[Q]Worth buying now and rocking Cyanogenmod? - LG Optimus 2x

Hi guys,
Right now I have a Desire HD running Cyanogenmod and it is sweet but Optimus 2x is better hardware.
All I would like to know is Cyanogenmod stable enough on this phone to be a daily user yet?
Any show stopping bugs or things I should be aware of before I make a purchase?
I don't want to run the standard Lg rom, and the fact Cyanogen has one is 90% of the reason I want one. So should I buy now or wait a bit until there is a stable release?
Thanks for your opinions.

Why buy a new phone when u got a desire HD. Stick to the desire and wait untill the nexus 3 will be released.
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA App

I like it and would switch your DHD with an O2X, but its your call, not everyone likes this device.
Basically yes, CM7 is being used by a lot of people daily including me since build 0, and by arcee long before us all.

I would say yes, since what's what I bought my O2X to do

Definitely the best way, and dhd it's still a capable terminal and allows you to use all android potential right now

O2x easy go for it..............

waste of money to switch unless you are that desperate to play HD games

I tried many devices and if u r a gamer. Ur option is only atrix and o2x. I went with o2x because the ips display and at that time atrix was locked.
U can get one noelw and enjoy it. Then by year end go with iPhone 5 or nexus 3. If ur not a gamer then get the gs2.

I'm seriously considering the LG Optimus 2X as well. The prices of this phone recently came down in India. The only thing thats holding me back is the fact that it still sports Froyo as opposed to Gingerbread in similar speced devices. But I'm quite happy that Cyanogenmod has my back with a nightly for this phone
Should I make the switch from Samsung Galaxy SL i9003 (SLCD version) to the LG? The other phone that I'm considering is the Nexus S. How stable is the Cyanogenmod nightly?

I would say go for it. The nightlies are very stable, and the O2X is actually going to be included in the 7.1.0 RC. Using the O2X on CM7 #56 for a while now, and performance, battery life and almost everything is working like a whiz. I have not actually encountered any major problems, such as the famous phone freeze. The phone is very snappy as well, and I don't see any reason why you should not make the change. =D

Gracias for your reply! Just another question- which custom ROM is preferable? Cyanogenmod or Modaco? Also, when is CM 7.1.0 RC gonna come out?

I tried FR17 Fear edition before the CM nightlies, and I would say that CM, being CM, was much snappier than FR17, but it is entirely up to individual preference though. For the RC, cyanogen has personally posted on twitter that he was hoping for it to come out by this weekend, but no promises though.

One more (I know I'm asking too many...I apologize ) How does the O2X rate against the HTC Incredible S? Will the CM ROM+LG O2X perform better than the HTC ones? I do realize that HTC phones are single core...but have more RAM than the O2X.

o2x has a tegra 2 mate. In day to day usage there will be little to no difference but the o2x will destroy games.
Personally I've decided to wait until Christmas as further research has led me to believe that there isn't a great deal of benefit from being on dual cores at this stage. There is little to none apps which utilize them properly.

Hmm... It really depends on what you want with the phone. If its for gaming, then the O2X wins the Incredible S hands down due to Tegra. However, for daily normal tasks, both might be equally fast(not sure about this, haven't tried an Incredible S yet), as Android still does not fully support multi-threaded tasks, making the O2X's dual cores not being fully utilized. However, I think that in the near future, once dual-core support comes out in probably Ice Cream Sandwich, the difference between these two phones will be greater. About RAM, although the HTCs have more RAM, the O2X already has enough RAM as it is for about anything. So I don't really see why the bigger RAM will really matter.

Cool, thanks cha0sh3r0 & dr.m0x I'm not a gamer but a business user of Androids. So gaming performance is not a criteria for me. The reasons for going in for O2X are quite a few.
1. Its around 2000 Rs (45 USD) cheaper than the Incredible S.
2. It has Cyanogenmod support...Incredible S has a locked bootloader (which may change)
3. O2X has dual-core which future proofs me when Ice Cream Sandwich comes out...either as an official LG or Cyanogenmod release.
I'm done with Samsungs and their cheap plastic builds which I really hate. HTC phones seem to have some weird "death grip" issues. LG O2X seems like a good bet for me

No prob dude

I have more faith in the community to provide help and support as opposed to a company, thats why I'm glad that Cyanogen is around
Besides, being an exclusive Linux user (yes, even at work)...hacking and modding comes easy to me

Most of the comments here are spot on. But remember CM7 doesnt support BlueTooth and A2SD. That is a basic function and the only reason many of us use Madacos. Including me

Would you reccomend the optimus 2x?

