank you in advance

Sounds like it could be a legacy left from miui, maybe try a clean instal?
Insanity cm 012/glitch

When you say android rom do you mean aosp, or sammy rom?
Insanity cm 012/glitch

Its based on a samsung rom.
I did a full wipe before. I've started from a froyo based Rom (darkys resurrection) with re-partion, then flashed a samsung jvb rom with bootloaders and finally the custom rom. Did I miss something?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

Btw I didnt format the internal sd card, so the content is still the same there.
Anyway I didnt have any problems since the new flash...its just that I cant install themes...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

I'm not familiar with miui, so might be worth having a check over there with regard to info on reverting back to samcrap rom
Insanity cm 012/glitch

Hey dont blame the samsung roms I swapped back because I needed full working 720p recording and better battery life...I hate the stock rom's ui but its the only way to go since I wanted a phone for everyday use with everything working...
Do you have an instruction for rolling back from cm/miui? I still didnt find anything...thanks for your attention mate
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

I agree with your sentiments, unfortunately no knowledge of reverting procedures but will keep my eyes peeled
Insanity cm 012/glitch

Its funny...just found out the files were corrupted (<10kb). So I downloaded once again and it works now...surprise

Suggest a ROM for GPS and music please.

Hi!
I've been using my Galaxy S (I9000 16gb) with Darky's 10.1 and Voodoo for a couple of months and now i have flashed latest Darky's 10.2. I understand that Darky is working hard on his releases, but for several reasons i don't like 10.2 version at all.
Can you please recommend me a good fast ROM with good modem part for a GPS and latest version voodoo kernel? I constantly use GPS and listen to the music so these are the crucial parts. Or maybe just separate modem and voodoo kernel that I can flash on a Cyanogenmod for example.
Thank you!
Try doctorz rom....click on my sig.

GPS depends on region, I'm from Europe.
Also u should try newest Darkys based on JVQ cuz they wont continue JVR development.
hmm , with all the music controls on the lockscreems aamd all the optional lockscreens you get with the nexus S gps fix , I wonder why nobody has suggested my rom .
Older ROM
I've upgraded to both JVR and JVS ROMs, but always found myself going back to the JVQ ROM instead, and just flashed updated system apps, etc.
Battery life is poor on the upgrades, and not as efficient...some are quite slow.
The best (fastest and most stable) ROM I've tested is F1 SGSII ROM Faryaab V6.
The developer released v7 of this ROM (JVR), but not as good, so again downgraded.
I've tried close to 10 ROMs (JVP, JVQ, JVR, JVS), including the stock ROMs for these upgrades, but none are better.
I suggest, if there is a ROM you like, use it, then just search/browse for apps you liked from other ROMs and create your custom feel.
market doesn't work
Thank you guys! I have flashed Darky's 10.3 and now I can't download any apps from the market, it just keeps saying something like "Starting download". I experienced same thing on 10.2. What is the problem? This is ROMs fault or something is wrong with settings? Everything was working back on the 10.1.

Which version of Android Market do you have?
Some of the newer custom ROMs clash with the older version of the market for no particular reason. Do a google search for version 3.0.27, which I think is the latest for Market. Install the apk and hopefully your problems are resolved.

I had old one. Installed 3.0.27 and the problem is still there.
Try the App "GPS AIDS" (I know its a goofy name) from the market.
For some SGS users, that's all they needed to get their GPS fixed...

Thanks, there are many positive reviews for this app, I will definitely try it after I fix my market.

Strange camera problem

Whenever I flash a custom ROM from stock eclair, the camera just doesn't work half the time. The camera app would open and it would just be a blank viewfinder. I found that closing and reopening the camera like 3 or 4 times fixes it temporarily. When I leave the phone sitting for a while and try to open the camera, it always opens with the blank viewfinder.
I tried searching about this but I guess it isn't a common issue at all, so if anyone can offer any advice I'd appreciate it

Well this really depends on the ROM you are flashing when coming from Eclair, which ROM did you try, and which kernel with that?
Well, I was on Team Hacksung's ICS build 17(icy glitch v14 b6), AOKP(same kernel), Doc's Master(the kernel that came with it), and Slim ICS 3.1(the kernel that came with it). I also tried a custom gingerbread ROM which I can't remember the name of atm.

