[Q] Phone Bricked?

Ok, so I had my Captivate flashed back to stock and had it rooted. I decided to update from JF6 to JH7 through Kies Mini. After it finished updating, my phone was stuck at the Samsung Galaxy S screen and then it turned black, but the buttons still light up.
I already tried doing the 3 button recovery/download mode in every way possible, but my phone won't seem to go into recovery mode or download mode no matter what I do.
When I leave the usb cable plugged into the phone as I turn it on, my computer plays the notification sound where a device has been connected, but still black screen on the phone. Happens when the AT&T screen loads, wonder if that would help somehow
Please help!

If you had usb debugging enabled you can send a "adb reboot download" or "adb reboot recovery" command to reboot the phone. If not then you probably have to make one of those usb jig's with the 301k resistor.
But you should still be able to enter download mode if you pull the battery, press the vol up/down and put the battery back. My stock phone couldn't enter recovery but it could get into download mode, keep trying.
Hmmmm. Still doesn't work when I pull out the battery, plug in the usb cable, hold the volume + and - down, and put the battery back on. It just shows the battery charging.
i have something similiar just have battery showing and wheel spinning when connected to pc or AT&T logo flashing if powered on and can't get into download mode...How does one get back to reality at this point.
your phone does not have the button combinations required to enter either download or recovery mode. I guess what you should have done before doing anything to your phone was test the button combinations in case something screwed up. then you should have flashed stock with the odin package posted in the development forum with the 3 button fix. I had to do this for my friend's captivated after realizing the button fix was disabled, but I hadn't broken the booting of the phone then. but now to fix it, other than trying to use adb to reboot into download, I have no idea what to do.
Looks like you'll need to make a JIG. Here's one thread on it:

Made a jig with parts bought from Radio Shack.
the jig was a success to get the phone back to download mode

Odin not recognizing phone

Im trying to flash my phone to 2.2 *captivate*, but everytime I put my phone off, take out batter and sim card, then put battery in, hold the two volume buttons on the left and plug the usb cable in, odin does not recognize it. It is only recognized when I put my phone on. (drivers installed) Pleae answer, Ive spend so long on this. Also, when I try to go into download mode, the yellow guy doesnt show up, it just goes to a battery charging state
Ensure that phone USB has debug enabled in the development menu under applications in settings... And hold the buttons, insert USB cable until the phone goes into download mode. Yellow triangle... Odin should then see the port...
Are you using original factory cord?
Have you tried all usb ports?

Yes Im using the original factory chord. Ive tried all of the usb ports except one. Trying it right now. It is still only recognized when the phone is on though.

Do you have odin open

yeah its open
Where did you get the drivers from?
Try the drivers from samsung
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SGH-I897ZKAATT
If the same message pops up click on it. It should give you the option to choose drivers. Navigate to these drivers, I believe they get saved to c drive, program files, samsung.

how do you get into recovery mode?
Recovery our download mode?
Recovery
volume up and down and power. Wait till at&t screen comes on let go
download mode, needed for odin
Remove bat, sim, and external sd. Put bat back in, put cover on. Hold volume up and down hold, put usb in . Should be in download mode in a second or two

My computer wouldnt recognize my phone either after a while... it turned out to be the crappy samsung usb cable. I tried a different cable and everything was fine. If you have a different usb cable try it! Maybe that will solve it. It did for me. Good luck.
my phone is recognized by the computer, just not when it is off
Sounds like you have the"no 3 button recovery"issue. You should be able to use adb with phone on to boot into recovery, just be ready before you get carried away and get/make a jig as you will likely need it at some point to get you out of a bad flash where adb commands are not possible.
So... That didn't work
So i am having the problem with ODIN not seeing my phone when in download mode, although it can when it is on. I really want to get CM7 on my phone and do my own boot animation/splash screen. Yet I can't seem to find any good information as to how to fix this.
I am not a NOOb at this nore am I dev. but this is something new that no one has seemed to be able to fix.
If anyone knows how to fix this that would be awesome, or if any dev with a fair amount of credit would want so give this a go that would be awesome.
Hoping to get some ideas...
I highly recommend buying a jig. I use mine all the time to go to download. I have softbricked many times and it has saved me.

So i think that i figured it out... After you install the drivers from samsung you need to install mini keis. It loads additional driver that allow the device to connect while in download mode
Good Luck

[Q] Stuck on stupid:can't force download

Hate to be that guy, but alas I am
I flashed my Captivate with the latest Twingerbread ROM. Everything was running nice and smooth until I decided to use a Galaxy S Mod tool from the market place to change my battery icon.
Long story short the phone is now stuck trying to boot. It will run the Twingerbread loading animation for a few seconds, flash a screen that says
Candidates:
Preparing external SD Card
and then continue with the loading animation.
Before this happened I had been able to force download mode using only the volume up/down buttons, that is no longer the case. I have tried using adb to access and force download but the phone isn't found whether powered off or in it's current "loading" state. ODIN is able to recognize it as a COM:7 device but fails to flash it.
I'm in a bit over my head here, anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?
Try this:
Open Odin and plug the cable into your computer only not your phone
Remove your battery from your phone
Wait 30 seconds and put it back in, don't turn your phone on
Hold both volume buttons down and then plug the cable into your phone, it should go into download mode.