I am currently using a Motorola defy but am looking at upgrade options. The 2x is by far the cheapest dual core regarding the plan i have in mind of taking with my provider. So, Im interested if someone could tell me what were your experiences after some time of use....i am mostly concerned by the reliability and the number of different problems that people seem to be having with this model hardwarewise...is the build quality really somewhat below standard od are those just som erotten apples?
Also, regarding rooting, flashing and all similar procedures, how would you rate the respective ease of those activities on the 2x comparing to other handsets?
Not recommended.. buy Samsung Galaxy S II..
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA App
Yeah, if you want good dual core phone go for Samsung galaxy sII, HTC sensation or simply wait for nexus prime.

hell no.
if you want a cheap dual core, get the atrix
if you want to be absolutely satisfied with your phone, get the galaxy s2
wow, that bad or are you just being ironic
Guess it is going to be saving time then because the other options are at least 50% more expensive from my standpoint.
Optimus just needs more ram

There are better phones out there, I agree, but the 2x holds its own. I'd say go for it if you are on a tight budget.

No.
As others have pointed out:
Sensation (and XL) and Galaxy S2:
- Have much better versions of Android installed by default.
- Have better screens and hardware in general.
- Have companies who have improved their updating policy greatly.
Not to mention Nexus Prime, if the one who is asking is willing to wait.
Even after installing custom ROMs on this thing, I sometimes miss my HTC Desire with Oxygen ROM.
no due to the fact it's a LG phone. Spec wise the phone is great, stock software is ****. Other phones and companies seem to get updates out faster i would recommend anyone other one of them.
Like i keep saying.
Optimus 2x = Great hardware and built quality (GS2 built quality sucks IMO)
= Bad stock Rom.
So!
If your planning on installing a custom rom, like cyanogenmod, its probably the best device for the price by a mile. Am more than satisfied with CM. It's super fast stable and responsive.
If your planning to stay on stock, dont bother.
Period
I am on stock euro open v10d,and it is flawless!

If you plan on using custom firmware I would recommend it, especially cm7 feels great if you can do without fm radio.
If you're buying a phone planning to stay on the default firmware, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I can really recommend this phone. Good bang for the buck.
I have no BSOD. Maybe a reboot once a month.
Good camera. Latest software quite good.
I'm going to try CM7 next since it got A2DP support now.

It's a good phone.
Stock software was really bad at first, latest Froyo (and baseband) works good but flashing newer custom ROM's based on GB leaks made it awesome
Our developers always have something better to work with, even without full support by LG or nVidia. I mean, just look what Samsung and Sony Ericsson did by recognizing community efforts and I believe LG will do the same, in time. After all, Optimus 2X was their first attempt to play hi-end game and was released only 9 months ago. So stop whining. HTC was on the same level just last year... Been there, done that - I had HTC Hero. Now they are praised, but last year only hated.
Never tried CM, there were too many setbacks at first, some are solved by now but really never had any need... Just waiting for Topogigi's 2.0 and new HP kernel. Don't expect too much from LG, follow xda devs and Paul from MoDaCo of course. Flashing is easy and device is un-brickeable
Yeah, I was thinking if I buy it to definitely flash some custom rom so this is good info, thx .
I can only recommendation the phone, i know five people with the ox2 and no one has hade any problems. I have tried cm and the leaked ginger but i am back on stock rom now.

hi, about to buy an optimus 2x, any suggestions?

just broke my galaxy s for the third time, so i think its time to move on. i have to decide to move to an optimus 2x, or an atrix. what u guys think? From what i saw, optimus have a better camera, what means a lot for me, lg have the best cellphone cameras imo. atrix have what it seens a little more speed and more space (16gb)
what do you guys suggest me?
I would not but a LG ever again. Imho Sony camera is much better.
Sent from my LG-P990 using xda premium
sony camera is cool too, but locked bootloader and still no dual core phone (or am i late?)
o2x imo is better than the atrix, the atrix has more memory so if that's what your after then get that, i love the design and shape and size of my o2x and if it wasn't for the ****ty lg support and nvidia ****ing with us by holding back vital drivers needed for ICS dev then this phone would be the best iv ever had.
The camera is pretty great iv never seen the atrix camera so cant compare tho.
The benchmarks tests always seem to show the o2x to be ahead of the atrix even tho they both have a tegra 2 chipset.
But with the customs roms this phone is pretty decent, its fast responsive, get a custom home screen and it will be smooth as you can imagine, the lg home screen is rather choppy but i use it because i like the way you can organize apps and games into separate category rather than just throwing them together into a big mess if you can do that with adw or go launcher then someone please tell me how so i can switch.
I only paid £200 for my o2x brand new so i cant complain too much, defo worth it compared to the 400-500 they are asking for that overpriced crap called the sgs2, decent phone.... ****ty price tag, no phone is worth that much.
In Australia there are close to no people using Optimus 2xes due to no one selling them on plans/contracts. Every second person has a galaxy s2 though so they can't be that bad.
I would lean towards avoiding the atrix due to the locked bootloader. Apparently there's a 50% chance of bricking it.

