Well.... seeing as this is the Captivate forum, you might get some biased responses.
I guess I'll take a crack at it. Remember that this is based on my point of view.
First off, the Captivate runs Android, and has a large dev community. I personally think that's the biggest plus after owning it for a year. Call quality is pretty great IMO. Hardware is a pretty big plus, too. This phone, after rooting and ROMing and all, can compete with most new phones. Not necessarily in benchmarks, but day-to-day use. I couldn't really go to another phone if it didn't have SAMOLED, either. I mean the displays that these phones are equipped with are magnificent. Phone doesn't feel like a pile of plastic in hand. Won't say it's the sturdiest ever, but it's got decent build quality. Samsung is pretty good at warrantying stuff as well, at least as far as I've warrantied phones. 16gb internal + 32gig sd is a godsend.
Now a few cons. Camera isn't the greatest, no front-facing camera, stock rom (haven't been passed 2.1, so I can't comment for other stock roms) is absolutely horrendous. No camera flash, not the greatest batt life ever (nowhere near as bad as the inspire lol), no HSPA+ (I still get around 4 down 1 up). Never truly had any bad GPS issues, as most others have had.
I can't say I've posted everything, but that's just stuff off the top of my head. oh and..... afaik the rogers and att captivates are the same, just different branding.

You might wanna go for a infuse instead, most of your cons have been addressed on it. Not as many roms though. Or just wait and get a SGS II pretty much superior, except its sound. Just my 2 cents

What are your thoughts on Samsung Galaxy S or the Vibrant as it is called any body going to jump from the N1 to the Galaxy S?
I have seen some of the specs although quite impressive I still have a hard time a camera with no flash and Samsungs lack of care for their customers!
What are your thoughts??
Nah, I'm still very happy with my N1, I do have another line which has made me consider getting it for that...but I think my next android phone will have a physical keyboard, front facing camera and dual processor, plus I'm a hardcore HTC fan haha.
I am with TMobile, and I've been Rockin the G1 since it was 1st availible in 08...
I am SUPER excited about purchasing the vibrant the second its availible. (July 21)
I don't mind not having a flash bc I don't have one now. I am however excited to have a zoom on the camera.
If I'm not mistaken, sprints version will have a front facing camera, as well as a sliding keyboard. Now that's Cool. But not having those won't deter me from getting it. This whole time I was waiting till sept so I can get a full discount on the nexus, but F it...I'm glad to Jump on this Vibrant!
But I wonder... I've become so used to flashing ROMs and customizing my rooted G1, are all androids Rootable? Like, eventually will I be flashing ROMS on the vibrant?

i am loving my N1 and I have to say that this is the BEST android phone that I have dealt with! I have an upgrade available as well and I am thinking of getting it but I know that my N1 will be my "daily".
What makes me angry with Tmo is that they always seem to be the last to jump on the BEST phones available as if Tmo is not campaigning for the cool phones like the EVO, or the Droid X. It is alomost like an after thought that we get the "hand-me-downs".
That is why I think the N1 is for now the best android device available for T-mo.
I agree 100% with you. I wish Tmo was wayyy more aggressive in their pursuit of phones. However they did have the 1st android phone. But still...TMo has always been good to me and their customer srervice is outstanding...but Jeeeezus MAAN! Let's get a decent line up of phones!.
After posting my 1st comment about the vibrant, I started looking around...seems like ppl are having uisssues with gps and lag? Great! .... for real?

Having seen what happened with the Samsung Galaxy and Behold 2, i wouldnt ever touch a samsung android phone again!
I know alot of android phones get deserted by the manufacturer and there's tons of complaints about people stuck on 1.5 or 1.6, but what samsung did with those two phones is horrible.
For the behold 2 they didnt publish complete source code, and abandoned major updates very quickly. They said the behold 2 cant handle 2.1, when the Hero - the same hardware (MSM720x) and with less ram has just had a 2.1 update.
The Galaxy was advertised with many features it never actually had (android/software based), and it got so bad that O2 germany allowed anyone who purchased a galaxy on contract to send it back for a full refund, and this was 6 to 9 months after it was released on their network lol.
This isnt the usual 'why didnt HTC update my G1 to froyo' type of rant. Samsung abandoned these two phones within about 6 months of launch and purposly released just enough source code to cover their asses. Not impressed at all
Galaxy s is good. But I'm waiting for something that will leap frog it.
In particular, I want a screen with higher resolution. I'm not used to apple having something better than me =)

The new screen on the Galaxy S is actually the same resolution as the new iPhone...
The only reason I have considered getting the vibrant is that I am hoping it will get rid of my edge/3g issues. Sometimes I get so pissed at my nexus, it randomly switches to edge, then pandora stops, then I have to lock it on WCDMA only, but sometimes that doesnt work lol.
I'll be getting one for the Wife who is using a MT3G
Me I'm happy with my N1, but will play around with it once she gets it

^ excellent real world experience there...
i won't buy another n1 because of the antennae issues, same with the iphone 4. it's a stupid, stupid design problem, just like the n1 has a really stupid problem with connectivity.
OFF CONTRACT- get whatever you want. i really don't understand people waiting for an 'upgrade' on contract, you can vote with your money or just play along with the rest of the sheeple.
the next android device i'll buy will be:
1 another g1, it's hard to beat for the craigslist prices now
2 whatever full querty, physical keyboard, dual processor, 1gb of ram, dual flash, OFF CONTRACT GSM phone comes out from htc.
i'll lean towards #1 since #2 might take another year or so.

