***WARNING***
Before you do this, remember that it's your $500+ toy and your responsibility, not mine. I'm just this guy, you know?
Here's a quick way to get Clockworkmod on a locked (and even unlocked) Tab:
-Get this ODIN flashable CWM 4.0.0.4 for GTab 10.1 WiFi. This is only for the WiFi model and will boot to a black screen on any other model. If you have an LTE, you must use the image in this post.
-Follow this procedure, but instead of flashing the file listed there use the one you just downloaded
Congrats, you are now running CWM. If you want to return to stock retail use this image instead.
Image creation procedure detailed in the last three steps here.
Nice thx bro. Some really good stuff from you lately
Pokey,
Once I do this mod and have CWM running will I be able to flash files via CWM?
I have a locked bootloader and am not able to select a zip to flash when I am in the stock recovery.
I guess what I am asking is if I do your mod will I be able to use CWM to flash the root zip so I can root my tab?
Thanks
Super thanks!!
It worked like charm in my locked retail 10.1!!! I've also installed su, busybox etc. Titanium backup works with su!!
Thanks
Yes, Just did it!!

Did you have to flash the exploit zip after or were you rooted after odin installed CWM?
Did you have the debugging mode checked when using odin?

I installed the exploit zip after odin using the CWM. I put it in download mode as described.
Has anybody else used this method on a retail tab with the locked boot loader?
I only see one person posting that it worked for them and am wondering if anybody else has been successful?
Thanks
Is it necessary to flash a new kernel after flashing CWM in order for it to stick? Or does this permanently flash CWM?

This flashes CWM permanently. This gives the same result as the other locked root procedure if you ODIN this file then flash the stock rooter .zip.
ok, i just did it myself and everything worked flawlessly.
Just run Odin, choose the zip from OP in the PDA field, leave everything else as it is.
Put the tab in download mode and flash using odin.
After that download the root exploit and flash the zip using CWM.
Stalls on SetupConnection for me.
does the locked tab allow you to flash a kernel?
will this work on the first galaxy tab sgh-t849
model: gt-p1000?

Yes, only the stock locked recovery prevents you from flashing a kernel, so replacing it with CWM lets you flash whatever.

Maybe this process works for the original Tab, but the image I posted here is for the 10.1 only.
so the ability to flash kernels means if ICS doesnt make it to the 10.1, we can get it through CM or some other ROM? Thats the only thing keeping me from buying the tab, i want to make sure its future proof, software wise.

Samsung could lock down ODIN or start requiring signed kernels and ramdisks by updating the bootloader with an OTA. Even the nvflash unlocked retail and I/O Tabs aren't entirely safe since the security fuses can be blown from software. I can't see a reason why they would ever want to though since they'd piss off a lot of customers.
alright thanks a lot. It seems a bit odd that samsung even locked the bootloader in the first place, given that they dont lock their phones down. I'll probably end up getting one. Thanks for the help.
noob question, but this isn't going to wipe my data is it?
Just flashing CWM will not wipe your data, but if you plan on flashing a ROM, or the TW update then you will be required to wipe

you cant, you would need to download the original firmware to flash it to stock, you might try one of the backup tool in the market but a full nandroid backup you cant do unless rooted

Ok I have a root now ,
when I rebooted my note to recovery I get this : Android system recovery <3e>
It looks like CWM but has no backup and restore options and thats why Iam confused
How I can get the CWM I used to use with my HTC Sensation
It looks like you only did root when what you wanted was root + CWM.
Go back to Dr.Ketan's guide and look at the procedure below this line that is in the first post:

My summary of your best options:
Follow from Step 2 and use the already-rooted.bat file
OR
The better (in my opinion) way:
Purchase Mobile Odin Pro(MOP) from the market and go get the CF Root Kernel that matches your firmware to get CWM. Just put the Kernel on your sdcard and run MOP, make sure EverRoot and all injections are checked, select file, find kernel, flash. Done.
MOP has also enabled us to retain root when flashing stock firmware updates by using the EverRoot and injections options, however you will lose most CWM functions when this is done. To regain CWM, you simply follow the same steps as above to update to a matching CF Root Kernel.
Have fun, and be sure to hit the thanks button for Ketan and Chainfire!
Dear beestee,
So: I have Kernel KK2 - Download This - and Extract
then : I am Already Rooted - Execute "already-rooted.bat" and follow the instructions
is there any side effects ? like format ot can not Upgrade via OTA or else?
Is there any thing need to be packed up first? like the original kernel if this method will change it
Nothin side effect, you can upgrade over OTA, BUT If you update over OTA/kies, you will lose Root.
So you have to use CWM or Mobile odin to update newer ROM

