[Q]Difference between ROM & Kernel? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Would appreciate it if someone can explain to me the difference between a kernel and a Rom.
And also, what does it mean by "pushing to /system/app"?
Thanks in advance.

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=kernel+rom

Can someone guide me on how to push an app to system/app please?
I know it has something to do with ADB but I do not know the exact steps. Thanks.

At first you need root access. Then you need an app like 'Root Explorer' and with this app you can push files into /system - folder.

Imagine a rom as a car. The kernel would be the engine.

How about a better answer?
A kernel is a piece of software (kind of like a program/executable) that interfaces directly with your hardware and provides a standardized interface for higher level software to use that hardware.
ROM means Read Only Memory. In this case, ROM is not the proper term but it is in common usage despite the fact that you can write it/overwrite it. Regardless of the details, for your purposes, a ROM is the higher level software that provides interfaces between the kernel and you. E.G. the libraries, windows manager, etc.
I am unsure in this context, but I think the ROM contains the CSC stuff too. The CSC contains stuff specific to a particular locale or vendor such as programs like Layar or codes for APNs.
I followed the above Let Me Google That For You link and this thread was the first one that popped up. I quickly browsed a few other threads but getting any real meaning was going to be quite tedious.
Good luck and have fun.

first one is a thread from a year ago with exactly the same title

The kernel manages system resources and functions like a bridge between applications and hardware. One could compare it in many ways, but this is generally what it does.

Thanks all for the explanation. Will search around to understand the differences.

May I know how exactly do I push the apk to /system/app? I have Root Explorer installed already.
Do I move the apk to /system/app then install it from there? Or am I supposed to install the normal way, then shift the apk from /data/app (where apps are usually installed to right?) to /system/app?

Which *.apk do you want to install?
Normally you just have to click on the *.apk (with any file manager) and you can install it.

At first, you need root.
After that, you have a few ways to do this:
Way 1: Use any File Explorer, which can get SU permission and access the system folder.
Then copy & paste
Way 2: You could connect your device to your computer with a USB cable (Debug-Mode on!).
Then you couls google a ADB tool.
Or you open the command line and type this into your cmd:
cd [drive]:\[folder where adb is located]\
adb root
After that you could find out where you are with the "ls" command.

I am actually trying to do this --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123830
Installing
You can install the EDT Tweaks app or you can push it to /system/app
You must push SystemUI.apk to /system/app
I don't want to make a flashable quite yet because I want more experienced users to test this out, etc

So am I supposed to push first then install or the other way round?
I tried installing the normal way, then shifted the apk from /data/app to /system/app but received an error when I tried to open the app.

Anybody please?

Root access with Astro?

Is there anyway to start Astro as root so you can use it to edit system directories?
I had wished for the same thing.. but i didnt tell nobody.. soo maybe this will be more effective. prevents having to type in the terminal all the time.. not that its bad.. ive learned so much allready since ive had this phone...
I totally agree! That would be perfect! Maybe there a way of editing the code or smth...
If you can't work *MORE EFFICIENTLY* directly from the terminal, then you definitely should NOT have root access via GUI.

Pretty much this. It seems like most of the people having problems on this website just want root because it's "kewl" but really have no idea what it is or even have a clue on how Linux works.
I actually Emailed the Dev of Astro about this same question and here was his reply.
Here is the email copied and pasted from gmail.
My question
Are you able to make a version that requests root access to delete chmod rename move etc for the 100,000+ users from xda and other boards with root access?

