Captivated Brick Question - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I think my phone may be dead. I decided to Odin 1-click to Eclair from Cognition beta 1. My phone started, made it to rfs and then froze. The phone will not boot, recognize usb, charge, anything.
Does Eclair one click flash primary and secondary bootloaders? I know without them ordering a jig is useless. I have an upgrade and I can get a new phone but I would much rather fix my captivate. Any help guys?

I have odin'd back to stock from Cog 5 without problem but if you used the odin with the three button fix, you are screwed. the 3 button fix odin will mix bootloaders since it only loads one froyo/eclair bootloader.

Alright, I finally have time to sit at the computer.
The phone was running Cognition 5Beta1.
I did not use ODIN 1-click. I used ODIN3 v1.0, placed pit.pit in the pit, placed PDA in the PDA, Connected the phone and held the vol bumper. Phone booted into download and connected as COM4. (JF7 software) I clicked start, the phone made it all the way to RFS, the green bar made it approx 20% across and then the bump, the progress bar froze and would not continue any further. Now phone will not respond to any button. However, the battery was warm when I left it on the charger all night.
Doesn't the phone need the primary bootloader for charging?
I made the $1 JIG and failed. I do not have steady hands though. I'm pretty sure the phone needs JTAG but just wanted to sit and type everything out to make sure. I figured if sbl.bin completed that I would have a bootloader.

To answer my own question, my phone now has mismatched bootloaders and needs JTAG. Looks like it will be sent off soon.

Yeah That happened to me. Had GB loaders and went back to stock using JF6 secure. However I checked for an OTA update and there was one. So being the experimental type I downloaded it and while it was installing it failed halfway and complete Brick.....I realized soon afterwards my mistake. A few days and $50 later MobileTech sent me back a stock fixed device. Well worth it.
Last night I tried to use ODIN 3 1.3 to go back to stock out of a bootloop and since I have a new model captivate it doesn't play nice with 1.3. Got the infamous blackout. Thought I bricked again but soon after the phone-PC image appeared and I knew there was hope.
Used the JIG and ODIN3 1.8
to flash stock and reflashed my ROM.
Looking for an alternative to Continuum. seems to get laggy after a week or so. With an SGS 2 on the way I may go back to Froyo on this one or COG beta 5

Are you sure? Read AdamOutler's thread on the one click unbrick. Its possible you trashed a different file that is causing the black screen.

I tried the one click unbrick. Adam is doing some awesome work there. It will help a lot of people. Unfortunately, I was not one of them.
I looked at the flashing order and traced to where my flash failed. I only flashed one bootloader. A gingerbread/eclair mix doesn't boot, Haha.
It was also a pleasure talking to you as well. I've also decided one thing, I'm ditching this Atrix when my Captivate is fixed. It's a really awesome phone but I can't stand not having an AMOLED. Looks like I'll be waiting on the Galaxy S II to make it over.

It may sound silly, but i encountered the same problem today.
Disconnected my usb when working with odin and got permanently bricked.
Phone did not turn on, no indicator of charging, freaked out..
All i did was kept my mobile for charging for 20 mins even though it did not display that battery bar, disconnected from power supply, took out sim, ext sd, and removed the battery for 1 min and put it back and tried out the two button download mode, and done, my phone went into download mode, and then recovered everything back..
I know it sounds silly, but maybe of some help...

Should I exchange it?

Like alot of people said in other posts I am experiencing not being able to get into recovery mode via the 3 button combo.when it comes to rooting I was wondering how important it was. I'm new to android and unless I'm not mistaken, there are other methods to rooting.however I'm more concerned if something goes wrong, I want to make sure I can get things back to normal and not be bricked. Also, when the froyo update comes out I'm going to want to revert to stock. To people who are experienced at rooting, how necessary is it. If it is I will return it, but I'm worried the one I will get will have gps issues and so far mine has been lucky enough to have gps work almost flawlessly.

i personally dont know how necessary it is but, all i know is you can side load apps like roms so u can play the emulators they have such as sega genesis and what not. also you will be able to get the apps we normally cant get in the android market such as: super mario wallpaper, tethering, and many other 3rd party apps that are available that we cannot get. i dont know all of them. but comming from a jailbroken iphone jailbreaking the captivate is way more difficult. android is not as user friendly when it comes to the technical geek stuff. my captivate is a week old now
but i think you should wait on the froyo then wait to see if they come out with a one click root method for 2.2, which they probally will. i was close to rooting mine but it seems a little bothersome to convert it back to stock. so i would just hold off till froyo
Yea, I'm just thinking I should than exchange my cappy for one that will go into recovery mode via the button combo.I'm not very experienced in rooting but from what I understand if you can't you have more of a chance in bricking the phone. Not sure though.

