can't convert /cache to ext4 - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've tried numerous times to convert but it keeps saying "not enough space" when chainfire's ext4 add-on gets to /cache. The others were converted without any problems.
I currently use damians ginger kernel 2.2 beta 1.
As a workaround, I just tried to flash the latest speedmod to convert in cwm but this kernel caused a bootloop...

Do this things in Recovery mode:
- wipe cache
- wipe dalvik cache
- fix permissions
And if this does not work, I'd flash the ROM again with Odin, but this time with PIT-file (512) + Re-Partition ticked.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App

Yes, I've tried to wipe cache and dalvik cache before. It did not work
In order to start the ext4 add-on, the phone has to be rebooted. Therefore, I guess cache and dalvik-cache get filled again...
I will, however, try again!
EDIT: didn't work! Seems that I will have to live without ext4 on /cache till I flash a JVQ rom...

[Q] Back from Cyanogen 6 to Froyo, camera problems

Hi,
First I installed Cyanogen6 to try it. After few days I decide to go back to Froyo again. Now I can't use the camera on froyo. When I try to open it, the screen goes black. How can I reset to the original state and delete everything related to Cyanogen? I made hard reset with no luck. For example, SuperUser APK is still installed after the hard reset... so I suppose Cyanogen stuff are also still on my phone.
someone can help me?
Sorry for my bad english
I made these wipes:
Wipe data/factory reset :: Wipe /data and /cache
Wipe cache : Wipe /cache only
Wipe Dalvik-cache :: Wipe /cache/dalvik-cache , /data/dalvik-cache , /sd-ext/dalvik-cache if present
Wipe SD:ext partition : Wipe the ext partition on your sdcard
Wipe battery stats : Wipe the battery stats in /data
Wipe rotate settings : Wipe the sensor settings in /data
You have to flash a stock image, or if you were smart, NAND restore to before you flashed CM.
I flashed a stock image but I don't have a NAND backup.
Was it a proper stock image, or a repacked one? Might explain the SU app.
I download and installed the following update.zip:
8d1049f5d550.OTA_Passion_Vodafone_Generic_2.15.151.5_R_FRF91-1.13.1700.1_EPF21B_release_signed.zip
Downloaded from android.clients.google. com / packages/ ota
Is it a stock image or a repacked one? What should I flash?
If cyanogen6 write something to /system, Did it get deleted with a wipe? This could be the problem. How can I clean all the storage and revert it to the initial state?
/system isn't touched with a wipe, but it's overwritten when you flash.
I will flash the system.img from FRF91. This should solve my problem.
Indeed it should.
I got the same problem with the camera in cyanogen 6. And now i can't install any Rom because E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (bad)
Sounds like a bad download. Download CM7 and compare the checksum. Then try again.

How come I cannot wipe clean my Note?

After I installed the Safe Kernel Hydracore and Reboot to recovery (vol.up+home+power button) I select wipe data/factory reset & wipe cache partition and even go into Advanced and did the wipe Dalvik cache and after I installed the latest Cyanomod 10 and Gapps and reboot the phone, I still have my old folders like before with maps, games, etc...
When I looked in my Main Storage of my Note (/storage/sdcard0), I only have 3.5 GB free. And like I said, I can still see my old games, apps and maps folders in my main storage which took up a lot of space and I only have 3.5 GB free. Do I have to manually delete every folder in the main storage and go back to recovery and do everything over? Could this brick my phone?
How can I completely wipe everything in my main storage?

Wipe in cwmr does not clear internal storage, for that you need to format internal SD. Once on safe kernel you can easily format sd and there is no risk in it. Just format it in settings/storage but make sure to move required files to external sd (like pics or music)
Sent from my GT-N7000
Does it suppose to format your internal sdcard? The answer is NO. Format it by going to settings/storage/format internal memory.
Cheers!!!
Fired From My FireDevice.
Alternatively, as I find even a format of sd sometimes does not do a proper wipe, connect phone to pc as usb, then manually delete all files on SD.