Considering the fact that I'm a Systems Administrator as my profession and work with hundreds of Linux/Unix/Windows servers a day, the whole reason why I bought the G1 was for development and tinkering, the fact that my home PC is running Vista x64 (i haven't gotten around to creating a VM or messing with the drivers), and that I do wipes frequently to test different configurations, I'm pretty sure I'll be ok with root access. I'm just tired of manually doing something on that tiny keyboard that can easily be done with a nice pretty GUI. I stare at consoles all day and thousands of lines of black and white text, when I come home I don't exactly want to be anywhere near a terminal.
Also, why bother doing anything on a phone, other than using it as a phone (or for email, texting, etc.), if you don't do it because it's "kewl". I mess with my phone because it's cool to have a mini-*nix based computer with several fun radios on it. If I do something stupid like type "rm -Rf /*" after logging in as root (never going to happen) then that's my own fault.
I don't care if you're a Unix purist and you write up your office reports, spreadsheets, and diagrams in vi. Good for you, you're wasting time that can be better spent on other things because of your stubborn prejudice against GUI's. I asked a question, because I have a reason for that question. If you don't have any answers to that question, then please don't bother replying.

I looked into the commands to launch an application from the CLI and found that Astro can be started using the following command:
am start -n com.metago.astro/.FileManagerActivity
However, this doesn't do us any good, since the dalvik VM will take that command and create a process as a sandbox user regardless of what user executes that command. There looks like there's a way to tell the VM to fork the process as a specific uid and gid, but that requires editing the AndroidManifest.xml.
I'm not too good with Java, and I don't know how strict Android's API is, so I don't know if running an apk application as root is even possible.
However, I do know that running commands from inside an application, like su, is possible.

Solved--Astro with root...(workaround)
kinda late, but in case anyone wants to know this is what I did.
This way technically doesnt allow astro to run with root, but its just as good.
I originally did this a few months back for my G1, and just mod it a little to work on my nexus
- created a script to mount system as rw
- created a script that gives r/w permission to all app directories (/data, /data/app, /data/app-private, /system, /system/app, /system/sd, ...) and all apps inside those directories
-then merged the 2 scripts and named it astro_root_perm
-installed GScript from the market
-created another script that
-first changes all permissions on apps back to what they started as(644, 640...)-then changes permissions of directories back to what they were-and finally remounts system back to ro, and named this script to astro_basic_perm
-used Gscript to create shortcuts of the 2 scripts to my home screen.
-then with bettercut, I changed the scripts' icons to the astro icon. I just colored the astro stock icons "A" green for one script and red for the other
So anytime I want to use astro as root, I just click the shortcut I made with gscript off my home screen, open astro,
Then when Im done with astro, I just run the other script
I know its not the same as running astro AS root, but it works for me.
Im not really a linux guy......I'd really appreciate if someone could help me with this next step
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Does anyone know what I need to include in a script to have it call/open a program automatic?
My ultimate goal is to create one script that will
Mount system rw
Change needed permissions to rw
Automatically open up Astro
Then change all permissions back when astro is terminated
Possibly create a keyboard shortcut for the G1
What do ya think?? is it possible??
Estrongs has limited root file browsing on some ROMs and SU File Manager or Root File Manager will let you browse as root for a small price.
+1 recommendation on Estrongs File Explorer's root option if you want it for free, includes Windows shares browsing over lan.
Otherwise try SUFBS, also has built-in terminal.

I'm not sure exactly how gscript handles things, but with a normal bash (shell) script, the lines are run sequentially. That is, the next line isn't run until the previous line is done. It would seem that you could put all that in one script, and the still-running script wouldn't change the permissions back until astro has ended. But then again, java adds complexity to it and I'm not sure if it works the same.

Love this idea! Unfortunatly I'm no coder but would love to see something like this created.
I created a "GodMode" script that does exactly this, email me if you want it, I can edit it to work for the G1.
Totally forgot I started this thread, then happened to find it on Google when looking for the same thing, again.
Went back to Windows Mobile for a little bit, missed Android, and now have a Samsung Vibrant.
Still want a way to use ASTRO with root priviledges, especially since I don't have a tactile keyboard anymore.

Finally rooted my Vibant - How to remove stock apps?

I've searched around a bit (maybe not as long as I should've), but I don't see how to remove the stock bloatware apps that come with this phone.
Can someone point me to a guide, or give me a quick run down?

Maybe I'll try that. Do you have to actually do a backup/restore process before you can remove them? Or can you just remove them from the app itself?

