[Q] New Root - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys i just used the RUU and then re-rooted. My question is what setup do you guys suggest. Im not just talking about which rom i should use this time (i was previously using cm 7.0.3). I mean what ROM, KERNEL, MODS, SCRPITS, PATCHES, ETC. I want my phone to be as fast as possible because i am tired of the hero's lag. I love my phone but frankly i have got to speed it up since im still like 4 months from getting a new phone (Hopefully a Nexus 3!!)

Do you install a lot of apps?

Only about 35-45

Firerats if you can get it to work, no idea what you did wrong but we all know it works.
®patience is a virtue©

I fixed it by not following the directions lol. I used mtdpartmap at 120 15 and then i did all the wiping, flashed the fr recovery, rewiped, DID NOT REBOOT RECOEVERY, flashed gingerbread deck, flashed gapps, flashed sobe kernel, flashed fr boot, rebooted and it suprisingly worked. Now im going to flash the ram optimization script.

Constant rebooting

i have had my ATT N1 for a few months now and all has been great. I rooted awhile back and have been using Cyanogen 5.0.7 to great success. I have the pershoot kernal and never really had any issues.
Well, that has all changed. Recently I have been rebooting any many different occasions. It almost always does it when I am in Maps and navigation, which is not good because I need it in my life having relocated.
I have decided that maybe I will look to update my Cyanogen or maybe go over to 2.2. I did this today and still having these issues. I tried Kang and it still rebooted randomly and when I tried Modacos r17 it just would keep rebooting at the setup screen. I think that has to do with not having the stock kernal.
Any clues as to what is happening? I really need help and do not want to stop using Android, but I need my phone to be reliable.
If it happens on any ROM and with no correlation to anything - sounds like HW problem.
Did you use overclocked kernel?
I do have a overclocked under volted kernal
sounds like bad sw. get back to stock 2.1 update 1 (if you can) and see if your phone is stable...
WIPE all ( everything ) , and flash 2.2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=692609
Follow those 3 easy steps there !
Does your phone lock up (unresponsive) before rebooting?
Phone doesnt lock up. I tried wiping evertyhing but could not wipe the sd partition. Is that necessary? I have done full wipe's (data, dalvik, & cache) and still had similar results. I have updated my kernal to the newest pershoot and I installed Kang .9b1 and so far have only had 1 rebbot. It happened when I was in the browser and went to a flash heavy site to see how it worked. Is there any 2.2 roms that keep it close to stock? I am not a total fan of adw launcher.
Have a look in this thread,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703687
I'm really determined to figure out what is causing this issue for so many people! I've managed to cure my reboots for the time being, and it seems it is kernel related. That said, we need as many people as possible to give feedback as experiences seem to differ in regards to the ROMs and Kernels people are using.
Regards.
I looked over that thread and see some similarities but it is still not totally consistent with my issues. I am running Kang now fine but still have reboots that I won't call so random anymore. It happens when I use Maps for the first time, and definitely when I go to a flash site on the browser.
I cannot successfully use any other ROM since once I install it it goes into boot loop. This is driving me crazy and do not like the thought of being stuck to one ROM since it is the complete reason I bought this phone.

Changing Roms

I'm currently running the ROM & kernel you see in my signature.
Obviously I've already got the FroYo radio, and the kernel mentioned... do I have to get rid of those to use a different ROM? If I want to switch to a different ROM (just to play around) do I just flash it? What, exactly, do I have to wipe before doing so?
Just rooted a few days ago for the first time, and though I'm getting the hang of it, I sill have much to learn.

[Q] Recovery and Kernels.

Hi, I have ran into a small problem that might be solved with me flashing a custom rom, but I don't really want to do that. I have searched and didn't find anything, so here we go. I was recently on BeatMod GB and I enjoyed it for a while but from my experience in terms of what I am looking for, the stock 1.6 rom beats all I have used. What I want to do is be able to keep the custom recovery image that I have flashed numerous times without it going back to the stock recovery and I'm afraid to flash kernels because of the same situation. It is rooted as I have superuser and setcpu and both are functional so I know its rooted but nothing else I do seems to want to stay. Is there anything besides flashing a custom rom that I can do? Heh, this is to ultimately overclock my phone to 700mhz and hopefully play angry birds without lag. All the other roms won't run angry birds from what i have experienced..... unless I did something wrong haha. Thanks in advance for your help
I looked around a bit more and found that if I used a "defanged" base then all the stuff that is flashed won't revert back to stock, but will this work if I use the stock 1.6 rom? Thanks again for help.
edit: Alright, I think that I have everything under control now, I used the defanged base and Amon RA's recovery is still there along with root and all of that.... So I have just one more question, hopefully someone can answer this one :] is there a kernel I can flash for overclock for stock 1.6? I cannot find one that I think would work... Thanks for the help :]
I was wondering the same thing. :3

I have it up and running on my X. Got the link from your thread in Rootzwiki. Thanks for releasing this.
I've got this rom on my samsung fascinate, and I have to say, it's the best rom out there. Even better than cm7. Does every single function work with this rom (gps, camera?) And in order to install it, is all I need to be on a rooted .34 and use bootstrap?
Sold my fascinate and my droidx and now both have miui and my HTC device does not. Looks like i have cake on my face.

