[Q] Can't root Bell i9000M

Hey,
First of all, I tried to find the answer tot he problem in the forums before posting but I was unsuccessful.
I am having some trouble rooting my Bell i9000M. It came with Froyo when I recieved it. I tried androot, z4root, and SuperOneClick but they all failed. In my forum research I came across some comment that said z4root does notwork with the UGJK4 version.
I am restricted to 2 computers, a Mac and a laptop running Ubuntu Linux, so it'd be difficult for me to use Kies for anything.
What is my next step in rooting the phone?
I also tried to flash a kernel, which I read I can do without root access usining heimdall but this error occured: unknown required load command 0x80000022.
My phone is able to do into 3-button recovery and download modes.

have done a lot of reading over the last week trying to work out how to root my SGS i9000M, checking both these forums as well as android & phandroid, as well as googling the issue and trying the Market. I've also checked out many youtube videos on this topic but they seem out of date now. I note the most recent thread on here by liv4air (march 2011) but it doesn't really help with my query.
I am a total noob with regard to this - only heard about rooting a couple of weeks ago but I definitely like the idea. My 1st handset had to be replaced due to a sound issue (it had 2.2 Froyo) - was replaced with a handset sourced for Canadian market (linked to Bell - has lots of stock apps from them that are useless to me). I'd like to get rid of them to start with, but this handset is running Eclair 2.1 - didn't realise this for awhile after it was replaced and didn't actually understand the differences between the builds and firmware.
So now i've got GT-i9000M, Eclair.UGJH2
kernel [email protected] #2, firmware version 2.1-update1 (updated via Kies).
I have tried the one click root download which put the 'update.zip' file on my SD but when I tried to install this in the recovery mode (have discovered that I have the download and recovery mode buttons - also totally new to me!) there was a red error message:
E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip
(status 7)
Installation aborted.
Have seen the Ryan ZA OCLF in Market too, but understand that the 'rooting' ability has been removed from that app.
Have downloaded the Odin3 program to maybe try to root it via this method but am confused about how to get kernels/which ones to get...or even if that's what I have to do! can find various kernels etc at SamFirmware but not really sure how to use them.
Am I even close to working out how to root this phone!?

Flash EZbase : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991792 with odin. All the instructions you need are over there.
It's a complete, stock rom except for a few modifications (such as root and cwm recovery), you can choose to download froyo or gingerbread depending on what you want to flash next, if you do.
(Froyo is the 2.2 android OS that has more stable custom roms/kernels while Gingerbread is the new 2.3.3)
Also since you're on a i9000m, you may want to flash a "i9000m" modem (with the 850mhz band) found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876391 after flashing, but it's not necessary.

Thanks for that link - it looks promising so i'll read through it properly and give it a go soon. I can't query to that forum as it's a development thread but a couple more queries...just want to make sure i don't do anything stupid!
The instructions state: Download all the EZOdin, EZbase CSC, PDA, PHONE and PIT if you do not have Samsung Kies installed, The Samsung USB Drivers will be required to.
Do you know if this means to download ALL those things if I don't have Kies installed, or just PIT if I don't have Kies installed? I do have Kies installed so not sure which of the above I require.
And on the Kies topic, it also states: If Samsung Kies is used please make sure you kill all Samsung Kies related services that are running (kies, tray agent, etc.)
sorry if i'm making you smack your head in disbelief at my ignorance, but does this mean I can use Kies to flash a kernel to my phone (and hence not need the above)...or that when using EZOdin to flash my phone, I need to make sure I have Kies completely shut down during the process?
And I assume by having Kies on my PC, I do not need to download the samsung USB drivers.

What the first sentence means is that you will need the usb drivers if Kies is not installed. There's a period missing I guess.
For the second one, it means you need to close Kies completely before flashing.

