Moving eMMC to SD Card - Nook Color General

Thanks to all the developers here, I have been enjoying the nightly CM7 running from the eMMC for about a week now. I got the nook color, liked the B&N interface, but since I wanted to do more with it, I decided to install CM7. Not knowing better, I used the easiest way to do it. With a borrowed 1GB card, I installed the nightly build to eMMC. Without much problems, I got it to where I really like it - EXCEPT - I miss the B&N UI for reading.
I now have a new SanDisk C4 4 GB microSD card but I can't figure out what I want to do. Ideally, I want to move my install from eMMC (8GB) to SD Card (4GB) and then restore eMMC to stock 1.2. I already know how to do step 2. But I don't know how to do step 1.
The other option would be to restore to stock first, then install CM7 AGAIN to the new SD Card. The only problem is that I will have to redo the little tweaks I have done over the week. I like the way it works now and don't want to do everything again. In fact, I like what I have so much, I am willing to give up B&N UI. Can I backup and restore?
Any suggestions appreciated.

Why is the Nook Color so different?

I just ordered a Nook Color from eBay with the $50 off... happy yes I am!
I've been with Android since the G1, now I have a droid... how come flashing ROMS and SD cards are so different? You have to put it internally on the Nook instead of on the SD card? Flashing off SD card causes problems? CWR doesn't work? Can anyone explain? It seems much tougher than my droid, just putting the file on my sd card then going to recovery and hitting update, or same with the gTab or Adam.
Unlike most phones, flashing a majority of ROMs (not all) for the NC wipes the Recovery -- ie, wipes it off the device.
So you create a Recovery SD card (the NC auto-boots into it) and then flash ROMs just like you would for a phone. Then take out the SD card when done with Recovery.
It wipes only the recovery correct? Not anything on the sd card? Ill search up how to make partition for recovery sd. Thanks.

Yeah, it'll wipe everything on the NC only, and not touch the SD card.
Here's the thread for creating a 3.0.0.6 Recovery SD Card (needed for CM7 Gingerbread ROM):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959240
See post #19 for detailed instructions.
For FroYo I believe you need to use 3.0.0.5, found elsewhere.
just ordered my NC off ebay too. i'm reading up all i can as fast as i can. coming from an evo where wiping is too easy, this is going to be a bit more complicated, i can't wait!!!
More complicated, maybe, but also much safer since you basically cannot brick an NC... No matter how badly you screw up the internal flash, you can always boot from SD to fix things.
I bought 3 Nook Colors yesterday and rooted every one of them and installed HoneyComb on one, all in less that 2 hours start to finish including downloading images and making the SD card. I made one SD card with CWR with images for the stock ROM, CyanogenMod 7 and HC eMMC v4. It all works flawlessly. This thing really is simple to manipulate. I had more trouble making a gold card and rooting my HTC Inspire!
Well I want to chime in on this too now because I'm new to this as well. What are the advantages/disadvantages of nookie froyo on the sd card vs flashing a rom to the internal?

well sd cards are slow and internal memory(eemc) is fast
if you install froyo/cm7/HC on your eemc it will run much faster vs running from sd card, running from sd card is good though if you want to try out a rom without losing your current setup

[Q] Best ROM for flash support while browsing and is bootable off an SD card?

Hello,
I'm looking to get a ROM that boots off of an microSD card (leaving the internal memory of the NC stock and not rooted) that is relatively stable and has good flash support for playing videos on youtube, listening to podcasts on google reader, etc. I am a bit of a n00b. I don't want to mess with the stock B&N OS. It's a very good eReader. So, the idea of a dual-boot option sounds great to me! I was able to get honeycomb flashed to a microSD card and working on my NC. I was surprised by how easy it was! I was also able to figure out how to get the Android Marketplace working, although that wasn't easy (I hope this gives you an idea as to my level of incompetence). So of the available ROMs out there that support flash and that boot off a microSD card, which is best for somebody n00bish, like me?
Try Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 customized version. I used it and runs really well from micro sd. Just make sure you have a fast (at least class 6) micro sd card.

CM7 on eMMC, stock 1.2 on SD...how do I make a nandroid of CM7?

I followed the like here to put a copy of stock 1.2 on my sdcard http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1061523
I am about to replace CM7 back on my eMMC, but I was slightly confused about how to make nandroids of CM7. Given the fact that CM7 requires an sdcard for storage, do I have to have a separate sdcard in order to make nandroid backups or can I simply use the sdcard with stock 1.2 now on it? Thank you for the clarification.

