Chainfire 3D help [CM7-SD] - Nook Color General

I'm running on an SD version of CM7 N115.
Used Verygreen's size agnostic to get it loaded on there.
The problem is, I can not install chainfire drivers because /system is not writeable(RW). I was able to install this previously on a dual-boot SD card with phiremod on it.
What I've tried
ES file explorer change permissions- Result: Denied
ES file explorer root options- mount system as writeable option- Result "failed to mount"
Was gonna try the ADB method but my device isn't even recognized when I start it up.
Anyone think they could lead me in the right direction?

I figured it out. Anyone else having trouble mounting partitions or making /system rw to install these drivers this is what I did.
1. Open up terminal emulator on your nook
2. type su and enter. type "bash" without the quotes.
3. then type mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblk3 /system
I was able to install the drivers after this.

Or you can install the latest Busybox using the Busybox Installer app with the blue arrow on the icon. The other one with the gears in the icon doesn't work for me.

I tried this fix with a friends nook who had the same problem, but it did not work. Still had to use the terminal emulator to get it mounted and installed.

You will have to provide more information. Like if your running off SD, what version of CM7 your running...etc.

[Q] installing .apk files

trying to install the DSPmanager apk i got here.
i've tried in ADB, and it gives an invalid install location error, tried in OI file manager and it gives me a big, happy green arrow and says "application not installed"
running GinSense 0.9
any help would be appreciated.
(sorry if this is the wrong thread)
(and i did search and will continue to do so until/unless i hear back)
EDIT to say - also tried app installer - same happy arrow and not installed as OI manager.
Most likely on your default install location there is no more space left to install the application. You can try to modify that by
Code:
adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2
from your PC having connected your phone in debugging mode.
The different locations are described in more details in this post.
i managed to get it installed with
Code:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cp /sdcard/DSPManager.apk /system/app
i don't understand why neither of my app installers were doing this, but i'm new to this, so maybe i'm missing something. that link looks like some useful info, though. thanks!
Ok, in that way you installed DSPManager on your /system partition. Generally this is read only and there is no space left. Applications normally will be installed on /data, /sdcard or (if supported by to ROM) on /sd-ext.

i'm running ginsense with S2E, so i assume normally would be on sd-ext.
i tried both using the install feature and just manually placing the .apk in /sd-ext to no avail. i also tried placing it in /data with no luck.
what are the practical differences with putting it in /system? FWIW, it's running fine with it there (both the rom and the app)
i don't know if it makes a difference, but the app is DSP manager
i removed it from /system/app then used ADB shell. i *think* i figured out what i was doing wrong, the command line wanted me to specify an install location, which i wasn't doing. is this a "cleaner" install method?
Code:
adb shell
install /sdcard/DSPManager.apk /sd-ext/app
app shows up in the launcher again.
Typically just doing an
adb install /locationofapkonyourcomputer
Click to collapse
will do the trick. You don't need to copy the .apk onto your phone just to install it.
As mentioned previously, it may be that your default install location is NOT set to /sd-ext/app and that /data is full.

ATTENTION: wifi modules path was changed in cm-9-0419

In the latest cm9 nightly build - update-cm-9-20120419-NIGHTLY, my wifi is not work with my own kernel.
So, I checked the catalog, and found this: wifi modules was changed.
http://review.cyanogenmod.com/#/c/14910/1/BoardConfigCommon.mk
old path: /system/modules/bcm4329.ko
new path: /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko
It will cause your wifi not work with custom kernel.
If your wifi is not work, just make a symbol link, type these command in the terminal:
su
mount -o remount,rw /system
ln -s /system/modules/bcm4329.ko /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko
#Thanks Paragon_X, I forgot to tell you to remount /.
mount -o remount,ro /system
Or, you are the kernel developer, your should put your kernel modules in both path, or link them.
Thanks
I confirm this change as well and the fix worked.
I have the wifi authentication problem. Do I flash the download link from the link you posted?

Okay thanks so regarding the command written... is there spaces in there or am I seeing things?
ln -s /system/modules/bcm4329.ko /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko
I'm not familiar with typing in superuser so I have to ask
There are spaces.
If you are unfamiliar with the spaces, then you will be unfamiliar with the before and after commands around that command too:
mount -o remount,rw /system
and
mount -o remount,ro /system
Thanks for the fix!

Thanks that will be handy for surprised users, if CM actually thought things through, they would link the dirs to allow a transition time where kernels work with modules in old location and new location.