Got EZOdin, and the PDA/PHONE/CSC files, but when I click on the EZBase pit file this is all that's written on the page it opens:

Edit: don't know why the rest of my post wouldn't complete above, but no luck in downloading the EZOdin.pit file, either at home (or now here at work).
Any thoughts? Reiterating my noob knowledge (or lack thereof) - I assume the .pit file is crucial to the process? Is there anywhere else I get this file, or another .pit file that will suffice?
Maybe i'll do some reading on PIT....

been a bit of a task over the last fortnight trying to work out the ins & outs of rooting, the ways to go about it and to find a method that worked, which i've finally done.
this is really just a post in case anyone in a similar position and feeling as lost as i was along the road to discovery might benefit from how i managed it.
(and this assumes you've already read the many disclaimers out there about bricking your phone, & making sure you do a lot of reading of the threads on this topic)
i ended up using shortfuse superoneclick. got the program from shortfuse.org - v1.9. i downloaded it and ran it with my anitvirus turned off. It worked fine as per the instructions on the website (shortfuse.org) or in the thread here.

Now rooted and have gone and obtained TiB, Terminal Emulator, Wireless Tether and Root Explorer.
Had the speedmod kernel downloaded and was going to try to flash it to my phone via Odin as per the link you provided but wasn't sure if the kernel itself would root my phone and didn't get replies for my query about that.
So...now that i'm rooted you would still recommend flashing the speedmod kernel? I would assume mainly for the benefits of the kernel itself? Any likelihood of problems arising, having already rooted with SuperOneClick?

yes the speedmod kernel would be an upgrade over the stock one but my signature indicates what I use now: very fast and outstanding, not available on xda
I was never able to get oneclick to work as it was blocked on my pc, so my solution stemmed from having to find an alternate answer to a problem like yours

[Q] How to downgrade I9000 from 2.3.3 to 2.2 stock

Firstly, apologies if this is already posts elsewhere, but I have tried looking for this with no joy (there's aloooot of threads n here lol)
I recently upgraded to the leaked official 2.3.3 using odin (sbl version).
However, I would like to flash with stock software now to get the official upgrade on my Galaxy S via Kies.
Can someone please help or point me to a guide on doing this and where i can download the correct version. I assume its not as straightforward as simply downloading a stock version of Froyo and flashing as I did to upgrade.
My Current phone version is showing as PDA:JVK / PHONE: JVK / CSC:JVK (CPW)
I should point out that this is the first time ive flashed software on my phone, so ideally a step by step guide, if there is one out there

when you have your selected firmware, you need to download a software called 'Odin', this is what we use to flash firmwares to our devices. Look here for a tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596
when you have 'Odin' and your 'Firmware' you may also need a 'PIT' file, this is explained in the above link. This will re-partition the device and restore the 'bad blocks' and remove any lagfix / altered file-systems ect ect.....
Because you are on Gingerbread at the moment, its possible that you have changed your boot loader, in order to restore this back to Froyo bootloader, i think the firmware you will need is JM1 ( you may need to search here / google for the correct answer)
anyway when the whole process is completed, you should be able to connect to KIES and flash the latest release.
Any problems just write back. im sure we can help get you going !!

I think that JM1 is eclair...
froyo works with the gingerbread bootloaders so you should just be able to flash a froyo rom i THINK.

Any froyo ROM is fine as long as it contains the bootloaders as gingerbread ROMs have different ones.
Download your ROM. Check inside the PDA (sometimes code) tar. If you can't see by clicking on it find instructions how to untar it.
There should be a boot.bin and an sbl.bin if there is you're good to go. If not flash another one that has.
You can always reflash with your preferred froyo ROM after the initial flash has downgraded the bootloaders

Ok, I tried flashing using the JPY firmware. The process seemed to go okay.
But only getting the 'S' logo for ages then the phone starts ocaasional quick vibrations and screen eventually goes black.
Have tried rebooting ans reseting.
Please help

First boot after a flash does take a long time and you may get the odd little vibration. The screen may go black for a little while. Be patient. If nothing happens after six or seven minutes pull battery try again. If still no good reflash.
You did check repartition in Odin? And use. 512 pit? You need the pit file for a reflash.
Maybe md5 your firmware to check you didn't get a corrupted download.
If you can still get download mode don't worry you will be able to sort it. Most people on xda brick their phones most weeks!

well i reflashed the 2.3.3 leaked and its working for now, will try again tomorrow, getting a bit late.
Was wondering about whether I should try the JM1 instead of JPY. But, on the Sammyfirmware website they only had XW***JP1 which I understand is not for UK/Europe (mine is XX)?