As of right now, there are many root methods provided and all of them work flawlessly (provided you follow directions).

Nope, not worth s shot, if you can't boot into recovery, how do you plan to apply the root, you need recovery mode for this. Unless you plan to use ADB everytime. Eventually your phone will brick without being able to use the key combo method. To me it isn't worth taking the chance.

Yea I guess I should exchange it. Hopefully it won't take abunch of phones to get one that will, and if it does, hopefully they will let me test til I get it right. Anyone know if this is just something samsung just started on later date phones that were made to stop people from trying to root? I'm not sure how phone companies view phone rooting.

Yes, definitely exchange your phone. Also, I would test this function in store until you get one that works. From what I have read, it seems like there was a bunch of phone made during the week of 8-10-2010 thru about 8-14-2010 that had a hardware defect. There's another thread in the boards somewhere that people who can't use 3 button recovery post their build dates, and all so far fell into that build week.
I wouldn't even begin to mod my phone if I didn't have access to recovery or download mode by using buttons. If you rely on adb you are out of luck if you soft brick it.
Of course I'm going to try to test in store. How do I check the news manufacturing date?

[Q] Bricked phone, Jig is not working

Ok so what happened was, I installed the Voodoo Lagfix + sound kernal for froyo and then I was having issues with the sound so I decided to just restore the phone back to stock. I put it into download mode via ADB, opened Odin and started it but somehow the cord got unplugged right when it says do not unplug. This has happened to me before so I have a jig that I bought online. It worked many times before but now when I take out the sim and sd and put in the jig with battery it just doesnt turn on. it says off and then if i hold the power by myself it boots into Phone..!..Computer. I cant do the 3 button download mode trick because I have flashed with odin before and it hasnt worked since then. What should I do? Should I just call Samsung and or att and just say my device got disconnected when updating?
EDIT :
I have already sent the phone to samsung, they said its going to take a total of 7 to 8 days for me to get my phone back. Thank you to everyone who helped
I read that if you remove the batt, put it back in then while holding just volume buttons in plug in the usb. Tried it and it went to dl mode for me. Hope this helps.

[Q] <>This far from throwing my Galaxy S through the window! Pls Help!!

Can anyone help?
My Galaxy S froze today, as I reset it by taking the batt off, it would get past the loading Galaxy S screen.
I cannot get it either into recovery or download mode, i have tried every combo you can, dropped batt and in whilst holding buttons, I have tried inserting pc usb whilst doing the same, surely if its loading its recoverable, not sure about this jig thing??
Would rather fix it now!
Pls help guys n gals
Some phones didn't have recovery or download mode working from factory. Mine was like that but applied a fix just in case to avoid any future problems such as yours.
Seems like a jig is your only hope now. They go pretty cheap on eBay but if you can't wait then you can make one youself if you know how.

The jig is cheap on eBay. I was hesitant of getting one when I was on eClair, but it has worked each and every time that I've used it.
Just find a seller that has sold a few with positive feedback, but yeah I got into download mode no problem using it where I was "totally locked out" before like where you are at...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Ignore the jig options because it is stupid and the adb option is better and easy! Search it to activate download and recovery then flash a gingerbread rom then galnet, you'll then wanna make sweet love to your galaxy
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I was in the same situation a year ago, I couldn't make jig and it would take a nother day so I did the following:
Took a hairdryer , took the batt out of the phone, and used the hairdryer on the phones back(where the batt should be), then I think I placed the batt back, and applied the hairdryer again and it went into download mode !
If this doesn't work, just make or get a JIG, if you don't trust it , take ya phone to a Samsung Service Center (I'm lucky there's one 10km from my house)
Good luck !