OK, I think the problem is that all of the roms you've been flashing are ics builds and all of the ics builds for the galaxy s are ported at the moment, and because they are ported they don't always work. So my guess is that your camera doesn't work because of your ics builds, why don't you try a ROM built for captivate like fasty ROM or darky ROM or even cyanogenmod7?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA
I actually have tried cm7 but the camera would not open at all with that one.

None of the CM build are made for the captivate, try a rom built from stock and see if the issue happens on that. Maybe try legend rom from crt it is a very good rom based off of stock kk4.

I've tried flashing legend but that got me into a bootloop. I have successfully flashed Simply Stock, but I had the same camera issue.
This was a while ago, but I remember having camera problems as soon as I got the official gingerbread update from froyo. If I remember correctly the camera would always force close as soon as I opened it.
you must have a hardware problem.
camera works fine on ICS for the past 2 months at least. nothing but bad advice in this thread. i am running AOKP right now. used camera today.. used it now.. it works.
cm camera works fine, cm IS built for captivate, or in those thoughts... CM isnt built for any phone..??..
Well, I should also make it clear that the camera always seems to open with no problems on stock eclair or froyo, so yeah... it's a pretty strange case. I don't really want to trade everything else great about ICS and go back to froyo because of my ocd lol.

That's kind of what i meant lol its not a stock build.

Um, so is it unlikely I'll ever be able to fix this issue then?
Had same problem with every ICS rom I've tried. Seems camera only works with LCD density set to 220, at least on my phone. Check if it makes a difference on your phone. Under Settings > ROM Control> General UI> LCD Density

My gyrsocope gone crazy after flashing ROM

My note was just fine, i was using paranoid rom with nx kernel on it, then i just saw a new 4.1.2 rom (sweet ROM) i backed up my rom & then flashed the rom & speed mod kernel as well, i noticed when trying the camera something was wrong the icons were rotating like if i was moving the phone from vertical to horizontal constantly i decided to go back but was just crazy i got the same result.. googling i found some GS2's some gyroscopes were broken because a file some of'em because upgrading to ICS and others beacuse flasing just rom's i'd like to call for ur help guys thanks in advance cheers
Did you flash Sweet rom from nxkernel? If yes then that might have sonething to do with it not sure though.
Flash some TW based kernel (say Philz) and then do a full wipe and install Sweet Rom and see if it helps. Before that take backup of your apps.
Good luck

[Q] Stuck with Ginerbread 2.3.6, Slowdown. Need Help

Hi Guys,
I am a Galaxy S user. My Galaxy S was bought in Finland and still running (basically stuck with) Ginerbread 2.3.6 (I9000xxJVU). The phone's hardware is just fine (except slow GPS) but it has become paninfully slow and sometime shutting down/restarting on it's own.
Is it a good idea to reset the existing GingerBread 2.3.6 or get a different ROM?
I am a total novice and have not tried any other ROMs on it. I did some research about the alternative ROMs but there are so many options it made me really confused.
Could you guys suggest any stable and fast option for my Galaxy S i9000?
Also, if you could guide how I could migrate to that particular ROM from present Gingerbread, it would be really helpful.
Thanks in advance for your support and for this great forum.
Cheers

if you want to stay to 2.3.6 you can just factory reset your phone
Try this
Shut your Android Galaxy S down (Power off) or remove Battery.
Now press Volume up, Home and Power together.
If the Samsung Symbol is coming up leave the Home Button.
Then there is a boot Menu
Volume Up and Down to Navigate , Home to select the chosen option. ( factory reset )
---------------
if you want to upgrade to ICS or JB rom
root your firmware , choose the right cf-root from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
download ICS rom ( i suggest this one )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1687727
install it via recovery
if you want to upgrade to JB
go to development section , chose any custom rom you want
and install via recovery

