Since I was looking to be able to update my phone, I had to remove the WebtopMod. Since the previous instructions required me to root my phone to remove it, which was counterproductive because it would mean loosing the ability to update anyway. I looked through the WebtopMod installation scripts and came up with this guide to remove it:
View attachment WebtopModRemoveGuideNoRoot.txt
Note: I've attached the guide in a separate file, because the forum is stupid and thinks that exe, bak, odex, apk, and dex are valid TLD's and says I can't post external links. If I ever get "approximately eight" posts I'll put it in this post.
If you don't have the original backup files, look in page 3 of the howto post for removing it with root. (Thanks, MotoAtrixFan for posting it and twoeleven99 for alerting me to this)

you can update even if you are rooted you cant update only when you modify the /system or some apps
went step by step through your guide and I still cannot update - the apply_patch_check still fails at DockProvider.apk - aside from reflashing the stock SBF, what do you recommend?
Try this
Try setting the phone to usb mass storage mode and replacing the files in the WebtopModBackup folder on the sd/media area with these: View attachment WebtopModBackup.zip
The files in the archive worked for me, not sure why it wouldn't work. If those don't work for you, please post the console log.

Thanks, but something appears to be totally screwed up on my DockProvider and DockService applications on Titanium Backup - they are listed at the bottom with grey slashes through them. The crazy part is.... it works with the webtop hack, but the update doesn't see the correct files, so something is obviously messed up.
Now, by putting the files from the WebtopModBackup on the phone, shouldn't that fix the issue? Then perform the steps in your text doc? I can't believe I'll have to SBF stock in order to fix the stupid DockProvider and DockService!!
What I meant was, replace the files in the WebtopModBackup folder with the stuff in the archive, then re-do the instruction in the text file.
I'm sorry but your instructions aren't working for me. I've followed your instructions very carefully but when I get to the command
cd /mnt/sdcard/WebtopModBackup
I get a directory not found error.
I can change to /mnt/sdcard but when I type 'ls' nothing appears. The directory is empty.
What am I doing wrong?
One thing I've noticed is that when I enter the 'adb.exe shell ./data/local/tmp/psneuter' command, the phone appears to dismount and remount and then when I go into the shell the '/mnt/sdcard' directory is empty.
Yeah I'm also having that problem....I'm trying to push the backup files into the correct folder. However, when I get a read-only error, so from what I read I'm supposed to reboot into recovery mode. When I try to do this the recovery console says e: can't open/cache/recovery/command and I can't connect to my phone. Any help?
To start I want to say Thank you to the OP for posting this. But there are a few errors, so I hope I can help.
To anyone having issues with this, there are a few things that you must have to make this work.
Note this only works for AT&T Atrix as I do not have a Bell Atrix
#1; THE 1st PART DOES NOT WORK if you performed the update. You should be rooted. You can check to see if you updated by pressing menu --> settings --> about phone and your Build version says something like OLYFR_U4_1.5.7 it will not work, you need to skip down to my next post of my coding since you should already be rooted. The 1st part of this uses the method that made rooting possible, since that was removed with the update, it no longer applies. So if you are updated, you should already be rooted and can skip a few steps
#2; You must have a folder called WebTopModBackup with the .bak files in it on the internal memory (not your memory card but the fake internal one). Open the app called Files, select Internal phone storage, select the WebTopModBackup folder and make sure you see the following files, if not you need to get them
Code:
DockProvider.apk.bak
DockProvider.odex.bak
DockService.apk.bak
DockService.odex.bak
PortalApp.apk.bak
PortalApp.odex.bak
#3; Do not mount your sdcard. When you plug in your USB cable to the compter, pull down the drop menu, select the USB connection and make sure None is selected; then press ok. If one of the other options are selected, select None press ok and wait for 30 seconds for the internal and external cards to mount. @Phazoni more than likely this is your issue
#4; USB debugging must be turned on. Press menu --> settings --> applications --> development --> and check USB debugging if not checked
#5; Make sure you have at least 50% battery, just in case
#6; During the steps you mount (make it editable) the /system folder where the files are, if you get a read-only error you did not do step
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /system
correctly or your phone is somehow not rooted.