I don't know enough about developing roms to know for certain, but if this thing gets released on all the major carriers in the US....couldn't we just flash roms onto any of the devices and flash our service providers radios? If thats the case (which it may or may not be, not sure how the Sprint version may differ because of the hardware keyboard and I think Verizon's version may have an LED flash) then I am going to buy one for sure. There may be a lot of support for these if they really take off and sell well. Either way I am upset with my N1's touchscreen issues and 3G issues as well, and will be replacing it as soon as a supported worthy device comes along. Its a shame too cus I love my N1 and what it stands for, its gonna suck to go back to an old school carrier locked down device.

CDMA and GSM are different technologies, and all carriers use different bands. Short answer is no.
He is saying take the ATT galaxy and flash that radio to the ATT nexus.
Still the answer is no cause a radio has to be made specifically for the nexus to work.
No what I actually meant was if it was possible to just make a sort of generic rom that could be flashed to any of the 3 similar devices...Captivate, Fascinate, and Vibrant...and then flash a specific radio image for your own carrier. Like if I flashed the rom then flashed an AT&T radio to go with it. But after having my Captivate and reading about other users flashing Vibrant roms.....my idea is a bust, there are too many physical and software differences between devices. But we have a ClockworkMod recovery now and the Cyanogen team has a Captivate and they have started work already so its looking like we'll have some new eye candy and functionality soon.
Im selling my GSM Nexus one and would like to try a different phone but I love the Nexus One.
Should I get the AT&T Nexus one or Samsung Captivate? I want either one for the WCDMA Network.
Well, at this point, you have decide for yourself. Neither phone is a push over and both are worth their weight. I comes down to your personal preference. You love the Nexus One, but you want to try a different phone. Is it worth it to buy a new phone just 7 months after the Nexus was released? Thats up to you. Would you prefer going Captivate vs losing Froyo? Does the Captivate peek your interest more then the Nexus? Its all up to you at this point.
Technical correction: there is no GSM or non-GSM Nexus One, and there is no WCDMA or non-WCDMA (which is UMTS) Nexus One. The difference between the networks is in the transmission frequency, not in the system.
What to buy? Depends on what you do more. GS would be better for games, Nexus - for modding and using in the future (Froyo, Gingerbread, etc).
nexus one user here and loving it... i would personally get the captivate if it gets rooted (unless it already has been)
The Nexus will be around for a while, while the captivate is just another Android phone with the dreaded Samsung support. Honestly it looks very cheap to me. I also had the decision to go with a Captivate but went with the Nexus One and can't regret my decision. It's just an overall amazing phone.

The captivate is an awesome phone. A friend of mine has it and loves it. I used it briefly and became a little jealous of speed and screen quality. Then I remembered why I love my nexus. Its the developer phone with huge community support, its not locked down by att so there's no att bloatware and you can actually sideload apps instead of only using the market. Plus running stock android allows much better rom options. Not to mention Samsung support is notoriously bad and they tend to never updated their os. So you'll probably get an android 2.2 updated but then the rest will have to be supported by the dev community.
Wrapping up my jabber jaw... Captivate is well worth it if you just want an android phone with power and features. It really isn't if you want to be able to dig around and customize/optimize your phone... plus have updates and a strong developer support. That's what's good about the nexus.
Long story short, I can upgrade my phone every 8-12 months for the subsidized price. I bought my captivate when it came out, and im up for another upgrade if I want.
I've been waiting for the next really good android phone for ATT, and this looks like the one to get.
My only worry is if its not that huge of an upgrade over my captivate, and if I should just wait a few more months (maybe 6)
Also will the Atrix have a following as large as the captivates on XDA.
If it doesn't bother you that it can't upload worth a damn (no hsupa, recently revealed), and if you're itching to buy a phone now even though att could be getting more good ones within an unknown but potentially tolerable amount of time...
whatever you do, contract time is google voice porting time. Don't drop that ball.
Wait to see what developers cook up in the atrix forums.
Holding out for the Nexus S if you're a Google fanatic, could show up soon, made it through the fcc for att recently.
I agree with xdahgary, wait to see what the devs can do with the atrix. the reason i got into android was for the great community but if motorola takes the community out of the equation then it isn't worth it to me.
Yea I'd probably wait to see what the devs can do to the atrix ... I'm debating whether to get the atrix or nexus s.... any idea when the nexus s will be release for att??

