AT&T GT: How to turn off 3G? - Galaxy Tab Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Trying to turn off 3G data so I can just get EDGE on my AT&T tab. Can't find any setting for it...
(the scenerio is that with Tmo DayPass, after 30MB they throttle down to 70kbps, but apparently if you turn off 3G, then you get EDGE instead (200kbps)).
I'm guess the option has been removed from the AT&T tab... as apparently its in other GSM ROMs...

Settings, wireless settings, mobile networks, network mode, gsm only.
But if you are using a T-Mobile day pass and t-mobile sim card, with an at&t tab, the best speed you can get is EDGE anyway.
This doesn't make sense -

1) my AT&T tab doesn't have the settings that you cite, which others have also said is the way to turn off 3G. Specifically, Settings>WirelessAndNetwork>MobileNetworks does NOT have NetworkMode, only UsePacketData, DataRoaming, AccessPointNames and NetworkOperators. Hence my speculation that maybe AT&T took away this option to shut off 3G... is there another way to do it?
2) Tmo DayPass, after 30MB, I get throttled down to GPRS, not EDGE, and get about 30-70kbps. I would *like* to get at least EDGE, which would be about 200kbps.

I put my t-mobile sim in an at&t tab, and I have the network mode, so I don't know why your network menu is missing the mode.
Crazy suggestion - buy an at&t data plan. It's cheaper than the t-mobile day pass. $25 for 2gb. It's what I use. The sim came with the tab.
Honestly, I don't see what turning off 3g can do to improve speed.

People report that when you turn off 3G, devices revert to EDGE. The idea is that when you exceed the Tmo softcap, Tmo throttles the 3G speed down to about 70kbps, BUT its still running 3G even though its speeds is that of GPRS. By disabling 3G, you go back to EDGE, which is 3X the GPRS speeds in throttle mode.
The AT&T plan is cheaper IFF you need data for most of a month. But at least for now, I only am playing a day at a time. Mostly I'm on WiFi, which is most every where I need it to be.
That's interesting that you see Network mode on your AT&T tab and I don't...hmmm... are we running different ROMs? My About says:
SGH-I987
Firmware 2.2
Baseband I987UCJK1
Kernel 2.6.32.9
Build FROYO.UCJK1

Yes, I am gingerbread. But I had the same menu with froyo.
I like the JK3 modem in my at&t tab, and in my experiment with the t-mobile sim, I got pretty good speed, for EDGE, anyways. At the top of the development section there is a modem stickie, for the JK3 modem. Use odin3.
You are smart to get the at&t version of the tab. You will love it with the voice and 3g/h, if you get the at&t sim. They sell one small data plan for $15 for a gig.

Can’t change network and roam with Att tilt

Hi,
I have an Att tilt (stock) and at work I loose phone signal.
I had a similar issue with my sprint phone and phone service. When the setting for “roaming or sprint network” was set to “automatic” I would loose signal all the time. Instead for the phone locking into the roaming stronger signal (Alltel) would try to lock into the sprint weak signal all day (going in and out resulting in lost calls). When I had that setting to “roaming only” it would lock into alltell (the stronger signal) with 5 bars.
On the tilt when I go to phone/settings/network the only option is “find network” and that option looks for att and not anything else. Is there a way to force my att tilt to roam only and therefore lock to the alltel network (very strong signal)? Or expose all the available networks and choose which one I want to lock in?
Thanks for all the help, this is a great forum
cannot locate different networks
im having the same problem. phone has bad at&t signal. I cannot locate a diferent network.
Forcing roaming with tilt
I guess the question is…Is there a way to force roaming only in a stock att tilt?
Thanks,
Bump
Anyone?
Thanks for the help
Bump again....I want to know the same thing. I have free roaming, but I can't get it to roam.
PRL file
Bump
Does the phrase “PRL file” provide any help?
Is this an editable file that can solve the issue?
Thanks

I'd like manual n etwork selection as well, but you may be roaming and not know it. AT&T sets up all their phones so it looks like you are on your native network, even when you're not. I had bypassed this and enabled manual network search on all my Motorola phones, I'd like to do the same here with my Tilt.

i suggest setting the band in settings/phone to wcdma. Try it.