You can use any firmware - they were released with different codes in different regions but if you use a multi CsC like the one in the jpy ROM it doesn't matter because its the csc file that does the regional settings not the PDA file

Sorry to muscle in on this thread but I'm trying to go back from GB 2.3.3 to Froyo 2.2.1. I've flashed JPY with Odin, used repartition, 512 pit and registry patch 1.82 to XEU, phone works fine. Well, Kies then recognises that there is a new firmware (JPY as it happens) and starts the upgrade process, I then get an error message saying that this version can't be updated
Any ideas??

We now have two threads on the same subject but as this was started first I'll continue with this one.
Thanks for the suggestion, I flashed JPU but unable to connect to Kies so flashed the 1 file JPY but still got the same error message with Kies. Maybe I'll try reinstalling Kies and see what happens.

OK, I've reinstalled Kies, changed the product code in the phone with *#272*IMEI# to XEU and now Kies tells me that I have the latest firmware - great bring on the official version of GB.

Okay, seems that Samsung have finally released Gingerbread.....again. So am gonna make another attempt at downgrading to Froyo so I can get the official Gingerbread update.
However, because of the issues I had with my last attempt, I would like to make sure I am doing it correct.
Current Phone Software
Model: GT-I9000
Firmware Ver: 2.3.3
Baseband Ver: I9000XXJVK
Kernal Ver: 2.3.35.7-I9000XXJVK-CL75655 [email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XXJVK
I believe the version I installed included the bootloader
The phone was purchased in the UK on T-Mobile but supplied through Carphone Warehouse
Steps:
Downloaded: I9000XXJPY (single file) & 512.pit from Samfirmware (does this contain bootloader? If not, will it cause an issue in updating on Kies?)
Remove sim & memory card
Start phone in Download mode
Plug in USB
Open Odin v1.3
Select .tar file as PDA
Select 512.pit file
Re-Partition - Not Ticked
Auto Reboot & F.Reset Time - Ticked
Click Start
Wait for installation to complete and phone to restart
Hopefully i've provided all the info required, but if not, please post or PM me. If anyone could please check my steps above and let me know if i'm doing this correct or not before I go ahead.

but what if i wanna roll back to 2.2.1? do i need to do somthing to re-install a bootloader for 2.2.1?
cuz in most tutor of installing a 2.2.1 rom did mention DO NOT touch the "Phone Bootloader Update" option of odin3

[Q] newbie wants to root SGS I9000 - quick advice!

Please bear over with this newbie question, but now I've spend around 10 hours searching/reading in this forum and on the internet so now I feel I've made a decent effort of trying to find the answer I'm looking for, before asking stupid questions.
I want to root my Samsung Galaxy S I9000 phone, in order to (primary reason) modify the hosts-file and avoid ads! The phone is 1 week old. I'm concerned about guarantee, but people has written that I should not be concerned because I can always revert back. I've used appbrain to export a list of applications and I'll unmount the SD-drive before attempting. I've found out that I'm running (typing *#1234#):
PDA: I9000XXJPY (= "baseband version" under settings)
PHONE: I9000XXJPY
CSC: I9000OXAJPY
Build Info: 2010.12
And from settings I know my:
Firmware version: 2.2.1
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9 (it also says: "[email protected] #1")
Build number: FROYO.XXJPY

I've already looked a bit into some of the links. And as I see it, there are still some questions that remains unanswered, but there are also some very good answers (and thanks for that, i.e. use ODIN for updating the rom).
An example where I'm still confused (hope I've not overseen something):

As for rooting, I have never had a problem with Super One Click...I used it on both my phone and a coworkers.
Just remember if it hangs, change your USB debugging setting (either turn it on or off, depending).