If what I'm reading is correct, you're likely to never have custom kernels with the Atrix.
The Captivate would be a pile of **** without custom kernels. Voodoo sound, voodoo lag fix, voodoo color, overclock, undervolt, embedded cwm recovery, etc.
Sent from my Captivate.
+1 on the wait to see what happens with the atrix. motorola builds a decent piece of hardware and with it's shear processing power it cant be slow and the huge battery is either a sign that battery life wont suffer or that running two cores makes it a serious battery sucker.
if you think you can ever be satisfied with a stock phone then sure get the atrix but for many of us the tinkering is an addiction so if that's the case with you i'd wait to see what the developers create for it. samsung makes it too easy to flash. im personally waiting to see the infuse but if it turns out to be single core and has the same graphics chip ill wait till my contract is up to upgrade. if htc could make the desire hd/inspire thinner like a galaxy s i'd get that even though it's not exactly ground breaking at this point in time.

looks like the infuse falls under the galaxy s 2 and is not just a slightly tweaked galaxy s. definately getting it. too many features line up for it not to be a galaxy s 2 even though only the clock speed was anounced i am now nearly certain that the infuse is infact dual core. good stuff

previous post changed, im horrible with time... I agree Motorola has fallen off... and if it werent for them adopting and coddling android they would have fallen off even worse... but the old samsungs were pretty terrible... bad os, hard to unlock, hardware problems... they were too focused on tv's maybe... motorola and nokia used to rule the cell world... now they suck... only htc has been strong enough to develop top handsets their entire existence... and quite hackable... i never thought once id own a samsung, but they have come around... tv's too... can't count out the rest though, once you think someone's down, they get back up...
Honestly Motorolla phones as I've noticed tend to be quite laggy, maybe the Atrix will be the one to break that trend with the dual-core proccessor but then again wouldn't a samsung dual-core be even less laggy? The captivate still has some time before it falls below top-tier (with custom ROMs that is) Stick it out, By the end of the year I've heard rumors of quad-core... here's to hoping

So?
Sent from my Captivate.
Ok.. So I'm looking at getting a Infuse tomorrow... I did something crazy to my daily phone and ended up with a hunk of junk. So I went to Walmart and picked up a new Captivate. I realized later that I could have had a Infuse 4G for the same price.
I realized that the volume+ button does not work on the device... So I have to return it and get another one. I was thinking about getting an Infuse 4G
Pros: Bigger battery, Hummingbird Processor and H+ capabilities.
Indifferents: forward camera.
Cons: It feels cheap. I'd have to buy an otterbox to protect it. The battery cover is made of some really crappy plastic and you practically have to break it to take it off. The entire package is the size of my breast pocket where I store my Captivate with it's otterbox. I would not be able to store it with the otterbox.
Overall: I think I'm going to buy another captivate...
Anyone got a datasheet on the Snapdragon processor though?

My friend has an Infuse and there are very few DEV's making Roms. To be exact only one that I noticed was active and they just ported I9000 GB rom to infuse, but have no custom Kernels that support OC/UV.
Infuse is just the captivate with specs that the captivate should have came with. Only thing I honestly do not like is the tiny dev community otherwise I would say get it over the cappy since they are the same price. If you dont mind one rom on gb and one rom on froyo and can live with that I would get Infuse. If you want a plethora of dev roms and support cappy all the way.

Adam,
I would either get the sgs2 if you are wanting Samsung or the bell sensation if htc is what you prefer.
Can't see spending the cash for a new captivate when they can be found for <$200 in great shape.
If you are just looking for another dev phone, I have one of my old captivates that I have just been using as a music player. Has generic imei from a borked flash way back when, works fine on at&t but they don't recognize it as a smartphone . Screen is fine but body is scuffed up from lying in my console.

Should I upgrade to the captivate? It's between it, the Infuse, Thrill, Pantech Burst, or the Atrix? All these phones seem vastly better in specs but, the captivate has a pretty awesome looking stable ICS port and it's really apealing to me. I just don't know which phone to have for the next 2 years
They are all pretty outdated by now..I would wait if I were you for the sgsIII
I really do want the galaxy s2 but it's out of budget..
Captivate is a really great phone. Infuse is a captivate with a bigger screen and better rear shooter and a front shooter. The dev on it was crap few months back, so you will need to check. Atrix is a dual core, but I've never used it neither the pantec or the thrill.
My opinion (between Captivate and Infuse) If you like the size of the screen and don't mind less choices on ROMs and mods Infuse is nice. I wouldn't trade it for my cappy. Running incredible stable ICS and the Infuse feels huge (big bezel) for me.

Not sure if you're going with ATT or not. But I was browsing their phones online today and they had the Captivate for $.01, or, a refurbed GSII for $10.00. I've noticed that refurb pop up a few times in the past few weeks. I don't know how many they have, but they aren't always available.
If you're patient and going with AT&T, I would just watch their website daily and see what pops up.
No mention of the Inspire? Its not dual core, but its still a good phone. The burst is is basically a mildly updated captivate. What i would say is check Craigslist for used phones. You pay a little more, but your not under contract and you don't obligate yourself for 2 years.