Hi,im kinda really noob at this stuff atm but do we type this in command prompt or terminal emulator (or any other program like that). And can someone confirm the code is:
su
mount -o remount,rw /system
ln -s /system/modules/bcm4329.ko /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko
#Thanks Paragon_X, I forgot to tell you to remount /.
mount -o remount,ro /system
the "fix" is included in the latest trinity kernels. wifi works with the newest cm9(nightlies and kangs), older cm9, and every other rom.

Im using matrix kernel v19 cfs and the latest CM9 v7. Trying to get the wifi working now and its hard.
Heres what i have done using terminal emulator
Typed in "su". Pressed enter. I granted super user permissions.
Typed in "mount -o remount,rw /system" . Pressed enter. Didnt say anything
Typed in "ln -s /system/modules/bcm4329.ko /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko". Pressed Enter
It showed up "link failed File exists"
now its changed to "255|[email protected]:/". Before it was "[email protected]:/"
I than typed in "mount -o remount,ro /system"
My wifi still doesnt work
I'll reply here to. The reason you can not link (ln) is that there is a file where you are trying to add a "shortcut" just remove the bcm*.ko file in /system/lib/modules and copy the module from /system/modules there. I used root explorer then it's just cut and paste

I still have no luck. Is the error everyone getting the authentication problem? and simply wifi indicator wont popup?
For all the people who dont get this too well, especielly me. Could an experienced, someone who knows this, write out the complete instructions and codes to do it. Preferably in detail because some of us have no idea what we are suppose to do. And suggest what type of programs we should be using. thanks in advance.
Ok. Let's take it from the start. When android boots it loads the kernel to handle all the drivers and inner workings of the OS. It also loads modules, that's optional drivers loaded on demand. Now CM9, used to load it's modules from /system/modules but has changed it's location to /system/lib/modules. This is new to the people making custom kernels which kernel installs it's modules in the wrong place. This makes the new kernel try to load the old module but fails because of different kernel source versions. Now, our task is to move the new module in /system/modules to /system/lib/modules overwriting the old one.
Start a terminal.
Type su and enter to become superuser which is the only user with rights to change system files.
Now if there is a box asking you to allow this, press allow.
Now type:
mount -o remount, rw /system
This will make the system folder and child folders writable.
type:
rm /system/lib/modules/bcm*
That will remove the old module.
Type:
cp /system/modules/bcm* /system/lib/modules
Reboot and it should work.

BusyBox problem: installed twice, removed one, damaged system

Hello guys, please help me out with this problem! I've been working on all day but my phone is still bad...
When I rooted my device BusyBox was supposedly installed by the toolkit I used to root (mskip's).
Then I installed BusyBox installer market app (Stericson's) and it said "BusyBox location could not be found". I thought it wasn't installed so I used the "smart install" with the default values, so it was installed to /system/bin and all the applets were listed as symlinked to /system/bin/busybox
After a while I realized that it was installed both in /system/xbin (by the root toolkit) and in /system/bin (by busybox installer). I used the uninstall option from the busybox installer app to remove it from /system/bin again and leave just one installation to avoid conflicts. This was not a good idea it seems. After uninstalling and rebooting, the phone started to work incorrectly, wifi doesn't work.. and most importantly, USB connection is dead with Android fully booted. the battery charges but the PC doesn't detect it. (It works on Recovery mode though).
I have an idea of what may be wrong. I think the "BusyBox installer" changed all the symlinks to system/bin/busybox, so when it was uninstalled, the phone was left without any of the applets of busybox even though the file /system/xbin/busybox is still present.
Or maybe I'm not really rooted anymore? However, the su binary is still present in /system/xbin/su but I still can't get to work commands like "mount".
How can I fix this problem? I will greatly appreciate any suggestions.
I think it might be fixed by installing busybox to /system/bin or even just copying the /system/xbin/busybox file to /system/xbin/busybox but because the phone is not working correctly I haven't been able to do that...
Here's the information I've gathered so far for you guys to PLEASE help me out with this:
SuperSU is installed and seems to works fine.
"BusyBox Free" installer app doesn't work. If I open it, it shows only black with the three buttons in the bottom but they can't be "clicked. It has been granted root permissions.
"ES File Explorer" gets root permissions but is unable to mount /system as writable (to copy the file).
In a terminal emulator application (Jack Palevich's), this is what I get:
Code:
$ which busybox
/system/xbin/busybox
$ ls
ls: not found
$ busybox ls
(works, outputs the directory content correctly)
$ mount -o remount,rw /system
mount: not found
$ busybox mount -o remount,rw /system
mount: permission denied (are you root?)
$ su
(the terminal emulator app has root permission, but when issuing "su" command, the cursor stays inactive for several minutes and when it finally responds, the following operations are still not succesful. The "su" doesn't seem to work.
$ busybox mount -o remount,rw /system
mount: permission denied (are you root?)
$ /system/bin/busybox --install -s /system/bin
busybox: /system/bin/zcat: Read-only file system
busybox: /system/bin/mountpoint: Read-only file system
busybox: /system/bin/nohup: Read-only file system
My plan is to make the USB work so I can use the toolkit again to restore a stock firmware and clean this mess. Oh, I have stock recovery and stock boot image if that's of any help to know it.
How can I issue the commands I need? or fix this problem?
I have basic linux experience so if you need the output of any command please let me know.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you!
... i think that flashing cwm recovery(.tar.md5) with odin and flashing a root+busybox.zip with cwm recovery should be the fastes way to fix this .... only thing is that it erease your "costum binary count" but with the "Triangel Away" app you can reset that counter ...
Thank you for the hint, enox. I'm will try to install the custom recovery now.
Thanks again enox for pointing me in the right direction. The phone is working again. I'm sharing what I did in case it helps someone in the future:
1) Installed the custom recovery 'twrp', provided by the toolkit (program_folder/recovery/recovery-twrp-2.4.3.0-GTI8190.tar) using odin with the phone in download mode.
2) Flashed this busybox uninstaller using twrp recovery. The phone wasn't working fine yet, so I continued to the following step.
3) Flashed a root+busybox.zip provided by the toolkit (program_folder/root/SuperSU-1.25-Busybox-RenameRecoveryRestore.zip) using twrp recovery.
At this point, the phone was working fine but to be sure that all symlinks were correct, I ran an additional cleaning script which you can find at the end of this post, along with my comments talking to myself while I was troubleshooting the problem.
I'll go to sleep now. Thank you.
Got a PM and I thought it would be better if I reply to it in the forum so others can benefit as well:

[Q] Lost Root After Jelly Bean OTA Update

Ok, I don't think I'm the only one out there that lost root after the JB OTA update today... Anybody else? I was using Voodoo OTA RootKeeper and everything.... Crap... Any news on an exploit yet?
Lost root too. Rootkeeper didn't do it's job. Now just waiting for a solution.
Not sure how useful but someone on the main JB update thread mentioned they were able to restore with a few adb commands. Apparently for some OTA keeps root but doesn't reinstall it correctly with the button and a few adb's will regain it. FWIW.
Odd, mine kept root without an issue. I'm curious why it's different for some.
Mine kept it but I did the full download and booted to stock recovery and did flash update.zip. then restored root

have you try the razr-blade exploit?
Updated SU with stock ICS, installed Voodoo, backed up root, flashed JB and restored root. I have SU and voodoo says successful but superuser is not working. Tried, razr-blade, and MotoChopper, both a no-go.
I used Voodoo, Updated to JB, and re-rooted unsuccessfully. I've even tried to go in and restore Su manually and change it's permissions but nothing seems to be working. :/
I lost root, but you can bring it back! NOTE: This will ONLY work if you backed up root with Voodoo OTA RootKeeper prior to updating to Jelly Bean!!!
Make sure you have android debugging enabled and mount it as a media device.
Follow these instructions: (copied from another site)
1) Download the unsure su from here and put it somewhere on your C Drive. It will be used in the following push step (Assuming windows) (This is a WIDE OPEN su without any controls). (sparky root i believe?)
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/jcpilpgoeta516e/tCB-Ep-3YQ
2) start a CMD window and logon to adb (type "adb shell" without the quotes to log on)
3) su -
4) verify you have root:
id
uid=0(root) gid=0(root)........
If you don't you can try these instead of 'su':
"/system/su-backup" or "/system/su_backup"
5) remount system as RW:
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /system
6) make a backup of current su just in case in adb
cat /system/bin/su > /system/bin/su1
7) open a new CMD window and push the su binary from step 1 to the sdcard using the path from where ever you put it.
adb push c:\<some path>\su /sdcard/
8) Then copy it to /system/bin from the adb session where you su'd.
cat /sdcard/su > /system/bin/su
9) Change permissions for SU
chmod 6755 /system/bin/su
10) download superuser (NOT SUPERSU) from play store if you do not have it already.
11) have superuser upgrade the su binary. It may fail to remount system as RO. Just rerun the update in superuser and it will work the 2nd time. You don't need to remount system as RO manually since superuser update of SU will do that for you.
12) congrats. your now rerooted.
13) remove the backup after you know your OKAY.
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /system
rm /system/bin/su1
mount -o remount,ro /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /system
Hope this helps you guys!

Edited: or use script manager from the play store. Under advanced options you can mount the system as r/w or r/o.