You can't really do a full backup until you root. That first step just has to be a leap of fate. Once you are rooted, use the instructions for hardcore's speedmod kernel to flash a cwm enabled kernel via odin. Then, go into recovery mode and use the clockwork settings to make a nandroid backup.
As for the contradiction, some things will not change when you flash a nandroid backup, such as file system settings and modem. Therefore to return the phone to a warrenty state you need to download the original firmware and flash it via odin. However, for normal use, nandroid backups do just fine.

1) Super One Click didn't hang at all. Installed perfectly without problems (usb enabling was on the whole time). To answer my own question 2: I decided not to try z4root because I read that it is not maintained anymore - just for the record. Maybe some other newbie can use this info.

Firstly gaining root access to access the hosts file is SIMPLE
Superoneclick v1.6.5 roots every sgs I have ever come across (personally I have rooted 4 different ones now) and I have used it to root a xperia x8 as well
I would then recommend downloading the busybox installer from the market and letting that install the latest stable busybox.
then ADFREE also from the market will modify the hosts file and automate the process of keeping that up to date.
on the choice of z4 my only experience was of that not working at all for me so that's all I can add to that.
personally beyond that I use odin to flash the voodoo lagfix and sound mod kernel with CWM and I love that. It's brilliant but I recently did someone elses SGS and it didnt want to play so I used the speedmod kernel with CWM instead. The quadrant scores aren't as high but it seems stable enough and quadrant isnt everything.
CWM will effectively let you back up the whole rom but in order to make effective backup's a simple rooted phone is enough CWM is not a requirement. With something like titanium back up from the market you can make all the back ups you want on a stock phone as long as it is rooted. Personally I do a CWM backup every couple or three weeks, but I do 2 different nightly backups with a weekly full backup scheduled on titanium and I use the titanium media sync to push the backups to my dropbox. This way I always have "belt and braces".
Might seem like overkill but I have around 350-400 apps installed at any given point. 5 lots of push e-mail etc etc etc.

Superoneclick will allow you to remove the the hack and the superuser and busybox programs.
you seem a little confused, there is a difference between hacking the phone for superuser (root) access (which is all you really need and can be done above with one click and no odin etc) and hacking the phone to modify the boot loader which is what clockworkmod is. This changes the recovery area of the phone.
typically when you do this you use odin to flash a new kernel which will include the clockworkrom recovery bootloader.
this is more risky (but still almost always recoverable from in my experience) typically the new kernels include a root solution so flashing a kernel does not require the phone to be rooted already. Usually flashing a new kernel will add extra benefits or features such as the option to change the filesystem that the phone uses to a faster one than the default used by android (this is usually called lagfixing).
technically I would guess that any of these things COULD invalidate warranty but in reality I doubt they would and you should be able to reverse almost any of them prior to returning a device under warranty. personally so far I have screwed up my phone and others a number of times and I haven't once found something that darkyy's ressurection rom hasnt been able to rescue me from. Worst case I flash that then reflash with a stock rom. (I've been able to do this when I have forgotten to unlagfix a phone when I have checked efs or repartition by mistake all sorts, I have had phones in the condition where the wouldnt accept any sim card and darky's has got me out of all these states simply repartition with the resurrection rom and bob's yer uncle)

[Q] Trying to update to Gingerbread through Kies but it just loops?

Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade my firmware through Kies, as I've just connected and it's alerted me that I am now able to upgrade to PDA:JVN / PHONE:JV1 / CSC:JV5(OPS). I am currently on PDA:JP5 / PHONE:JP3 / CSC:JP4(OPS), but when I click on the upgrade, it will pop up with a window that looks like it's downloading the firmware, but they disappears as quickly as it appeared, and my phone then needs to re-connect to kies...
This appears to be an infinite loop, without ever really getting anyway. My phone is rooted if that matters, and I don't think I have any lag fixes applied? I know I have applied lag fixes before, but I think I've since flashed with the stock 2.2 firmware, so there shouldn't be any lag fixes going on... :/..
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong or how I can better debug this problem?