It's quite possible that they sent RC what he needed, he's been asking them since day one, and is a serious coder, rather than the 'cook' type 'dev'.
I would say get one, the stock GB is apparently much improved over froyo, and CyanogenMod is just great, that's the reason I bought mine in the first place.
If I hadn't have managed to get a freebie, I'd keep mine.
For its money LG O2X is the best phone.
Please, don't buy that phone!
It's have the worst supported in the WORLD.
Nvidia and LG = S**T

the htc high end smartphones not near as fast like the o2x or the sgs2, the hardware component quality is low, if htc not change that it will be died. maybe the rom is good but it just candy.. if you want a phone what is broken often go ahead and buy a htc. i had many htc, i never ever want again.
sgs2 it will be a good choice if isn't very overpriced. by the way the samsung company almost act like the apple, soon booth company will be in the android users blacklist. o2x is a good choice but the stock lg rom is a crap, you need to flash one of the custom roms!

I dont think so.. the neo looks better and has a much better software support i guess. the neo will get the new android ice cream sandwich really soon. LG instead has a worse update policy (the users had to wait a really long time until they got gingerbread).

Very happy O2X user here too. CyanogenMod FTW!
To counter what everyone says: NONONONONO.
I honestly don't think there's a worse device to go for right now than the O2X. Sure the Dev work is good, but why go for a phone with zilch official support? The Neo's going to get ICS, I believe. The O2X might take 8 years to get it. Stay were you are.
Someone offered me a neo for my o2x once. I didnt even take the time to respond.
Off course you should go for the o2x, because it is an awesome phone!
Granted, the stock software sucks monkey balls, but custom rom support is way better than the neo. Once you put cyanogenmod on it, you can tweak it so its just how you like it. Thats why i love this phone. SE sucks imo for locking their bootloaders.

do the swap before the neo owner realises he is retarded...
I have an O2x while my sister has a Neo, both phones are good, but my O2X is faster, has better screen, and is better supported in fact of custom roms.
On the other hand, Neo looks better and has better stock rom support (and ICS soon)...
Summing everything i'll go for the O2X anyway

Would you advise me getting LG Optimus 2x?

So yeah, the title pretty much says it. Basically, I could get any phone on the market (except iPhone, it's too expensive and I don't like it). I thought about Galaxy S II, but I have heard it overheats and they don't sell the G model in my country. I also thought about the HTC EVO 3D, but I've heard it has bad cameras and a bad CPU (old architecture). So are there any other good choices? If you do think there are, please choose from here: http://elisa.ee/et/Eraklient/Pood
Thanks for the answers!
just get the galaxy s 2.
thats what i would have done if i knew that there would be such huge problems with nvidia and their damned source code.
I personally like my P990, but if NVIDIA/LG doesn't release something soon it might be not very interesting...
the galaxy II seems like a very good phone, I would go with that one
otherwise maybe the Xperia arc S?
I think the freexperia team is doing a pretty good job
So guys, I still decided to buy the 2X. The Galaxy S2 was 500 euros and I just thought that I could put that 200 euros that was left over into building a bad-ass gaming PC in the future. I'm satisfied with it right now, the stock ROM doesn't lag nearly as bad as I thought although the newest available in my country is 2.2.2 FroYo. Of course, I will root it and slap a custom ROM on it later.
Well, welcome to the family then, and I will see you around .
If you think the stock rom works fine, you should immediately root and install the lastest CM7 nightly and see how it blows your mind =D

@Topic starter:If you can get a S2 then go for it.It's a little bit better.Even so, 2 of my friends had overheating problems.

are you hurry with the smartphone??, because there will be LG 4x quad core with tegra 3 and ofcourse exynos chipset with quad core but not released yet. you should see gsmarena.com there are HTC, ZTE, huawei(if not mistaken) will get tegra 3. so the question are you really hurry in buying smartphone?? if you're in hurry yes take o2x, it's good price, and it will come CM9 based on ICS(4.0.3). but CM7 is good with KANG and etana kernel or ironkernel
I would advise you reading a bit more... there are far too many "comparison" thread floating around.

