I'm waiting for a replacement on my bricked Vibrant and I am running my G1 right now. I figured I would update the rom since I'm going to be using it for a little while. Now I am running CM 4.2 and the last time I flashed this on here I had like 20 steps to do and needed a pc. Now with the use of clockwork recovery and everything else available I'm assuming I can get away with flashing away from home and the use of a pc. I notice some newer roms with custom kernals available which is what I'm aiming for but I am not sure if I should grab the latest available CM or if other devs roms are more updated. Will I need anything else other than CWR since I'm already rooted? What are the steps I need to take to accomplish this?
Thanks in advance

you should be able to just get cm 6.1 and its gapps then do a full wipe of your phone and then flash cm6.1 then the gapps and you should be set from there
What's gapps? Do I use cwr for wipe and flash?

I see some roms have "requirements" as that frozo rom has requirements for SPL, radio and ext4 partion. I'm pretty sure all this is out dated on this unit and I don't think I'm on ext4 partion I don't remember converting any data when I flashed cm 4.2

I am already on CM7. Everything is fine, but I would like to flash Continuum. I already have 2.3.3 (and presumably the bootloaders). My question is: Exactly what method should I use to install? I try to avoid ODIN if I can help it. It gives me panic attacks. Lol

Just read over the op for C5. if you already have the 2.3 boot loaders you only need to flash the no boot version in recovery. The instructions in the op are very detailed.

You could always try flashing it without bootloaders and check it out. I have tried the other 2.3.3 ROMS out there and I find this one to be really smooth with very little issues. Battery is good, Rotation is great, Camera works good. If you have a Jig, you should not have any problems with ODIN.
When I went from CM7 to Continuum, I flashed back to Stock first just to be safe. Continuum V.5 RC2 is by far less buggy and smoother than CM7 in IMHO. I love it.

Flash w/o bootloaders and you lose recovery. Then you have to use odin to go back to stock.

The process layed out in the first post for Continuum works perfectly, I wouldn't be worried about flashing the one with bootloaders, as long as you READ every step in detail first!
Using Heimdall in Linux to install Continuum
I'm ready to install Continuum v5, but would prefer to avoid Odin and Windows. I'm running Cognition 4.3.1 now; installing that was easy, just using CWM recovery.
Anyone know how to install Continuum using Heimdall? Also, how do I flash back to stock using Heimdall?
TIA.
Doesn't Continuum v5 have ext4 by default?
Someone on the main Continuum forum said that the ext4 file system does not come installed by default but it could be enabled using the ext4 app in the app drawer. This sounds ridiculous. To change file systems, you have to do the equivalent of reformatting the partition. In order to not lose all your data, you would have to back up, change the file system, then restore. I doubt very much you could do that with a phone app.
Am I wrong?
Yes you are wrong. The app boots the phone into recovery backs up, converts, restores, and then reboots. All from one button press in the app.
I have used on perception2 beta 1 and took minute rebooted then had nothing change and didn't backup then converted back to rfs and flash beta 2 and lost nothing

Do I need 3 button combo to install using odin 3 button?
My captivate does not have the 3 button combo, so I have no way to get into download mode on my own. I have never used the Odin 3 button, but am very familiar with Odin one click. Odin one click automatically puts my phone into download mode in order to finish flashing to stock. I am wanting to install continuum v5, and understand the instructions fully, but just wanted to make sure before I started, that I can successfully install using icezars instructions, without the need for 3 button combo. Can anyone confirm if this is possible, or if I need to install the 3 button combo fix that is floating around the forums? Thanks in advance for any help.
I currently have Continuum V4 and used have AIO Captivate Toolbox to install most roms.
First it's not called "odin 3 button" it's just odin 3.
You don't technically need the button combo to flash it but if something goes awry and you end up in s boot loop, or soft brick your only fix then would be a jig...
After you make it to gingerbread you will have a working combo ... The buttons will be different thats in the op of continuum 5 ...
Thanks for clearing that up. I'm not sure where I came up with calling it that, and I've read plenty about Odin 3, but have still been a bit nervous when it comes to utilizing it. I am confident that I can follow directions well, and have read the instructions several times as well as many of the posts. I may have to order myself a jig just in case something does get messed up, but I'm antsy to get me some gingerbread love.
Again, thank you for the help.
Hi guys, I've just recently started becoming curious about NANDROID and it's capabilities...
I understand that it is basically an "image" of your HD etc, but to what extent?
The main reason I'm asking this is because I've tried flashing (twice) to CM7 and both times I had issues with it so I had to go through the process of reverting back to stock ROM, then a hacked ROM then to Darky's etc etc.
So is it possible to take NANDROIDs of both CM7 and Darky's and just restore either at any time?
I believe that CM7 runs on an MTD filesystem (or whatever it is, it's different to the stock ROMs) and I may run into issues if the correct files aren't flashed beforehand, but will the NANDROID backup/image all of this as well?
So in short, can I NANDROID for example: Froyo 2.2 stock, Gingerbread 2.3.3, Darky's 10.1 and CM7 and switch between any and all of them at any time without running into file system issues or any other issues?
Thanks very much in advance!
No you cannot. Because: CM7 runs on froyo bootloaders and Darky's 10.1 is Gingerbread and requires Gingerbread bootloaders and these can only be changes via odin. I don't think nandroid backs up the kernel either so you can't move from GB to Froyo this way either, but you may be able to just restore your data (apps) between froyo and GB(I haven't tried).