Thank you for the suggestion but I can't get that to work for me. I tried it multiple times but it simply loads the charging screen. I have heard the term jig thrown around a time or two in here but can't seem to find any more info on it. Would that be my next step?
Yes if that doesn't work then you will need to get a jig to force download mode. Look here....http://www.mobiletechvideos.com/blog/?page_id=100
Good Luck
Nice, I don't have to make it even. Thanks for helping the noob out, jhernand1102. Hopefully this cures my issue.

[Q] I think I finally bricked my phone. Nothing seems to fix it

I'm getting the phone-/!\-computer problem.
Here's what happened: I was flashing Odin3 for the millionth time, but this time it didn't go past "DO NOT UNPLUG PHONE!!" phase for about 20 mins. So, I unplugged it and took out the battery as it seemed like I have no other choice. Then, trying to boot the phone, all I get is the phone-/!\-computer symbol.
I went through the Odin3 post and saw others with the problem and some of them being able to get into Download Mode by holding Vol Up + Vol Down + Power, letting it cycle twice, and letting go of power when the screen turns black the second time, but it didn't work for me. I can't seem to get it into Download mode.
It also does not work when I hold down Vol Up + Vol Down and connect the usb, as it has in the past. Nor does it work with just Vol Down or just Vol Up.
I just tried the One-click Unbrick on a Windows 7 PC and a Linux PC and on both of them it did not detect my phone.
What are my options with my phone?
Did you have GB bootloaders? If so, download mode is Vol down + pwr button.
I was going to stock from Cognition 4.5.3, so I'm guessing I didn't. In any case, that combo doesn't really do anything to my phone but turn it on (to the phone-/!\-computer screen) when it's off.
make/buy a jig and if when you use it you still get the phoone...!...pc image try falshing from that screen as the image for download mode might not have been wrutten to the phone so the only image to call on when booted into download mode is the 'incomplete flash' screen you're seeing.
Will a Jig definitely boot my phone into download mode? Or is it kind of another thing to try?
Edit: the only reason I ask is because the methods that have always gotten me into Download Mode don't seem to work now.
making one can be take a little finesse to get right, a properlay made one that you buy should do it first thing.
but like i said you might not get the download mode image on the screen even though the phone has booted into dl mode. that is just a pic that the firmware contains that is called on when dl mode is booted, if the flash that resulted in the phone...!....pc screen failed before the dl mode image was written then the phone...!....pc is the only thing you will see even though it actually IS in dl mode

I know that I'm not getting it in Download Mode now because the computer never seems to be able to recognize it, so I will order a Jig and see if I can get it to work.
To further elaborate, I have gotten it into Download mode using 3 button combo many times before, and holding down the buttons does make the screen turn black, and then go back to the phone-/!\-computer screen, so it is doing something. Will the Jig work in this situation, since the buttons are working but it's not going to download mode?
A jig will always force download mode, unless of coarse the usb port on the phone is broken.
To my understanding if the jig doesn't work not much else you can do except a Jtag service, that's more expensive than buying or making a jig. A easy how to for a jig is here. They aren't expensive to buy ~$10 but if you are in a rush and have the patience that how to will works wonders.
Easy download mode
I have bricked my phone 3 times now. I have always been able to get to download mode using this method:
1. Remove the battery, sim card, sdcard if you have one
2. Insert the battery
3. Hold both Volume buttons
4. Plug in the USB cable and continue holding both Volume buttons
or
Method 2:
1. Remove the battery, sim card, sdcard if you have one
2. Plug in the USB cable
3. Hold both Volume buttons
4. continue holding both Volume buttons and Insert the battery
If your computer is not detecting your USB connection every time, find a different cable to use. This is what fixed my phone the last time.
I haven't had to try this method personally, but I've heard great things about it.

P1010 Bricked....?

Hello everyone!
I have a serious problem with my Wi-Fi Only Galaxy Tab. It came with Froyo out of the box and I tried installing GB via ODIN but in the middle of the process, my computer turned off because of a blackout and my tablet was in download mode with the big "DO NOT TURN OFF" warning. The process wouldn't resume after I got my computer back on and I had to turn off the Tab. The problem is that now it won't turn on, when I press the power button (long enough, about 10 seconds) the LCD turns on in black and if I let go of the power button it goes back off. Tried connecting to the PC but nothing happens, tried charging for more than 4 hours and still got nothing.
HELP PLEASE!

So to get this straight... you cant go into downloading mode or recovery? Even if it doesnt display it on the tab... try holding power and volume down while odin is open (reinstall the drivers too) If that doesnt work then I believe you sir have a hard brick and have messed up your bootloader. If that's the case i just saw a post about a service that fixes them for 50$ somewhere on the gt7 forums...
Just go to download mode again and reflash. Don't forget about battery.