Think you are all wrong guys.
He wants a factory reset, not manualy delete folders and files.
There are a lot other stuff that remains on the Note, registry, hidden files...etc.
There is only one simple way to do that.
Because all "new" kernel have the option to format emmc disabled, remember the Note brick times.
Flash the Abyss 4.2 kernel, restart in recovery, do factory reset ( it works ) and full wipe, flash an safe ICS kernel or flash the whole new ROM of your choice.
You are done.
Remeber to restart in RECOVERY afte flashing the Abyss 4.2 kernel for factory reset.
The other, difficult, way is to flash a rootable GB ROM with PC Odin, root your Note an after that, you have a clean, almost virgin, Note for flashing the newest ROM of your choice.
I think the first two guys answered correctly.

Factory reset = format internal SD with safe kernel??
Factory reset only formats system, so doesn't touch internal sd card at all..... Fact.

Ergo => formating internal SD doesnt touch the system => doesnt do "Factory reset"?
Right?
Factory reset with "unsafe" GB kernel format system AND internal SD.
After that you can manually mount system and format it, also all other system partitions, from unsafe kernel.
But after formating system, data, dalvik and all other system relevant partitions from any "safe" kernel you will find all your data, passwords, old programm entrys untouched.
Fact!!!
Ever installed again your navi software after doing full wipe and manually formating all system partitions from safe kernel?
After reboot there is nothing, but install your Navigon and it will find asap all your maps, account and everything else.
All the data are present and this is NOT Factory reset.
There is not problem WHAT does "Factory reset" and "format system" but it is VERY, VERY, VERY important from what KERNEL you do this.
Safe or unsafe GB kernel.
And again, deleting all data from the phone is only possible with unsafe kernel or flashing original Samsung firmware.
And this guy above did a full wipe with safe kernel and finds all his data untouched.
And again: a clean Note is only possible with unsafe GB kernel or original Samsung firmware.
Formating system from a safe kernel is NOT enough for a clean phone.

You're talking bonkers mate. A factory reset only resets the system partition. It does not include internal sd card Nov matter what kernel you're on. You have to specify a separate operation of wipe internal sd card for that. Kernel type doesn't make a difference.

[Q] Internal NAND is dead? Can't format data partition. Freeze and restart into CWM

Hi!
I have a little problem with my SGS. I used from a month CM 10.1 ROM and Semaphore 2.9.3 kernel. Today phone start up and after a few minutes restart into recovery. I tried reinstall ROM, recover backup etc but has no effects. I tried also flash Samsung JVP ROM (3 files, with re-partition) but phone restart like boot loop problem.... After all that i tried wipe all data/factory reset, format every partition. No errors shows in CWM but all data still are on partition data :/
Summary i can't format/erase data from partition:
data,
cache,
datadata,
sdcard (internal)
In CWM all partition format show results "Done" but data still are there.
But I can flash new system into system or new kernel into boot partition.
Any idea without NAND is dead ?
got pic on error? maybe dbdata
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Ok...
Actually a I have lastest CM 10.1 and Semaphore kernel 3.0.0
When I tired CWM/Mounts and Starage Menu/format /data
See first attachment
After I go to CWM/advanced/show log:
See second attachment
And data on partition /data are still there...
Hi,
could the warning in the second screenshot be the Problem????
Okay it's only a warning not an error...but maybe that is the prob...
I searched about this warring "Wipe via secure discard failed, used discard" but I not found anything useful.
That's Bad :crying:
Another idea: Flashing back to an older Version of CWM-Recovery and then testing if data partition can be cleaned up...
Another question is : what means the Option "Wipe via secure discard"??? what is the effect, anyone knows???

I tried that method clean up, factory reset/format with stock JPU and CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVP-v3.7-CWM3RFS, but no effects
I tried also with another Samsung ROM 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3...

Formating /system

Just wanted to know what happens when you format /system and /preload partitions.
Suppose you format /system from recovery. Can you boot into you ROM after that? Or is that where the ROM was?

If you format /system in recovery you blow away the ROM, definitely cannot boot after that. If you format /data as well, the only way you'll be able to recover is with an ADB sideload.

Thanks.
What if I format /system + /data + cache and dalvik chache and then flash a custom rom right after that, without rebooting the phone in any way [meaning not rebooting into system or bootloader or recovery] that should be ok right? Coz I came from a S3 and that combination worked perfectly for it.
Also still have no idea what the /preload partition and formatting it does.
That's what I do when I update within a rom.
Wipe system, cache, dalvik. Flash rom, then wipe cache/dalvik again.
Just a habit after all the different recommendations from previous devs in the past.

