Trying to root a Sprint Hero, build 2.32.651.2. In order to root it, I need to downgrade it to the older software version. The catch is that it appears that USB on the phone does not work, please read on.
When plugged in, computer does not detect it at all, but phone does charge.
Tried on two different PCs, one XP one 7 and nothing happens when phone is plugged in, no mass storage or anything else detected on both computers.
I have another Sprint Hero, that one is detected just fine. Its been rooted for over a year and never had any issues doing anything over USB.
Tried even in fastboot, phone is still not detected. “adb devices” finds nothing ….
The question is, is there are way to downgrade to an older ROM without USB?
I tried extracting ROM.zip from RUU 2.27.651.5, renaming it HEROIMG.zip placing it on a gold card and then using fastboot to install it, but is just gets skipped over, like its not even there.
Any thoughts or ideas?
I'm mobile at the moment and can't verify this, but I believe Z4 root should work for you without downgrading. You should only have to downgrade to get the bootloader S-off.

Indeed it did.... clockwork mod recovery installed, CM7.0.3 flashing....
Thanks!
No problem...Glad it worked. Been a while since I last used it.

hey did you ever install the htc and adb drivers thats probably why your computer isnt recognizing it.

Is it possible to unroot your phone without your usb connection working anymore? I plug my phone into my computer which is running Windows XP Media Center edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 and it says USB Device not recognized. I tried to manually update the driver in the device manager but it tells me that the specified location does not contain information about your hardware and I verified that they are the drivers for my hero. I even tried a new cable to eliminate that as a problem but I still have the same issues. To give it one last try I plugged it into my laptop Running Windows Vista and also came up with usb device not recognized. I would like to return my phone to Sprint so I can get the usb connection problem fixed but I need to unroot the phone first. PLEASE HELP! - Josh

you can "re-flash" the stock .img files from Better Terminal. I lucked out on my last phone that went completely dead for no reason I knew of. The techs couldn't revive my rooted phone, so I got a replacement.
Since then, I do a "watered down" root - @forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
Without having to wipe everything clean and start from scratch- Flashing the stock and removing root works for me through this:
I copied unrevoked and RA1.6.2 to my sdcard. Use step 7 & 8 (sh /sdcard/unrevoked and flash the RA recovery img). After reboot, I make a nand backup.
For me anyway- by doing none of the rest, it allows me to remove the apps I want to remove and allows me to reflash the stock 2.1 recovery image. I can then update to .6 if necessary to seal it up...flashing the recovery image can be done from the phone using Better Terminal as well.
The only reason I prefer it this way is, I don't want to use a custom ROM and I only want to pull some of the unecessary (for me) apps out. I'll back it up and if need be, I am 1 step closer to "unrooting" it.
I know, I know...but to each his own...I've taken a rooted phone in (no custom ROM) with a speaker issue- no hassles. I've taken a rooted phone in for dust under the screen, way back when- and had to argue the point that ROMS and rooting had nothing to do with a defect in manufacturing that caused the dust under the screen (was able to get a replacement just slightly after my 30 days was up).... So when this last one was completely dead - I thought for sure it was going to cost me.
Long Lost Thank You!
I tried that and it totally worked. I appreciate the detailed feedback. I just realized I never commented back! Now I have an EVO and I just put MIUI on it, can't wait to try it out. Thanks again!
When I connected my phone to the computer this morning it did nothing..No device unknown, nothing on computer, zilch!!! I was like let me do a master reset and format the memory card. That did nothing too. I tried switiching out cables, switched out computers, but same thing, the phone is charging but does not show up on my computer. I have another SGS that is detected on both the computers with both cables so I ruled out the driver/cable issue. Kies does not recognize the phone either. I have not done anything to it. It has the factory Bell ROM with 2.3.3 with UGKG3 firmware. The phone makes calls but just cannot be detected by the computer making it completely useless as I cannot load anything on it (Music/pictures). I am out of warranty so sending it to Samsung is not possible. Do I have a fried board? What are my options. The phone is not rooted and has never seen any custom firmware. Any help is appreciated.
I had that problem after I rooted the Bell UGKG3 rom, but you're not rooted, so not really sure.
I just rebooted my computer and it was recognized again.
You've eliminated all the obvious issues with the other cables and phones.
As for loading music and pictures, if you have an external microSD card in the phone, you could take it out and load it with a USB reader for microSD cards.
If you can load and run Apps then likely the board is fine. Try cleaning the port with rubbing alcohol and a bit of q-tip on a pin. They can be very sensitive to dirt. Like in that you'll see nothing in the qtip but it works again...
Also check if it is recognized in odin separately as if it is OK there it may be a rom issue.

