I'm currently on CM7/MIUI and wanna go back to root waiting for CM7 more mature.
I wanna a stock and samsung supported ROM (not leaked), and can receive OTA as welll
Can I just use Kies or I have to download a ROM and flash using Odin.
I would go back to a stock gingerbread rom(must have bootloaders as CM7 uses froyo bootloaders) or go to gingerbread ezbase. From there you could use the Kies registry patch to spoof it into updating your phone to the latest for your region.
I can't find any guide to spoof Kies, some say it does not work with Kies 2.0
Stockrom for here:
http://samfirmware.com/
Click: Toolbox -> Firmware -> FW Android
Then root it again using Speedmod or similar:
This is not really solved because what I want is the ability to update via Kies, but I gave up and just do the upgrade myself . Thanks for you comment

flash the JH2 rom linked in that thread using odin, you can then upgrade to the latest stock rom using kies or whatever other method you want.
Let's say I installed Ultimate ROM v8.2 on my SGS. Can I still upgrade to the official Gingerbread once Samsung released it thru Kies?
Most likely not. Kies will check to see if you have the stock rom, modem and CSC for your provider (not kernel, however)...if not, it will say you can't be upgraded.
Therefore, revert to stock once you KNOW the update is available, or take a nandroid backup of your stock rom before flashing Ultimate.
Or forget Kies and just download a stock 2.3.3 rom from XDA, flash it, then install one of the rising crop of Gingerbread ROMs available here.
Thanks for the prompt response rschenck.
Cant update your through kies but it will be released on samfirmware.com so you will be able to flash via odin

You need to use the spoof Kies thread method if that still works .
If you have backed up your original firmware you can reinstall that .
Or just wait for a full working 2.3 with all the add on in rom kitchin and flash that .

I'm using DocRom 2.2 now and I want to update to stock 2.3, but Kies wont let me do it.
It basically says that the current version cannot be updated.
Do I have to flash a stock rom first and then update through Kies?
If so, where do I get a stock rom (swedish)?
if have a js8 room, you can update 2.3.3 jvh rom.
pls remove your kies program from pc. and visit samsung official website... download update version of it... install it on pc... restart your pc... and connect phone to kies with origianl samsung original usb cabl. and write us that what do your kies says? your rom is very old... you can update 2.3.3 step by step 2.2.1 to 2.3.3
Try this procedure : Galaxy S Android 2.3 update using Kies
I want to restore my SGS to stock firmware, so it works with Kies etc, as if I've not installed custom roms on it.
Which is the best route to go with this (e.g. which firmware version), preferably Froyo or Eclair.
Thanks!
Use Odin and install one of the Stock, or stock deodexed ROMs. Or if you want to revert back to original Vodafone ROM then check http://www.samfirmware.com to see if they have it. All stock firmware should work with Kies. Out of curiosity, why do you need Kies ? I never use it.

You can use Check Fus Downloader to download lots of stock roms. It depends on what country and carrier.

JPY did the trick, was correctly recognised by Kies and offered me the Gingerbread upgrade

The reason I wanted to install an earlier firmware was just to ensure the phone was correctly identified by Kies, and the Kies firmware update process would complete ok.
I'm probably going to sell the phone, hence need to make sure it's in "factory" working order.
Well from factory, all eu uk sgs phones will be shipping with jvo...

My phone was running a custom rom yesterday. Flashed froyo jpy when I had issues yesterday. connected it to kies and it gave me gingerbread jvo. No spoofs. It just worked. Now back on simply honey but at least I have a route out now!
How about an asian ROM that works with Kies Firmware Update?
I Flashed back to DXJF4 to try to update my firmware to at least DXJPA via Kies but the Update button is greyed out.
Iam from Germany and iam using the german Kies! But i have installed trough spooffw and UK Version of GIngerbread 2.3.3 because in Germany the GIngerbread Update trough Kies wsa not available. But today it started i saw in the internet. So i need to get back to Stock german Froyo so that the german Kies indentify it and update it but which is this stock german Froyo 2.2 Rom?
Thank your very much for you considerations
Flash back to your stock Eclair 2.1 (Choose the right file depending on your region go to this website samfirware.com), and then upgrade via Kies.
Ok i will test it hopefully i get the right Rom from samfirmware.com
Rooting Gingerbread on my SGS
Hello folks,
first of all I really appreciate the work you put in here to satisfy the community with all the helpful apps and stuff. TY!
Well, it came to the point that I used Kies to update my Germanish SGS i9000 (O²) and the only thing I miss now is the root access to get rid of some really unwanted and memory eating apps.
I used SuperOneClick on Froyo and earlier versions which worked great but seems this is not working on 2.3.3 anymore. Well, I was reading the guide on how to install this CF Kernel but I got scared because others seems to have some reboot issues after doing so. I have to admit that I really don't have much clue about all the Odin pushes and Kernel stuff, and the more I try to understand, the more I get confused (I might blame it only on my age tho^^).
Is there anyone out here that could just guide me to the right CF download for my SGS? That would really help me alot.
Another question would be, after changing the Kernel, can this mess up upgrading to a newer firmware in the future? Do I have to install the original kernel before?
Model: GT-I9000
Firmware: 2.3.3
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9000XWJVI-CL210427
I downloaded an Eclair Rom from Samfirmware.com but i cant flash it on my sgs i9000 so i decided to flash an Gingerbread 2.3.3 JVO from samfirmware. IS that an official Gingerbread or an customized?
If you want to root under Gingerbread you need to flash another Kernel e.g from Supercurio. Get ODin 1.3 and search in development section for an Kernel and flash it then you ahev superuser rights