How many cards do you have. If you have only one you will either have to buy a new one or wipe the one you have just to do the install. I kept my original card with the install image on it in the event I ever totally screw the Nook up and have to start from scratch and just bought another card for use with CM7 on the eMMC. You can always wipe the card clean again after your install and use it, but you are probably better off buying an additional card "just in case". You can't leave the card as is because if it is in the Nook when you start up the Nook will automatically boot from the card. You don't want to keep switching it in and out every time you use the Nook as eventually the card door will probably fall off and ultimately the contacts will stop working. Cards are cheap.

As of now, I have 2 cards: one with stock 1.2 on it, and another used as storage for CM7 for nandroid backups and whatever else. If possible, I would like to just have the one to serve both of those purposes, but I wasn't sure if that was possible.
As far as keeping the stock 1.2 card in the slot...someone in the aforementioned thread made a comment about replacing the u-boot.bin file with the one from this thread for a boot menu. I gave it a try and it worked. I was able to leave the stock 1.2 card in the slot, power on, and select to either boot to CM7 on emmc or boot to stock 1.2 on the sdcard. But I switched it back to the original u-boot.bin file, since I needed a storage card for CM7, which is what I run 90% of the time.
Is there any hope for using the stock 1.2 card as the CM7 storage card, as well?
You can't use a bootable card for storage unless you want to keep taking it out when you boot up first. The NOOK will always boot from a bootable card if it is in the slot unless you use a dual boot system. Even then it is booting from the card first and then switching to the eMMC.

brand new nook color root?

Hi guys, I just got a new color and want to root it. Ive read and it gets a little confusing and Im wondering where I can find full instructions or maybe even a video on how to fully root it. I have the new version 1.3.0. Also, what is the best rom to use right now? Thanks.
Do you want the the internal system or use a MicroSD card to accomplish it?
I have done 4 Nooks using the uSD card and it has worked very well.
I just did this last night, and there is a very simple tutorial here
(hope its ok to post this link)

I did everything they said, and it went smoothly. Now I have an awesome "tablet"!
Thanks. I am writing the image file now. When all is said and done, do I have to worry about OTA updates from Barnes and Nobel and if so what can I do to prevent them???
I rooted my daughters nook tablet and had to go through the process of blocking updates from barnes and nobel because it was preventing her from installing apps other than from barnes and nobel. Just wondering if the color will be the same since this is a full root.

This guide says to use a Nook Color with 1.2. Will it work with one that is running 1.3?
Yes, I have 1.3 and used this method posted above and I am now running Cyanogenmod 7.2. Looks reat! Now I need to find out about updates........
32GB SD
So if I purchase a 32GB SD card can I use the left over storage on the SD card after rooting? Also, I thought I heard that a class 4 SD card is the best to get. Anything slower, may cause issues. Is that correct as well? My new nook is on tha way and I am getting ready to root it.
Thanks in advance.
You should use a class 4 Sandisk card.. even faster cards of other brands do not work as well.

1. Yes
2. Anything other than a Sandisk is going to cause issues.

One last newbie question. So if I have a 4GB SD card formatted to boot with WinDiskImager, can I use that to back up my original nook 1.3 image before I root it? Then copy the CM7 and google apps zip files to it and use that to root it? Once rooted place a blank 32GB SD card it in for storage use? Then I can keep my 4GB SD card as a backup and also us it for root updates? Am I on the right track.
Thanks in advance, this thread has been helpful!

CWM SD Card Question

I just bought a new Nook, to give to my mother. I am going to put CM7 on it for her(Internal Memory) and I was wondering the easiest way to do this, because I already have an SD card that if you insert it will boot the Nook into Clockwork. I used that to put CM7 on my own nook. Can i just boot the new one up with that SD card in it and CM7+gapps in it, and flash them? Or do I need to somehow *root* the new Nook before I can do this? I'm just not really sure how the entire process works. I should point out that my Nook is from a while back and hers is obviously brand new, in case there have been hardware changes that would effect it.
You do not need to root the nook to install CM7 on it... the hardware changes will most likely already been merged into CM7...
The one caveat... if its an old CWM SD... make sure you have the newest... or convert it to a TWRP card.
Is hers a Color or a Tablet? There is a difference. If it's a Color, see the link in my sig.