I feel a huge difference in terms of performance, and the O2X had a habbit of running out of RAM constantly, making it very laggy (this could be helped somewhat using CM7).
And don't even get me started on the whole BSOD while charging issue, that is just annoying - not being able to trust your phone at all (even if the issue seems to be rare with V20s).
The Galaxy Nexus is also capable of playing pretty much any video I can throw at it - even 1080p high profile. The O2X lagged horribly with pretty much any video I tried, mainly because most of my videos are encoded in high profile h264.
But the thing that matters the most is not the hardware, its the software - it is just great to know that you will receive the newest version of the OS in a timely manner, not delays after delays. And the releases are not filled with tons of crap (like F-Secure on the stock ROM or w/e the name of it is).
But to be fair, the O2X is a great phone (on CM7, hoping for ICS soon so it can have CM9), and I would have kept it for myself it if not for the cheap Galaxy Nexus

Come again?
If you put a dual core on a pile of crap you get o2x. Worst phone ever, i hope to get rid of it soon.
Well today I bought G Nex too. Updated it to JB and it works damn smooth. Now I just have to sell my O2X
Gnex was my first Android phone got it back in January then I got the o2x for my wife then a gtab 10.1 and recently a gnote.. Tbh gnex its an hyper boring phone.. That thing its unbrickable and every rom out there its the same boring thing.. Noone likes to "change the stock feel" same features in all roms and stable as hell..
Everything works as it should.. And the forum its boring as hell.. Same applies for gnote.. But I kept gnote stock with touchwiz since I have cm9 on my gtab and stock jelly bean on the gnex... So actually I like the stress here and gtab forums about waiting for the releases xD

Did you even read what i wrote? I wrote: "But the thing that matters the most is not the hardware". With that sentence I mean that I would rather have a single core phone with proper software, than a dual core phone with terrible software. So basically we agree.

I do not agree, the ROMs for the Galaxy Nexus might look pretty much the same on first glance, but the features are way different, for example Paranoid Android allows you to choose tablet mode and DPI per app.
Pretty much all ROMs built for the O2X are based on CyanogenMod.
02x is a good phone.. I just wish it wouldn't randomly lock up. I can't really ever trust it , in stressful situations like trying to open GPS while lost in Sydney traffic is sometimes is slow or freezes.
can't unlock from boot straight away because it might freeze etc.
I would like a more reliable phone.

Yeah, I plan to sell my P990 and get a Galaxy Nexus too... If ICS comes to the P990 by then I may change my mind, but if not, I'm not sure how I'll sell it.
"LG P990 'Optimus 2X' dual-core smartphone.
"Runs Cyanogenmod 7 (Android 2.3), no promises of any more updates though.
"Performance is up there with the SGSII, but overheating and random reboots are normal."
...yeah, I wouldn't buy it.

My partner has an Xperia Pro. Apparently ICS is available (officially) for it? I've not seen it yet, and she's not willing to unlock it and get CM9 onto it. :/
Anyhoo, this forum is not the place to ask that.
...of course, that's at no fault of the community. Mostly it's LG's fault. Not necessarily for not releasing updates/drivers/etc, but for using awful, closed hardware.
Ah well. I'll hang around in the meantime. I'm not much of a dev, so I'm with the lurking crowd, complaining in these threads about LG and NVIDIA with the rest of y'all.
For those devs hanging around here, <3 you guise. Thanks for making this phone usable, maybe even enjoyable. ICS devs in particular, your patience (if any remains) is amazing, putting up with LG's silence and peeps like us demanding a 100% stable ROM. I imagine most of us understand the situation though. ^_^

Paranoid its also based on cm9.. All the features ARE the same with some slightly differences in ui.. All they have theme engine all the have toggles all they have integrated weather, all they have extended power menu, all they have t9 dialer, all they have twickable cpu/gpu settings, all they have color correction settings, all they have power savings options.. In the end they are all the same as for the tablet mode I have a tablet and it's not attractive to me in fact I like phone mode more and Wish I could get a paranoid android for tablet that turns the tablet into phone mode lol.. Well at least jelly bean brings that to the table I love the fact that the notification bar its in the top side of the screen just like the phone does.. So Google managed to consolidate even more the OS for tablet and phones making it looks and feels almost the same on both..

So the problem is that there are no problems with the Galaxy Nexus, which makes it boring?
I aslo sold my O2X yesterday and bought a SGS3, what a difference. Like going from a Fred Flinstone "car" to a Lamborghini Spyder.