You could do that but then ur left with a /data/data folder for ur app and its name under packages.xml.
The other thing that kills me is that a lot of these apps keep popping up for now reason. I run "Advanced Task Killer" on a frequent basis, but I'll find apps like "Slacker" sitting there, taking up memory.
I know a lot of these apps are set to run on startup.... but why are they just starting up at random times?
I feel like I have so little control over this phone... it actually scares me. I knew everything my WinMo phone was doing at all times.

I went to Samsung Firmwares and got the UGJG8 firmware and flashed that using Odin and 512.pit. You will get a 100% bone stock i9000m with no bloatware.

Its like uninstall a windows software. Your deleting its c:\program files directory whereas im going to "uninstall software" and following procedure.

Now, is that a script I need to write for each app? I haven't even gone so far as to explore the file system, let alone write scripts. Is there a good (recommended) app for putting scripts together? ...or are you just using a notepad type editor in Windows, then copying them over via SD card?

Sure u can write a quick .bat script that does this or manually enter them in command-prompt up 2 u. Btw, what exactly is ur issue with the bloat-software ? is it the space its taking up ? or being shown in app drawer ? Cuz if ur using launcher-pro u can hide those apps from the drawer. Honestly they don't take up tht much space.

Well, the biggest thing is that they're actually running without me opening them (eg: Slacker). That is really starting to piss me off. Secondly, they are very clutter-some. I don't have Launcher Pro, though I've heard good things about it. Is this something I get from the Marketplace? It runs instead of the Samsung interface, right?

Does anyone have the next most recent version?

[APP] MakeUpdateZip-20110303 **Multi-file capable**

This is not only my first Android app, but this is also my first dive in Java. Please be gentle as I expect there are several uncaught / improperly handled exceptions.
This app will backup selected files to a zip file that can be restored via cwm. For now, that is all it does. It can be handy for the oc/uv crowd since it will allow you to keep a backup of a good S_volt_scheduler init file to flash in case your new setting are too aggressive. It does not currently restore permissions, nor does it assume root permissions.
todo:
Obtain root to copy any file
Integrate a file selector so read permissions will not be an issue.
Detect/Restore permissions
Possible feature additions:
Create a restore.zip from current files based on an update.zip you want to apply. Could save you from boot loops when messing with system files.
Create a restore.zip given a file, a target directory, and permissions.
I will probably add this to the market once I get through the todos and initial bugs.
Changelog:
20110303
Multi-file capable. OIFileManager does not yet support multi-select, so each file must be selected seperately
Exception caught for mission OIFileManager
_delete.zip file seems to work correctly in recovery
Since I am not yet using root and OIFileManager will not assume root, there are some directories that cannot be viewed, /data/app for example. There are also some files that can be selected but cannot be copied due to their permissions.
Requires OIFileManager
Nice, will be useful
This looks like it could be a useful/powerful app. It could definitely benefit from some features (more than one file/location would be great) but I can see myself using this.
Thanks!

You are welcome. I actually have another app in mind to fully address that need, but I want to get further along with this one first. Since I am working on these on stolen time (I don't have any free time), it will take a while.
Since the apps seem to restore without permission issues, I may put that on the back burner. After I complete multi-file support, which of the future features from the op would you like to see first.

Installing custom kernel on temp root? (AT&T Vivid)

I'm considering buying a HTC Vivid from AT&T, from what I've read, the bootloader for the AT&T Vivid is locked, but it is possible to temporarily unlock it. I also plan to overclock my phone, I've found custom kernels that can overclock the vivid, they say that the phone needs to be rooted. But is a temp root going to give me enough access to install the overclocking kernel? I have jailbroken consoles and HP Touchpad, but I haven't really played with Android or Linux. So if please excuse me if my terminology is used incorrectly. Thanks.
You can unlock the bootloader through HTC'S dev site and get perm root. Just follow the superguide in the development section and you will be good to go.

Edit: I saw that it installed an app called Superuser, but I can't install any apps through Superuser, do I need to put the apk file in a specific folder in order for Superuser to recognize it? Thanks.