Ahhhhh ok, thank you very much for the reply.
I was under the impression that NANDROID took a whole image of everything, but it does not.
So does this mean that to go from Darky's to CM7, I just flash the EZBase 2.2 then restore CM7 via NAND?
And CM7 -> Darky's just EZBase (optional/unnecessary, correct?) > GB > Restore Darky's via NAND?
Thanks again for the reply!
When moving between froyo and gingerbread only restore apps, NOT apps+ data, or you will encounter problems
GTi9000 insanity cm012/glitch
I'd say to go to CM7 from Darky's GB flash either the 2.2 Ezbase or froyo Ezboot(search it up), and then flash a CM7 kernel(either stock or Glitch or whatever) then format system, cache, data and datadata then restore.
Then to go from CM7 I'd go Ezbase Gingerbread then install a JVH kernel(Ezbase is JVB and the kernel isn't compatible with JVH) via odin then restore. I'd be careful though, I haven't tried this out and I don't use CM7, it's probably easier to just pick one or the other, follow the proper procedures to get to it without shortcuts and stick with it.

Ahhhh I see... I will have to do a little more research.
I'm in the process of trying to decide which one to stick with.
I've only just started flashing recently so I don't know a whole lot, especially about versions and compatability.
(So this means I can skip the EZBase 2.2 and just go with EZBase 2.3? I didn't know there was a GB EZBase, hehe)
Darky's was the first custom ROM I ever flashed and I absolutely loved it, but I had heard about CM7 and that it was much more customizable and quicker and this and that so I decided to give it a try.
The first two flashes of CM7 worked ok, but I got hit with a force close loop caused by switching between 2G/3G and as a result went back to Darky's. After a few weeks I've found out how to apply a fix and it has fixed the issue and now CM7 works well (flashed + fixed a couple days ago).
But now I'm having issues with the phone shutting itself down (or screen not responding to buttons so it stays dark, unsure which. I can't hold the power button to turn it back on but I can enter download mode, so I'm assuming either the screen stays off or it is stuck in some kind of semi-awake state.) and also the battery doesn't last like Darky's did...
So I'm thinking of just reverting back to Darky's for now, might come back to CM7 when there is a stable release or something like that.
Sorry to make you read all that, but anyway, the help is much appreciated! 8D

Make sure battery is charged before you start

Yeah, I tried to update to nightly 30 to try and fix the phone dying issue, but it put my phone into a bootloop...
Had to do a restore for the first time ever but it worked as far as I can see.
What is your battery like on Insanity?
On Darky's I was able to get 2-3 days fairly easily (using Juice Defender Ult) but CM7 it lasted maybe a day (and even lost 20% while it was idling in my pocket while I was at work for 3 hours somehow...)
If you do come to the insane side, once installed pm me and will help you set up

I was on Darky's ROM for 5 months and now for 7 weeks have been on CM7.
CM7 eats 25-30 % more power than Darky's ROM.
Being on CM7 I have never had any FCs.
OK GUYS. Kinda noob here, need some help.
-On Captivate (obviously)
-Was on 2.2 Froyo
-Rooted phone using superoneclick.
-pleased overall. Looked into new ROMs, but couldnt quite get an understanding
-Ended up updating to Gingerbread 2.3.5 via kies mini
-killed my root access
Here are my issues:
-Cannot figure out how to root
alternatively, cannot figure out how to revert back to froyo to root, then download and apply Cyanogenmod7, which is what i actually want
-When i was rooted on froyo 2.2, i would try to use ROM MANAGER and it kept saying the SD needed to be mounted, even though it was.
Basically, if someone could either copy-paste (or provide a link to) a guide as to how i can go from 2.3.5 Gingerbread to Cyanogenmod 7, i would be forever greatful.
I want to be able to overclock my cpu for better proformance, plus have FULL costomization abilities. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND I ROOTED MY CAP WHEN IT WAS 2.2 YESTERDAY, AND THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH ANY SORT OF MODDING.

Take a look in the development section.
You'll need to run one of the one-click stock ODIN or HEIMDALL packages with CWM baked in to get you a setup that will work for going to CM7 (there's one in my sig if you need it).
Once you do that, look for the CM7 thread in the Development section. It has a step-by-step guide to flashing CM7 (basically download, backup, flash).
well if you used super one click to root it back then, i would use super one click (new version) to root it again...
cm 7 has instructions.
if you really wanna know how to root 2.3.5...it's in the general section.

You'll want to take a look at the kernels compatible with Cog, I'm not familiar with Cog, so I can't give you any direction as to which one you could try
Froyo isn't as freaking kernel picky as gingerbread. Any froyo kernel will work, just remember if you use a reoriented I9000 kernel you will need to flash an I9000 modem as well. This will also give you hsupa at the cost of audience chip support.

I am really struggling as to whether it's worth upgrading to stock GB.
I mean the "newer and better" is sitting there beckoning me with its siren song, but there appear to be lots of little landmines that people are then regretting the upgrade.
1) tethering mgr error
2) bad battery life
3) random shutdowns/reboots
etc, etc
Are the "benefits" really noticeable such that it is worth taking the risk of the landmines and the time/hassle of trying to fix them?
Friends
I have few questions about i897
1. Is there any way to downgrade from CM10 to CM7 other than flashing stock and rooting?
2. If this is only the way, how can i find the bootloader version. I am now running slimbeen and i am purchased it from ebay with custom rom. Bootloader screen is at&t logo and world phone. I don't know is it 2.2 or 2.3
3. Back button is little laggy. I found a solution in xda about updating touch driver using secret code *#*#2663#*#*. But this code is not working in my captivate. Is this due to custom rom?
4. During taking photos temperature of cell increases and battery drains quickly. Is it normel?
Thanks

If you want to go down to gingerbread just to use touch firmware update
Then you should not do it, this can brick your touch firmware and you may not be able to use your mobile without adb
And for downgrading purpose
Backup your sdcard (as it can get formatted in the process)
Then flash a cm7 rom
Without completing the installation it will reboot
Boot into recovery again and flash cm7 again
This time you will have working cm