It's a nice rom, I was on CM7, went to Apex, and then used bootstrap to get to Miui. I heard that the GPS does work(but my phone isn't activated and i can't use wifi to try it myself), I can confirm that the camera(pictures and video) works. as far as rooted .34, I don't know what that means?
thanks for ur quick response. So it's assumed that all the functions are working! I'll put this on my cousin's droid x asap! What I meant was, what were the initial steps that needed to be taken before I install this rom. There are no clear steps that I can find on this post at least.
You're welcome, all I did was use the Droid 2 bootstrapper(since that was what i had, and I was on Apex at the time which I think is a froyo based rom?), and went into recovery and did a factory restore, and installed the zip, and it booted. I took a risk, skipped backing up the rom and stuff before installing MIUI, but yeah make sure to back up the rom and stuff before you use the bootstrapper. I also read that full resolution should be working on the camera, the MIUI camera isn't included though, just the AOSP camera. Also the live wallpaper(only one on there) works.

I understand this runs the froyo kernel so im on liberty 2.1 can i bootstrap to recovery and flash this? Oh and do I need google apps as well?
Edit: Do I need to sbf back to stock then to cm7 then to miui?
Which version of Android is Liberty 2.1 based on(not sure if it matters as much as which kernel it's based on, if someone will clear it up for me), and which kernel is it based on? I don't know much about that rom. I know that at least the Market and Google Talk are included, Gmail is in there also(don't know if that's something that wouldn't be in a custom rom ie CM7).
EDIT: You should be able to install it from rooted froyo at least, but it would be good to find out if you could do it from Liberty, so you won't waste your time just in case you can.
Its 2.2 and I couldnt get it to install so i sbf'd back to stock and trying again.
Have you got it running? EDIT: This is Juanito216, i didn't know my sisters account was logged in lol.
Not booting apparently you need d2 bootstrap........sbf'ing again.
Edit: Still at moto logo. 4 minutes now not booting.
I recently installed MIUI on a coworkers OG Droid and fell in love. To have it on my X just a week later is awesome. This ROM is tizzits.
I can get cm7 to boot up but not miui wtf am I doing wrong?
Where the hell is everyone? Even IRC is completely empty.
Have you done a factory restore? Did you try wiping cache?

Im on my third sbf now. I rooted stock froyo got d2 bootstrap, got cm7 running, updated cwm to the latest version, wiped data and flashed miui and get stuck at m logo everytime.
I don't know what the issue could be, hopefully you can get it up and running soon.

[Q] another which rom thread

hello
im on 2.3.6 now and fancy a change because when i click phone or messages it keeps closing and its starting to do my head in.
which rom should i go for?
could you guys point me in the direction of a good guide were i can flash with odin.
iv flashed both my phones a few times but im still a noob
thanks guys/girls
CyanogenMod (7) was fairly simple to flash and it was my first rom on the phone. I'm currently on Team ICSSGS' rom -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1398223
The latest release was pulled pending wifi fixes, but I'm using it and it's working great for me.
Just need to be rooted and running CWM to flash it.
was looking at that before
ill wait till they fix it and put it back up
how do i flash it.
i dont have a clue i only know how to use odin. and to be honest i think my 3 year old son could work it lol
does anyone know a good rom that i can flash with odin no messingvaround that looks something like this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1460786&highlight=2+3+6
just looking for something a little different but stalble as well
I think for the majority of the roms now you need to be rooted and have CWM installed. CM7 is a very nice rom, and not hard to install. It runs 2.3.7 iirc, and worked great for me.
Wiki for installing:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S:_Full_Update_Guide
i flashed my phone with another rom but didnt like it so i flashed it back to the value pack 2.3.6 jvu and then rooted it with this http://www.androidauthority.com/root-galaxy-s-gt-i9000-android-2-3-6-xxjvu-48441/
but i cant uninstall all the stock apps with super manager app. last time i flashed it i could do it. but didnt use that guild and cant find it now.
so as its not rooted i cant flash with the one you have mentioned
is jvz better?
I never ran 2.3.6, I went right from a stock update at 2.3.1 (iirc) to the 2.3.7 in CM7. You should just install CWM using Odin, do a full backup using Titanium Backup and a Nandroid backup in CWM. Then flash anything you want to try.
Also, for backing up contacts, I've read not to use Titanium, use an SMS/Contacts Backup... Titanium has worked for me though.
Not bothered about backing my stuff up. only need my contacts there on kies
might try a flash with clocks recovery when i get home.
i like the rom im on but i doont have full root access as i cant delete atock apps like i could before. i need to delete them to change file format to exr4. says i dont have room if i don't delete them
I all ready have cwm so do.i.just download the cm7 zip file and extract it on my internal memory card then reboot into cwm and flash
Oops double post
Flashed it but it runs really really skow looks good tho.
search continues ha ha
Kies still connects to your phone with custom roms and such? I was lucky if it worked with the stock firmwares.
Did you do a full data wipe? CM7 ran pretty quick on my phone. Maybe try SetCPU to speed things up a little.
Titanium with root access can remove stock apps too.
ye i did a full wipe.
i tried clocking it to 1200 and still ran slow.
ICS ran a little slow as well.
flashed a few now with cwm getting quite addictive.
would like to try a few more but mega uploads comes up with some security thing saying its been removed blah blah blah
MegaUpload was shut down a little while ago now. Should be lots of Roms listed in the forums here, with active downloads I would hope.