Yes you can wipe /system, /data and /cache and you're good to flash a ROM, no need to reboot back into recovery again. Dalvik-cache is located on /data, so no need to wipe dalvik when you're wiping data, it's redundant. There is no need to worry about wiping or formatting /preload in almost all situations, otherwise the ROM devs would be telling us to do it. Back in my Galaxy s3 days I remember some ROMs would wipe and flash /preload but I don't think it's a big deal on the One. If it needs to be done, the ROM installation script will handle it.
Most ROM installation scripts wipe /system so it usually isn't necessary to do it yourself. However I do it anyway just to insure a completely clean installation in case the dev's script is messed up (it does happen). Wiping /data is optional of course but it is recommended when changing the base version (for example, 4.1.2 to 4.2.2) or if you're anal like me you can wipe data when upgrading between HTC base versions (2.17 to 2.24 for instance). Some people don't ever wipe /data and don't have any problems, but I can guarantee many of the weird odd-ball issues on this forum could have been prevented with a full wipe.

[Q]Wiped clean to install rom, now can't access sdcard

Hello.
first I want to apologize for my, sometimes, bad English!
Second, i want to apologize for my novice touch in this topic!
The story:
I've been using SweetRom for a while, but tonight i wanted to try another rom.
I loaded up SuperBean(not really relevant to this story) on a microSD.
Rebooted my phone into recovery
Philz Touch 5
I choose "Wipe Data/Factory Reset" and then "Clean to install a new rom"
Then i tried to "install zip"
"Choose zip from sdcard"
But then i get: E:Can't Mount /sdcard/
I've tried to format the sdcard, exfat, fat, fat32, ntsf but nothing worked, still the same error.
I can access the internal storage and i can boot into download.
I thought that maybe i'll try to install the newest Philz but when in download mode
my computer wont recognize my phone (i'm using Windows 8)
i'm stuck! please help me out!
I've searched everywhere for answers but i can't find any!
What are my options?
Boot into Philz recovery again and go to mounts and storage and mount USB. Then connect it to pc. Check if the any drive shows up. Then move the new rom to the internal storage.

is /preload equivalent to /dalvik-cache? but then what's the point of format /data/factory restore if "clean to install new rom" is present?
No. It's different. Preload is a separate partition and dalvik-cache is in data partition.
The option you mentioned only exists in Philz recovery not in standard cwms

So, to be clear, is it necessary or advisable to do any of 'Wipe Data/Factory Reset', 'Wipe Cache Partition' and 'Wipe Dalvik Cache'? Or is 'Clean to Install a New ROM' merely an amalgam of the above (plus added formats?)?
Thanks
It's usually not necessary but it is ALWAYS advised to format /data /preload /system and cache before flashing a new ROM. If you don't do those wipes then you can sometimes end in a bootloop, random force closes, battery and performance issues et cetera. Basically if yoou want to flash a new ROM (unless it is an update to your current ROM) then always do a full wipe,
If you are just updating your ROM (ex. updating one nightly to another) then you just have to flash the ROM in recovery and wipe cache, dalvik cache (in advanced)
.

Thanks very much for that - much appreciated.
I've read elsewhere that many seem to recommend wiping cache and dalvik after they've flashed a ROM? Is this something you'd advise and, if so, why (or not!)?
Many thanks

If you're updating then yes, it's enough that you flash the ROM and then wipe cache and dalvik cache.
If you're reflashing from start then you should first do a full wipe, flash the ROM, gapps, su and that is all. No need to wipe the cache or dalvik cache again

Ah right. So if you're flashing a new ROM - then clean install is all that's necessary. If upgrading to a newer version of existing ROM, then it's better to wipe cache and dalvik post-install? Why? What does it do and how does it help?
Cheers
reset before installing zip, now no super su ... cannot mount usb
Hi,
The title says it all. I have been reading and searching. Many similar stories. I apologise if this is in the wrong place but this is very similar to my problem.
I have a galaxy i9505 trying to install a DjeMBeY ROM from TWRP.
I factory reset and wiped cache's BEFORE I flashed the .zip file so then had no .zip file to flash!
Also have erased my system backup and the USB WILL NOT SEEM TO MOUNT to copy it back onto the card.
I have read and read I am very struck.
I am not familiar with all the processes yet. Please help.
i recommend going to here

You can go with the download mode and install a stock ROM or use the 'adb sideload " feature of cwm recovery to install the zip of your ROM if you have it saved on your PC.