Ok I done it and it working, but I found that CWM is a program now you can access from phone not like in HTC where you must inter bootloader and MAGLDR to inter CWM
I can make the backup and restore from inside the program - right?
You can get it with entering recovery too, you have to press Home + Vol UP + Power to enter in recovery mode.
you can simply do it with inside app - restart in recovery
when you give command to backup, it will restart and auto enter in recovery mode and finish it

I have rooted and installed super SU on the galaxy note n7000.
Running ICS 4.0.4
Modem is XXLRK
Kernel is XXXLRK-CL811902
Build Number is XXLRK
Am i right in thinking that all i have to do is
- recovery Mode boot
- Jbroid Kernel Cleaner (original) flash jBroid_Kernel_Cleaning_Script_Ed-1.zip
- after that flash Abyss4.2 redpill
- reboot in Recovery (under Advanced )
- Wipe data/factory
- Wipe cache/dalvik
- flash Rom
I have all these files however when i go to recovery (which i think it hold, Home, Power and up on the phone.
It says stock recovery, so am i right in thinking that there is no CWM for the note? As the choices i have when in this recovery does not cover install from SD card?
So how would one flash something? Shall i rename it to update.zip???
Many thanks.

Thanks for the reply, and to answer your question i wouldn't know, but it is showing stock recovery, plus this isn't even my phone, i'm using a SGS3, which was a walk in the park, it appears that the note has gone through a very different route for the root / installing a custom rom process.
As it's not my phone i obviously don't want to pass him a paper weight back and say "Sorrrry i tried "
So with that in mind, i'm kinda hoping for bit of help.
But if it means downgrading and what not then i might just give it back to him.
Would be nice to get a win out of this though.
Just out of curiosity, why would you need to downgrade to GB to get CWM working on the note? Surely there must be a way from ICS? root and SU went on well, it's just i'm stuck now and there appears to be a lot of pit falls.
I found this guide but it's pretty vague http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360

first i am suggesting you as ics is dangerous and not 100% safe even with good kernels.
second yes there is a way for cwm recovery in ics and you need to follow the signatures of dr.ketan sir.
third as i hope the phone is rooted but not showing cwm,so that's why suggesting you to downgrade then upgrade to any custom rom.
fourth custom roms are not safe to flash right from ics.it is better to downgrade to pre-rooted gb rom then do that.

In all honesty i'd recommend everyone rooting their own phone anyway as if something goes wrong then they'll know where they're up to when they want to fix it.

2- after i flash custom kernel and install a new rom, i can make wipe all from custom recovery? After that danger situationto brick it will be forever gone?

As long as you are on GB kernel, you are safe to wipe.
1. Check my sig. for excellent rooting guide by Dr.Ketan (post #3 for LA6), it will help in installing cwmr too.
2. You can wipe on any of the safe custom ICS kernels (if you flash custom ICS rom) just do not wipe on stock ICS kernels.
3. check galaxy_S unlock in play store to unlock, I dont think it is unsafe to do it (except some carrier terms, may be)
4. Once you flash stock firmware you will be back to normal. flashing stock firmware will also change kernel to stock.
I would suggest read a lot before doing anything as flashing custom roms, kernels or modding always include some risk.

No prob, and by the way, why don't you simply flash pre-rooted GB rom (look for it in my sig.), it is already rooted and includes CWM recovery too. All you have to do is to just flash it and then flash any custom rom of your choice using cwm recovery.
Reason why I suggested flashing pre-rooted GB is that your rom seems to be non directly rootable and I think only option is to flash pre-rooted rom. (atleast as per my understanding)

Right now i download SGN_XX_OXA_KJ1_FACTORYFS (GB Pre rooted ROM)
After that, since that pre-rooted rom have root, i can install cwm right?

Update your phone the official way ie go into settings/about phone/ and your phone should update to ics. Then flash notecores kernal http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749863 using odin then your good to go i personally find this rom the besthttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1716088 but every1 has diffrent opinions depends wat u want.

If you choose to flash pre-rooted GB rom, then no need to install cwm separately, as it already includes cwmr, you just have to choose some custom rom and flash it using cwm recovery.
I was about to suggest you the other method of updating to stock ICS first and then rooting but it will take more time and it is of no use as your end motive is to flash custom roms

1- I will update to stock ics

4- install custom rom (from cwm) since i can wipe after

Step 2 u can skip as its already done (dont know about root but definatly cmw) u wil not need root anyway as u can power down phone and reeboot into recovery via 3 button trick.
May i add step 6 install triangle away from play store as it will remove the triangle At boot as u flashed a kernal using odin.
As allways read and read again as uay already know that this phone has the brick problem but if u do everything by the book u will b ok.