I don't have that setting. AT&T removed it. In 3G mode the field test doesn't do much. In GSM mode it seems to work well.

The stock HTC ROM allows this, but it didn't seem to do anything. I know because the ATT HSDPA network is available at my house (barely), and when I lose it it switches to a full signal Edge.
But! If I switch to GSM it seems to lock to the much better Edge signal at my house instead of the HSDPA. That works for me, but will it limit my signal elsewhere?
I had the same problem....the network found was AT&T all the time and no signal, so I place the Sim in a friends Nokia with manual network selection and choose T-MOBILE, place it back in my tilt...problem solved !!
Note: I'm an international user, only use roaming when in USA. But this may help you guys !

[Q] T-mobile GT + ATT data SIM = 3G

I've read through the threads I could find, but haven't been able to figure out if I could get 3G speeds using an ATT data sim in a T-Mobile galaxy tab. Does anyone know? And if it's possible, how?
I don't think you can. T-Mobile and AT&T use different radios for 3G.
Never gonna happen, different radios. Edge speeds will work but 3G won't.

[Q] Inconsistent AT&T Network Speed with Galaxy Note

Hi All,
I hope all is well and you are enjoying the holiday break.
I have a concern regarding the inconsistent Network Speed with Galaxy Note on AT&T network.
I just got the Note from Amazon few days ago and once I inserted the SIM card from my previous phone (AT&T version of SSII) and manually set the mobile network by entering the APN, I was able to get the AT&T data service onto my new SGN but I noticed that the network icon (EDGE/3G/HSPA+) keep changing between 3G and HSPA+... I also noticed that it switched to HSPA+ when it "actually" try to download network packages (email/internet/yourtub...etc) and it has connectivity problem when 3G icon is displayed. This behavior of constantly switching network antenna results in poor battery drain and degrade the user experience.
Please let me know if anyone else are also experiencing the similar challenges with the international SGN on AT&T network. Thank you very much for your time.
If you had the AT&T Galaxy SII and used that SIM, you should be using the "Phone" APN, and not wap.cingular. Do you have the APN configured correctly?

For the love of pete, can someone post the absolute best APN settings for this phone? I do not have an LTE plan but grandfathered unlimited and it works good, but could faster.
There are so many APN settings floating around, I'm not sure what the best one is....

I was also wondering the same, I'm getting mine in a few days and looked through numerous different threads about APN settings. I was just going to use the settings I have on my Infuse 4G but if anyone has any other suggestions I'd be eternally grateful

There appears to be a lot of confusion over this and it's not clear why. It's pretty simple:
(1) If you have the grandfathered unlimited smartphone plan and used that SIM in your Note, then use wap.cingular APN.
(2) If you had a "4G" AT&T phone (SGSII, Infuse 4G, Iphone 4, Atrix 2, etc) and used that SIM in your Note, then use Phone APN.
(3) If you had a "4G/LTE" AT&T phone (SGSII Skyrocket, HTC Vivid, LG Nitro HD), and used that SIM in your Note, then use PTA APN.
If you want to get switched to a "4G" capable data plan, you will need the IMEI of an AT&T branded "4G" phone to give to customer service in order to get your account provisioned for HSPA+ speeds. A 4G/LTE data plan with the PTA APN would also work if you have the IMEI of an AT&T branded LTE-capable phone. You may need a new SIM.
If you have an upgrade available, you could buy a 4G or LTE capable phone, activate the new SIM that will come with it, and then just sell the new phone.

You should be fine using the APN settings from the Infuse 4G. Your account is already provisioned for HSPA+ speeds.
Thanks for the clarification! <3
Little more context here...
I have the grandfathered unlimited smartphone plan from AT&T and I am using the SIM card from my previous SGSII (provisioned for AT&T 4G HSPA+ speed). I tried APN settings of both "wap.cingular" and "phone" and both are working fine for me. Speed is about equal and I do not really see which configuration is clear winner over the other. (Download speed is 3~8 and Upload is 0.8~2.1)
*My concern is why the network icon on my SGN is constantly switching between 3G and HSPA+ and why there is no data service when the network icon is displaying the 3G.
Thank you very much for your time.
I have an AT&T Infuse and if I use the "phone" APN, the MMS does not work. We still need to use the wap.congular APN for MMS.

