[Q] Web Browser settings - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I noticed several third party browsers allow you to set how the browser 'presents' itself to the website, giving you the ability to view the mobile site, or the full version of the site.
Can anyone tell me if this setting exists somewhere in the stock browser? I can't find it, perhaps I'm over looking it somewhere?
Samsung Galaxy S i9000m on 2.2
TIA!

This option doesn't exist in 2.2

You could look for a hacked browser that allows different user agents. Should be able to find some in the developement section via search or going through pages.

Why doesn't the Browser have user/desktop default option?

Google touts: desktop quality page displays...but the stock browser chooses the mobile site version by default! Makes no sense. All other browsers offer the desktop option.
(I know about 'about:debug'.....I'm talking about default.
Thanks
I believe its because on most mobile sites you can find what you are looking for faster then on the desktop version. Either way, I hate when I am directed to the mobile ones and more so now that we have flash (they don't show up on mobile view).
Exactly. Thing is its the 'google-android' browser. You'd think ...at least with Froyo/flash it'd be set at desktop by default.
Don't get it.
It has always had this option. Type about:debug in the address bar, then go to browser settings and at the bottom will be user agent string. Change it to desktop.

And websites going to mobile versions has nothing to do with Google or their browser. The web master of each site is responsible for this, and for not giving you a clickable link to the full version.

I know about that option... I'm talking about having it as a default. That process in addition to bring a pain in the ass...is short lived ...have to keep repeating it.
Well in that case is there any other phone on the market that gives you that option out of the box?

Nokia N900 loads all websites in full desktop view no matter what
What is Google supposed to do about this? The people designing the website are the ones that control how their site looks and if they want to detect what browser you are using and serve you a different design based on it then that's their choice.
I agree that a lot of mobile versions suck, but some are nice. If you want to fake what browser you are using, the debug option is for you.
Many sites have a link at the bottom of the page to load the desktop version. I can't think of any site that I have visited that did not have this option.
I'd just like the option to set desktop in the stock browser settings itself. As in all other browsers....especially with froyo.. I BELIEVE the pre-froyo browser had a settings check use or not use mobile site versions
skyfire browser has a handy button for defining & quickly altering this on it's adress bar.
there's a form of flash on there too, use that.

[Q] Faking Android Model for the Browser?

Hey, I'm trying to fake my Android model version in the browser - the primary reason being that I'm trying to download some games straight from EA's mobile site, and it doesn't give me any download options for the i897 besides The Game of Life. So, if I could fake it as a different Galaxy S model, I'm thinking some other games might show up. Any ways that I might be able to do this?
Seems like a job for build.prop.
Use a user agent switcher on firefox to change the user agent settings to a specific phone (maybe fascinate or vibrant). You can look up on google what some of the user agent settings should be. If you can download the apk this way you can just transfer it to your phone and install it. Never tried downloading from EA but this might work if they're using the browser to check the phone model.

Unfortunately every way I know of changing your user agent on the stock browser causes crashes. Just download dolphin hd browser. It's nice, free and has the option to change the user agent to a desktop computer if you want.

Don't know if it's a user agent thing, but I could certainly try it - I do wish it was easier to switch user agents on the default browser.

Now, non-default browsers can't use Flash, right? Not like I use it, but just curious.
Edit: Well, it looks like User Agent might be part of it, but I can't do any custom user agent strings with Dolphin or Firefox (much less the default browser, where I can't even find the setting even after I put in about:debug), just the default settings it provides.
Sorry I meant to use firefox on your pc to change the user agent so it looks like a mobile browser. The desktop version should have more options available in the extension (and shouldn't crash). I got a gameloft game this way and was able to download the apk, and then transfer it to my phone to install.

Viewing pages as "Desktop" user agent

I have a Sprint tab and since I bought it I have been using Dolphin browser with user agent set to "Desktop".
It's always been my preference with Android devices to view full desktop versions of web sites as opposed to mobile versions.
For some reason (And this has been the case through a firmware update or two) some web sites won't see my tab as a Desktop device. Mainly www.bankofamerica.com but I've found others.
My Samsung fascinate does not have this problem. I'm wondering, does anyone know how I can fix that? I have root access on my tab.
cheers,
Collin
Have you tried this with the Miren browser? This one too had various user agent settings that can be changed on the fly... Check if it has the same behavior with this browser, it might work... Our not...

I use the iPad user agent and it went to the desktop version of the bank site you posted.
Very strange- I followed both of your suggestions. With Miren set to Desktop user agent and with Dolphin set to iPad user agent, I still get the mobile version.

Are you manually entering the desktop URL for the title page of the site?

I don't know what ROM version you are using, but I can tell you that when I got my Tab, I had precisely the same issue and the only way I was able to solve it was to flash to a later ROM.
Regards,
Dave
I use Dolphin HD set to Desktop and just went to that site this morning. No problems, except I forgot my password, lol. Got the desktop site.
Using stock Korean version, no roots, no mods.

+1 same for me.
Is there a way to change the user agent of the built-in web browser, using the stock ROM? I'd rather not have to install and use another web browser such as Dolphin.

[Q] Browser problem

Hi people.
This is my first thread and i have a problem with the stock browser, and many other like dolphin HD, dolphin mini, miren browser, maxthon, etc.
The browser show the webpages like older wap phones.
The problem start when i change my first rom from stock 2.1 and stock kernel to froyoPro later i try gingerDX.
tired of these problem i try to change kernel, i choose nAa v11 and the rom it's miniCM7 2.2 and the problem doesn't solve. It's strange because when i go back to stock kernel and rom the browser works fine.
Please help i know i'm noob but i search to much without an answer
Maybe if u give screenshots of your problem people here will understand what u mean bro..

i dont have any idea what that problem but maybe someone else can help
I'd suggest you to use Opera Mini
The first Website requieres Javascript.
And google MIGHT detect your Phone as a PC, so your Useragent could be messed up.
You can see the Useragent in the Advanced Browser Settings.
I tried all settings which may cause that but I didn't find any could cause that..it just looks like that the pages on the screenshots are not fully loaded..
And try to clear the data or reset the browser into default and see if it works..Or try other network provider first..

The pages are fully loaded, and i don't know what happen.
You seem to be behind a proxy that optimizes the pages for you.
If that's the case try to access web pages from another network.
On Dolphin you can go into Settings and Change what websites will see you as (PC, iPhone, iPad, Android).
Choose Android, and see what happens. If nothing changes, try iPhone.

In your APN, go to bam.entelpcs.cl and delete the Proxy settings

Browser logging off websites

The android browser does not keep me logged in. Whenever i close the browser, it logs off sites I was logged into and so very annoying. I have had this problem since I did the software update throught the settings. The Firefox or other browsers don't give this problem. But i find the android browser simpler and better to use. How do I fix it? I obviously tried clearing cache and passwords and all the options in there.
I'm using a galaxy tab 8.9''.
Before you created a new thread, did you read around?
if you did, you will realise everyone is talking about original galaxy tab P1000 and its variant.
your device has its own forum.