Using Kies, may be
If you have the 3 buttons combo, prefer Odin...

Kies is Satan Tool, its a big cup of ....
if u want do upgrade use just and only ODIN

I would much prefer to use ODIN too, however I don't want to loose my installed apps and how I've got my home screens set up etc, so this is why I was trying to use Kies. I'm not familiar enough with ODIN to know if there is a way I can use it to upgrade without losing installed apps and home screen layouts etc??

Well i think if u backup ur apps then u can save them otherwise i dnt think they remain on ur phone while using the odin is simple.
just go to www.samfirmware.com make an account and chk the firmware sec in toolbox and then select ur model and download the latest formware...JVR is the latest firmware on samfirmware download it and download odin extract that downloaded folder and u have 4 file 1 pit file 2 code 3 csc 4 modem.
Now open odin and put these file respectively ( dnt forget to close kies if u have even from running services on windows) now put ur phone in download mode and connect through odin and tick the repartition on leftside and then start odin...
Of all goes well u r on stock GB
wait phone to phone to boot
now choose any kernel to root ur phone and again turnoff ur phone and get in download mode and choose that kernel in pda option of odin and this time unchk the repartition and start odin
now ur rooted

thanks for the reply Ali Khalid... I'm looking on samfirmware, but I'm not able to find the Gingerbread firmware version for Australia? I downloaded I9000XWJVN ## under the 'America Australia Samsung I9000 Firmwares' heading, but that only had a tar file, with a heap of files I didn't recognize..
Any chance you could give me some more direct help? Like exactly which one I should download for Australia? Looking at the country letter code, which is DT for Aus, they only have firmwares for 2.1 and 2.2...
I'm really lost with this upgrading thing :/..

Is there a specific reason you need Australian version? You can flash any firmware you wish.

There isn't a specific reason... I thought I would have to go with the Australian one to be sure that calls and stuff can connect to my phone through the network correctly? I'm completely lost with all this stuff to be honest...
If I don't have to get a specific Aussie one, which one should I download? As I mentioned earlier, I downloaded one called I9000XWJVN ## but it didn't have the pda files and pit files as expected.. they were all different things :/..

Im running JVS 2.3.5 (with JVR modem) I haven't bothered to flash an Australian/Optus csc but i guess you can if you wish. I did have to add APNs but that is no big deal.
After that you might want to flash a non-stock kernel for root, lagfix etc. I am running semaphore 1.7 and stock+ theming for extended power menu, %battery crt off etc.
Keep in mind if you are going down this route you will be voiding any warranty you have but ask anyone here it is worth it to make the most of your phone.
Do some reading around the forum and ask any questions you need so you know what you are doing.

Sorry I was really confused once too, I will do my best to break it down a little.
You don't need a specific modem for Optus although different modems will give different results depending on your location regarding signal, 3g, gps and battery (due to signal strength) its quick and easy to change modem and this can be done anytime (through CWM recovery) without any data loss.
CSC is a bit different, although you can use a CSC that is different to your location/carrier it basically denotes any specific apps and APNs. CSC can be changed with odin but will factory reset you phone and you will lose data.
-APN details can be found with a quick Google search and can be added no problem through settings>wireless and network>mobile network>access point and as I don't care for carrier specific apps (apart from "my account" but the .apk for that easy to find) I haven't bothered to change it. Others do find it important.
I know the stock 2.3.5 JVS from samfirmware will contain the 3 files (code, modem, csc) and the .pit file for flashing because it is what i flashed.
Or alternitavely there are a few custom roms that can be flashed through odin regardless of what firmware and bootloaders you are currently running.
Some firmwares/ROM only have one file and it can be flashed under PDA. There are guides for flashing on samfirmware(for stock), here and video guides on YouTube. Always stick to the guide.
Decide what direction you want to take (stock with non-stock kernel or custom rom) and read up on some of the topics in the general section about flashing and/or any topics relating to any ROM you want to flash.
Once you know what you want to do with your phone it will mean much less reading for you and others will be able to help you more as you will know what questions to ask.
There is lots of info here, its just a matter of knowing what info you need and how to find it.