Ok now let's look at the code in the OP
Code:
adb.exe push psneuter /data/local/tmp
adb.exe shell chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/psneuter
adb.exe shell ./data/local/tmp/psneuter
adb.exe shell
adb.exe push is the command to copy a file to your phone; so we are making a copy of psneuter and putting it on the phone.
adb.exe shell chmod 755 this gives premission to the phone to use the psneuter file
adb.exe shell ./ this makes the psneuter file run and creates a fake root
adb.exe shell this should really be typed as adb shell but whatever. This takes you into the phone's system to edit the files. While in adb, the line should start with a # if it is a $ then psneuter did not work. Just to try, type su and see if the $ changes to a # if it does continue
Code:
cd /mnt/sdcard/WebtopModBackup
This command takes you to the location of your backup, remeber step 2 & 3, if this folder is empty and you cannot get to it, you have an issue there
Code:
mv DockProvider.apk.bak DockProvider.apk
mv DockProvider.odex.bak DockProvider.odex
mv DockService.apk.bak DockService.apk
mv DockService.odex.bak DockService.odex
mv PortalApp.apk.bak PortalApp.apk
mv PortalApp.odex.bak PortalApp.odex
Personally this is not the best way to do this (rename the files by making copies and then making more copies), but not my code. The mv command moves a file. In this case you are only using it to rename the files removing the .bak from the end. See my code at the bottom
Code:
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /system
This mounts the /system folder so you can edit the system files
Code:
cp DockProvider.apk /system/app/
cp DockProvider.odex /system/app/
cp DockService.apk /system/app/
cp DockService.odex /system/app/
cp PortalApp.apk /system/app/
cp PortalApp.odex /system/app/
This code copies the files into the original locations as the correct name. This assumes you are still in the folder where the backups are. If this fails, the /system folder is not mounted, the files are missing or you are in a different folder. This is also missing the chmod /system/app/* coding. I will cover that below
Code:
rm /data/dalvik-cache/[email protected]*.dex
rm /data/dalvik-cache/[email protected]*.dex
rm /data/dalvik-cache/[email protected]*.odex
rm /data/dalvik-cache/[email protected]*.odex
rm is the command to remove/delete a file, running these 4 commands will remove the system cache and will most likely cause your phone to reboot before the next step; that is ok.
Code:
reboot now
This reboots the phone and removes the temp root.

NOW for my recommended coding
After you follow my 6 steps above do the following
#1. on your compter press start --> run --> Type cmd this will open the command prompt for windows. Then navigate to the folder where the original WebTopMod files are located.
#2a. If are rooted jump down to step 4
#2. If you are not rooted and have not updated your phone type the following letter for letter
Code:
adb push psneuter /data/local/tmp
adb shell
You will now be in the ADB shell.
#3. You should see a $ so type the following
Code:
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/psneuter
./data/local/tmp/psneuter
#4 This will kick you out of ADB, wait for it and when it does count to 30 for adb to reset. Now type the following:
Code:
adb shell
#5. You should see the # sign, if you see $ type su to change it since you should be rooted either by rooting the phone or using steps 1-3 above for pre-update.
Code:
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /system
cp /mnt/sdcard/WebtopModBackupDockProvider.apk.bak /system/app/DockProvider.apk
cp /mnt/sdcard/WebtopModBackupDockProvider.odex.bak /system/app/DockProvider.odex
cp /mnt/sdcard/WebtopModBackupDockService.apk.bak /system/app/DockService.apk
cp /mnt/sdcard/WebtopModBackupDockService.odex.bak /system/app/DockService.odex
cp /mnt/sdcard/WebtopModBackupPortalApp.apk.bak /system/app/PortalApp.apk
cp /mnt/sdcard/WebtopModBackupPortalApp.odex.bak /system/app/PortalApp.odex
chmod 644 /system/app/*
rm /data/dalvik-cache/[email protected]*.dex
rm /data/dalvik-cache/[email protected]*.dex
rm /data/dalvik-cache/[email protected]*.odex
rm /data/dalvik-cache/[email protected]*.odex
reboot now
This
1. mounts the /system folder so you can replace the files then
2. renames nd copies the back-up files to the original locations in one step
3. Then the chmod 644 command sets the correct premissions for the files so they work,
4. clears the cache and
5. reboots the phone.

In the latest cm9 nightly build - update-cm-9-20120419-NIGHTLY, my wifi is not work with my own kernel.
So, I checked the catalog, and found this: wifi modules was changed.
http://review.cyanogenmod.com/#/c/14910/1/BoardConfigCommon.mk
old path: /system/modules/bcm4329.ko
new path: /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko
It will cause your wifi not work with custom kernel.
If your wifi is not work, just make a symbol link, type these command in the terminal:
su
mount -o remount,rw /system
ln -s /system/modules/bcm4329.ko /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko
#Thanks Paragon_X, I forgot to tell you to remount /.
mount -o remount,ro /system
Or, you are the kernel developer, your should put your kernel modules in both path, or link them.
Thanks
I confirm this change as well and the fix worked.
I have the wifi authentication problem. Do I flash the download link from the link you posted?

