I want to check if my data and system partitions are ext3 or ext4. Is there a way to do this ?
Easy, just use a terminal/ADB to run the command 'mount'
cheers for that. it seems that if you run the backtoext3 script and then do a nand restore it converts your data back/system to ext4 .
Correct, it's smart like that.
Thanks, was wondering the same thing. I can see that my data and system are ext4 but cache is ext3. Is that ok, shouldn't they all be the same partition?

I think I did it correctly, got a lot of text, like 2 screens there was 4 that found ext3 in, /system, /cache, /data, /lgdrm. So I guess the cm7 rc1 im running is using ext3 then? Why isnt cm7 using ext4?

Because once you go EXT4, the only way back to EXT3 involves your data going bye-bye. I believe it was almost done, but RC changed his mind.
was a way to extract files from a nand back so I could push them to my device
Mount the .img on a Linux machine.

I recently switched to Buffed 2.1.2 which requires an ext4 partition if you want run a2sd. I partitioned my class 6 sdcard to ext4 in the following way.
1.Rebooted into recovery
2.Partitioned sdcard fat32
3. 32mb swap
4. 512mb partition
5. Upgrade ext2 to ext3
6. Then upgrade ext3 to ext4
Now my question is: Is this the correct way to partition to ext4? I'm assuming you need to upgrade specifically in this order? Or can you just skip upgrading from ext2 to ext3 and go right to the last step?
That's right. It's included in the original procedure here:

when we partition our sd card to ext in cwm recovery is that ext2 or 3/4? if i use gparted insted of recovery to partition to ext4 is that ok?
Cwm does an ext3 partition, if ur using DTa2sd..it can be converted to ext4 by
su
a2sd convert-ext4

Yes, it is perfectly fine if you make one with gparted or mini tools... make sure you run this command in terminal before flashing a2sd...
mount | grep sd-ext
thanks to both
what mount | grep sd-ext exactly do?
aso my gparted already see my sdext partition ext4 if i partitioned it from recovery is that possible or an error?
That command checks if there exists an sd ext partition.
I don't know abt gparted but cwm formats the card and partitions it so it should not be a prob
I used minitools for partitioning
u can go for ext4 no harm in tht
if ur using mini tool make sure u keep all partitions as primary
also ext2/3/4 wont b detected on windows so dont panic if u dont see the partitions once done they r thr meant for ur phone nt windows
Without a2sd what is the exact command to convert partition to ext4 ? It can be very useful

yeah, but "problem" is after a restore. If we convert partition in ext4 after restore, all data already in partition remain on ext3, only new data will be on ext4.
So it will be good that cwm could format always sdext in ext4
Okay, a question from me...
I have a galaxy fit s5670, running a custom rom that came with darktremor a2sd pre-installed...
I created a partition of 1024mb on my 16gb card, and have enabled swap...but the apps that I install are still going in the phone memory...
Can you please help me out???
Our devices are SIMILAR...

I have installed link2sd, which seems to be working fine...
When it asked me what partition type did I have, ext3 and 4 gave me a 'partition not found' error...
Ext2 is working fine...

I believe that you are taking about the cache that will use your internal memory even if you have a2sd enabled. THough it is not recommended to do so unless needed (i.e. your memory is very low) you can move dalvik cache to sd-ext from APP2SDGUI app or though this simple command
su
a2sd cachesd
It will move dalvik cache to sd-ext.

Don't try anything eles.... Just install darktremor as said here http://yagyagaire.blogspot.com/2011/09/how-to-partition-sd-card-and-install.html
If possible format your sd-ext before installing darktermor app2sd. THen all you need to so is move dalvik to sd-ext as said above. And your internal memory will be totally empty. You can explorer /sd-ext/ folder using root explorer to see if a2sd is working properly.
After using link2sd for a day, I find that it is working, and it even allows u to specify which apps to move, and what all to move...
I did partition before using a2sd, and I understand the thing about the dalvik cache (moving which would make my device slower)...
Anyways, thanks for replying...

