I have just bought a Nook Color and slapped CM7 on it (very nice BTW). I would like to transfer files from my desktop to my Nook so they can be accessed at any time even when not on Wi-Fi.
At times of Wi-Fi, I can always use Dropbox, but how can I get them to stay on the Nook to be accessed whenver.
These files would usually be PDF, Excel, Word, other office type files.
Thanks.
Just use a micro SD card, I'm pretty sure cm7 requires one anyway, so there is no reason to have one.
Also, you can download files ffrom dropbox to your SD card for offline storage through the app itself

You can drag and drop the files when your Power cable USB is plugged into your PC.
You just need to open your NC notification bar - when it's plugged in - so your PC recognizes the device.
Sorry for the noob questions, but how would I open those files? Would I need to use a specific app? or will CM7 automatically open them?
If you long press on files in the dropbox app it gives you the choice to save them. They save to sdcard/dropbox. How they open depends on the file type. The nook can open several different kinds of files natively and you can download apps from the market to open anything that it won't. As for the actual process of opening files I usually use my file manager to navigate to the file I want to open and click on it. The nook will either open the file (if only one app handles that file type), ask which app I want to use to open the file, or nothing happens which means I have no app installed that can open that file type.
For office type files I suggest getting ezPDF free from the market and paying for Documents To Go. That way you can edit the MS Office stuff if you need to. RTFs suck. The only thing I know that will open them is the ebook app Cool Reader.
I hope this helps. We all started out as noobs.
also a noob here. i had copied the files to the nook already. so how do i access them now? i can't seem to get my way into this.
thanks!
To access your files use a file explorer such as root explorer.

Palm to forhead... I was missing the notification bar part. Couldn't figure out why I couldn't access any files on the Nook from my PC. Now I just need to figure out if there is a default directory where I am supposed to put music and movies on the microSD card.

No default place for music and movies but it would be simplest to just make a folder called music and one called movies just so that they are easier for you to f/nd.

I am running the customized Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 on a SD Card and have the Nook eReader installed. I am not sure how I move my personal ePub files - free books downloaded, no DRM - to be read on the Nook eReader. I tried to connect to my PC with a USB cable, then enabled USB on the NC. Then in Windows Explorer I tried moving the files to various directories like Nook, Nook/My Documents, My Files etc., but no matter where I put the files when I go into the Nook eReader it does not see the files (I am looking in My Files section). I even tried using Aldiko - that did not work either. Calibre says the files are transferred to the SD Card.
Any ideas? Would appreciate any help. Thanks.
Never mind I found the answer here. Interesting that you have to use ADB to push ePub files and you cannot transfer them using Calibre or Windows Explorer. I thought ADB was for programs only.
Thanks to all you guys for the fantastic job in making the NC a working Android tablet.
I use dropbox for this as well. GIven that I had updated 4 or 5 different builds and ran on SD card for each of them, it was handy to just download the dropbox.apk and have all of my personal epubs available each time.
Thats a great solution! Can you tell me where I can get more information on how to use Dropbox? I see I already have the app.

+1 for this. Running the same config and haven't messed around with adb at all.
Disclaimer : I don't use the nook app; I use fbreader, so ymmv with this.
Anyways, the way I get epubs out of Calibre onto the nook is via the Calibre webserver. Turn it on on your pc (In Calibre, Preferences->Sharing->Sharing over the net, set up what you need, then hit the Start Server button), then access it via your nook color's web browser (make sure you use the port you set up in the url, that that port isn't blocked by a firewall, etc).
From there, you can just click to download the epubs. On mine (nookie froyo), it asks whether I want to complete the action with the browser or with fbreader. I choose fbreader and it will download it and add it to its library (if you're curious where the files get dropped, on mine it's /mnt/sdcard/Books/<ip address of my desktop>/get/EPUB).
FBReader can also talk to OPDS servers for network libraries, which the calibre web server also talks (it's just a specifically formatted) xml feed). Go into Network Library, then click the Add Catalog link. The OPDS url to use:
http colon slash slash <your server ip>:<port you setup>/opds/
(gotta love new user link protection)
The resaon I go through the nook browser instead of the network library is because the calibre web server allows actual searching. The OPDS feed doesn't allow searching (though it does allow you to get at your library through a number of different categorizations, which might be sufficient for you). Fair warning, too, that since I haven't used OPDS much, there may be something I'm missing about it.
Thanks very much for the detailed response. Just got back in town - will try it this weekend.
I have been playing with the "Files" app on my new Droid Bionic but cannot figure out how to make it see files (i.e. documents) on my PC (Windows 7). When I go to Files => Shared folders => Add Server => Scan for server, it will show the IP addresses of all my networked computers. If I click on one of the IP addresses is will say "Server is not reachable". I was able to see the files on a networked printer that has a built-in card reader (with an SD card installed) so I know that it will work.
Any help would be great. I would love to be able to see and download documents from my PC to my Bionic without plugging in the USB.
Well one easy way is just add the folders to the zumocast app. Bam! Available anywhere anytime to view or download.
This problem has to do with how the stock file app accesses the network when trying to connect to windows 7 64bit.
The fix requires changing some line in your windows registry.
What I recommend is using estrongs, file manager or the astro file manager.
All of those 3 are after market apps that can access your PC just fine without you having to change anything in your registry.
If your away from home and your PC just happens to be online, I recommend using zumocast like the last user suggested.
You won't be able to copy files to your PC with it, but you can still access your files with no problem.