I'm sure you just haven't installed the proper drivers.
I have a bell phone too, but just made sure I installed them manually.

I know this is an old thread but is there any news on this particular problem. My SGS have the same problem (not recognized as a phone in xp) phone does boot up an can load apps etc. fine. I can go into download mode and recovery and phone does charge via the cable. I tried a different cable without luck. Even tried to reinstall drivers and ended up reinstalling my whole OS on my laptop. First win7 without luck and now I´m back on xp. Also tried a friends desktop computer but same problem....

try and identify the problem by using procedure in MY Android solutions link below
OK folks, I know some of you are going to jump straight down my throat, but please, back off and stick to the friendly forums that this used to be where anyone would help anyone.
the story so far is that I once loved my Nexus One, I've had it since launch, I have ran Cynogen Mod 7 for a couple of years, I have had MUI roms running, I have played with various kernels, updated radio, upgraded hardware, all was going wonderfully.
the one thing I could never get was full SU!! Heck knows why!!
I then started getting random problems and downloaded the original google frf83 software and flashed the phone via update.zip using amon-ra recovery.
I thought all was well after this, as my phone received 3 OTA updates and now my phone is on...
Android 2.3.6
Baseband 32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04
Kernel 2.6.35.7-59465-g42bad32 ([email protected] #1)
Build GRK394
I noticed that in the Status (settings) it was displaying my old sim card number, which is not the number for the sim in the phone now. his I thought was odd and that something had gone wrong.
So as most of us would do, I went to boot AmonRa recovery and it wasnt available, it had been overwritten with the default recovery; ok lets just ADB and reflash it, I hadnt used ADB for a couple of years because I did everything through AmonRa's awesome recovery!!
So off I go, install the SDK, all the appropriate packs including the USB driver, just like I did when I originally flashed the phone with the recovery image!
But an old problem came back that I hadnt even been bothered about because I always put stuff on SDcard via a card reader!!
I have had consistent problems with my nexus one for some time now in regards to the USB drivers, no matter what I do the phone will not install and I believe it could be some conflict in the device.
I am running Vista Ultimate (fully registered) and no matter what I do I cannot get the Nexus One to install. It will only display as unknown device, which is absolutely useless.
I have browsed every post and tried everything I have found, and yet nothing is working. I have used devmgmt, I have tried the roll backs, I have tried to install every driver available to get it working. I have uninstalled the device, updated drivers after fresh install attempts, I have even formatted my laptop thinking it may have had a corrupt OS and bought Vista Ultimate.
I am not a complete noob and I have been around these forums for some years, but I never thought I would have to cry out like a 4ucking Noob with such a seemingly simple problem, but it is not simple, I have done everything I can possibly find!!
I must get the USB working in order to get the recovery back, I can access my phones default recovery but it will not work when trying various roms as update.zip!!
I have tried the terminal commands on the phone to install the recovery.img but I do not have SU access and the phone point blank refuses.
I have attempted to change and remove the recovery files reffered that are causing the revert to default recovery, but shock.. I cannot delete because of insufficient permissions. I cannot ADB because the USB driver refuses to install.
So if I cannot change the files due to permissions, I cannot ADB because of USB, I cannot get to Ra's recovery because of bootfiles, I cannot use default recovery to update.zip... I am absolutely losing my mind and I'm going nuts browsing the forums for the second week running, yes I am now on day 12 of trying to fix this problem and at a complete loss...
Can someone please help??
I will even allow remote access to pc because I am that desperate to resurrect my beloved Nexus One.
I also have a Galaxy I9000 without 3 button download mode but that is an entirely different story!!
Please just someone, come to an oldskoolers rescue, and yes PAYMENT will be given to the knight in shiny armour!!

Or just use fastboot instead of adb...
His Nexus One isn't recognized by the computer, so that won't help unfortunately. Also, I've never heard of build GRK394..