If you phone is rooted download titanium backup and backup all apps before flashing, then install it again after flashing and restore only apps.

Wow thankyou so much for that breakdown Mrlwik! That does actually help a little! I'm going to find a stock firmware from samfirmware instead of a custom rom.. But it's great to know that I can swap modems to try and find the one that best suits my needs, as I do have problems with reception in my house, so maybe a new modem could fix that?

Well I finally took the plunge and flashed my phone. I used the JVS firmware, which worked seamlessly. Then I wasn't sure if I were still rooted or not.. so I downloaded Dark Core (or something), and flashed that in PDA using ODIN. Then I was definitely sure I was rooted . Now I've just got to figure out a 'lag fix', my quadrant score at the moment is ~1400, but I reckon I can get much better, so I'll try some overclocking apps from the market I think, see which works best for me.
The most painful thing is restoring all my apps using Titanium Backup.. I have to click install for everyone of them, it doesn't automate it, which is so very annoying, but I'll get there eventually :/... lol

I had a similar problem with KIES in South Africa.
I don't use KIES any longer, it doesn't even have the "connect to internet" option.
Since you've rooted your device, I'm sure you have Clockworkmod flashed...if not, flash that using Odin. After that, you can flash any ROM, custom or stock, using clockworkmod recovery, then you don't require Odin again...just copy the ROM or apps you want to flash to your phone, boot into recovery, flash, and restart. Can't be easier than that.

Hi all. I rooted my 2.3.5 note and all was fine until I updated to 2.3.6 via kies. In "about phone" in settings it still mentions root however Superuser doesn't work, nor will Titanium Backup. I used Dr Ketan's guide to root ( thanks Dr ) have tried to unroot and reroot but nothing appears to work. Otherwise phone is functioning fine. Can some kind soul help me sort my issue out please?

2.3.5 and 2.3.6 is not sufficient to describe ROM
what rom you were using first which was rooted, N wat ROM you have got updated
Describe Baseband version
Kernel version
from setting - about phone
And it is naturally when you update via kies, you will lose Root
You have to ReRoot, n that depends on which ROM you are having Now

It seems that SU binary files have gone missing! Reinstalling Superuser has had no effect - Doh. Still need help!

Ya many time i have seen this strange things happens in KL3, it reacts just like KL7/8/LA1, which are non rootable.
Once hard reset device and try to Root, if not success then Reflash to Old ROM
You will get Root easily on that.
Get Mobile Odin Pro from market, then Flash KL3 with Mobile Odin, n keep option 'Ever Root'Enabled.

I only wanted root to enable me to use Titanium Backup so I could freeze all the bloatware etc. I didn't want to use mobile Odin so if I had to send back my phone I could unroot it without affecting the flash counter or whatever it is, and have no probs with samsung service. As it stands phone works ok and bloatware still frozen but unable to unroot if I do have to return it. Also if I hard reset do I lose all my data? I was using Titanium to backup but that is obviously no longer working. Is there any way to restore SU binary files?

if not mistaken, u can use USB Jig to reset that flash counter.

How can I reflash old rom when i cant use a root app and kies doesn't have an option to revert to old rom?

Read second link of my signature, Stock ROM for N7000
You just get old ROM from there and flash it with PC Odin.
These are Stock ROM, it wont give you yellow triangle or raised counter

Yes hard reset will erase all data
No other way without Root
Mobile Odin wont raise binnary counter
Any time you can back to stock(for warranty purpose) by flashing stock ROM with PC odin

As it is often mentioned that the KL7 is not directly rootable, I was wondering if in the near future it will be? I'd hate to flash my Note as I've already set up things the way I like (for now!). Just want to add some stuff, like titanium and ubuntu, that needs root.

You can download any older rom. Go to link n7000 stock rom... From my signature n donload, there is installation guide available in post #2 n 3 of same thread