You NEED to disable Fast Dormancy on AT&T. You can do this by entering *#*#9900#*#* in your dialer and disabling it from the menu that comes up. Basically, fast dormancy is a feature that some networks use in order to more quickly transition from an idle UMTS state all the way up to HSPA+ and back to idle again (when the connection isn't being used for a period of time). The idea behind this feature is to a) conserve battery life on your device and b) more efficiently scale and distribute available bandwidth between you and the cell tower. However, as AT&T does not use this feature on their network, having it enabled on your device can have a negative effect on your battery life in addition to making your data connection more erratic and generally slower (because there's wasted overhead being transmitted). The effect of disabling fast dormancy while on AT&T is that you'll notice the initialization time for your connection from idle to active will be slightly longer, but once active, it will stay at the highest available transmission rate (HSPA+) for longer before going back to idle instead of rapidly going between 3G, H, and H+ all the time.
Just got my note and did all the things recommended and it still frequently cycles through 3g and hspa+. I'm guessing that my coverage area is at fault.
Edit: Nevermind I just needed to restart it and it works fine thanks again!
I get
CONNECTUON PROBLEM OR INVALID MMI CODE
when I did *#*# etc...

Try again.
*#*#9900#*#*
No need to connect a call or anything. As soon as you enter the last *, the menu should show up right away.

[Q] Data on Rogers network

Edit: not sure if this is a switching problem or the way the phone is designed, but sort of figured it out...seems that the Exhibit 4G will auto fallback to UMTS when no HSDPA link is active. Just ran some speed tests and it did in fact hold HSDPA speeds, when done it fell back to UMTS. My GS3 doesn't do this...if I have 4G/ LTE available, it stays with it. Hence the confusion.
I recently purchased a new unlocked Exhibit 4G, have been testing the various roms here...many thanks to the devs...great work! Currently trying AOIP...nice!
My primary usage is on the TMO network, at my RV site on weekends. Unfortunately, 2G is the best I can get in my location, regardless of carrier.
I live in Canada the rest of the time, on Rogers with a GS3.
I was testing out the Exhibit 4G with my Rogers sim, LTE APN's were set up ok, voice & messaging are fine, but data is wonky...I will get the 'H' (aka 4G) icon for a few seconds at a time, but for some reason I keep falling back to 3G speeds. This cycle continues over and over. AFAIK, this phone should support Rogers HPSA+ frequencies (aside from their new 2600), shouldn't it?
So I'm wondering if this is due to an incompatibility with the phone on Rogers, or needing a different baseband, or could the phone's h/w be screwy? This has been happening with all roms I have tried (AOIP, Baked, Slim).
Appreciate any insight.

Problems with using this phone on tmobile

Just switched from verizon to tmobile. Thought I can just pop the sim in, adjust APN and be good to go but it didn't turn out that way. Two major issues: only getting 3g connection and unable to activate hotspot. Phone is not rooted but can root it easily. Are there stable fixes or should I just sale and get a tmobile phone? Thanks

There is a particular G4 model (H811) which has the highest compatibility with T-Mo US. So do you have that one, or something else? (eg the Verizon-specific model: VS986)
The H811 is 100% compatible with Tmo, the Verizon model is probably barely compatible. (Verizon's network was historically based on CDMA, and regular voice/SMS still travels on that network, unless you have VoLTE working on your device)
Also, you do not get hotspot capability on any T-Mobile plan. Currently I have 2 T-mo phones, my daily driver at the moment is still on Verizon. So I have a low-end SIM for T-Mobile (infamous online or Walmart $30/mo plan) which includes 5GB of monthly data but you cannot do tethering/hotspot with it.