Thank you mistrp74 and The Tox for the help.
I am still a bit confused, I cant seem to locate the right cf-root [Ginerbread 2.3.6 (I9000xxJVU)] from the thread you mentioned.
One more thing, how is your experience of running the Custom Roms, is it much better than the Samsung Firmware? Does all the function work fine?
I will need a bit of spoon feeding in the beginning for the update... as I have never tried it before and I am scared of bricking my phone.
So, please don't give up on me

The right CF-Root is in the seond to last post on the first page I believe- if you can fnd the one for XXJW4, the one you need is right above it
Custom ICS/JB roms are definitely smoother in many ways, although bear in mind because stock Jelly Bean don't include them, both FM Radio and 3G video calling won't work by default (two features of stock roms, I guess AllShare is another if you use it like me). Otherwise every other function is stable and rock solid. Except for the CM10.2 builds, which are still in an initial stage, the JB roms here should have everything working fine.

Thanks a lot guys!
I finally managed to do it.
I installed the CF-Root without any problem but RemICS-UX v1.3.1 (Team Remics) didn't load. It was stuck at the boot screen.
I thought I bricked my phone... but then I installed Ginerbread 2.3.6 (I9000xxJVU) using Odin and then installed plain vanilla ICS 4.0.3
Coming from Ginerbread 2.3.6 I find a lot of new things and the phone is also snappy and responsive... my old Galaxy S is acting almost like a new phone! So I am really happy.
Now that I am familiar with the process I am confident to tryout other ROMs...
I would like something simple, lightweight and fully-functional/bug-free.
So please let me know if there is any other better ROM I should try.
Thanks again guys!

Or else it a lot of work to update each and every app... one by one... also what about the SMS, call log etc?

Because I'm a person who 1.) doesn't use too many apps and 2.) tries to be as economical as possible, I don't have a large amount to backup. My contacts and calendar are always through Google, and for SMS I use SMS Backup and Restore on Play Store. Call log I don't keep, because I'm not a person who really cares for call logs. I only have one other app, Colornote, and that's cloud-synced as well.
Everything else I need is in internal storage :3

More or less similar situation as TS
Hey guys,
Im in a more or less similar situation as the topic starter. My Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 has gotten slow and unresponsive with time.
I would like to update to a custom ROM, and got a little curious about the Slim Bean. But I feel a little unsure about how to proceed.
I'm currently running a custom Gingerbread 2.3.3 ROM, my device is rooted. I flashed this ROM from the Froyo that came with the phone about 2 years ago. It's been so long since I flashed this, I need some directions, as Im afraid I will brick my device.
When I go to recovery mode I see it runs ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.3 - Voodoo lagfix.
Can I just put a Slim Bean 4.2 android version on my internal sd card and run "install zip from sdcard" in ClockwordMod? I would prefer to flash the latest stable version of Slim Bean, which would that be 4.2.2.build7-OFFICIAL?'
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Bootism
Best way to update from gb or even older to jb is imo the way over cyanogenmod.
Follow this tutorial for 10.1: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_galaxysmtd
And then you can upgrade via cwm to the very good slim bean.

Thanks for the answer!
I recall reading about lots of issues with the lagfix and flashing ROMs. My file storage system is in ext4 instead of standard rfs, I think I should somehow undo this if I recall correct. Is this true?
Do you have an option to unlagfix in recovery?
Sent from my GT-P3110 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, I can choose "voodoo lagfix" in recovery.
It has the following options:
- disable lagfix
- enable lagfix (default)
- /system lagfix on (default)
- /system lagfix off
- debug off (default)
- debug on
Enter disable lagfix and reboot

Yeah, it's a whole new world opening up. Old phone runs relatively smooth, at least way better than before thanks for helping. I will stay on this Cyanogenmod for a bit and explore. Can I just flash in any of the ROMs as .zip in CWM later? I will look for a lightweight ROM for my old phone, any suggestions?

If you have problems with CWM you should check here the points 8 and 26 to 30. I have the some problem but unfortunately I have no clue how to fix it, even with those tips, but maybe it'll work for you. And if you'll find any easy way to install CWM for stock recovery <3e> please let me know, I've been struggling with it for quite some time now.
Also remember to choose right CSC when installing stock rom - you can check what your code is here.