Hi guys! I had converted my phone to ext4 and now i wanted to convert it back to rfs because i wanted to flah a new rom and it gave a sort of a format i mean i see the icons, kinda, of the appa i had but it says that the app isn't installed on my phone and no accounts or anything else... Help?
PS: And in ext4 app i have the the option to convert to ext4 and to rfs... Wtf? and when i want to use it to check the integrity of the system it goes to recovery and reboots
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
did you convert fs in recovery?
Slow down. How did you convert it into ext 4 in the first place? If you converted it in recovery using a custom kernel, you should already know how to convert it back into RFS.
I used the ext4 conversion app from chainfire so yes i went into recovery. To convert to ext4 i pressed convert to ext4 went into recovery and for restore i pressed the efs option went into recovery started converting and when i pixked up the phone i saw CWM recovery so i hit reboot. Now i don't know if my system is efs or ext4 since both options are "active" in chainfire's app and when i hit check integriti it goes to recovery starts something and then reboots...
Damn it's hard to type on your phone... since pc is down so sorry for misspels

I've been playing around with the CM-mod/S7 and can sucessfully make it boot with all ext4 partitions.
Backround information:
Parititions and formatting
Partitions are the basic unit of storage on my devices with storage (think C: D: E: if you use windows)
The standard layout of android devices:
A /cache partition
A /data partition
A /system partition
Other hidden partitions (this part isnt relevent to us)
The common filesystem formats for recent android devices are EXT 3 and 4 (4 being the newer obviously)
The S7's default partitions:
stock 3xx: (ie froyo)
/cache: ext3(?)
/data: ext3(?)
/system: ext2
stock 5xx: (ie honeycomb)
/cache: ext3
/data: ext3
/system: ext4
my ext4 mod:
/cache: ext4
/data: ext4
/system: ext4
All other devices that launched with HC installed use all ext4 partitions.
But the S7 didnt launch with HC, it launched with froyo.
Dell couldnt upgrade /data to ext4 without wiping user data.
They could upgrade system, since they wipe it on install anyway.
Cache they didnt for the outside chance a user had actual important data in it.
My proposal
What I propose is a modified version of CM9-mod with /cache and /data formatted as ext4 partitions.
I've already got a working version, the main issue is that:
I dont know what the difference is. I've ran quadrant with ext4 and again with ext4, and there's very little difference.
Since quadrant has an I/O and database benchmark (and they run on /data), at least it shows that there's only 1% change in scores.
Would anyone actually be interested in using an ext4 mod?
There are some downsides (depending on how you view it):
ext3 and ext4 nandroids arnt compatable
You will need to do a fac reset on first install (as it reformats)
You will need seperate versions of CM9-mod and CWM
This space for rent
A simple modification of the boot.img to change init.streak7.rc mount points to ext4, easy as pie.
Yea that's what I did, along with a CWM recovery.fstab mod.
But like I said I havnt really noticed any changes in quad, and it's using /data for it's tests
As soon as I get wifi up and working on cm10, going to see if there is any benefit to switching

I installed corn kernel and its running fine and I found out that it is lagfix enabled.........just one doubt ....do I need to disable lagfix before flashing any roms? if so how to disable it ....I can see rfs and ext4 in cwm what are these?
which Corn version are you running?
I run 7.0a and by default, it has no lagfix. don't need it afaik.
rfs and ext4 are different types of linux file systems that are used to store data in partitions on your phone. my phone had froyo os with rfs partitions when I bought it new. It still has rfs partitions with Corn 7.0a GB KK4.
If you are messing around with file partitions in cwm recovery, just remember that any change from rfs to ext4 will completely reformat the partition and you will lose any data on it.
If you flash ICS or JB, you are going to an ext4 file system.
goes without saying: backup everything with cwm and a backup app like titanium bu, then copy all of it to an external sd, computer or cloud. if on sd, remove it before flashing, to be safe.

The Ext 4 is not enabled by default in the Corn Kernels.
And Yep...flash away.