Thanks for these suggestions. I had not gotten around to installing Zumocast because I thought it was just for streaming media which I can also do with DLNA. Zumocast does, indeed, work very well. It is great to have access to any files in my Documents folder. It would be rare for me to want to send a file to my computer but if I need to there is always Dropbox.
Thanks again for everyone's help.
Anyone using WIFI file transfer app?? I jjust installed it and man, what a pleasure. No more messing with the flaky Nook cable. I can wirelessly transfer to and from my nook SD card from my desktop computer. This is making the copying of files so much nicer.
Did you mean WiFi Explorer?
Where do you go to get this app?
Thanks
Several do it, I used to use paid ones but "file expert" has that ability built in and is free.

I use Samba, makes your SD card a shared resource on a Windows network. It's slower than USB but all I use my cable for anymore is charging and the last time I swapped SD cards was when I moved to CM7.2.

I use eStrongs file manager. Hardly used a cable in years...
I tried ES File Manager but could not get connected with my PC on LAN. Took my head out of you know where and now I've got it working.
Is there a way to do batch file transfers with wftp? It took me a while to upload a bunch of books to my NC using that program one file at a time. Other than that I do like it alot better than having to hook up the usb.
I use good old Dropbox, mostly because it is the easiest ad I can just drop something in there without having my nook with me.

I use DropBox as well. Simple to use and I can upload file from any PC I am on whether it is installed or not.

If in windows ftp integration of internet explorer lets you open as a window for drag&drop of multiple files at once.
Haven't seen any other browsers with integration like that, only reason I keep internet explorer around even though I use something else for actual browsing.
Should be available for most wifi transfer apps, any that use ftp for share at least.

I used swift ftp server on my nook and whatever ftp client you like on any platform. On windows I use filezilla.
I got Wifi Explorer Pro from getjar and it does everything. The interface is very nice also. Best of all because it is on getjar it is a paid app that is free.
EDIT: Re-editing my post to remove the rant.
Basically, MTP ignores folders with .nomedia files in them... very short sighted.
Just wondering if there are any good alternatives out there, and what people prefer, other than just rebooting to recovery to mount USB?
I use wireless transfer apps like Samba. You can set it up on your network and browse the touchpad just like another directory.

True, that does work. I have been using Android Commander, which freezes sometimes... and doesn't like to connect over USB, so I have to use WiFi.
I guess what I'm hoping for is something that will work over USB which is a little faster for transfers than WiFi, which can be pretty slow for larger files.
The reason MTP ignores other files is because it stands for Media Transfer Protocol.

Yeah, I think I'm smart enough to figure that out.
Don't care. It is insufficient, because it makes it very difficult to manage the SD Card as a filesystem, forcing use of 3rd party utilities. I've heard all of Google's excuses for ending support of USB Mass Storage mode, but in the end, they did not give us a workable alternative.
The reason I use a .nomedia file is because I'd rather not have thousands of images from manga/comics, etc, show up in my Gallery app.

Well i don't know how smart you are and was just trying to be helpful ,its not often I get told for trying . I will try to be more careful/refrain before offering any advice in the future.
I use FTP to transfer files from PC to my touchpad vise versa first install ES file explorer from Play Store, go to settings> remote settings> turn on remote manage> set the parameters
Use filezilla on your PC to enter the IP add of your touchpad>quick connect and you can access your tablet files
I use Android Sync Manager over WiFi (Free in the Play Store and a free download for the PC) which lets me transfer back & forth over a WiFi network connection.
OK I will try again there is an app called USB Mass Storage Watcher. I have just installed it and put a tick in Mount mass storage automatically. Now when I connect to my PC although the tablet says connected as media device when I open the USB SD card on my computer I am able to see all files and tested by transferring a 1.3 g backup file to my desktop.
Maybe this helps ?
I apologize if these questions have already been answered but I didn't see them in any Nook HD+ forum/thread.
1) I downloaded some books from B&N prior to rooting the Nook. I then rooted the Nook HD+ and I can still read the books thru the default reader but I can't seem to locate them in any folder. I tried two different file viewers from Google Play and can't seem to find them anywhere. Does anybody have an idea of where they could be stored? I know they are stored locally somewhere since I have WiFi turned off. My reason for asking is I would like to access them from the new launcher (using another reader) rather then going to the B&N home page.
2) My next question involves connecting to my desktop. I use openSUSE and run WinXP in an Openbox VM. Whether in Linux or using WinXP in VM I can't access the folders on Nook. I was able to get the drivers working to use ADB (in the WinXP VM only), but I can't get any folders to show up in a file manager. Well, I actually get one folder to show up, called "NOOK", but it has very limited storage. I tried this with both developer mode on Nook turned on and off. I can transfer files to Nook (and see personal folders) when using Win Media player and Nook set to MTP, but I can't see any folders with a file manager. Any idea on what is going on? BTW, it would be nice if I could see everything from Linux without having to use WinXP.
Thanks for any help. Also, many, many thanks to Someone0 for the simple root instructions. Much better use of the Nook HD with general Android apps available.

Thanks...that helps. Wonder what the purpose of the /sdcard/B&N Downloads directory is. Very confusing.

No clue...the external sd card also gets a B&N Downloads folder.