That's is completely fine if you want to go this way , step 1 and 2 are okay but step 3 not required as flashing custom kernel via odin will root and install cwmr. You will get yellow triangle and custom binary count by flashing custom kernel, which can be reset using triangle away. check rooting guide in my sig, once you are on stock ICS or ask here.
Checked above post after I posted mine, seems like its getting confusing here, okay so once you are on Stock ICS you have two methods to root and install cwmr,
1. once you are on stock ICS just flash some custom kernel using odin, it will root your device and flash cwmr too, then use triangle away app to remove yellow triangle and reset binary count. (method 2 in rooting guide in my sig.)
OR
2. Once you are on stock ICS, follow method 1 in rooting guide in my sig. in this you can root using stock recovery and then can flash custom kernel using mobile odin, so no yellow triangle or custom binary count.

Good you clarify me
5% left from download and then i will flash the update to ics.
let me see if i understand, after update to ics i will flash a custom kernel via odin (this will have root and cwm too), i will restart the phone and install yellow triangle and reset binary count
then i must root using stock recovery as you say and install again a custom kernel since the yellow triangle doesnt show up anymore? or you want to say i can flash custom rom since the triangle dont show up? -> confuse!

Oh OTA, that's cool , now once you are on ICS (confirm it in setting/about phone before rooting) and then check rooting guide in my sig. and follow either method one OR method 2 described in it.

No need to have root to flash custom kernel via odin, it will root it automatically.
Do you have Samsung drivers installed on your PC? If yes then try restarting your phone once again.

You don't have to remove yellow triangle to install custom rom, you can still do it. Traingle away is just to remove the yellow triangle and to reset binary count for warranty purpose. Yes, you can wipe now, as you are on safe kernel.
Download any custom rom, which you wish to install, put it in your SD, boot in CWMR , perform full wipe and then flash the rom .zip.

THANKS FOR ALL!
Okay guys so I just rooted my att note 3 that was completely up to date using the towelroot.com method found here. Stupidly of me I was trying to follow a thread to change my system language in build.prop but after doing that It ONLY boots to recovery / safestrap. After the safestrap screen I tell it to continue to boot normaly and all i get after that is a black screen.
Any ideas? Is it possible to flash safestrap from odin / heimdall / recovery?
Ive tried factory resetting from safestrap and recovery and that didn't change anything.
I not even sure I have safestrap at this point I can get into recovery, and download mode but it sits at the "Samsung Galaxy NOTE 3 [Unlocked Icon] Custom" screen. It wont actually progress to the safestrap.
Before I tried to edit that build.prop the root / safestrap worked fine all day today, restarted several times for different reasons and still worked afterwards.
I had no encryption enabled.
Via recovery -
"Android system recovery <3e>
KOT49H.N900AUCUCNC2"
**** This Worked ****
Possibly? this as a fix?
Would this be okay to use as a stock Kitkat firmware resource for an Odin flash?
Anyone have a N900AUCUCNC2 ROM or firmware I can flash?

i have the .zip files for it and odin 3
*it sounds to me like a bootloop or a softbrick, I would recommend using this odin 3 and flash the stock kk rom the one i have is the unofficial and is pre-rooted. but it works when i bricked mine repeatedly trying roms.

That'd be awesome if you could get that to me some how. I more or less have everything fixed but the wake-up after entering my pattern lock is ungodly slow so I'd like to possibly try a different one.

I have a us cellular note 5, was trying to install a rom, failed and ended up deleting my system folder. I flashed the stock rom with odin, but the phone can only boot to the logo stops, and then goes to recovery mode

If you flashed a different recovery like TWRP then you'll have to use that again.. Have you rooted the phone before? If so, you probably have to flash stock firmware files one by one in Odin including flashing the recovery.

Since you've rooted the phone I'm gonna say the easiest way to fix this right now is to re-flash TWRP and download a rom that one of the devs on here have created and push it to the phone and use TWRP to flash it.. This is the best way for now since you are going to need a LOT more information and a better understanding of how to fully remove the root access because you cannot run a stock rom while rooted.. After you at least get it going then read around on here and you'll find all the answers and ways to fix things by those of us who've already been in your spot.

I'm trying to flash a custom rom but the most I can get it to do is hang up on the Samsung logo or a black screen, is there any specific roms I should try?