Okay thanks so regarding the command written... is there spaces in there or am I seeing things?
ln -s /system/modules/bcm4329.ko /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko
I'm not familiar with typing in superuser so I have to ask
There are spaces.
If you are unfamiliar with the spaces, then you will be unfamiliar with the before and after commands around that command too:
mount -o remount,rw /system
and
mount -o remount,ro /system
Thanks for the fix!

Thanks that will be handy for surprised users, if CM actually thought things through, they would link the dirs to allow a transition time where kernels work with modules in old location and new location.

Hi,im kinda really noob at this stuff atm but do we type this in command prompt or terminal emulator (or any other program like that). And can someone confirm the code is:
su
mount -o remount,rw /system
ln -s /system/modules/bcm4329.ko /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko
#Thanks Paragon_X, I forgot to tell you to remount /.
mount -o remount,ro /system
the "fix" is included in the latest trinity kernels. wifi works with the newest cm9(nightlies and kangs), older cm9, and every other rom.

Im using matrix kernel v19 cfs and the latest CM9 v7. Trying to get the wifi working now and its hard.
Heres what i have done using terminal emulator
Typed in "su". Pressed enter. I granted super user permissions.
Typed in "mount -o remount,rw /system" . Pressed enter. Didnt say anything
Typed in "ln -s /system/modules/bcm4329.ko /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko". Pressed Enter
It showed up "link failed File exists"
now its changed to "255|[email protected]:/". Before it was "[email protected]:/"
I than typed in "mount -o remount,ro /system"
My wifi still doesnt work
I'll reply here to. The reason you can not link (ln) is that there is a file where you are trying to add a "shortcut" just remove the bcm*.ko file in /system/lib/modules and copy the module from /system/modules there. I used root explorer then it's just cut and paste

I still have no luck. Is the error everyone getting the authentication problem? and simply wifi indicator wont popup?
For all the people who dont get this too well, especielly me. Could an experienced, someone who knows this, write out the complete instructions and codes to do it. Preferably in detail because some of us have no idea what we are suppose to do. And suggest what type of programs we should be using. thanks in advance.
Ok. Let's take it from the start. When android boots it loads the kernel to handle all the drivers and inner workings of the OS. It also loads modules, that's optional drivers loaded on demand. Now CM9, used to load it's modules from /system/modules but has changed it's location to /system/lib/modules. This is new to the people making custom kernels which kernel installs it's modules in the wrong place. This makes the new kernel try to load the old module but fails because of different kernel source versions. Now, our task is to move the new module in /system/modules to /system/lib/modules overwriting the old one.
Start a terminal.
Type su and enter to become superuser which is the only user with rights to change system files.
Now if there is a box asking you to allow this, press allow.
Now type:
mount -o remount, rw /system
This will make the system folder and child folders writable.
type:
rm /system/lib/modules/bcm*
That will remove the old module.
Type:
cp /system/modules/bcm* /system/lib/modules
Reboot and it should work.

If your drivers are installed correctly now, use the root tool in development section. Then there are no mistakes. If you insist on the manual method though, you need to put the su file and superuser.apk in your folder titled carol and Start over completely

still no luck
I've copied both files to 'carol' as well as platform-tools, what have I done wrong?

Think I'll leave it a while before I attempt custom roms lol

From my personal experience is best way how to root kindle fire by qemu (development part of forum) its quite easy... to solve problem if your device isn't found I had to create folder .android in my “documents“ like it is when you will instantly sdk
You have to create it via command line... mkdir .android
Create there required file how it is described in qemu thread. Reinstal kindle adb drivers and try qemu once more.. that worked for me like a charm.
Tomorrow when I will be on PC I will post step by step guide

