Random shutdowns - Nook Color General

Hey folks,
I've been running Nightly 102 for a few weeks now. I've noticed that about once or twice a week I'll get a random shutdown. No biggie, I just hold the power button for about 10 seconds and it turns back on. I don't remember this happening with 7.0.3 that I was running previous to 102.
Anybody know what might be causing this?

That sounds like SOD (sleep of death).
Basically, won't power on when should be in sleep.
Requires a hard restart (holding power down until it "turns off"), even though you don't see it "turn off." Then holding power again to turn it on.
Known issue, unknown cause? Active wifi has been thought to be a cause, but I've had it happen with wifi turned off. So no idea.

That sounds exactly like what I've been experiencing. Oh well. It doesn't seem to be hurting anything.

Well I get it at least once a day.
Sometimes, I notice it after charging my nook, it won't turn on even though I put it into sleep.

I've found that if I set "wifi sleep policy" to "Never", I get SOD. If I put it back to "When screen turns off", I have no issues - the SOD issue goes away.
This SOD issue only started (for me at least) when going from 7.0.3 stable to nightly 96 (or something like that-the nightly with the new kernel version). On 7.0.3 stable, i leave wifi sleep policy set to "Never" and I don't have any issues at all...
I would love to leave it set to "Never" so that it notifies me of incoming mail immediately....
thanks...

Even with my wifi set to turn off with screen turns off, I still get the SOD daily.
Now, I am on MIUI's Rom and have yet to have an SOD or freeze. So it's making me think it's a UI issue. Since MIUI is a skin over CM7.

I also have the same symptoms and it's probably SOD.

Nexus wifi won't sleep

ok so here goes. i've searched the topics and everyone seems to be having the opposite problem as me. their wifi won't wake from sleep while mine won't sleep when the screen is locked.
i changed the wifi sleep policy to "when screen turns off" but my battery data shows that wifi is awake 99.99% off the time, while most of that time the screen is off. i am seeing significant battery drain as well.
I am running CM 5.0.6 and pershoots Kernel 2.6.33.3 (with updated wifi .ko file, and setcpu is overclocking until <50% where it underclocks.
is anyone else seeing similar problems? or anyone know of any answers?
thanks!

[Q] CyanogenMod Wi-Fi Problem

Hi,
I have flashed my N1 with CM6.1.1 around 2 weeks ago. I'm really satisfied with this ROM.
However, I have noticed my Wi-Fi has gone a little bit weird after flashing CM. Regardless of the Wi-Fi sleep policy setting, my N1 won't turn off the Wi-Fi after it's locked. When I unlock my N1, I can watch the wi-fi icon disappear and then re-appear after a few seconds.
Now I have to manually turn off the Wi-Fi before locking my N1 to conserve the battery. Does anyone know how to get rid of this bug?
Thanks.
i will give you one tip which is its better to leave wifi ON when your phone goes to sleep because it's much better for battery life. if you let wifi turn off during sleep, the phone switches to 3g data which drains far more battery than leaving it on wifi.
now about the disconnect issue, i'm not quite sure what you're seeing. i have a problem with cyanogen 6 where my wifi disconnects for about 3 seconds, and this happens about every 10 minutes or so. its very annoying. but when my phone goes to sleep, i wake it up and still see wifi connected. so no issues there for me.
Wildmonk has some kernel just to address the WiFi issues.
I suggest WM kernel with CM ROM anyway
The problem occurs randomly. Sometimes my phone "knows" it should turn the wi-fi off when it's locked. But most of the time it doesn't...
I think I will live with it.
Anyway. Thanks for the reply.
My WiFi still disconnects every few minutes, then re connects again. It drives me nuts. Cyanogen 6.0
to momomok,
I think you have misunderstood the word "sleep" for Wifi, here sleep means when you are not using your phone the Wifi will turn off temporarily instead of infinitely. It's more like a nap. As you unlock the phone, Wifi will get awake. That's why you will see it re-appear after a few seconds.