+1 for ADB method, JIG is fine too but it's unnecessary if your PC can detect the phone when plugged in through the USB port, plus the JIG takes time to ship

Nexus 4 bricked :(

Well, last night my NS4 was bricked... Running Rasbean + trinity 109 I was performing an antutu benchmark and the device just powered off. Could not get it back on and only shows the red led. Tried everything that was available on the net (fastboot, flash stock images, 312321 button combinations etc.). I'm going to set up an RMA and already spoke to a Google rep. Since I ordered through a friend in the UK the RMA must ship there. Won't be a problem. Time to relock the bootloader and send that brick away
Congrats.
Btw. most people fixed it with just leaving it charging for a while and then rebooting.

Wasn't a solution available a few weeks ago, when someone posted a video of releasing the battery a bit and the red light disappeared and the phone started working again.
U can try to open the phone up and disconnect the battery then reconnect it. This is how some people got theirs to work again.

if fastboot works, it should be fine... system/data/boot/recovery are all flashable. fastboot boot recovery.img and reflash rasbean? after you flash stock images it just hangs at the google screen? i doubt it's bricked

I ended up just sending it back to T-Mobile (one year warranty) without locking the bootloader again for a replacement.

HTC one M7 charging issues

Okay so I usually charge my phone over night the other day I wake up check the phone and it wasn't charging. It keeps giving me the cannot charge in usb host mode. I know this has been posted a hundred times but I have read through the forums and tried every fix. Nothing works. Battery drains in a couple of hours with no use. My question is should I try to change the battery or the usb port? Has anyone had success with this? Or should I just sell it and get something else? Thanks for reading. Phone is not rooted completely stock. It does charge only when turned off, intermittently and only to about 98%.

But seriously you can unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery and do a factory reset / format data
then flash a rom it may come back to life.

I also get no response when connecting to computer. I talked to HTC service and they want the imei number which I can't get. I don't want to throw it out it was the best phone I've had but it sucks to have a $350 brick sitting on my table while I use my backup.

why can't you get the imei ?
just type fastboot getvar all from a command prompt in the fastboot folder
Maybe I'm not that advanced or I don't totally understand but it's not recognized at all if I connect to my computer. No sound and the computer doesn't see it. Only charges for a second then bootloop. Not sure what else to do?

so your not able to put the phone in bootloader ?
volume down + power
in bootloader hook to the PC tap power one time you should be in fastboot USB ... the PC should make a sound and you will be in fastboot mode.
from your fastboot folder on the PC type fastboot devices you should see your phones serial number. then fastboot getvar all will display all your phones info
I can get to the bootloader screen but when I try to make any selection it just freezes computer doesn't make any sound when connecting. I've read a lot and can't seem to find any info. everyone who has a similar problem is rooted and has a bad flash or something where I'm completely stock. I'm starting to think it might be a mother board issue. Thanks I appreciate anyone trying to help.

Yeah I suppose that's possible, but your the first I have seen.
Have you tried holding the power and volume down for over 2 min? the phone will reboot like 3 times but it resets something in the nand
I have tried that a couple of times and the holding a bright light on the sensors and leaving it on the charger for days. The funny thing is at first it would charge when turned off now whenever I plug it in it turns itself on and keeps looping.

That's all I can think of ... maybe @nkk71 or @alray or @Danny201281 have other ideas

Well if Hard resetting doesn't help and you can't issue fastboot commands I don't see what can be done.
I think it's probably hardware related though. A similar case recently where the phone would only charge briefly while turned off, fortunately the device was still functional, after flashing everything possible, finally ended up making it s-off and returning it to stock to send for warranty.
Maybe your fastboot problem is driver related but considering your bootloader is freezing I'd say it's a problem with the phone rather than drivers

If you found my posts helpful, Please click thanks :good:
probably hardware defect. You can have a brand new M7 from ebay for about 350$ so I don't think it worth the 350$ to get it repaired, just buy another one and keep that one for parts.

I know this has been posted a hundred times but I have read through the forums and tried every fix. Nothing works.

yeah, i tend to agree it's a hardware problem; if you've already tried the other fixes (including cleaning the phone's usb port, and trying a different charger & cable), then either your usb port is borked, possibly the battery, even maybe the internal connections.
sorry mate
Thanks I'm probably just going to buy another phone it's just a kick in the butt. You guys are really great for taking the time to try and help. One question should I get a nexus5 or another m7 I have T-Mobile but buy phones from craigslist or eBay I don't like getting the newest phone they loose value way too fast.