I WROTE THE FOLLOWING WHILE TRYING TO TROUBLESHOOT/DOCUMENT MY OWN STEPS BUT I HAVE FOUND A SOLUTION. I HAVE POSTED THIS IN CASE SOMEONE ELSE MAY FIND THE INFORMATION USEFUL.
Is that appropriate? Move/delete this if you see fit.
I have an AT&T Moto X running 4.2.2 rooted with PwnMyMoto. Since it is with ATT, it has a locked bootloader.
[PROBLEM]
After putting a custom bootanimation.zip in the /system/media directory, device boots/"works" but display is black.
[HOW IT HAPPENED]
Using ES File Explorer, I turned on the /system r/w, copied the bootanimation.zip from the (internal) sdcard, and then overwrote the original boot animation (I do have a backup).
However, after booting the phone now, there is only a black screen. It seems to be working, there's just nothing displayed.
[WHAT I CAN DO/HAVE DONE]
ADB debugging has already been enabled
ADB shell has already been granted superuser permissions (Using SuperSU, unsure if solution works if this hasn't been done?)
It vibrates sometimes as though I have an email, notification, or whatever
I can access storage with usb cable,
adb get-state returns device,
I CAN get into fastboot (screen displays normally here), however PwnMyMoto overwrites recovery,
when rebooting the phone, the motorola power down animation is displayed
I tried to put back the original with
adb push bootanimation.zip /system/media
but get 'permission denied' (you may be able to use method this on a different device/carrier/ROM)
adb shell getprop ro.boot.write_protect returns 0
in adb shell
mv /sdcard/download/bootanimation.zip /system/media/ returns failed - cross-device link (googled this, seems normal, but I'm unsure how else to copy it back)
su
mount -o remount,rw /system
doesn't return anything but I am unsure where to go from there.
cannot run adb as root, as the phone is not a dev model
[RELATED POSTS]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2249659
[HOW I FIXED IT]
start adb
ensure that 'adb shell getprop ro.boot.write_protect' returns 0 (if not, reboot into recovery)
start phone in recovery mode with
adb reboot recovery
then
adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
mount -o remount,rw /system (not sure which one of these ended up being 'correct' but it didn't hurt to do both)
cp /sdcard/download/bootanimation.zip /system/media/ (copy <src> <dest>, src is wherever the backup zip is located, if you are unsure of where the files are, use the 'ls' command to navigate the directories)
adb reboot
After doing this, the screen started displaying as normal.
Apologies for the lack of technicality, not much a dev myself. Just glad to have it working again.

I wrote down the steps I took to fix it at the end of the post. You'll have to restore the old boot animation file with ADB. Hopefully, ADB shell was already given root permissions on your phone, otherwise I'd be unsure of how to fix it.

If you're unsure how to start ADB, I'd think that you've never used it before, and in that case I'd be entirely unsure if that method would work.
That said, you should find adb.exe in the sdk/platform-tools folder. If you shift+right-click this folder you can quickly open a command prompt there to start using the commands (each line in the instructions is a separate command). If you're unsure how exactly to use adb, I'm sure there are youtube videos or other forum posts documenting the basics (try searching for beginner's guide to adb on xda).
YES!!!

It worked the first time then next reboot it shows black screen but i know it hasnt booted cause no sounds. and when i turn tablet sideways it doesnt show half of a screen. (it did that last time the screen was black).
So I picked up a ADT-1 due to having Ethernet and more HD space on it. FOund out only certain apps can "cast" to it due to it being a dev device has there been anyone that figured out what needs to get it to have full casting features?

Try changing ro.build.type to eng in build.prop, that should open up all apps.
/sub
let us know if this works
Confirmed this works!

Sorry to sound like a newbie, however can someone teach me how to do this? I was trying to look it up on xda but had no luck finding anything. If anyone point me in the right direction, I would be very happy. Thank you again

1. Root
2. Open /system/build.prop
3. Change the line
4. Reboot
5. Enjoy.
I'm trying to do this but I'm being very unlucky. Not sure what's going wrong and any light on the matter will be greatly appreciated.
I changed the ro.build.type from `user` to `eng` and my device (on LPX13D) stops booting completely. All I see is the android logo and then blank screen. I already tried two times. The process I did is (from sudo on my Ubuntu 14 machine)
- adb pull /system/build.prop
- edit build.prop on `nano` on Ubuntu (change only that line)
- adb push build.prop /sdcard/
- adb shell
- su
- mount -o remount,rw /system
- mv /sdcard/build.prop /system/
the second time I adb pull /system/build.prop again just to check that the only thing changed was that, and it was fine.
The only thing I've been able to do to recover the system is to:
- install CWM from here https://forum.gtvhacker.com/adt-f52/topic1629.html (fastboot flash recovery <filename>)
- flash the image from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/har...t/adt1-stock-molly-images-unbricking-t2927888
- and then using the root from this post: https://plus.google.com/+Chainfire/posts/a5YshULM8hf to be able to "adb shell su"
any help? Maybe some bizarre permission on my ubuntu machine because I'm on "sudo shell" ?

build.prop has to be chmodded to 0644, or the device will not boot.
HomeSp I can't thank you enough!
That was exactly the issue. Third time is a charm.
So at the end of the procedure I:
- cd /system/
- mv build.prop build.prop.bak (just for the the sake of it)
- mv /sdcard/build.prop /system/
- chmod 0644 build.prop
- chown :root build.prop (prolly not needed but what-a-heck, why not)
- ls -l (and checked that both build.prop and build.prop.bak are exactly the same permission, owner and group)
- exit, exit adb reboot and all works great"
Thanks again!!!