[Q] what causes the constant wake status of my phone?

my phone is almost constatly awake (as shown in the battery use graph of 2.3.3).
is there any way to see what causes that? aside from spare parts battery history which says its android system.
any tips?
another poster had this issue and it looked like his phone would lose a signal/service, then re-acquire it, and from that point forward the phone stayed awake and did not go back to sleep. check to see if you have red signal area showing lost connection, and if that correlates to when your phone started staying awake the whole time...
also, check your wifi sleep policy. Settings->Wireless&Networks->Wifi settings->[press menu]->Advanced->wifi sleep policy. should be set to "never" anything else would drain my battery faster. there is some bug in gingerbread. i tried this and it helped me. see if it works for you.
oh yeah forgot to say remember to turn off your wifi when not in use
checked for signal loss ... nothing there
also wifi was never on so the policy can't be the culprit ...

That would be me The signal loss was deliberate though, I forced 2G only at that point, but yeah it stayed awake afterwards.
I've also had random extended awake periods in the night that weren't related to any signal loss, I'll have to remember to get a screen shot next time it happens.

I have the exact same issue. Help?? My phone is always in the 'awake' state regardless of what I do.
i'm using CM7 and one possible source of the problem is the trackball notifications. as long as the light is blinking the phone is in a wake state.
there must be other issues tho, as my phone keeps awake sometimes without any notification blinking.
Notifications keep phone awake.
I'm having the same trouble with my Nexus One on CM7. Any time I receive a notification, the trackball starts blinking and my phone stays awake until they are manually dealt with. I like the blinking light, but it would be better if it only went for a couple minutes or so and let my phone go back to bed...
Does anyone have any advice for this? I've tried CM7 stable and now the current nightlies, and it's all been the same.
Thanks!

SOD due to WiFi sleep policy?

cm7 wifi sleep policy (when to switch from wifi to mobile networks) is set to "When screen turns off" by default. This setting is found in Settings | Wireless and networks, hit the menu bar, Advanced.
options are: when screen turns off, never when plugged in and never.
I'm running n166 and have always turned off wifi before sleeping my NC to avoid sod, but for sake of experimentation. I will set my wifi sleep policy to never, and leave wifi on at all times to see how sod responds.

It's not "due to the wifi policy". Wifi being left on in general can cause it, and the sleep policy does not turn off wifi very fast, sometimes at all.
My daughter in law has a NC that I rooted when it was on 1.0.0 and updated it to 1.0.1. She then wanted it back to stock because of the Read to Me function, and I took it back to 1.0.1 stock, and updated it to 1.2. She has SOD on it 2 or 3 times per month, so makes me wonder it it's something that affects all NC's.
I'm running nightly's on mine and have been since mid April and I also get 2 or 3 SOD's per month, however, they do seem less now. (I'm on 157 oc to 1.2).
...and Thanks to all the Dev's for such a great product.....

Sample size of one, but I had WiFi always on for two weeks and had about 8 SODs. Changed to WiFi off when screen off 5 days ago, and no SODs since.

Nah, quite a few other people report the same. I use Tasker to turn Wifi off after 5s, some other folks use Setting Profile Lite or other programs to do the same. All have had their SOD's stop.
So while we have a workaround, unfortunately the root cause is still unknown.
I had the same SOD problem. I held the power button for like 25 seconds and that brought the NC back to life but with no wifi access or control. I flashed to an older version and now have wifi again.
Don't know if SOD causes others to lose wifi completely upon restart.

[Q] Wifi keeps turning back on

Im not sure if this is a problem with the rom (Viper 1.11), or the phone itself but it seems that wifi keeps turning back on when I turn it off. Usually takes roughly a half hour to turn back on from the time i turn it off, but it continuously does this.
Anyone else have this problem? I dont think I've seen it mentioned before.
EDIT - Never mind it was Battery Guru, apparently it turns wifi on every once in a while to search for a network.