That was helpful. I was just looking for a way to install apps to my phone. So far it seems like maybe I can modify the .bat script from the temp root method to install .apk files that way, but that seems risky and I don't want to mess up my brand new phone.
Seems like this is the wrong site to ask, this is a developer site, so I guess I'll ask this somewhere else.

Seems like this is the wrong site to ask, this is a developer site, so I guess I'll ask this somewhere else.

no, you just need to use some logic, and this little thing called SEARCHING
you want to install apps on your phone?
you just put them on your sdcard or download them from the phone itself, open a file manager, browse to the apk file and click on it. it will ask to install..... you are making this out to be way harder than it is. and you did not need root for that to take place. its a function of the OS, you dont need the computer in order to install apps.....this is all basic android stuff you could learn by using GOOGLE....
and you are right, this is a developers site, it is not a hold-my-hand site for noobs.....

No need to ask anywhere, google is your friend. Installing apps is very easy, and rooting isn't even necessary. As PG already said, it's as easy as using a file explorer, and also checking that box in the settings about unknown sources.

Thanks for the link, those methods are definitely easier than what I did. I edited the temp root .bat file to copy the .apk file to the phone's internal memory, then I used Astro brower to browse to that directory, then install it from there.

dude, all you have to do is plug in your phone and when it asks you set it to disk mode...it shows up as another drive on your computer...you dont need to use any kind of bat file....this is all seriously generic and basic android usage. as i stated before:
you have some reading to do......
its not to be mean, but seriously, you are asking stuff like this in the same breath as ROOTING your phone. this type of stuff isnt meant to be taken lightly or without some READING and comprehension. know what you are doing to your phone before you royally screw it up....
at this rate, i have a feeling it wont be long before we see a help thread....
I don't understand either. Why not do it the apk way? That is the easiest method. It takes like twenty second to allow unknown sources, go to file manager, click on the apk and install it.

[Q] Pure "Google Experience" AOSP for First?

With Facebook turned off, the First seems like a terrific phone, particularly for those who do not want (what can be confusing) Manufacturer's extras. I found the S4 particularly confusing AND annoying, particularly after coming from an unbranded, generic Chinese manufacture phone.
Although the First stock ROM is nearly bloat-free, is there a "GE" ROM available for the First that does not lock-in the AT&T extras such as their tethering check, Free Wireless app, Video Messaging, etc? I figure I would rather add features than have them as default.
Mine is due tomorrow!
Thanks --LS
Not yet. I'm not sure if cm will support the first.

Absolutely Android v4.0.3. It was a MTK6575 Android (w007) iPhone clone. Really nice until the backlight (or LCD) died after 7 months. So it still works, just can't tell what you are doing.
Tried a Galaxy S4 Active with an ATT ST SIM,, but it was REALLY locked down and the ROM crazy busy.
I figured the First can be my next phone unless it becomes a "holding pattern" for the Moto X or Nexus 5
You can freeze some apps and delete others via ADB shell with root access. Or clean out a stock rom before loading.

Thanks for the links. Pretty sure I don't know enough to "clean out" a ROM, though, which is why I was looking for the "pure" ROM. I'll Google for some guides. Any suggestions?

Bloatware is usually in "\system\app\" alongside essential system apps. If you're not sure about an app just Google the filename.
To clean an installed rom use ADB with root permissions. If you boot your phone into recovery you can use these commands without obtaining root in ADB shell.
Code:
adb shell
cd /system/apps
ls
rm ATT_myATT.apk
To delete those files from a ROM zip, you need to be in Linux. The reason is Android contains files that have the same names but only differ in caSE (because its design was so carefully thought out), so you need case sensitive file system support to save the zip. I just load up an Ubuntu live CD or USB drive to do the dirty work.

Thank you. That is certainly within my level of experience, as is using Root Explorer to change permissions or delete apps. I thought you were going to tell me to use a 'kitchen' and decompile. I think I'm ready to go!
I just use titanium backup to uninstall bloatware lol or use root explorer system/app/delete whichever