For the purposes of modifying build.prop using "adb shell su", do you only have to flash the bootloader image from the linked post? I'd like to make the bare minimum changes so that future OTA's will install after restoring the original build.prop and flashing the stock bootloader.

my idea was a bare-minimum changes too. I just ended up ****ing up stuff and had to re-built a couple of times until I made it right.
but yeah, if you're comfortable with terminal commands and do the proper `chmod` (which I originally didn't), you can get everything done with "adb shell su" following like this:
- from PC: adb shell pull file to your PC
- from PC: edit file
- from PC: adb shell push file to /sdcard/
- from PC: adb shell
- from device shell: su
- from device shell/su: make /system/ writable, chmod file, rename "old" build.prop, copy new one over, double check chmod before rebooting.
ps.: the root from that post does install SuperUser.apk on the device, it's there on the UI, but after you do those changes there's some options in the .apk to remove root and uninstall it (if you want to)
I just thought that I'd directly use some build prop editor apk and do it easily but now my device is bricked :v
Stock ROM on download.
I'm just getting a black screen and bootloader.
So, the build.prop edit detailed in this thread works fine to make the ADT-1 a cast target for all Google Cast enabled apps. The problem is that it's hardly worth doing right now since Google Cast support on Android TV seems to be a work in progress. There's a support article that details third-party apps that are not supported - https://support.google.com/androidtv/answer/6123347
In addition to the apps listed there, I found that Watch ESPN isn't working on ADT-1 either. It's selectable in the app, but the video playback will not start. Here's to hoping that Google brings the Google Cast Receiver app for Android TV up to snuff soon - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.mediashell

Have any of you tried Slingplayer casting after changing build.prop?
Apple TV just died recently, it was the most reliable thing for Airplaying Slingplayer. Chromecast slingplayer kind of is ****ty at times.
Followed Budius' instructions and it worked perfectly.
adb pull /system/build.prop
----(edit build.prop on Notepad++ and changed ro.build.type=user to ro.build.type=eng)
adb push build.prop /sdcard/
adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw /system
cd /system/
mv build.prop build.prop.bak
mv /sdcard/build.prop /system/
chmod 0644 build.prop
chown :root build.prop
ls -l
---(checked that both build.prop and build.prop.bak are exactly the same permission, owner, and group)
mount -o remount,ro /system
exit
exit
adb reboot
during the update from 5.0 -> 5.0.2 my ADT-1 stopped working again
It showed the little droid with the belly open and an error message
so that means here I went again to restore it, and this time I manage to streamline a bit the process, so let's share with you guys. Remember, my idea with this process is to have STOCK, but with Cast working from any app. I have no intention to root, or flash custom this or that. I want something that I can cast without issues and hopefully it will update the next update without problems.
first of all, the CWM link I posted before is giving malware warnings on Chrome so I found an alternative, and of course XDA is the source (see downloads).
so to factory restore ADT-1 to good working condition, was the same I said before:
- install CWM:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery cwm_molly_recovery_lpx13d.img
- install stock image. CWM->install zip-> from ADB:
Code:
adb sideload update-molly-Stock-LPV79-1.zip
- reboot and let auto-update run until the end.
now to enable cast to all apps with absolutely minimal modifications to the system (hopefully enabling future updates to run without issues)
- reboot ADT-1, holding the button, enter fastboot mode
- reboot to the CWM, but without installing it:
Code:
fastboot boot cwm_molly_recovery_lpx13d.img
- in CWM go to `mount n storage` -> mount /system
and carry on to do the build.prop modification from there, the trick is that I did not have to install a custom recovery and did not have to install super user. I made the modification directly via a RAM-only CWM and that's it. So below is just a copy of my previous post
Code:
> adb pull /system/build.prop /home/budius/build.prop
then change the build.prop on my computer and rename to new_build.prop.
And back to terminal
Code:
> adb push /home/budius/new_build.prop /system/new_build.prop
> adb shell
# cd system
# mv build.prop build.prop.bak
# mv new_build.prop build.prop
# chmod 0644 build.prop
And that's all! Full cast enabled to ADT-1 with the most absolutely minimal system changes I could come up with :victory: :highfive:
Downloads:
- here you'll find a very nice workin CWM.
- good working stock Android TV image for ADT-1
bonus:
while searching stuff I found this: https://plus.google.com/+AdamLawrence/posts/5Yr5vG7QJUq
I didn't try it but it seems useful, so the link is there.