Install the drivers for fastboot already Jeez and then read How to use android for dummies.
The Whole Story:
So yesterday I successfully upgraded my HTC One M7 to Lollipop for the first time. I was very excited because the UI is awesome. However, my cellular service didn't work. I read that this is because the firmware was out of date.
In trying to update said firmware, somehow I wiped the internal storage of my device (I know...) including my backup. But that doesn't really matter that much... because while using the HTC One Toolkit I also managed to idiotically turn S-ON! So I can't get into recovery anyway...
So I've been trying to get S-Off with firewater because if I can just get into recovery I can install an older backup I have from last year and then get a new ROM and try this circus all over again in a few weeks when my brain is hopefully not dumb. And that is where I've run into trouble with adb.
In the adb console I can see my phone's serial but it always is listed as offline. In fastboot, however, it is listed fine. I have tried so so many things, but at this point I'll try and re-try anything all over again just to get this to work.
Honestly, I'm surprised this thing isn't brIcked by now with all the f--k ups I've had in the past two days.
TL; DR: I royally messed up and accidentally turned S-On. Not sure if it is related, but now adb lists my HTC as offline while fastboot seems to recognize it fine. I can also access all my files on the phone from Windows.
One thing that (I think) is an important detail is that I cannot seem to get the RSA prompt to appear when I plug my phone into Windows with debugging mode on. I have never used this computer with this phone before, so I know it isn't saved or anything (maybe it's worth clearing the RSA keys anyway?).
What I've tried so far:
-Downloaded latest drivers from HTC (2.0.7.29 from 3/3/15)
-Installed Android Studio and updated Google USB Drivers and Platform Tools
-Rebooted Computer and Phone Multiple times
-Unplugged and re plugged USB cord
-Unchecked and rechecked USB debugging
Please...Please, I desperately need people who are better at this than I am.

Thanks for the tip. Does flashing a boot.img and stock recovery require adb? Currently, that is where my main setback is.
If it doesn't require adb, can you point me into the direction of the right keywords to Google to find out how to do that?
Ok ladies and gents,
I've been on a mission to root my Note 5 N920I for months now.
My problem is no computer will read/recognise the device. The Mac's seem to not even recognise it's plugged in, with Windows, no matter which driver I install it keeps telling me the "device descriptor failed blah blah blah". I managed to root my S4 very easily on Mac with Jodin3 so I know that it ain't no user error.
I've Googled and Googled ways to root without a computer or installing a custom recovery without root, but from what I understand I can't flash TWRP as recovery without a computer and therefore cannot root without a custom recovery.
I've Googled ways to fix the USB issue by making the xml file and putting it into the correct folder, but for that I need to be rooted. Right?
When she's plugged into a computer with USB debugging on or off nothing comes up in my notifications except for charging. I tried using the toolbox which I found on here (sorry can't remember the name) though it seemed like I was getting close, I couldn't get close enough before my temper got the better off me.
If my memory serves me correctly the OTG function worked when i first got the phone but didn't after the first update. My mate's Note 5 also has the same issue. I Googled it and seemed it was common issue on these phones.
I've tried to learn some Terminal/Command Prompt to see if I can fix it that way through Debian or whatever, only got as far as understanding it, kind of. Big ups to all you coders/programmers out there it really is an artform.
So PLZ PLZ can y'all help me, there has to be a way aside from setting this thing alight and getting a new phone.
My next mission, which I only embarked on a couple nights ago is unbricking my dad's Note 4 (N910G) that just hit the **** one day after spazzing out for a few days then would not turn on. I'm getting close though I haven't put much effort into that yet.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance. ?

1)First of all have you enabled usb debugging and oem unlocking options enabled from developers options?
2)Install latest usb drivers for your model no on pc, use original usb cable to connect your phone
3) Try different usb hub-ports on your pc, it is recommended to use main-usb port to connect device properly which is mostly located backside of cpu cabinet
4)Does odin recognises ur device? If yes then you can flash twrp and cf autoroot both ( Sometimes Kies or smartswtich like programmes enforces device not be reognised, so uninstall them before trying to connect and flashing thorugh odin)
5)Try to update device drivers manually from Pc's administration
6) Try to connect your phone on another pc running windows and see if it recognises your device or not
I've tried all of that, i have a 09 Macbook Pro hand me down running Yosemite with Windows 8.1 Pro n just put Ubuntu on her today through Parallels. None of which recognise the phone being there.
I've plugged it into 2 HP PC's and both just keep telling "device descriptor failed". They're both kinda old too.
Unless someone has a specific driver they've made or found or could make me?? Clearly I'm a noob.
Closest I've found is https://github.com/452/USBHIDTerminal/wiki/How-to-enable-USB-host-API-support but still need root or system mounted as rw.
Any other ideas? Any ADB codes anyone could help me with ?
